Summaries under the cut
Tiffany Aching by Terry Pratchett

Forced into Fairyland to seek her kidnapped brother, Tiffany allies herself with the Chalk's local Nac Mac Feegle - aka the Wee Free Men - a clan of sheep-stealing, sword-wielding, six-inch-high blue men who are as fierce as they are funny. Together they battle through an eerie and ever-shifting landscape, fighting brutal flying fairies, dream-spinning dromes, and grimhounds - black dogs with eyes of fire and teeth of razors - before ultimately confronting the Queen of the Elves, absolute ruler of a world in which reality intertwines with nightmare. And in the final showdown, Tiffany must face her cruel power alone...

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
Through six turbulent months of 1934, 17-year-old Cassandra Mortmain keeps a journal, filling three notebooks with sharply funny yet poignant entries about her home, a ruined Suffolk castle, and her eccentric and penniless family. By the time the last diary shuts, there have been great changes in the Mortmain household, not the least of which is that Cassandra is deeply, hopelessly, in love.
The Borrowers by Mary Norton
Beneath the kitchen floor is the world of the Borrowers -- Pod and Homily Clock and their daughter, Arrietty. In their tiny home, matchboxes double as roomy dressers and postage stamps hang on the walls like paintings. Whatever the Clocks need they simply "borrow" from the "human beans" who live above them. It's a comfortable life, but boring if you're a kid. Only Pod is allowed to venture into the house above, because the danger of being seen by a human is too great. Borrowers who are seen by humans are never seen again. Yet Arrietty won't listen. There is a human boy up there, and Arrietty is desperate for a friend.
Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan
Esperanza thought she'd always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico--she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances--Mama's life, and her own, depend on it.
The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
Two orphaned children are on the run, hiding among the crumbling canals and misty alleyways of the city of Venice.
Befriended by a gang of street children and their mysterious leader, the Thief Lord, they shelter in an old, disused cinema. On their trail is a bungling detective, obsessed with disguises and the health of his pet tortoises. But a greater threat to the boys' new-found freedom is something from a forgotten past – a beautiful magical treasure with the power to spin time itself.
Dork Diaries by Renee Russel
Nikki Maxwell is not popular, in fact Nikki Maxwell is the opposite of popular; she's a total dork! But Nikki's hoping that by moving to a new school she might just stand a chance of making some friends and leaving her old lame-ways in the past. But life is never that simple... Follow Nikki's life through sketches, doodles and diary entries as she starts her new school, battles with her mum for an iPhone and meets her arch-nemisis, the school's queen bee, Mackenzie.

Making Great Use of My Morning Off
by creating this quiz!!!
So yeah, I've been spending a lot of time driving for my job lately, which means plenty of time for contemplation, and this quiz is the result haha
Below the cut you'll find the list of books/descriptions that I included as my quiz results, in case you want to know what the other books are, or if you don't feel like answering a few questions, which honestly is fair. It's also my first time making a quiz, so there's a really high chance that I've done a terrible job weighting the answers and everyone will get the same book LOL
Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome
This is a old children's classic that I only read in recent years. I fell in love with the adventures and shenanigans of this sibling group spending their summer sailing around a small lake in England, camping out on an island, and battling against a rival boat. The best part? It's actually the first book in a series, and all 12 of these books are equally delightful.
The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith
If you've only ever seen Disney versions of this story, you are SO missing out! This story is a delight from beginning to end, full of fun and adventure and so many more characters than the movies include. Smith's wry humor really shines. To me, this is a Christmasy book and I read it almost every December. PLEASE NOTE: You MUST find an edition illustrated by Janet and Anne Grahame-Johnstone!!! It is a CRIME for this book to ever be published without them!!!
The Velvet Room by Zilpha Keatley Snyder
This one may be a little hard to get a hold of as it has been out of print for a while. Set during the Depression, Robin's family finds a job at a fruit orchard in California. I first read this when I was around 11, and Robin's desire to have her own secret place where she could just be quiet and by herself really resonated with me. There's a lovely story here of friendship, overcoming prejudices, and what it means to be part of a family. Does everything get tied with a possibly too-neat bow at the end? Yes, but that's yet another reason that I love it.
The Snark-Out Boys and the Avocado of Death by Daniel Pinkwater
This book was hard to link things to, so I'm wondering if anyone will even end up getting this as a result. It's just completely its own thing - definitely the most marmite book on this list. You'll either think this is the most hilarious thing you've ever read, or the stupidest. It's completely bonkers from first page to last. Pinkwater wrote tons and tons of books, but if you enjoy this one, put Borgel on your list as well, as it's my other favorite of his.
The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery
Thankfully, I've been seeing this book get a lot more love in recent years. While I dearly love the Anne books (and almost chose Rilla of Ingleside for this slot, since I think it can be read as a stand-alone), this one is lovely because it's just its own little story. Valancy is one of my favorite book heroines of all time. I will say that this book starts sad as Montgomery shows us how grey and difficult Valancy's life is - but then things turn around and the rest of the book is just so much fun. It's a romance, but it's really more about Valancy embracing life and I love it.
Snow Dog by Jim Kjlegaard
Kjelgaard wrote all kinds of books about outdoor life, hunting, trapping, and dogs. They aren't for everyone, but I absolutely devoured them growing up and still return to several of them for regular rereads. While Snow Dog includes a trapper named Link, the real focus of the story is on the feud between a crafty wolf and a half-wild dog. It gets pretty intense. If you like it, there's a sequel called Wild Trek, another favorite of mine - Link and the dog head even further into the wilderness to try and rescue two men who crashed a small plane. It's SO exciting!!
The Man in the Brown Suit by Agatha Christie
There are a lot of Christie books I could have picked because I love almost all of them, but I went with one that I don't hear people mention as often. It's one of her "spy" novels, which she always writes rather over-the-top and campy, and I think they're fantastic. This book is full of humor, drama, ridiculous characters, unlikely scenarios, and coincidences, and it's just so much fun from start to finish.
Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters
Set in 1880s Egypt, Amelia Peabody inherited some money from her father and has decided to use it for travel, with Egypt as her first stop. It doesn't take long for her to become embroiled in mystery and romance. I'm not sure I would have necessarily thought to put this book on this list except I am currently rereading this entire series (there are 19 books altogether) and enjoying it SO much. Amelia can be a little too pedantic at times, and the series has some lows as well as highs, but on the whole these are just great fun. While the mysteries are a little campy, Peters (who real name was Barbara Mertz) had a PhD in Egyptology, so the background for these stories is impeccable, adding greatly to the entertainment and interest.
Spindle's End by Robin McKinley
If you don't like your fantasy to include long, rambling, parenthetical asides, then give this one a miss. I can't explain why I love this book so much, but I read it almost every year. A sort-of retelling of Sleeping Beauty, it spans years and is a bit chunky, but I love every page.
Joy in the Morning by P.G. Wodehouse
No list of favorite books of mine would be complete without a Wodehouse. There were sooo many I could have chosen because I love them ALL. But this one is absolute classic Bertie and Jeeves fare, so it's a great place to start (although I personally recommend reading all the Jeeves books in published order so you really get the full impact of the various background characters). I literally can't read Wodehouse in public because I snort-laugh at almost every page. Wodehouse is a master of building, building, throughout a chapter - here's a solution - final paragraph of the chapter pulls the rug out from under you and sends you in a completely different direction. He's just plain magic.

I know this might be kinda stupid but. do you have any music recs. specifically of the child abuse variety because I'd be very interested in that.
*sweats* ok so here's the thing- I have a playlist called "Abuse" and its full of music that is either explicitly about abuse, related to abuse thematically, or just has Abuse Vibes to me (some of which is likely inexplicable to other people)
im also kind of self conscious about my taste in music, cause sometimes it's like. i dunno. the steven universe soundtrack or a fnaf song i really like. and thats CRINGE! and really any genre of song can be about Child Abuse so it's like. idk if you'll like any of the things i recommend.
THAT BEING SAID, here's a selection i guess!! because I'm flattered you would even ask haha. a lot of these are pretty well known already tho so idk how helpful this will be. anyway this got hella long so. under the cut!
songs explicitly about or including themes of child abuse/having shit parents/having familial issues:
Guiltless by Dodie
Black by Okkervil River (narrative about a guys girlfriend telling him about her dad sexually abusing her. one of, if not the first, song i ever heard about CSA and it holds a special place in my heart)
The Mute by Radical Face
Ripple Effect by Scott Helman (kinda more about generational trauma & healing if im honest. i dont listen to it as much as the others on this list)
Poplar St by Glass Animals
Daddy Issues by The Neighborhood
Twin Sized Mattress by The Front Bottoms (classic i know)
The Family Jewels by Marina and the diamonds
Family Line by Conan Gray
Christmas Kids by ROAR (ok technically not about the kids but i find the subtext of how the kids are used in this abusive relationship horrific. also, it reminds me of my parents)
Drift Away - Steven Universe (OK I KNOW ITS NOT TECHNICALLY ABOUT THAT BUT TO ME IT'S ABOUT MY MOM. IT TRACKS TOO EXACTLY TO NOT INCLUDE HERE)
Other Abuse songs:
labour by Paris Paloma
This Hurts by Mindless Self Indulgence (my ex wife says i listen to this song to go joker mode and i hate that because i know she means Straight Joker and not Camp Joker but i do really like the song)
I'm your puppet by Gregory And The Hawk
Eric by Mitski (REAL GOOD)
Believe Me by James and the Shame (more about spiritual abuse sort of)
Girl Anachronism by The Dresden Dolls
Thermodynamic Lawyer esq GFD by Will Wood and the Tapeworms
We'll Never Have Sex by Leith Ross (less about abuse and more about, like, a healing relationship. still i think you can easily read into the alluded past abuse or sexual issues going here)
Fuck About It by Waterparks
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths (this is just such an abused person song)
This Hurts by Mindless Self Indulgence (my ex wife says i listen to this song to go joker mode and i hate that because i know she means Straight Joker and not Camp Joker but i do really like the song)
Sex With A Ghost by Teddy Hyde
I Cant Handle Change by ROAR (obviously)
rotting by vivivivivi
rook by sardonica
My favorite "Abuse Vibe" songs (NOTE: some of these songs might be about abuse or toxic relationships but um. im not very smart or good at sorting so. they ended up here):
Take a Slice by Glass Animals (PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS ONE FUCK THE REST OF THIS LIST EXCEPT ANIMALS I LOVE THOSE TWO)
Animals by Stomach Book (SEE ABOVE)
Youth by Daughter
Duck Or Ape by ROAR
Million Dollar Gold Digger (idk what it is about this remix im not even a huge fan of either of the songs its mixing. this is the VIBES part of the rec list i don't have to explain myself)
I'll Be Good by Jaymes Young
Gooey by Glass Animals
Breaking Down by Florence & The Machine
Moby Dick by Jakey
Aurora Borealis by Lemon Demon (hard to justify but this song just brings such vivid "abused kid failing to be normal while hanging out with someone and further isolating themself" vibe. yes im projecting. leave me alone)
The Dismemberment Song by Blue Kid (sometimes you just wanna kill your parents)
I'M GONNA WIN by Rob Cantor (this one just feels like anger and bitterness and being suspicious of anyone who tries to help you. I listen to it when im fucking going through it. its also a bop but you prolly already know that, i think it's pretty popular? idk)
It's Alright by Mother Mother (stereotypical i know)
South Dakota by Jakey (honestly i dunno. i dont even know where south dakota is)
My Blood by Twenty One Pilots (for all you sibling havers out there)
My Play by AJR (my parents arent divorced but man i wish they were. Also, this just brings up very vivid memories for me trying to show my parents things and it is fucking crushing haha)
Best Of You by Foo Fighters (idk just more shit that reminds me of my parents)
The Woods by San Fermin (this one is just very "I should have died as a child"-core to me)
JUVY ft. Julia Bard by Nnamdi Ogbonnaya (this guy is weird and i didnt like his stuff at first but then... i came back... and now he holds a place in my heart)
Grape Gil by Nnamdi Ogbonaya (i think this is my favorite song of his. I nearly made an owl house animatic to it)
Obsession by OK GO
Better Than Me by The Brobecks
ARE WE STILL FRIENDS by Tyler The Creator
Dumb Dumb by Mazie (honestly this one just reminds me of thinking "i hate it here everyone is so dumb" and then maladaptive daydreaming for hours to escape the situation hah)
Stone Wall, Stone Fence by Gregory And The Hawk
Never Wanna Fall in Love With U by Nelward
Another New World by Punch Brothers (this one is such an explicit and straightforward narrative i really can't explain it other than like. the emotions.)
Julep by Punch Brothers (once again, the emotions)
Always Sayin' by The Littles Man Band
A NIGHT OUT ON EARTH by Waterparks
Consequences by Lovejoy
Scum by Lovejoy
SMELLS LIKE TEEN SECRETS by lil boodang (another hard to justify one. idk. it just feels like it ok. sue me)
anyway i'm sure there's more but thats just a quick selection from my Abuse playlist. and by quick i mean you better appreciate this cuz i put way more effort into this than i needed to.

i really wonder whats your top 5 in movies, series, singers, books
it may seem weird but please
This is hard because I always struggle to rank things I like. It's usually more of a "hey, I like all these things, and I prefer some aspects of them than others." So these lists are not in order of preference, and I won't always be doing 5 of each because I feel bad about picking favourites 😂
Movies:
How to Train Your Dragon - excellent cinema, why are they adapting it. please don't ruin it.
Back to the future - c'mon, it's iconic
Tangled - The disney movie I return to the most
Spiderman far from home - MJ and Peter are just the sweetest in this one
The Princess Diaries - both movies are amazing, but I do prefer the second. I feel like Julie Andrews is my third grandmother because of these movies.
Series (movies? books? shows? I'm not sure so I'll just go with shows.):
Phineas and Ferb is always a fun time.
Miraculous Ladybug is sick and pathetic and terrible but I still thoroughly enjoy it.
H2o: Just add water, baby.
And yes, I do enjoy shows besides kids shows, these are just more fun to talk about 😄
I like K-dramas, some of my favourites are W: two worlds, Exxtraordinary You, Legend of the Blue Sea and Crash Landing on You.
Singers (I'm not sure if you mean singers as in my favourite muscial artists, or who I actually think are the best singers. I will do both.)
I love Dodie Clark's music and songwriting, although she isn't the strongest singer.
Laufey, Marina, Mitski, Taylor, Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood can be super fun.
Julie Andrews was such a gorgeous soprano, as was Marni Nixon and the other contemporaries of that time.
And speaking of musical theatre, Ramin Karimloo, Philippa Soo and Lea Salonga are brilliant.
For male singers, those Korean boys have some great vocals.
Books:
The Anne of Green Gables series. Often when I mention this series people say "oh yeah, I read the whole series! The four books are so cute." The full series is actually 11 books and I only know of a few people that dedicated themself to reading all of them because I'm telling you--some parts draaaggg. But I still really love this series and I always get sad when I see the references L.M Montgomery put in reflecting her own life which was much sadder than Anne's. Anne and Gilbert will always be my favourite enemies to lovers ship and when she rejects him and only realises she loves him when he's dying? Impeccable. Plus the eternal classic, "I don't want sunbursts or marble halls. I just want you." 😭 Gorgeous. The last few chapters of Anne of Ingleside are so good, the reminder that even after decades Gilbert still loves her is so sweet.
The Hunger Games is by far the best piece of dystopian YA literature. Suzanne explores themes in way that informs the way we now consume media. Every time I see a media circus against the backdrop of war and brutality I am reminded of Katniss. The series does loose points for me in that I find the love triangle boring, but I can see why it was included.
I recently reread the Percy Jackson series and while some parts are a bit too kiddy for me, I still love Rick's character depictions. Percy is such an interesting, layered character, and when people say it's impossible for men to write an authentic female character, I point to Annabeth Chase. Rick wrote her as a person, not just the female love interest.
Another book series I like, I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, is The Lunar Chronicles🙂

Also, same. Since I saw Vienna was my favourite song to play on guitar. The pattern is so soothing and I always played it if a just wanted my hands busy. And now I shall never play it again. Same with La Jolla. I worked so hard to be able to do all the hammer-ons in tempo and now I shall never play it anymore.
Now my favourite song is Sick of Loosing Soulmates by Dodie again. I got one of my friends to listen to her songs and she said that one was her favourite and then I realised it is literally all guitar and so easy to play (it’s just slinging around on the E string while playing a lose D string in between) so I learned it for her and made my own version by accident.
I prefer tabs, mainly because I struggle with chords so bad. I can’t focus on a strumming pattern and singing at the same time. Meanwhile I can learn and memorise tabs pretty easily because I’m classically trained, but finding good tabs without having to pay for shit is so hard. Why does everything need to be behind a pay wall, I just want to have fun.
You’re self-taught though! That’s so cool! And you play ukulele!? I have one, but I know like 3 songs lol. I should play it more but I already have too many hobbies and too little time.
-🌲
OOOOOHHHH thats so cool
i love that you made your own version ur so cool spruce
yeah that makes sense!!! my sister prefer tabsss
ooof yeah i can imagine finding good tabs would be hard ooofers
AWW THANK YOU EUEUEUEUE i doooooooo!!! uke is fun <3 such a mood too many hobbies and too little time... story of my life

What is your favorite musician/band?
this is the hardest question. i listen to a lot of solo artists. im going to infodump my current listening habits rn.
car seat headrest is probably my favorite band. god damn it shane madej stop messing with my music taste. i love how hard certain lyrics hit you like bricks, and the way they sing is so ???? entrancing?? relaxing?? idk. its nice to listen to rock, i dont listen to rock very often. also i can tell alot of it was made by a 20 something, its got college kid energy /pos
Limbo is a classic for a lo-fi indie pop vibe. also shes a super cool person and is so nice. cant wait for her new stuff!!
phoebe bridgers, obviously. kyoto and i know the end <3
taylor swift, obviously. i really only listen to fearless tv, speak now, a little of midnights, and our song. listened to her at 8 so its very nostalgic.
chloe moriondo started soft indie, turned closer to alt?? idk LOUD and very for the girlies. she brings a "im going to punch cocky men with my hello kitty boxing gloves" energy to suckerpunch that some people dont seem to like. she slays
PINK PANTHERESS: to hell with it is literally no skip, i have the entire thing memorized. absolute genius.
porter robinson: i fell in love when shelter was posted and now im obsessed with the song musican. anything describing the creative process is always super cool. my current morning alarm song
tv girl: the only other band i listen to. city pop vibes??? indie pop. ive heard that their music is sexist but??? idk???? interpreting lyrics is hard sometimes, i always took it as sarcastic.
others in my rotation: dodie, girl in red, hayley kioko, mxmtoon, beabeadoobee, miracle musical, conan gray, clairo, cavetown, hozier, mitski, penelope scott, wallows.
70ish music recs: billy joel, elo, elton john, dolly, chicago, abba
i also listen to 80s japanese city pop, general lofi music, general trendy songs (like tiktok songs n stuff) and muppet soundtracks. (moving right along is SO GOOD)

Name: Maria Moulin
Nickname: Mary, Marie, Angel, Princess (Janice)
Birthday: March 16th
Age: 19
Appearance: Maria is petite and thin with very pale white skin, pretty doll like facial features with large up turn violet eyes and a beauty mark on the left side under her lips, short very blonde-almost white hair in a bob cut
Clothes: Her wardrobe is mostly very modest and nothing too special, usually very covering of her body such as sweaters, long sleeve button ups, long shirts shortest being just three inches above her knees, high socks, leggings, and barely any form of jewelry besides her studs of her ears and her silver cross around her neck
Personality: Maria's pretty simple and quiet on the outside, never been one to cross a line of any kind and never rebelled in any form. Is very loyal and sweet albeit moody and easily annoyed but easily bashful specifically towards Janice. She needs more confidence and bravery in her but that's what her friends are here for.
Schooling: 1st Year of college, Photography and Art Major
Likes: Classical music, pasta, vanilla cake, singing, the smell of the ocean, Janice, cleaning, painting, taking pictures, French, her half/step-brother Hugo, the sunrise, the rain, Autumn, the scent of old books, Girl in Red, Cavetown, dodie, cats, aquariums, drawing, croissants, quiche, Italian food, French cuisine, magic, cute clothes, astrology, tarot readings, day dreaming, milkshakes and burgers, Panic! At The Disco, jazz
Dislikes: Liars, cheaters, thieves, when her father is angry, not being able to be free to do what she wants, being left behind, people lusting after her friends or Hugo, the idea her secrets get found out and thrown out, dogs, super hot summers and springs, smoking, fire drills, annoying people and questions, loud noises, fire unless it's safe campfire or far away fireworks
Abilities: Singing, cleaning, cooking, speaks fluent French, art, photography
Story: Maria was an only child of a mother and father who weren't the best, often not feeding or bathing her and spending money on their addictions and greed than on her and sometimes sending her out to the cold to make her sell candy bars and flowers and matches until she gives them money, or so she's told. In all honesty she doesn't remember much of her childhood, just that she had parents and would remember the cold winter. After passing out from a high fever she was taken in by the church were she met Pastor Claudius Moulin who took her in to his home and raised her with his child from a previous marriage Hugo, a boy who's half deaf and suffers from medical and physical complications and issues who is very crafty and beautiful at art.
After spending many years in France and being home schooled the Moulin family moved to America after the Pastor got a call about needing a proper man of God to the current city at age 16, there she met her current friends and spent high school hopefully crushing on Janice from afar and began a secret collection of the life she wants with make-up, different types of books than she's given, and spending a life with Janice.
Currently she goes to collage while working part-time as a singing waitress at "Dîner D'enfer" with Jac
Name Meanings: Maria - Latin for either "of the sea" or "rebellious" Moulin - French for "mill"

Should I tell you about Miranda Hayes? She's based on the speaker of "all my daughters" and I wrote her for a short story in the BAP universe (entitled "A Different Path, A Different Day") because my creative writing teacher wouldn't let me write BAP fanfic of my own story.
She's 25, of course (because all this mess proves she's alive).
She's a fearful-avoidant flutist-pianist in a band and by far its most popular member. She feels half-baked at both her instruments as if she were a fraud (totally not me projecting, and when I say that, I'm lying) because she never pursued the classical route in which she dabbled in her youth. Her parents didn't like that she took up flute. Either they said she wasn't trying hard enough and would become a disgrace, or they said she was decent, but not good, and no one wants her to get hurt when she realizes she will never match the skill of her older sister Alice. Miranda doesn't remember. (I did not realize when I wrote this that Alice is the name of one of Phoebe and Rose's friends. Is this the same Alice? In that case, Miranda is canon's Ensemble Pianist, provided that the Ensemble Pianist is female and looks like she could be biologically related to Alice.)
Miranda is afraid her future children will actually love her and she won't deserve it because she'll hurt them (totally not me projecting, and when I say that, I'm lying).
She has some precedent for that fear because she bent too much for Theo (unlike Alice, he is very obviously the same one) even though he expressed that didn't want that for her. She subsequently accused him of playing the long game to hurt her later and then broke up with him.
Miranda is in therapy with a Mrs. Clark for her fearful-avoidant attachment. (Interesting tidbit: both women's names are lifted from dodie herself, and Miranda's last name, Hayes, is lifted from Hazel Hayes.)
In the story (which I might post if there is demand), Miranda waits for her appointment with Mrs. Clark; thinks about her problems with the band, her attachment style, and her relationships with her family (including her future children) and Theo; and sees someone who looks like Alice wearing sunglasses and crying behind them. Miranda begins to realize she is not uniquely horrible, then goes to her appointment.
This is what she looks like (Picrew is rileydixondesign's Dress-Up!). I could not possibly decide between the hearts or sparkles in the background because each has a different meaning for her. Yes, she's modeled after dodie in the video where she first plays "all my daughters." Yes, Miranda's waiting for a therapy appointment because dodie's apartment's lobby sure looks like a waiting room:
