i’m sure someone talked about this when jatp first came out but i just rewatched it in years. (not because i forgot about it, not because i didn’t like it, but because it hurt so much to know this show wasn’t getting renewed and i had to avoid it in order to protect myself)
something i just love about the show is how they never bash on any other types of music. and each character has more than one genre of music to like.
yes, Sunset Curve was a rock band and Julie and the Phantoms are more rock indie/alternative rock band.
Tumblr media
but that doesn’t stop Reggie from liking country music, “I shred on the banjo,” and Jeremy Shada later on actually writing and performing “Home Is Where My Horse Is” (which I recommend heavily).
that doesn’t stop Alex from getting into Dirty Candi’s bubblegum pop music and dancing alongside Carrie on stage, (and how hard it must be for Carrie, who’s father is a rock musician, and how his fans must hate that his daughter is a fem bubblegum pop musician)
that doesn’t stop Luke from absolutely going insane over Caleb’s first performance, “The Other Side of Hollywood” with it’s 20’s era vibe and Broadway level intensity. (he was also into more classic rock as shown when he tried playing a song that Bobby/Trevor stole for Julie) (and lets not forget that he can also make the most emotional ballad of alternative rock)
and that doesn’t stop Julie from alternating between piano, rock music, pop verses, love ballads, and indie rock. and she and Flynn never once talk badly about Carrie’s music genre.
everyone can have more than one type of music they’re interested in or just show appreciation for instead of bashing it or disregarding it and i love that this show did this.

u draw jd so spiky i love it
OMG THANKS! I really appreciate that 🥹
There is actually a reason why I draw him so spikey! I wanted him to look like his Dad while also resembling his mom a bit as well. I eventually decided to made all the brothers have bits of resemblance of their parents because of genes LOL
Here's my notes about it! :3

oh my god, I watched the music video for Katy Perry's song you people were talking about. it looks surreal. it's like a parody of feminist ideas and women in general. so, okay, it's called "women's world", so women have power there. and this power is: - wearing high heels (almost every single woman in the frame does) - wearing extremely short shorts or just straight up underwear - fiddling with your chest on camera (and really way too many cleavage shots for a music video ostensibly about female power) - pretending to be men, or being like men in absurd ways (such as pissing standing up - possibly they think that working in construction as a woman is equally absurd?) - waving a pink vibrator around? - reenacting, seemingly, fetish fantasies (plugging in your cyborg legs at the gas station directly into your buttcheek) - mocking genuine female strength/acting like in porn (again!) - such as dragging a huge tractor behind you, while wearing scant clothing and on high heels (with a cleavage shot again, as a bonus) - lot's of make up, of course, and doing beauty routines - plasticly dancing for social media
Just listing all these things doesn't convey the whole impression it gives. The way it's staged, shot, the way the characters move - it's like a campy mocking misogynistic video about women. And, like someone pointed out, the whole song starts with the word "sexy". It's even impressive how off the mark it is.

Rather than trying to prove Gaylor is real and that Taylor Swift is actually just trying to secretly signal that she’s a lesbian, why don’t y’all just go and listen to openly queer artists instead of forming conspiracies to try and make your faves queer instead?
Like it says so much about how people would rather waste their time trying to prove she’s queer instead of y’know looking into queer artists and their music.
It comes across as if y’all don’t actually care about LGBT artists, you just feel like you need some justification as to why you enjoy your faves.

who r ur favorite characters in the outsiders and why?
ah boy okay
darry of course. i’m not going through nearly as much as he, but the eldest sibling trauma runs deep and i too chose to take care of 5 kids bc my heart is too big
but also lately sandy. i’ve been toying with this idea right and. okay walk with me here. what if she didn’t cheat. like we know soda is love boy number one, but me thinks sandy loved soda just as much. soda already planned on marrying her i can’t imagine they hadn’t talked about their future, so im thinking they weren’t as careful as they could have been and she got pregnant. but when her parents found out they sent her to florida (? is that right? it’s out there that’s all i recall) and somewhere in her hormonal mind was frightened that soda would change his mind abt wanting to be a dad after everything that happened and she thinks she’s saving herself the grief by lying and saying she cheated. because this way she doesn’t have to hear the disgust/anger in soda’s voice

i hate that i can't hate sabrina carpenter bc she's just another blonde white girl but she's really pretty and her songs have cheeky and funny lyrics. i like nonsense feather and espresso is another bop
no LITERALLY… her music is just so up my alley like who doesn’t want to dance in the bathroom while doing their skincare routine and jamming to espresso. her music is for the girls and I’m obsessed w that

was kinda thinking about this when I saw Renee Rapp live recently-- I didn't know her visual vibe, I'd heard a few songs here and there but I hadn't really *seen* her, and her attire at Osheaga was really casual, a jersey (baseball/basketball?) and slacks. And that was so amazing! I couldn't help thinking, the work Billie Eilish has done for how women in pop music are allowed to dress is incredible. Seeing her up there all comfortable you just know that Billie walked in her oversized tops so that Renee in her slacks could run; Billie walked through all the critcisms about how she dressed slobbily and having to assert that she didn't owe anyone a display of skin, so that Renee could be comfortable and unquestioned running up and down the catwalk in front of 10,000 people. How iconic.
And I don't think we even realised at the time how much something as simple as letting Billie dress the way she as a (then-) 17-year-old teenager dressed, could end up meaning for a future generation of women in music.
Obviously there is still way to go, there were weirdos complaining about how 'plain' Dua Lipa's Glastonbury outfit was this year (in 2024!!), l have to ask, are you at Paris Fashion Week?? She is the musical HEADLINER of an entire day of music at one of the biggest music festivals in the world, and you can't grant her the space to exist as an artist, you have to moan about her dress not being excitingly revealing enough. There's work to do, it's still dismal out there. But the space Billie Eilish has created for a most ordinarily-dressed woman popstar is still heartening.
#music#rambling away; I'll log off#man. I remember how on the other hand when I was going to my first ever gig my guitar teacher said to me#notice how plainly he's dressed? No frills. His music speaks for himself.#(The musician in question was Slash and apart from his very recognisable hat and sunglasses; he was wearing a plain white t-shirt with a#minnie mouse graphic print in the centre. I think sometimes about how not even women in rock music are afforded that.#Like this is a thing across genres#With the exception of Franz Ferdinand for whom Alex has actually said in interviews that they treated FF gigs as nights out#and so dressed like they'd be dressed for a club night out--#most other guy bands are like *picked a tee off the floor*#whereas the girls in bands I've seen-- even literally just local musicians-- the girls in our local rock bands feel compelled to#dress like it's graduation day#Like we had this really cool local band-- singer's a girl in second year of uni#keeping up with the fact that they were playing like RHCP and Muse covers on stage; fast stuff--#she was up there in a delicate dress and heels and stomping across stage n all#and the rest of her band; dudes; were quite comfortable in their t-shirts#like of course she made a choice herself and was more than capable of stomping in heels--I mean I've seen Phoebe from Lambrini Girls#JUMP OFF a 5-ft platform stage while wearing 3-inch block heels. And in a party dress!#But then again Lambrini Girls genuinely are freaks of nature and I envy anyone who's going to see them open for Amyl & the Sniffers rn#bc that's an EXPLOSIVE combo. Nonetheless. I was saying.#Part of it certainly comes from a normalisation of just superhuman strength; balance + praying there's no malfunction with your skirt#which DOES happen at rock shows more frequently than you'd imagine. It's just if you're in a good crowd they'll pretend they saw nothing#but it's certainly more practical to gig in sneakers and trousers lol. From experience!#billie eilish#renee rapp#women in music#pop music#dua lipa#Also like Billies doing it for the pop lesbians#lesbian

I’ve been exposed to waaaay too much taylor swift lately, so I went for a walk on the anti tag to cleanse my mind. I’ve seen a lot of commentary about her racism / privilege / climate crimes etc, which is all extremely important ofc, but also, like…
She’s boring. SO boring. The music, the lyrics, the ideas, everything, it’s just the most basic stuff you can imagine, just beige all around.
I get being basic but, like… at least Starbucks drinks have some semblance of taste.

I think the most important thing to understand about Firefly is that while it's true that she is a genetically modified supersoldier with a mech suit from a destroyed world who is part of an intergalactically wanted band of criminals, she is also just some guy. do you get me
