Shawn Mendes released his first EP in 2013 at the age of 15 years and over the years he saw his fan base grow bigger and bigger. Getting that level of success and fame at such a young age can take a toll on your mental health, something that we have, sadly, seen with many young artists who climb too high too fast and pay the price for it.

Shawn is the follow-up to Wonder (2020) and his first album after canceling his world tour in 2022 to take care of his mental health. After listening to the album in full, it is clear the singer was going through a lot in his personal life and needed some time off.

I haven't read much about the production of this album, but it all feels very cathartic. Every song feels like a Diary entry, the kind of things you write when you have a lot on your mind and just want to let go (most of the songs are under 3:00 minutes, except for his cover of Hallelujah, and most of the lyrics are very repetitive, like a mantra), and the arrangements include rifts and melodies that might not sound polished, but successfully transmit a sense of angst and release in line with the lyrics.

These kinds of albums are hard to analyze with objective eyes. It might not be his most successful or commercial one, but it serves its purpose and that should be enough.
