A Tale of Two Masters

@trybard and I sat in a shopping mall parking lot talking about Pokemon Black and White's Grimsley having a propensity for chess almost five years ago (ow, my back). This story, "A Tale of Two Masters," was born from our debate on which Pokemon would fit each chess piece. As I deal with writer's block from ongoing events at home, it felt appropriate to revisit the perfect muses of Grimsley and Shauntal - as well as her sudden flash of inspiration.

Before you @ me, this was written years before Kingambit existed. No, I did not change the King chess piece in my revisions.

Grimsley’s expression falls into a scowl as he crosses his arms over the red lapels of his suit.

“There’s no need to make it sound undignified. I play with cards, not hearts.”

“Who said hearts have anything to do with it?” She giggles.

“Gah.” He rolls his eyes and waves a hand dismissively. “You’re only this insufferable when you’re working on a romance novel.”

“Better than being insufferable all the time.”

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've blogged on MI4017 since I've been mad stressed about MI4011. I'm back here to blog about my process of interviewing my best friend, Shantelle!!!

I've been close friends with Shantelle in school for over 6 years and it's been about 4 years since we became best friends. We've been through our fair share of school friendship drama and hangout drama. We've survived it all together. Even though we're all grown up and busy these days (I started uni and she's getting her documents ready to study in Aussie) we still make it a point to keep in touch online.

Now that she'll be leaving for Aussie this year June or July, I can't even imagine not being able to hang out with her at the mall or over at my place. I wish I could check off our bucket list of places we want to hang out next. But in reality, we have so many things on our plates to handle.

Since she'll be leaving soon, I decided to interview her!

Ten lessons from the book For Women Only by Shaunti Feldhahn:

1. Women are wired for connection. Women need to feel connected to others in order to feel happy and fulfilled. This means having close relationships with friends, family, and romantic partners.

2. Women are relational. Women see the world through relationships. They are constantly thinking about how their actions will affect others, and they are always looking for ways to connect with people.

3. Women are emotional. Women are more likely to experience emotions than men. They are also more likely to express their emotions, both positive and negative.

4. Women are intuitive. Women have a strong gut instinct. They often know things without having to be told.

5. Women are multi-taskers. Women are able to juggle multiple tasks at once. They are also able to switch gears quickly and easily.

6. Women are survivors. Women have a natural ability to overcome obstacles. They are also resilient and resourceful.

7. Women are nurturers. Women have a natural instinct to care for others. They are also good at creating a nurturing environment.

8. Women are powerful. Women have the power to change the world. They are also strong and independent.

9. Women are beautiful. Women come in all shapes and sizes, and they are all beautiful in their own way.

10. Women are amazing. Women are simply amazing creatures. They are strong, resilient, compassionate, and intelligent.

I hope these lessons help you to appreciate the unique qualities of women.

All too often, it's what I see when I slow down long enough to consider what's going on in my own soul. Yet she understands, and she wants us to understand, that the gospel (and this is Good News indeed calls us to another way. God's Word promises us green pastures and still waters, times of refreshing rivers of living water flowing from within. So from one needy pilgrim to another, I invite you to push pause, step into these pages, let your mind be renewed, and let your racing heart slow down. Mostly I invite you come to Christ. Think of a decision (small or large) that is causing you stress, that you need to make in the coming days. What temporary things might you be looking to for a sense of direction? (For example, the path of least resistance at the moment, or what your colleagues are suggesting you do...) What unchanging truth can you look to instead? Finding Your Good Way When I moved to New York City in 1994, I spent a lot of time on the subway. Always busy, I enjoyed speeding under the gridlocked traffic to quickly reach my destination. Most of Manhattan is laid out in a clear grid pattern with numbered streets, so getting around is easy. As long as you know where you are, you know exactly where to go. I'm at 32nd and Park, so I just need to head north two blocks and turn right on 34th street. There is just one hitch: When you come off the subway at an unfamiliar stop, how do you know where you are? Surrounded by tall buildings, you have no sense of direction. In those days, there was an easy solution: we would turn in a circle until we spotted the Twin Towers, which were clearly visible at the southern tip of Manhattan. We knew that was south, so we could use that landmark to determine where we were and where to go. We based our sense of direction on the Twin Towers because they were fixed and unmoving. Until they weren't. On September 11, 2001, every New Yorker-and every person on the planet, really-saw the truth that all man-made things are temporary. In our crazy, modern lives, each of us is looking for direction: how do we get to that life of peace and joy we want, rather than the stressed and frazzled life we have? All too often, we base our decisions on things that loom large in our eyes convenience, the advice of friends, whether it avoids pain or brings pleasure. But those factors are a fickle guide. We are stressed and frazzled because we have followed temporary directional signals that do not lead to peace (the "good way," as the prophet Jeremiah put it). Jesus quoted the prophet Jeremiah when he said there is only one way to find that good way: taking on His yoke and learning from Him. (Matthew 11:29). We must stop looking to temporary signals for a sense of direction. We must look to the One who both never changes and is gentle with our human, frazzled state. As we will see on Day 2, His yoke (guiding force) will never pull us astray.
