Coming to our senses after the car crashed into the back of the bus. It will be unfair not to mention that the reference for this transition creeped in subconsciously from Shaun Tan's The Arrival. Shaun is a master storyteller with his craft so well sharpened that you can only be in the awe of it. But we all have to step back from the awe and then do the best we can with what we have and get better at our craft.

Opposite to this graphic novel, I have so many words. 

The Arrival by Shaun Tan captured me. Tan created this world that is different but familiar, included stories, moments and symbols that have such an impact it almost feels real. 

This graphic novel hit a little close to home, so maybe it is uncommon for these feelings to arise, however I am not mad about it. I love the beauty in it. The idea that there are others out there with similar histories, stories, love and heartache. 

Although I am aware that there are many readers out there who will not completely understand the feelings and emotions that Tan has created through his illustrations, it is okay. I believe it is work like this that changes the world. Allows us to be educated in more ways. Thank you for opening up my eyes and allowing me to see.

Sono nata a Gattinara, in provincia di Vercelli e mi sono trasferita a Torino nel 2001 per frequentare l'Accademia Albertina di belle Arti, dove mi sono diplomata in pittura. In seguito ho frequentato lo IED a indirizzo Illustrazione. Vivo e lavoro a Torino. Quando hai capito che l’illustrazione era la tua professione? Fin da quando ero piccola mi immaginavo da grande con una matita in mano, avrei fatto qualsiasi cosa per fare della mia passione per il disegno la mia professione. Ma ho scelto l'illustrazione quando ho scoperto che raccontare delle storie attraverso le immagini mi stimolava più che dipingere: mi dava la possibilità di indagare un mondo fatto solo di colori, racconti e di leggerezza. Il tuo linguaggio visivo è molto particolare, quali sono le tecniche e gli strumenti che usi quando disegni? Attualmente, anche se parto sempre da uno schizzo fatto a mano, uso esclusivamente i mezzi digitali; nello specifico scansiono la matita, la ripasso in vettoriale per creare una base lineare e pulita da rielaborare con Photoshop aggiungendo sfumature, textures e dettagli. Cosa pensi del tuo futuro da illustratrice? Lo vedo ben indirizzato e aperto a tante esperienze e collaborazioni. Uno degli aspetti che mi piace di più del mio lavoro è che mi da la possibilità di fare davvero tante cose diverse, conoscere molte persone e crescere moltissimo dal punto di vista professionale e non solo. Perché illustrazione per bambini? Innanzitutto perché si tratta di un universo divertentissimo! È stimolante sapere che quello che disegni sarà il passatempo di molti bambini che su quei libri impareranno, sogneranno e formeranno le loro sensibilità. Da piccola passavo ore a immedesimarmi in quei personaggi, o da ragazzina a pasticciare sui libri di scuola partendo dalle illustrazioni del libro di testo. Quali sono i tuoi punti di riferimento nel mondo dell’illustrazione? A chi ti ispiri? Non mi ispiro direttamente a qualcuno in particolare, ma a volte cerco di imparare dai migliori per sperimentare cose nuove, ad esempio ammiro Emiliano Ponzi per la sua capacità di sintesi (anche se ha un target più adulto), Marc Boutavant per i colori accesi e la chiarezza della composizione, Shaun Tan per l'oniricità. Secondo te, in che modo un buon libro illustrato può aiutare un bambino o una famiglia? Intanto credo che leggere e spiegare un libro a un bambino sia un bel momento di contatto e crescita. In più un bel racconto può dare il "là" a riflessioni, a domande e, di conseguenza, ti insegna a ragionare e immaginare. Descrivici il tuo stile. Il mio stile è lineare e allegro, cerco di fare sempre delle illustrazioni solari e ricche di dettagli, con colori brillanti ma evitando i colori fluo o innaturali. La giusta ricetta per una illustrazione efficace. Deve essere di immediata comprensione, semplice ma allo stesso tempo ricca di dettagli ed elementi che raccontino l'atmosfera di quel preciso istante. Se fossi libera da ogni vincolo... Cosa ti piacerebbe illustrare? Un'idea che ho sempre avuto è quella di illustrare le favole di Esopo. Ho fatto il liceo classico e ho i diari pieni dei protagonisti dei suoi racconti! Un altro progetto che mi piacerebbe moltissimo realizzare è un libro di ricette per bambini piccoli. Il consiglio più utile che hai ricevuto. Cercarmi un agente. Adesso infatti sono rappresentata dall'agenzia Bright Group, e so che è il modo giusto per allargare gli orizzonti e diversificare il lavoro. Che consiglio daresti a chi vuole iniziare quest’avventura? Consiglio innanzitutto di avere pazienza!! Il lavoro dell'illustratore non è il classico posto fisso e può capitare che all'inizio non sia semplice. Bisogna saper aspettare e lavorare sempre, lavorare tanto. È inoltre importante continuare a interrogarsi sul proprio stile, non aver paura di cambiare fino a riconoscere la propria identità. L'ultimo, più pratico, è quello di fare sempre un giro alla fiera del libro di Bologna: oltre a poter dare uno

sguardo al mondo dell'editoria mondiale, è possibile mostrare il proprio portfolio (con un numero ben selezionato di tavole) ad alcuni Art Director che, oltre a darti la possibilità di lavorare, danno spesso consigli molto utili e mirati.

The books with the asterisks are the last book @aiww memoir and one of the first books ( The Girl from Botany Bay) that my friend Amy recommended to me. She passed away at the end of July. I've had a running list of the dozens of books she'd suggested over the 12+ years of our quirky friendship. Anne Shirley would have said Amy and I were kindred spirits. Amy wasn't sentimental she just inquired if I read the books she suggested. The best way to honor her is to read those books and keep reading. Book recommendations are a love language. My self-doubt and anxiety are riding high. I just hope my red tree is bright and vivid, quietly waiting just as I imagine it will be.
