I am... So ashamed of myself. I've watched Sharpe's Rifles literally more than ten times and only now...
"Courtier to my Lord Bacchus, and an unremitting debtor."
I've always taken it at face value that he was a courtier who either ran away to the army to escape his debts or was sentenced to military service because of them, because that made sense to explain his presence as the posh one.
Even when it finally hit me just now, it was because I thought "it's kind of strange he names his lord so casually when it's not one I can place, so why doesn't Sharpe question it?", and only then did my brain actually take in the name, click over and say "wait".
I have shamed myself and my ancestors. That is *precisely* the sort of reference/wordplay I should catch and chuckle at.

A couple of photos from a Sharpe event at Books on the Hill, Clevedon, on the 23rd of November. It's Jason Salkey, Paul, and another actor from the Sharpe cast (sorry I can't remember his name).
Found them on the Books on the Hill Instagram account.

You might be reading too much of the Richard Sharpe novels when your dreams at night are about stopping the Redcoats, evacuating children, and trying to kill Obadiah Hakeswill by pretending to be a Royal Engineer and "accidentally" dropping boulders at him

He might not be a born officer, but by God he was a born soldier. He was the son of a whore, bereft of God, but a God-damned soldier.
Bernard Cornwell, Sharpe's Rifles
What better way to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo than to watch a couple of episodes of Sharpe television series with Sean Bean in the titular title role of the gritty swashbucking Richard Sharpe of the 95th Rifles with your downstairs neighbour, a retired French army general and Napoleonic warfare history buff.

Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe, with guest star Elizabeth Hurley as Isabella, Lady Farthingdale, in Sharpe's Enemy (1994).
This was the fourth in the series of telefilms based on Bernard Cornwell's Richard Sharpe series of novels. It adapts the 1984 novel of the same name, which was the eighth novel in the original eleven-book series (until Cornwell wrote a number of prequels and sequels), and is now the sixteenth of twenty-three novels.
