TV: Matthew Shardlake (Shardlake) - Limb Difference, Scoliosis
Tumblr media
Matthew Shardlake is the titular character and narrator of the Shardlake TV and book series.
During the dissolution of the monasteries in the Tudor era, the physically disabled barrister is sent by Thomas Cromwell to investigate the death of a commissioner in the remote town of Scarnsea. [wiki]
Arthur Hughes (actor) is 'limb different', as he has radial dysplasia, a condition that means his right arm doesn’t have a thumb or radius bone.
For him, this is a key part of playing the character of Shardlake and why he was so excited to land the role: "We want to see disabled actors in great roles regardless of whether the role is disabled or not. I was happy to just be an actor getting a lead role in something good and all the benefits that come for the community I'm happy for as well."
A central part of Shardlake’s physicality is his disability, so Arthur worked closely with costume designer Bart Cariss to create a brutal-looking leather brace that Shardlake could strap on every day as part of his character.
One of the key challenges in creating Shardlake's body was his scoliosis, as the twisting of the spine creates a curved shape in the back and can cause asymmetry in the body as the hips and shoulders aren't as aligned.
There were two versions of the cast, the one that was worn under Arthur's costume during filming, and a prosthetic that was attached to Arthur during shirtless scenes where the character was getting dressed. [Hello!]

Chapters: 1/3 Fandom: Matthew Shardlake Series - C. J. Sansom Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Jack Barak/Matthew Shardlake Characters: Matthew Shardlake, Jack Barak, Joan (Matthew Shardlake Series) Additional Tags: Jack Barak/Alice Fewterer (mentioned), handjobs, Blowjobs, Porn with Feelings, outdoors sex, mentions of disability, TV show Shardlake, An Acte for the punishment of the vice of Buggerie 1533 looming large in the background, Dissolution, vaguely canon compatible with Dark Fire Summary:
Why is it so hard to believe I'm fond of you?"
"And is that what you are, Master Barak, fond of me?" Shardlake springs the question like a trap, like he would do in court.
A dull red flush spread over Barak's face and he lowered his eyes, Shardlake could see in his working jaw and the turn of his mouth that he had not meant to mention that word. If this had been a witness he would know he had finally hit the weak point.
"After a fashion," he answered dully, looking belligerently to the side.

Shardlake tv show you won me with Cromwell in bright red and Shardlake in anything over than black lawyer's robes, this colour is excellent. And makes sense for a screen adaptation, because otherwise everyone would be wearing black all the time.
And I'll forgive you the eye-widening decision to give canon unfashionable Shardlake close cropped fashionable hair and an earring (an Earring) so long as you don't fuck up his personality. He'll drag himself all over the country to solve murders and will get the job done and not take shit from anyone, but by god all he wants to do is stay home by his warm cozy fire and read. He's a reluctant nerd lawyer hero who loves his horse and helping poor and powerless people whenever he can.

Shardlake fanfic
Has anyone found some Shardlake fanfiction? I thought Tumblr or AO3 might have some but nothing. Fanfiction the site also has nothing. So if anyone finds fanfiction, please let me know. If I find some, I will update here or make a new post. Edit: Someone told me there is fanfiction of the books but I mean fanfiction of the series. Sorry for not being clear.

Shardlake premieres today
Shardlake, the new TV series from Stephen Butchard and Justin Chadwick, is out today.
Set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries, Shardlake is a four-part drama based on the first novel in C.J. Sansom’s internationally popular Tudor murder mystery series. The eerie whodunnit adventure follows lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) and Jack Barack (Anthony Boyle) as they work to uncover the truth behind a horrific murder. The two men are sent out on a mission by the dangerous and all-powerful right-hand man to Henry VIII: Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) — and failure is not an option.
As they race to uncover the mystery, Shardlake and Barack are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order.
