Since the pandemic took over around the world, OTT platforms have seen a hike in their gross. India has evolved from Televisions and switched to online streaming space. It was sluggish to start back in 2014 when channels like “The Viral Fever” and “Qutiyapa” were releasing Indian web series on YouTube.

It is a great one time watch present on Amazon Prime. Led by Manoj Tiwari, it is a story of an Indian government officer on the field handling his duty. But the twist comes when the serviceman has to handle his family along with the duty.

Romance, comedy and drama have been the primal genres of Hindi cinema. Contemporary genres and sub-genres such as action-adventure, noir comedy, romcom (or romedy), sci-fi and road films have evolved and have emerged in Bollywood only in the recent times. Years back, however, there were a handful of films made that sowed the seeds of these modern genres and paved the way for today’s cinema. While Fearless Nadia defied every existing norm, the ensemble cast of Bombay To Goa kick started a new trend. Let us a take a sneak peak...

Hunterwali (1935)

Fearless Nadia starrer Hunterwali is one of the very first action films in Hindi cinema. Her performance as a stunt woman made her an obvious choice for various other action films, such as Lutaru Lalna (1938), Diamond Queen (1940) and Hunterwali Ki Beti (1943). A story of a princess who fights injustice with a whip, the film ran at the box office for 25 weeks, thereby becoming the highest grosser of the year. The film title became a brand name and was used to promote various products such as whips, belts, shoes and match boxes. A scene where Nadia lifted a man over her head while performing gymnastics in the middle of a chase sequence became an instant hit with the audiences. Her inability to speak in Hindi did not deter the audiences. She became a feminist icon who would defy the patriarchal order. CNN IBN listed her "Bollywood's best loved character". Known as India’s earliest and most popular stunt actress, Hunterwali Nadia became an inspiration for actors and actresses for generations to come.

Aar Paar (1954)

Aar Paar was one of the two comedy films (the other being Mr. And Mrs. 55, 1955) helmed by auteur Guru Dutt before he ventured into the melancholic zone. Aar Paar is said to be India’s one of the earliest noir comedies, a genre that was unheard of until then. Starring Guru Dutt, Shyama and Johnny Walker; it circumnavigates around the life of Kalu, a migrant taxi driver. Two women, played by Shyama and Shakila, are in love with him. The film throws light on the light and dark sides of the characters. Geeta Dutt’s happy and sad version of the song Ja Ja Ja Bewaafa picturized on Shakila add ample contrasts to the mood of the film. Like a quintessential noir film, Shakila plays a low key femme fatale who is a cabaret dancer. Shyama on the other hand plays a demure diva. Aar Paar has achieved a cult status over the years for its ahead of the time treatment. The narrative is fast paced and engaging. The film is a seamless and eclectic blend of thrill, romance, comedy and action.

Mr. And Mrs. 55 (1955)

Romantic comedies (or romcoms) are essentially considered to be a genre that evolved in the west. The Hindi film industry has adopted the genre much later and improvised it to fall in line with the Indian sensibility. Boy meets girl, sparks fly which gives rise to a series of dramatic circumstances that ultimately results in their ‘happily ever after’ – this forms the crux of any romcom. Guru Dutt’s Mr. And Mrs. 55, one of the earliest romcoms, was unlike any film made back then. The Guru Dutt-Madhubala starrer is memorable due to the poetic style adopted by the director. Witty dialogues, subtle humour, sparkling camaraderie between the leads, fine song and dance sequences and fluid narrative peace struck a chord with the audiences. Mr. And Mrs. 55 reinforced the age of stolen glances and bitter-sweet hauls of separation. The narrative was a gush of fresh wind as it was breezy and full of joie de vivre; something that was unlike the slapstick comedies made during those times. It is a film that became a prototype of the modern age romcom.

Mr. X In Bombay (1964)

Shantilal Soni’s Mr. X In Bombay is said to be the first Hindi language science fiction film. This Kishore Kumar, Randhir and Madan Puri starrer revolves around a poet who becomes invisible using a potion concocted by a scientist. Unlike the modern day sci-fi films that abound in advanced VFX techniques and science-based phenomenon, Mr. X In Bombay is a romance drama where the invisible protagonist is thought to be dead and goes missing. It does not constitute the quintessential futuristic elements that all science fictions are based on, such as time travel, aliens, interstellar travel and robots. The film became a major trendsetter for subsequent films like Mr. India (1987), Gayab (2004) and Mr. X (2015) with protagonists possessing the power to become invisible.

Bombay To Goa (1972)

A remake of the Tamil film Madras To Pondicherry, S. Ramanathan’s Bombay to Goa started the trend of road films. It is the story of a young girl (played by Aruna Irani) who is on the run after stealing her parent’s money. Also starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrugan Sinha, the film is first of its kind – it has a bunch of bus-bound people speaking different tongues, having different ambitions and belonging to different walks of life. The film, for its sparkling bus ride, became a quintessential masala entertainer and a memorable flick.
