A short ficlet about Shanoa discovering her knack for drawing.
Shanoa’s room, lent to her by Father Nikolai, is dark, bare, with only a bed and a small desk for her needs. Owning nothing, she brought nothing with her.
The similarity with its dweller is the reason she has taken to draw it, helped by the pink light of the cracking dawn filtering through the window.
She must have been a good artist, in her past life. Despite knowing nothing, holding a pencil comes easy to her: her strokes are quick, straight, precise, her shadowing is strong. Shanoa might ask Master Barlowe about herself, the next time she goes to ask him for directions.
She taps the pencil to her lips. Master Barlowe would be displeased with her, if he saw her wasting time instead of chasing Albus. She does not wish to disappoint her mentor, so she will keep it to herself.
Daniela, on the other hand, would be proud of her. The woman has been nothing but kind to Shanoa: she supposes she has confused her for a granddaughter of hers. The thought does not trouble her. Daniela has shown her, between a cup of tea and a slice of pie, her own old paintings: Shanoa’s still heart could not grasp the emotions that the old woman wanted her to experience, but not even she in her ignorance could not deny that Daniela was a master of her craft: she, too, painted landscapes, much like what she asked of Shanoa, and the delicate hues and attention to detail brought them to life. Shanoa did not understand how such a talented person could praise her objectively inferior work; but it wasn’t up to her to understand.
The drawing on her sketchbook is similar to the room around her. Shanoa has managed to capture every line of the walls and floor, the softness of the linen sheets, the shadows cast by the desk. (She does not draw herself: she does not know how.) It is not an interesting sight, not as beautiful as the ocean seen from the lighthouse, or the droplets of water splashed by the waterfall, or the solemn stained-glass windows of the church. But it is coming out accurately, and Shanoa does not feel the need to stop before she is finished.
Perhaps her lack of emotions allows her to perceive reality as it is. It is a plausible, but not comforting realization.
Why is she doing this, then?
Shanoa has drawn for Daniela, because Daniela asked her a favor, and Shanoa had found no reason to refuse. When she returned with her sketches in the sketchbook, she has watched Daniela’s face light up with a smile she could never return.
No one asked her to draw her own room. She has simply decided to try.
Shanoa wants to. And so, before the sun rises high in the sky, she would be finished with it.
Daniela might share with her another story about her grandfather, and Shanoa would sit there to listen to her talk. It is something to look forward to.
Shanoa adds the last flourishes to the drawing, and at last, it is done. But the stark view of the room does not leave her satisfied with a job well done. Something is missing.
Shanoa is alone in her room. Yet, she decides by herself to add two cats in the drawing. She decides to include Ink, Daniela’s cat, and Tofu, Laura’s: they seem to like her the most, and Shanoa finds the act of petting them relaxing.
They are harder to draw from memory. The cats don’t quite look like themselves. It is not accurate to reality. But something about the crude drawing satisfies her. Now, it truly is hers.

MALIGNED YURI BRACKET: Round one
How is Karen Aijo/Mahiru Tsuyuzaki (Revue Starlight) maligned?
"Yes hikaren. But have you considered."
How is Shanoa/Laura (Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia) maligned?
"well already the cv games get ignored because of the Netflix show and order of Ecclesia is even less talked about and shalaura is only known to like. My friends. Pretty much all content that exists for them is by one of my pals. come on Shanoa is a yuri icon. every female villager flirts with her. every female enemy flirts with her. she’s canonically not interested in men. please." "CV fans we have to pull through, I've never seen a poll account acknowledge the games." "#pitting shalaura against twewy and tales characters is fucking sick in the head. they ARE the most maligned for this"

Propaganda under the cut.
Samantha Groves AKA Root:
She's a hacker that starts off as an antagonist and even kidnaps a main character, and tortures some people. She ends up saving the world from an AI takeover/apocalypse. She's a self proclaimed psychopath and worships The Machine, a true AI she considers a god. She's a lesbian and in love with another main character Shaw, who she also kidnaps at some point (but Shaw shoots her so they're even). She is a girlboss because she's an extremely competent hacker and is very good with a gun. But she also has her goofy and useless lesbian moments. She's such an interesting and layered character.
Shanoa:
Shanoa is a member of a Dracula-worshipping cult called Ecclesia, to which she has sworn her life- literally. Unbeknownst to her, Dominus, the dark power she is fighting to wield is the power to offer herself up as sacrifice to revive Dracula, and it's already taken away her emotions and memories. To gain this power, and to perform her duty to Ecclesia's leader/her teacher/adoptive father Barlowe, she's willing to obey any order... including the order to kill. Shanoa's skillset include magical Glyphs, which allow her to cast spells, materialize giant weapons, summon monsters, and more. Though a magic based character, she's extremely strong and agile and more of a magical knight. Eventually, after murdering her brother Albus and discovering the truth about Ecclesia, she decides to bring down the castle and kill the "god" her master Barlowe had built his broken, evil cult around in a final act of redemption, and it's also just really cool. She frequently compares herself to a living weapon, and she is a classic #girlboss in my opinion. There's more I could go over but this is already getting way too long lol. Everyone please play Order of Ecclesia NOW

Castlevania game I'd like to see: something centred on Shanoa fighting a non-Dracula villain during the period after OoE where she's rebuilding the Belmont clan. I just think that would be a really neat premise, playing as the leader of the Belmonts at a time when they're starting to flourish again. I think you could really do something with that in a decently large-scale action-RPG!
While I'm at it, maybe lean into how, where most CV protagonists are merely vaguely religious, Shanoa is outright a Catholic clergywoman (I think) and presumably pretty devout. In particular I like the idea of having her praying to the saints for intercession.
(But filtered through the lens of "Japanese gothic fantasy action game, so not so much a theological examination as a gameplay feature where she gets a Devil Trigger-esque flaming sword warrior angel super mode by praying to Saint Michael, or prays to Saint Cecilia and a piano falls on the boss' head, etc.)
Also, the game's Vergil also uses Latin in their spells, but is audibly differentiated from Shanoa by pronouncing them according to Classical Latin rules instead of Ecclesiastical Latin.
(So Shanoa says, EG, Vol Falcis like "Vol Falchis," but the rival says it like "Wol Falkis.")
