maria's obsession with the rose has to be known in order for the letter ploy to work in the way it does. therefore it has to be someone who not only knows about the marked rose but is also in a position to witness this exchange with maria ie an individual in the rose garden at this very moment. and given all the mental gymnastics i already did in narrowing down a suspect that only leaves two prime "beatrice" candidates in kanon and kumasawa. isn't that interesting!

assigning umineko characters a place in the prince-princess-witch trichotomy:part 2

Battler: the prince (that wasn't there).Battler is very interesting in the way that he is both Utena and Dios coded. Utena because he has good intentions and tries to be chivalrous (the scene where he helps Kanon in EP 1 comes to mind ,"I'm not the kinda guy to let the waitress pick up the fork for me" also extremely Anthy/Rose Bride coded moment for Kanon) but he is also extremely dumb. He might have lived away from the family for six years but he still has a rich boy attitude when it comes to certain matters(like the comment of turning Rokkenjima into a golf course), seemingly being unaware of the severity of certain things that are allowed in the family (shrugging off the sitting order as a "remnant" of male chauvinism when it still affects the Ushiromiya women, the whole scene with Shannon) . There is also the infamous small bombs comment. But even so, Battler has the best intentions in mind, even if he executes them horribly and hurts people along the way just like Utena. In the same way that rgu is the story of how Utena comes to understand Anthy despite that, so is umineko for Battler and "Beatrice"/Sayo respectively. Unfortunately it is also the lackluster execution of good intentions that contribute to his Dios coding. His promise to Sayo to get her away from Rokkenjima on a white horse and the princely imagery it inspires is reminiscent of the (similarly empty) promise Dios is initially thought to have made to little Utena. In the end, both men are illusions of the idea of the prince with the difference lying in the people the made the promise to; Utena chased after the illusion and it didn't break until the end of the show with an open ended but overall positive conclusion while Sayo held onto it for a time that she thought was a thousand years and eventually was crushed but in a way that created the witch, Beatrice.

Jessica: the prince. She is a masculine girl with a similar outgoing and chivalrous personality as Utena. Her relationship to Kanon is extremely similar to that of Utena and Anthy. She loves him and wants the best for him but the class difference between them skews the dynamic in a way where she doesn't actually know him (the scene with her refuting his claims to being furniture is similar to the scene where Utena doesn't understand why Anthy doesn't fight against her bullies: well meaning but ignorant). He does love her too and he himself tries to be a "prince" for her, which is mostly a result of him seeing himself as disposable furniture due to his self-loathing and conditioning (also very Anthy-like).

George: the (model?) prince. Mature, level-headed, polite, from a good family and with a fiancee he wants to start a family with, he is seemingly the archetype of the upstanding prince. Things are more complicated though: a marriage to Shannon, a servant, would be unacceptable and he states that he would fight and break off from his own family to marry her, something definitely prince-like.After that is said and done though, he and Shannon will fit into a typical family life and he will have a job while Shannon will stay home to take care of their kids, taking a similar position of servitude like that in Rokkenjima. In addition, he has a crippling inferiority complex, putting his marriage and Shannon's happiness on hold untill he builds "his own kingdom" even if he must already have enough money to support them and being jealous of 12 year old Battler for being more popular with 10 year old Shannon when he was 17 due to his own crippling fear of women at time, which he still tries to make up for with a fake bravado attitude (especially in his marriage proposal to Shannon).With that reveal, a lot of "joking" remarks towards Battler have a much more insidious tone. He presents himself as a prince but that in reality is an illusion to hide his own personal failings. Even if he goes against his family and saves Shannon from Rokkenjima, he will still fit himself into a similar comfortable position of power in another hierarchy while Shannon will have to do in a similar position of servitude below him. After all, she is a princess. What more could she want?

Maria: the witch. Even if her mother tries to fit her in clothes reminiscent of a princess gown, crown and all, she'd still prefer to be a witch. By an early age she was marked as different from other kids due to her lack of a father and peculiar mannerisms. Any attempt to fit in was a failure and additional neglect and shunning from her mother turned her towards the world of occult and magic, where she befriended a multitude of creatures including the witch Beatrice, which helped her learn a lot of things pertaining to magic. Turning the world of witches from one filled with darkness to one filled with rainbows, she declares herself one. After all, since she couldn't be accepted as a princess, maybe she could be accepted as a witch.

Wait wait wait - Umineko AU sounds very cool… how would it work?? Who’s who?

By AU I mostly mean like all the AUs running through Harrow's head at the end of Harrow the Ninth, so it works about as well as a fever dreams brought on by brain surgery undoing itself, but:

Battler: Gideon (duh) Shannon and Kanon: Harrow, with the servant name Harron George and Jessica: Ianthe. Though unlike George she isn't going to propose secretly, she's doing it in front of everyone because she's a messy bitch who loves the drama. Beatrice: Alecto Kinzo: John Natsuhi: Pelleamena (which I guess makes Priamhark Krauss by default?)

The Cousins/Uncles/Aunts: All the Canaan House postulants, instead of a "Family Meeting" it's a Nine Houses Meeting.

G1deon, Mercymorn and Augustine would play similar roles Genji, Kumasawa and Nanjo, in the sense of being John's "inner circle" more than anything. Crux and Aiglamene are there too (or, Crux might be off sick and fuming about not being there). Pyrrha might be alive, and off the island.

So: Harrow is an orphan, the miraculous survivor of a deadly gas leak at Fukuin House (as far as she knows). Because she was the only child at the orphanage, she was brought into The Ninth House as a servant at a very young age, where she showed a startling necromantic aptitude. At some point a young Ianthe and Coronabeth are orphaned and adopted or fostered to the "childless" Ninth House. Coronabeth runs off to join BoE, or is kidnapped by them in an attack that kills Naberius, I'm not sure. Gideon is G1deon and Pyrrha's kid (as far as she knows) and after she ran off as a teenager to join the cohort (without bringing Harrow with her, as they'd agreed) Harrow kind of, lost her necromancy. It came back a few years ago, when the Body started appearing to her, but she's kept quiet about it.

I do have a vague outline of an actual full "game" with serial murders, where a whole bunch of stuff with Jod's revenant and embryo swapping and secret conspiracies comes out, but more likely it would just end up a Harrow the Ninth style AU in which, after Harrow tips over the wheelbarrow and Gideon helps her meetcute style, she sees Alecto the Golden Witch standing atop the rose arch asking "Is this how it happens?"

Umireread: Legend of the Golden Witch - Chapter 16: The Golden Witch

The following contains spoilers for the entirety of Umineko. Please do not read if you are yet to finish it.

Given Chapter 17 is more of an Epilogue than an actual chapter, there’s something to be said about how, for “Legend of the Golden Witch”, the halfway point is “Legend of the Gold” and the final chapter is “The Golden Witch”. There’s no real meaning to this, I just think it’s a neat little thing in the choice of naming.

Full disclosure - I remember coming out of my first readthrough enjoying the prospects of Jessikanon a lot. I’ll be keeping an open mind and find myself willing to change my perspective if the story swings me that way, but I vastly preferred the idea of Kanon with Jessica than Shannon with George.

Yet again, everyone knows that knowing the meaning behind the magic circle will do no good, and simply upset them, but Battler decides to pursue the truth regardless. A harmful truth is better than a blissful ignorance.

Once again - we find ourselves in a parallel of the scene with the receipt. Everyone took Eva’s word for it when she literally could have been lying about it. Once again, no-one other than Natsuhi can confirm the letter wasn’t there before she placed the canned food, nor can she defend against the accusation that she was the one who placed it.

Hey, so about all those phone lines being out?

This definitely isn’t a plot hole, as it’s addressed by the characters in universe, so it’s pretty safe to say that they were indeed tampered by the servants and fixed at some point (if not by Yasu making the most of the time while everyone was in the study, then by one of the servants on the way back to the parlour.) Either that or, you know, magic.

Oh, this is an interesting misdirect. I like this one a lot - providing a solution to a problem that didn’t even really exist in the first place. That’s surely how Kinzo was drawn out of the study, and not, you know, him not being alive in the first place.

Yasu has no knowledge of this, right? She wasn’t there to see Battler give Maria the charm back (it would be contrived if she somehow had eyes on that moment without anyone seeing her), and I’m not entirely convinced that Maria would be bringing up the anti-magic charm to Beatrice of her own volition. With that in mind, I think it’s worth chalking this up to Yasu having a soft spot for Maria, not wanting her to die horribly - something which would match up with the second message bottle also seeing the little girl survive to the end. I think that does make the wilted rose a weak point earlier, since it seems out of character for someone who clearly cares for Maria’s wellbeing to actively torment her, but I suppose it’s not impossible to rule it as something Yasu did for the greater cause at hand, especially considering everyone would be dead within 48 hours anyway.

LIKE THE HEROINE OF A TRAGEDY.

Natsuhi’s final duel here is a thing of beauty - she’s the heroine of a tragedy, but that was the entirety of the episode behind her. Plagued with headaches, having her loved ones torn away from her, accused of atrocities far beyond her control and thrust into a leadership position that she did not want - Yasu’s writing has ensured that Natsuhi suffers at every single turn of the past two days. But not here. She’s allowed to go out honourably.

I see this as a humanised element of Yasu - a realisation towards the end of her work that, while she’s used Natsuhi as an instrument of catharsis, tormented the one who has ruined her life, perhaps she has been a little too harsh in what she has put her through. How she herself has ignored the human behind the monster; and reduced Natsuhi to naught but someone deserving of torture. In this moment of lucidity, Yasu relents, and allows Natsuhi to have a fitting ending - one where she still dies, one where she does not make it to the golden land - but not one of embarrassment. Yasu is not a cold hearted killer. There is that part of her that allows her to see the best in even the worst of people; no doubt the same part that allows her to let Rosa go out so elegantly in Episode 2 despite her horrific treatment of Maria. Yasu is human. And I think that’s beautiful.

Once again, Jessica’s VA steals the show for Episode 1. Everyone gets really good moments, no-one lets a scene down or shows any weakness, but between the wretched wailing and asthma attacks, no-one matches her level of performance.

Yet.

A gentle nod to the format of the gameboards - but a stark reminder that, at the end, it all returns to nothing. An explosive finale that ensures nothing is left behind. What a way to send us out.

And so the clock rolls over from 24 to 0.

Sleep peacefully, Beatrice.

“Why are we here? Why am I in chains?” Tankhun’s voice rose in volume with each question. On the last question, he shook his arms violently, rattling the chains, as he demanded, “Tell me now!”

Vegas flinched with his whole body, almost sending the tray of food careening onto the floor before he steadied himself.

Tankhun’s furrowed eyebrows softened. He stared at Vegas for several long moments, his gaze lifting and falling, taking in Vegas entirely before he let out a sigh. “Ah, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t yell at you.” He pat the ground beside him, smiling slightly. “Come, sit. Show me what you brought.”

Vegas listened, carefully bringing his tray of food with him and setting it down in front of Tankhun as he also sat beside him.

Tankhun cheered. “Koko Crunch? My favorite!”

Vegas smiled and ducked his chin. “I couldn’t get the milk without Papa’s servants seeing. I’m sorry.”

“Ah, now, that’s not what you say when someone thanks you.” Tankhun bumped his shoulder into Vegas’. “What do you say?”

“You’re welcome,” Vegas said dutifully, his cheeks warm. “I picked out the nicest apple.”

“What a sweet cousin you are.” Tankhun squeezed Vegas’ wrist, ducking his head to meet Vegas’ eye when he smiled. “Thank you, Nong Vegas.”

the question to me now is if she appeared so physically last time, as she's really only been interacting with the servants... i guess she hasn't interacted with anyone who definitely wouldn't see her like natsuhi, and kyrie has the potential. she said before that she was too weak to be seen by anyone other than shannon or kanon but it seems like she's gained a lot of strength so genji could be able to see her. i just keep thinking back to the kitchen scene where everyone was looking at her but battler couldn't see her. if she's more visible than that, it means she's gotten stronger with the passage of a loop which has Implications For Sure. Her having been this visible the whole time also has implications but differently..

Jazz felt like screaming.

She loved her little brother, she did. She was so proud of how far he's come in the last few years. Organizing the Infinite Realms, creating the truce with Amity and the local ghosts, and finally getting his school life together to apply to college.

She would have appreciated a call of warning in regards to his coronation.

Would have been fantastic to schedule the arrival of the delegation.

Maybe plan something more than the spectral diplomats showing up at any hour of the day.

Or night.

No matter where she was.

(It's a good thing that the ones who showed up while she was in the bathroom were other girls. But still.)

Phenomenal even if they could have figure out just one visit even!

There's only so much she can do or say to cover up all the spectral visitors on her college campus. Especially if she wants to avoid announcing a kingdom larger than the entire planet to the world.

She could live without another apocalyptic war, they've avoided it in too many snipped timelines.

Hence the needing to scream.

As it stands, Jazz sits in a small quiet nook of the campus library rubbing her temples.

The most recent messenger standing- no he was floating an inch off the ground of course he was- a few feet away.

"Your Highness...?" he lifted slightly from his bow.

"How many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me Princess or Your Highness?" she huffs.

"This lowly serv-" he drops into a lower bow

"Stop, no," she cuts him off, sitting up. Ancients, they were all too polite and formal for her to handle.

He floats there waiting.

She sighs, dropping her hands. "What brings you here now?"

"A letter from Her Highness, Princess Danielle Ellie Phantom addressed to Princess Jasmine Rose Fenton." He pulls a scroll out from his satchel.

Jazz is going to absolutely throttle Ellie.

"Shall this servant read out the letter for-"

"That won't be necessary." Jazz holds out her hand. The ghost lowers his head as he approaches to lay the scroll upon her hand. "If that is all, you are dismissed."

"Certainly," he backs away with another bow before promptly vanishing.

Shannon, her classmate, turns the corner.

"Oh, it's just you, Jazz," she says in mild surprise. "I thought I heard someone else over here."

"Sorry, was on the phone and had it on speaker," Jazz lies.

"You know, there's a no cell phone rule here," Shannon arches an eyebrow, disbelieving making Jazz wince. Shannon's gaze falls on to the somewhat glowing scroll. "What's that?"

"A gift from my little sister," Jazz pulls it closer to tuck it away into her bag. "Have you finished your paper on the innate and conditioned reactions to threat in rats with amygdaloid lesions?"

Shannon's eyes light up and she plops into the seat across from her, chatter going a mile in a minute on her topic.

Erikatrice (pt.1) - Interpreting Counting, Rules & Perspective

Continuing my introducing Erikatrice post I'll start with my exegesis in (A) how Erika is included in the people/human counting, (B) how I can explain certain things like culprit Erika and (C) what do we or the characters see: truth or illusions? This post discusses (A)

(A) Counting - personas, impersonation, true number of people

Thesis: Erika is a persona of Yasu.

I'd say in End's and Dawn's world Erika's role is more pragmatic than a emotionally one. Following the hint of the reveal of an unknown man Yasu's ability -having different roles- is more flexible. At the end of EP4 she showed Shannon, Kanon and Beatrice but I think it's ok that 1 or 2 more can be added or changed. I know people thinks that the (evil) man from 19 years ago IS the true Sayo/Yasu but I couldn't find a good reason why it should be true (other than the true gender hint). By that argument Sayo can be whoever she likes if she changes the voice. I want to have a more reasonable approach by looking on Erika's traits and Yasu's motives and goals whose I want to inspect more closely in a later part. If we believe Dawn's and Requiem's depiction of Yasu's and Battler's common hobbies -reading mystery books- I can see why Erika is snarky like Beatrice and why she is a self-proclaimed detective. While Erika didn't get womanly attributes she got intelligence and mystery knowledge. On the other hand Beatrice's appearance was Battler's supposed ideal woman. But the mystery hobby is the main reason why Beatrice challenged Battler to murder mystery "games". That's why I believe in a connection of Erika and Yasu since she can appear in front of Battler to test him. Showing why Erika and Yasu are the same human is talked in a later chapter where I show my solution to the logic error.

Thesis: Yasu is impersonating another human

Genji claimed he called the police and the Coast Guard which is pretty much a lie because it would break the closed circle. But this is a good hint that the call from the Coast Guard told the servants about a girl, probably . Having an believable excuse Yasu could put on a new masquerade with a new background. Maria is easy to foolish. It's also suspicious she stopped searching for her rose which means Yasu could introducing the naive girl her new role. Bernkastel mentioned that the blue hair color isn't the natural one so it's likeley Erika is wearing a wig. Using other identities (the original Beatrice) is hinted since EP1 so it's a fair assumption. Using a name of a different person has interesting effects and my theory needs to bypass many rules but that later in rules.

Main Argument: There are two Erikas (Furudo)

I think it's strange that Lambda says "worlds" instead of "games". This means she could really mean the whole earth. If a real human Erika Furudo existed then she didn't existed until End...therefore the Erika Lambda is talking about is a fictional one. Bingo. It's like the grounddog day loop always includes an Erika Furudo but not the one we can see on screen. Which makes the World of End and Dawn special because a second Erika Furudo existed there and I think it's the Erika persona Yasu is using here. The influending part is just a plus and it confirms Yasu wasn't using Erika at all in Episodes 1-4 and there was no need to create her implying the two Erika games are special cases. In that case I will use Human!Erika for the drowned dead Erika and Yasu!Erika for the gameboard one and Meta!Erika for the one in meta scenes.

Thesis: The parting and introduction line Meta!Erika is using is from the Human!Erika

(Using the official translation) She said it: "This is the detective Furudo Erika's final parting line...and self-introduction!!" . The finale of Dawn is kind of self-realising and acceptance of Meta!Erika without Battler and Beatrice realising it. I can see some people are struggling with the red truths because previously Shannon and Kanon are separate people and now they are supposingly the same person. But I thought it makes perfect sense they aren't counted together. And if Meta!Erika citing someone else explains pretty much else because human!Erika is dead anyway.

Theses: The counting doesn't matter with Yasu!Erika.

She adds one person, nothing more . If the parting+introduction line is a intentionally misleading red truth then we have not to worry about contradictions with too many humans. Yasu!Erika is on the island and Human!Erika is the sea.

Final thoughts: Nothing really to say here. It happens to leave out many explanations and analaying isn't my strenght. When I release motives etc. it should be a little bit clear even if you don't believe in this.

romance book recs!!

romance is my feel good genre, and it’s also usually somewhat easier to read during stressful times, so here’s a list of some books that are either romance or have a romance element i feel like mentioning.

(EDIT: I STAYED UP TILL 2 AM DOING THIS HELP. this is why some of the comments. don’t make any fucking sense.)

romance books and authors:

CONTEMPORARY:

1. The Bromance bookclub series by Lyssa Kay Adams (A group of men form a bookclub dedicated to romance books in order to understand women, improve their relationships and become better men. It’s funny, cute, and all about dismantling toxic masculinity one romance book at a time)

2. Mariana Zapata books (The queen of slowburn romance. The only book I’ve read by her is ‘Under Locke’, but ‘From Lukov with love’ and ‘Kulti’ have rave reviews. There is so much build up and SO much sexual tension with a great pay off)

3. Milly Johnson books (A uk author whose books are primarily set in the north, these are total feel good books. Not so much graphic and more romantic, but her characters are great and her plot lines really hook you in.)

4. The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren (Super cute, quick enemies-to-lovers story about a bridesmaid who has to go on a honeymoon with the best man when the bride and groom get food poisoning. Obviously this means the holy of holies: fake relationship!)

5. Well met by Jen De Luca (Oh my gosh! Super fun, the characters are just wonderful especially our heroine. A hate-to-love romance set at a renaissance fair! All about overcoming the limits you set on yourself and rethinking your first impressions.)

6. Katherine Center books (My personal favourites are ‘How to walk away’ about a woman who falls for her PT after a near fatal plane crash. And ‘Happiness for beginners’ about a woman taking part in a wilderness trail with her brothers annoying best friend. She writes such great plots and you really feel all the emotions!)

7. Mhairi Mcfarlane books (my personal favourites are ‘Here’s looking at you’ about a woman who comes face to face with her high school bully years later - only he doesn’t recognize her. And he’s not awful? Don’t worry. I know how that synopsis sounds. He’s not excused his actions, but you also understand how he’s grown and changed. It definitely gets you in the feels though. As does ‘You had me at hello’ Which is about a couple from university meeting again years later. God this woman can write angst and yearning!!)

8. A part of me by Anouska Knight (On the same day she and her husband have been accepted into the adoption process, their marriage implodes. This has such a cute romance which follows hate-to friends- to love and it’s v funny)

9. Southern Eclectic series by Molly harper (Just as it sounds. Southern small town romance with a great, quirky cast of characters)

10. Maggie’s man by Lisa Gardner (writing as Alicia Scott) (An escaped convict kidnaps a woman from the courthouse to act as his hostage whilst he tries to prove his innocence. Surprisingly funny and warm. Maggie as a heroine is an absolute joy. They’re sort of chaotic together and it’s a wild ride.)

11. The Mister by E.L James (LISTEN OK - SIT BACK DOWN - It’s not winning awards but it’s actually decent! I was skeptical, but I will admit I was won over. I mean parts are cheesy but it’s so addictive. Basically a rich man falls for his cleaning lady - but it’s also about the yearning. It’s also quite action packed as there’s danger, drama and a chase across europe to get the girl.)

12. RECENT Colleen Hoover (Now, you may enjoy older CH books. Personally I find them very problematic. Now I’ve really enjoyed her recent books though. Especially ‘Without Merit’ and ‘It ends with us’ and ‘Regretting you’. High angst, high drama, dark topics for all of her books. But you can tell she’s matured with her writing. She isn’t for everyone but they’re addictive, fast paced reads.

13. The Austenland duology by Shannon Hale (You might have seen the Austenland movie - The cutest, cheesiest, sweetest, campiest movie ever. Well there’s a book! It’s about women who go on a holiday and live their own Jane Austen story with actors. The first book leans towards Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield park. The second book is more Northanger abbey and Emma.

14. Brigid Kemmerer contemporaries (She is an auto-buy author for me, especially her contemporaries. She writes the best teenage characters, the best teenage boys I’ve ever read about. Her characters are real, she writes about kids trying their best, struggling, and being good, and kind, and the world not being kind to them. Usually the books have a pov from both the female and male love interest. I would rec any of them tbh. ‘Letters to the lost’ comes before it’s companion novel ‘More than we can tell’. I loved ‘Call it what you want’ with has modern Robin Hood elements!!!! seriously she is my favourite YA contemporary author.

15. Sophie Kinsella books (If you haven’t picked up her stand alone novels then what are you doing???? she is the queen!!!! Personal favourites are ‘Can you keep a secret’ and ‘I’ve got your number)

16. A quiet kind of thunder by Sara Barnard (I love her ok. Her books are short and sweet but she packs a punch. TBH these aren’t primarily romance, they’re more just about teenage girls but this one has a good romance element so I’m putting it on here. It’s about Steffi, a selective mute who sometimes communicates with basic sign language who is assigned to look after the new boy at school Rhys, who is deaf.)

17. Meet me at the museum by Anne Youngson (GORGEOUS! moving, tender. A lonely housewifes strikes up a correspondence with a widowed museum curator in Denmark. Oh gosh. I just love this one. It’s about friendship, love, grief, second chances, the choices we make. Seriously love this one and it’s not that long.)

FANTASY:

1. Sorcery of thorns by Margaret Rogerson (Elisabeth has grown up in the great library, protecting grimoires with powers and fearing sorcerers. When a dangerous grimoire is released, she’s forced to team up with an enigmatic sorcerer and his demonic servant in order to save the world.)

2. Sky in the deep duology by Adrienne Young (A viking inspired story about a warrior who is captured by the tribe she is at war with. Such good tension and it’s also got a lot of action. Battle couple romance! Mutual respect! Hate to love!)

3. The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley (I’ve reread this book once but will end up reading it again. It’s a time travel romance about a woman staying in cornwall dealing with the death of her sister who is transported back and forth to the 17th century. It’s a favourite. The romance is wonderful but the stakes are really high too. I also love ‘Belleweather’ by the same author)

4. An ember in the ashes series by Sabaa Tahir (Oh god, the romance. THE ROMANCE! it’s so much. The angst, the pining, the longing. The first book follows Laia, part of a slave class in a roman inspired world. She begins spying in the top military academy and meets Elias, a reluctant soldier. This is a proper fantasy series with only the first three books out, but it’s so great.)

5. Alias Hook by Lisa Jensen (Let me just copy the blurb ok: “Meet Captain James Benjamin Hook, a witty, educated Restoration-era privateer cursed to play villain to a pack of malicious little boys in a pointless war that never ends. But everything changes when Stella Parrish, a forbidden grown woman, dreams her way to the Neverland in defiance of Pan's rules.” I MEAN COME ON. a gorgeous adult fairytale with love and redemption at the center.

6. The Mediator series by Meg Cabot (Obviously Meg Cabot is the most iconic and we stan. But this series is my absolute favourite by her. About Suze Simon, a kickass, no nonsense mediator - Someone who helps ghosts move on to the other side. Sometimes by force. She has to move house and ends up sharing her room with a 100 year old hot ghost named Jesse. The tension. The angst. THE BANTER!!!!)

7. House of Earth and Blood by Sara J Maas (a half fae half mortal girl tries to solve a murder with the help of a fallen angel. It’s a LONG book, but for me personally it flew by. It’s a big new fantasy world but the romance has a great build. Overcoming grief! Being normal together! Being in danger together! THE UST! the characters are so good. I ahven’t been this impressed by a new series for a while)

8. Cursebreakers series by Brigid Kemmerer (yep, she gets another mention. This one is a beauty and the best retelling about a man forced to relive the same season over and over, becoming a literal beat, until a girl from our world can break the curse. The second book, following secondary characters, is my fave so far. But both feature kickass ladies and those small romantic moments BK is so good at)

9. A court of thorns and roses series by Sara J Maas (a fae inspired beauty and the beast retelling. The only time you support a ship switch. Also the secondary ships are getting their own books and oh my god. I’m so excited.)

HISTORICAL/CLASSICS/MILLS AND BOON

1. Jane Austen (The original rom com queen, obviously. Pride and prejudice and Emma are faves. Also I have a major soft spot for the alwayc chaotic and underrated Northanger Abbey)

2. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell (Actually might be my favourite classic ever. Often described at an industrial p&p. Margaret, from the south, comes face to face with the harsh reality of the world when she moves up north and comes face to face with a brooding millowner. There’s obviously a lot more nuance than that but. THE PINING!!!!!! THE MISCOMMUNICATION! THE DRAMA!)

3. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer (You might have seen the film. Please also read the book. Told entirely in letters. The sharp witted author Juliet Ashton falls in love with Guernsey and it’s characters whilst researching what happened there during the war. Funny, moving and romantic.)

4. The Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn (A butterfly hunter foils her own kidnap and is paired together with a reclusive natural historian. They solve mysteries together. They can’t admit they wanna sleep together. The tension.......unbearable. See also the Julia Grey mysteries by the same author)

5. The warrior knight and the widow by Ella Matthews (So last year I discovered Mills and Boon and I have no shame about it whatsoever. This is a medieval beauty and the beast retelling about a woman being escorted to her fathers estate by an enigmatic and scarred knight. She’s hoping to convince her father to let her steward her own lands, and of course trying not to fall for her escort.)

6. The bareknuckle bastards series by Sarah Maclean (A badass, brooding trio of siblings who rule the underbelly of Covent Garden fall for smart, beautiful women. Opposites attract, Good girl/bad boy, strong women, banter. Super fun historical romance)

7. Redeeming the reclusive earl by Virginia Heath (I just read this and it was seriously cute!!!! And book where the hero blushes even once is a good book in my opinion. Basically aspiring antiquarian named Effie barrels into the life of a new earl - who really just wants to be left alone to be grumpy and sad and disfigured. ALONE. But Effie wants to dig on his land. And she won’t take no for an answer. She also talks A LOT.

8. A family for the widowed governess by Ann Lethbridge (Technically this is part of a series but you don’t need to read them in order and this is the best one. A widow who is being blackmailed accepts a governess post. She can’t tell her employer about the blackmail especially when she starts falling for him.)

9. The bedlam stacks by Natasha Pulley (I read watchmaker and didn’t like it but you might like it. This one also FEAUTRES A M/M ROMANCE. I know this list was super straight im sorry. Anyway this is about a botanist falling in love with a priest in the jungle.

10. The wilderness series by Sara Donati (Think outlander without the time travel and also not set in scotland. Basically Last of the Mohicans fanfiction about Hawkeye’s grown up son. An english woman moves to america when her father promises she can be a school teacher there. Little does she know he actually has plans to marry her off. Things get more complicated when she falls for Nathaniel Bonner, a white man raised native american and who’s daughter and extended family is Native American. Like outlander there’s romance, adventure, history. But unlike the outlander books the love interest is a decent guy (i say as if i don’t love the tv show)

STUFF THAT REALLY ISN’T ROMANCE AT ALL. BUT I SHIP A SHIP.

1. The Lacey Flint series by Sharon Bolton (Lacey Flint is a police officer who becomes involved in the hunt to catch a Jack the ripper copycat. There actually is a strong romantic element with the other lead police officer.)

2. The last hours duology by Minette Walters. A novel about the black death and a closed estate lead by a woman who’s trying to protect her people. There’s also a kind of murder mystery. But she also has a close relationship to one of the surfs that I got super invested in.

3. The Strike series by J.k Rowling (I know we don’t stan anymore but. This series about  PI and his assistant slowly growing closer? Becoming best friends and partners? Not acknowledging any feelings for each other?

I love your analysis, if you haven't already can you give your opinion on Maria's and Beatrice's relationship? (Sorry if my English isn't understandable, it isn't my first language).

i think there are two angles to their relationship. the first is maria's own extreme faith in beatrice as an almost godlike figure who will lift her from her cruel life and bring her to the infinitely more joyous golden land (i think the religious associations with the magic are on purpose).

i also think that the culprit(s) have been using this faith in beatrice on maria's part to turn her into an unbreaking believer of the witch narrative in order to make the crimes more compelling for the rest of the family. there's some evidence that maria and "beatrice" have spoken before the events of the family conference which i think indicates some kind of marinating with maria - you have a servant claiming to be beatrice somehow in a type of rehearsal of the rose garden conversation with the umbrella. if i was to give my gut feeling given what we've seen i think it's likely that before the family conference a lot of maria's belief was coming from stories told by shannon (perhaps under kumasawa's direction?).

so you have maria desperate to believe in anything other than bleak reality and someone who stands to offer her everything she wants in the story of a powerful yet merciful witch who rewards true believers with a kind of paradise. if you tap into this with maria through promises of playing together in the golden land then you're simultaneously bringing joy to an abused child and creating an incredibly useful asset for the murders. as a result maria has enough love and belief for beatrice that she is able to "see" her in a way that makes everything that much more real for everyone else.

the beatrice in maria's head is more of a concept so i don't think we can consider that as a true relationship, but i do wonder about the servant(s) that helped sell the stories to make beatrice "real" to maria. belief in the witch is a great source of joy for maria, but it is also a naked manipulation done to guarantee the slaughter of her family. you have to wonder how someone like shannon or kumasawa felt telling these stories knowing their ultimate purpose.

Christmas Cordonian style Knight Thunder Twist.

Christmas cordonian style with a Knight Thunder twist

  author's note   this story takes place a week after the arrest of Barthelemy Beaumont and those who were with him in the coup against the crown of cordonia.

 The Palace of Cordonia is a buzz with excitement as servants and people alike work together to decorate the capital city for the upcoming Christmas celebration.

Karyson and his Queen Reimeiko were observing as the decorations and preparations were happening.

“It is a Happy Time For Us my dear Reimeiko.   What a celebration the preparations have been going on for days.” Karyson gushed.  “ old man Beaumont and the rest of his conspirators are behind bars my aunt and uncle can finally rest in peace knowing that they're killers are incarcerated for the rest of their lives.   I am relieved as well.   Rhiannon and the twins are growing up free from Barthelemy's tyranny.   and peace is once again returned to our kingdom.”

 “oh yes.”  Queen Reimeiko agreed. “ we are finally able to live our lives and our children are free the grow up away from all the evils that were thrown at them.   all of our friends from all around the kingdom and Beyond have come to help decorate.   BJ and the trio were getting along beautifully and this is our first real Christmas together as a family.”

 before they knew what was happening,  a loud crash could be heard from the kitchen close to the ballroom.  Karyson and Reimeiko  exchanged fearful looks and took off in the direction of the crash.   they both get through this serving doors only Drake fell out on the floor with a bowl of cake mix on his head.

“ what happened?”  the king demanded attempting to hide the laughter behind his feigned anger.

 “It was an accident, honestly.” Maxwell Beaumont  quickly said.  “I was coming one way with a bowl of cake mix. He was coming the other with the apples and we collided. Nothing major we’ll fix it we’ll fix it.”

“Well you had better fix it.” the  King growled  in feigned anger.  “Racine will get both of your butts if you mess up her kitchen and you know how fiercely protective Racine is of her kitchen.” as the king and his queen turned away and walked out of the kitchen once out of earshot they finally busted up laughing. “ did you see the look on Maxwell's face  when he and Drake  thought they were in trouble?  The look of fear was priceless. “

As they exited the kitchen and returned to the Ballroom  and the decorating, Marco and Valerie from Lythikos  and Jiro and Camila from Applewood arrived with their families with more sweet treats and snacks for the celebration.   The Cordonian children  we're given permission to take the time to play with BJ and the trio.

“Thank you for inviting us to your Christmas celebrations your Majesty's.” Camilla announced.  “And we are glad that you were able to save your daughter from being taken over by that bad man.”

“ well the bad man will be no trouble for no body anymore.”  the queen replied. “ he is locked up for the rest of his life and will never harm another Soul ever again.   you know what I have got an idea.   what do you guys say you guys heard BJ & the trio up to the playroom and then I will come and tell y'all A Christmas Story tell you all about how it all began with me and my family.”

“ that would be awesome your highness.” Marco gushed. “ it would be great to hear all about your first Christmas and how things meant for you and yours.”

“ well okay if you will take BJ Rhiannon Ethan and  Gabriel do the playroom The King and I will be up in a few minutes with the Christmas book.”

 without another second to spare the cordonian children took the younger ones up to the playroom and waited for the queen to arrive with her story.   within about 10 minutes the king and queen arrived at the playroom all the children were sitting in a semicircle in front of the rocking chair waiting to hear the Queen's famous story.

“ truth of the matter be told.” Karyson replied. “I cannot wait to hear the story you have come up with my love.”

“ well this is a story that everybody will enjoy.” Reimeko said.  instead of sitting in the rocking chair she pushed it back and set down in the floor with the children and her husband and began her story.  “ this is the story of a Time long ago back before my parents back when my grandparents were still just children my grandfather told us the story years later and it's become a family favorite:  Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring not even a mouse the stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that st. Nicholas soon would be there the children were nestled all snug in their beds with visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads.”

 This part of the story is where the king picked it up. “ oh I remember this with mom and her kerchief and I in my cap we had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap.  When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter away to the window I flew like a flash tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.  The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow gave the luster of midday to objects below when what do my wondering eyes should appear but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer with a little old driver so Lively and quick I knew in that moment it must be Saint Nick More rapid than the Eagles his coursers they came and he whistled and shouted and called them by name now Dasher  now Dancer now Prancer and Vixen on Comet on Cupid on Donner and Blitzen to the top of the porch to the top of the wall now dash away, dash away dash away all as dry leaves up before the wild hurricane fly when they met with an obstacle mount to the sky so up to the Housetop the coursers they flew with the sleigh full of toys and Saint Nicholas II and then in a twinkling I heard on the roof the Prancing and pawing of each little hoof as I drew in my head and was turning around down the chimney st. Nicholas came with a bound.”

 The queen took up the story from then on.   but the story had brought in everyone else to hear the long and blustering Tale. “ he was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot, a bundle of toys he had flung on his back and look like a peddler just opening his pack his eyes have a twinkled his dimples how merry his cheeks were like roses his nose like a cherry his droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow the stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath he had a broad little face and a little round belly that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly he was chubby and plump a right Jolly Old elf and I laughed when I saw him in spite of myself a winking his eye and it twisted his head soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread he spoke not a word but it went straight to his work and feel it all the stockings then turn with a jerk and laying his finger aside of his nose and giving a nod up the chimney he rose he sprang to his sleigh his team gave a whistle and a way they are flew like that down of a thistle but I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight Merry Christmas to all and to all a good-night.”

 The children and everyone assembled sat there in awe as the queen finished the long historical story Amazed by the beauty and the imagery she weaved as she told the story.

“Tell us more your majesty.” Camilla gushed.  “is there more Christmas poems and stories you know that one was amazing especially the tale of the snow.”

“ there is much more there is one by Charles Dickens that was entitled The Christmas Carol but that is a much longer story to be told and right now we have not the time.” the queen replied. “ but the moral of the Christmas story is at least A Christmas Carol is a story if you like I will read to you all at bedtime but for now we have a celebration to get to and hopefully everything is in order.”

 Ethan, Rhiannon, and Gabriel, along with BJ approached Queen Thunderis  with curious eyes. “ was there more to the poem Aunt Rena?” BJ asked. “ it was a very short story but I'd like to know more.”

“ me too  mommy.” Rhiannon echoed. “more Christmas Story pease?”

“ alright here's one I can tell you since we do seem to have time before the big celebration.”  the queen replied.  “ when Jamie Randall and Shannon we're just nine maybe ten years old that was one Christmas that turned into a Christmas miracle.   The  Llewellyn's  had just moved in next door Mr. Llewellyn had joined Thunderstar Universal  and his children Tristan, Erin,  and Jordan had  just enrolled in the nearby Elementary School.   Mrs. Llewellyn was traveling the country with her family to meet up with her married family in time for the holidays.   Miss Rihanna drove a special delivery truck all over the country and was to an extent a female version of Santa Claus. but it wasn't just gifts for the children that she was hauling every year she was also doing everything to help families that didn't have everything they needed. “

“Was there a lot of families like that?”  Camilla asked.  “ I do not understand what did it mean that these families did not have everything they needed?” 

“The families I am referring to are the ones like well your Nobles and Royals call them,  commoners.”  the queen replied. “ because unlike the Nobles and Royals The parents of these families had to work for a living. not everybody born is born into it a family where all they have to do is bark orders at others and get what they want the commoners had to work for everything they had but because of a lot of the Nobles and Royals of the history there were a lot of things that they were unable to afford.  Anyway, Mrs. Rhiannon owned her own Trucking line and was an independent truck driver. Well  this particular holiday season she was called on by a very special family she had grown up around over the years. they asked her to drive what they call the Christmas truck because what  was in the trailer of that special truck what's going to save this one town utter destruction.   well the week before Christmas Mrs. Rhiannon packed it up And headed out for the town of Lincoln Falls which was apparently somewhere in Alaska. they drove for the longest time she and her brother but always called back to her family in order to keep them up-to-date as to where she was she dropped off her load and was on her way back first few days before Christmas Eve when she was supposed to call she did not.   the truck had been found jackknifed into a snowbank on her way back to her family but there was no sign of her or her brother come to find out she and her brother had been rescued by a stranger but this was no ordinary stranger at least I did not think so according to Rhiannon  The Stranger had seen what it happened the snow so hard to see through Rihanna's lost control of the truck and hit the snowbank almost burying the big truck in the snow. The Stranger welcome them back to his home where they could get warm and wait out the blizzard that it hit for what seemed like several days the blizzard blew and blew and blew and by the time it finally stopped Rescuers had found the truck and we're working diligently to dig it out  Rhiannon and her brother had wakened from the sound of someone digging around the in the snow around the truck they were thankful that they had been spared. when they told the dispatcher about what happened and who had helped them they did not at first believe what she said come to find out the stranger name was Liam Alexander that is the name he gave us Rhiannon declared but that is impossible the dispatcher replied Liam Alexander died back in 1956 due to snow storm this just as this one was it couldn't have been him come to find out Rihanna looked in the direction they had gone towards  Liam's house but all she saw for miles and miles with nothing but snow but he was here she protested he saved us we were we were in his house. Liam Alexander was quite the angel back in the day he was always doing everything humanly possible to help all the families who were unable to have anything extra for like Christmas and whatever else even those who were struggling financially and otherwise he would always do what he could to help the night he died he was on the same kind of run you heard the song Angels Among Us by Alabama the dispatch arrest well yeah of course who hasn't Rihanna declared that song tells a story quite literally the dispatcher said I believe there are Angels Among Us sent down to us from somewhere up above They come to you and me In our darkest hours to show us how to live pto teach us how to give and to guide us with the light of love. the dispatcher took Rhiannon to the cemetery and showed her Liam's tombstone with that Epitaph written in the Stone.   Liam James Alexander born March 25th 1936 died December 16th 1956 he was an angel Among Us and he will always be remembered and loved He was only 20 years old the dispatcher said but in his short  years of life he gave more of himself did many others ever thought about. Rhiannon continued home that night and when she finally walked in her door Christmas morning her husband sons and daughter as well as their new neighbors were there to greet her relieved that she made it home safely the last thing she said before she went to bed herself if it was not for Liam Alexander I would not be here today no matter what happens my children never take strangers for granted because when you least expect it they could very well be angels in disguise.

“ it was amazing.” Camila gushed. “ is Miss Rhiannon still alive? I would have loved to have been able to have met her.”

“ well actually you already have.”  Queen Seidre  replied. “ she was me in my younger years. and it was the last run I made before I returned to my husband and my children and my reign as Queen of Thaddea.”

“ all right you guys that's enough stories for now.”  Maxwell called. “ the ballroom the snacks and everything is ready time to get this party on and Christmas Jamboree kicking into high gear let's go you guys come on what do you want stories later.   it is time for presents let's go let's go.”

 as everyone began to move out of the playroom and head back to the ballroom the king embraced his Queen before she left.” I will have to admit that this is the first of the best Christmases ever put together my love.”  he replied. “ I look forward to a whole lifetime of more to come to watching our children grow up happy and healthy to being together and finally living in peace here so much I want to do.   you have a very thoughtful look on your face my queen is there something on your mind?”

“ I got some test results back from dr. Ramirez the other day.”  the queen announced. “ I did not want to say anything and get your hopes up until I knew for sure but now that I do…”

“ oh my goodness Queen Reimeiko what is it?” King Karyson asked. “ please do not leave me on tenterhooks what is going on?”

“ it seems that Rhiannon and the twins are going to be having a sibling or two soon.” Reimeiko replied.

“ wait, what? seriously baby?” Karyson asked. “ this is beyond any shadow of a doubt the best news all day and one of the best Christmas gifts ever.   oh now we had to make this big announcement and now.”

“ we will in due time but for now let us just enjoy the peace and quiet of the celebration and not worry about telling everybody else any more than what we already have.”  the queen replied. “ I definitely do not want a repeat every Rhiannon and the twins first year”

“ oh good point my love.”  King replied. “ now come on we have a celebration to enjoy.”

 the Cordonian King and his Queen return to join the others in the big Christmas celebration relieved to have made it through their first two years despite all the shortcomings trials and tribulations they have had to face from the beginning.  as she watched her husband her family and her friends celebrate the Christmas holidays, Reimeiko  knew  that no matter what the future held, they would always face everything together as a family as a unit as a very strong compassionate loving and caring Kingdom.

I draw it myself, and I don’t really have style preferences for fanart; I’m interested in however you interpret my request in your own style!

- If one of my fic prompts or my likes below suggests something (non-explicit) you want to draw (whether one scene or sequential), I’d love to see that. I always like to see characters doing things they’re good at or looking formidable or happy. And for shippy art, I am always here for handholding, hand kisses, regular kisses, cuddling, and/or other romantic moments in contexts that make sense for the characters.

- Dressing the characters up or down is also fun. Fancy clothing or armor, things they might wear that we don’t see in canon, or illustrating what they do wear in canon if it’s a book. Partial undressing and dishevelment. Different historical AU looks (as an exception to my setting AUs DNW).
