Sega has released a new trailer and screenshots for Sakura Wars introducing combat.
Here is an overview of combat in Sakura Wars, via Sega:
When you take the reins as Seijuro Kamiyama in Sakura Wars your challenges aren’t only with your own Imperial Combat Revue, but also with every other combat revue in the world. There’s a big battle looming.
Almost immediately after being appointed captain of the Flower Division, your boss, Sumire Kanzaki, announces Tokyo’s sworn protectors are at risk of being disbanded. You and your squad have one chance to prove yourselves and save the legacy of the Flower Division—by winning the Combat Revue World Games.
The Games are an intense, dynamic tournament where combat revues from around the world compete in elaborate stage performances and battle with their giant mecha. They were established with the hope it would foster a spirit of unity between the different revues while also enhancing their public profile, allowing these heroes to take the spotlight and display their combat prowess to the populace.
The Flower Division can expect to face particularly fierce opposition from the combat revues of Shanghai, London, and Berlin. The rules are simple, though the path forward is anything but:
Every match is a three-on-three team battle spread across three rounds.
You’ll select two squad members who will fight alongside you.
Each team scores points by defeating targets located around the tournament arena.
These points contribute to a tug-of-war-like gauge. Win by overpowering your opponent in that gauge or by scoring the most points overall at the end of the match.
Sakura Wars launched for PlayStation 4 in December 2019 in Japan, and is due out on April 28 in the Americas and Europe. A demo is available now in Japan. Read more about the game here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

Got to the combat section, and gave up on the game.
Not because it was unplayable. It’s at worst mediocre, but still fun to play.
No, stopped playing after the first combat, as the entire thing was about giving up. The first section is a VERY heavy handed tutorial, continuing the new tradition of VERY heavy handed tutorials. I swear gamejournos are giving good reviews to games because of how heavy handed the tutorials are. Like, seriously, leave me along for a 10 seconds to try buttons and I’ll figure this out.
Anyways, first section, beat with full health, as enemies drop health.
Second second, have your first real mediocre excuse for a boss, which I beat with 98% health.
The first section Sakura fights by herself, while the other two are off to the side, dealing with other enemies.
Then an enemy turns off two of the mecha...
*head desk*
Depowering is not interesting, and violates any semblance of a cohesive structure to the world.
So, her friends get depowered, and their magic / steam powered armour gets turned off, and what does the protagonist who’s mission control do? Tell her to abandon her friends and run away. Because, she doesn’t need to fight.
No, I’m pretty sure she needs to fight. Considering she’s the only one with working powered armour right now.
So, she fights through the comically easy level. The only reason I took damage at all, is for whatever reason, they separated their Dodge and Dash button, and enemies have way too long of a telegraph before their attacks. Like two seconds. It’s long enough to get bored.
So, beat the area with 98% HP, and then she gets jumped by one of the weakest enemies, and this is enough to instantly take her out, completely. But, she wants to fight, and then the Shanghai Combat Revue shows up to save her. Except that the girl trusts she’s fighting for the right reasons, because she wants to fight when all hope is lost. Then, Yang Xiaolong, (no, not that one), beats the shit out of her, because Sakura refused their invitation to join their Combat Revue.
Oh, right, and the girl from the Shanghai Combat Revue thinks I’m a pervert, because when I was exploring the base I found a vacant bath, and no one thought to put up a sign saying Womens. One of the dialogue options also has you try to grab one of the girl’s boobs, without any way of knowing that’s what the dialogue would do. Because... hilarity?..
So, they turn off your allies to show how wonderful it is that Sakura can keep fighting after all of the hopeless odds.
Then you fight the second, incredibly easy section with an incredibly easy boss, and you get 30 minutes of the characters screaming about how brave she is. During combat, whenever they have a character say anything, they stop the action, while having the character’s camera feed appear in the top right. Not realizing tonnes of games will do that without taking control away from you. At least do the Arkham thing and let the character walk slowly, or something. It’s like they’ve never played a single immersive game.
I’ve also learned that every single dialogue choice is entirely about the dating-sim aspect. Some of them also have an analogue control for you to decide how strongly you want to say it. You can then agree with a character, only to completely contradict yourself, because the game needs you to piss Sakura off, so you can console her.
Again, it’s incredibly vexing, and the game focuses almost entirely on Sakura, when the majority of the gameplay is that of a dating sim.
Considering how horribly cringe inducing the post-combat cinematic is, they could have eliminated it, and nearly every - single - other cinematic, and spent a bit more time on the combat engine, or maybe spend 5 minutes sketching out a story? It’s like, the game OBVIOUSLY did not try to be the leader of the pack graphics wise, so they could focus more on personality.
If you do want to play it, dialogue for the first three girls is:
Sakura: Faith
Hatsuho: Heroes don’t need plans.
Claris(sa): Prudence
Sakura Wars
I tried watching the anime when I was younger, but the problem with the anime is it wasn’t properly balanced. The anime was based off the original game fo the Sega Saturn, which is largely a dating sim. Turning it into an anime didn’t really work, at least not as indecisively as they did it. Since then I’ve been largely ignorant to Sakura Wars until I bought the recent game.
Now, being Sakura Wars it has to have a Sakura front and centre. Apparently, as a girl, this Sakura was saved by the original Sakura, and dreamed of growing up to be exactly like it.
Fancy that.
She plays the childhood love interest, which has absolutely no interest as a love interest. It’s based off a presumed emotional connection, instead of trying to make the audience feel an emotional connection. It’s basically the laziest device used by people who cannot fathom actual romance.
Now, as for Sakura, she is actually far more interesting than my rant against childhood love interests should seem. She is practically oozing personality, which is something the game does a fantastic job of. Despite the limited graphics, the characters show incredible personality from the first moment you see them. Get this, even the male protagonist has a personality, hopes, dreams, history They do a much better job than most of the games that put all of their efforts in better graphics to show off their incredibly flat characters. Their stances and minute facial expressions are one of the reasons I bought the game in the first place.
The game introduces you slowly to the world. First you can walk around, but oh no, it’s way too soon for us to trust you with the camera yet. They then give you a tutorial on the camera once they finally deign to let you use it. You then get a (supposed steam powered), tablet computer that acts as your minimap and much of your typically triangle-button menu in an RPG. Your character even pulls the Teletron out of his pocket when you use it. It’s completely unnessary, but also charming.
Now, considering this is a part RPG / part dating sim, I absolutely loathe the fact that they try to get you to flirt with Sakura before even introducing the other characters. The dialogue is not so much the problem, but the fact that she ticks every single box for default love interest. Hell, with Mass Effect, they tried to make Virmire Survivor the default love interest, and the fandom said fuck that, give me blue babies, (which we never got, but that’s another story). But, as I said, she is far more interesting, and has far more personality than any other yamato nadeisco childhood friend default love interest I’ve ever seen. Hell, if we could undo the last 40 years of the yamato nadeisco childhood friend default love interest, I would love to have her be the one I pick.
Now, the world has you using steam + magic powered super robots to fight demons, but, the problem is that you are a “Combat Revue”. You are based out of a theatre, which is both insanely stupid and clever at the same time. It allows you to disguise your facilities and have everyone still call you captain without being overly suspicious. But, you might wonder, since acting and combat are such very different things, won’t it be hard to find people who can do both?
Yes.
The three actresses you start with are terrible actresses. Even worse, you are apparently self-funded. The armour you have won’t work without maintenance, and you cannot afford to do so until your theatre makes money.
I’ve been playing this game for a couple of hours, and finally got to see the armours, only to then be told they cannot work as is.
And we cannot get anymore, meaning you don’t have an armour.
A a worldwide festival is is a week, where all of the world’s Combat Revues compete in combat and acting, (begging the question of how exactly are we keeping the combat part of our Combat Revues a secret, when we call it the World Combat Revue Competition).
I was hoping to include the combat mechanics in the review, but apparently not.

Sakura Wars Staff, Anime Adaptation Ending Tease Sequel
June 22, 2020 9:56 PM EST
Sakura Wars Producer Tetsu Katano, Composer Kohei Tanaka, and the Shin Sakura Taisen The Animation ending all hinted we might get more Shin Sakura Taisen.
Sega held the 14th Sakura Wars stream on June 19. The stream featured as usual: MC Mami Yamashita, Seijuro Kamiyama’s seiyuu Yohei Azakami, and Producer Tetsu Katano. Present as guests were Kenji Akabane, who is the seiyuu of Kaminsky Valery in Shin Sakura Taisen The Animation, and Sakura Taisen composer Kohei Tanaka.
The stream mainly focused on Shin Sakura Taisen The Animation, whose final episode aired the same day. One interesting point are the words shared by everyone as the stream ended.
Kohei Tanaka said he wants to keep making Sakura Taisen songs forever, and he’s sad the anime ended so fast. He actually pointed out how at the first meetings for the anime’s production, he asked if they could make it into a 2 cour anime (24-26 episodes) but that wasn’t possible for various reasons. Kohei Tanaka hopes there will be more Sakura Taisen coming soon, and said there might be, seeing the anime’s ending. This turned out true, as the anime’s final episode, which aired right after the stream, teased more to come with a stinger-like ending.
youtube
However, the biggest hint toward a sequel is by far Producer Tetsu Katano’s words as the stream ended. As linked at the 1:39:32 mark above, he said:
Tetsu Katano: “We went through the answers from the survey we sent players. Nearly every player said in the survey that if there’s a sequel, they’ll buy it. That’s an incredible stimulus for us. Sakura (Amamiya) always says she’ll never ever give up, and we always feel the same way… That’s all I can say.”
Tetsu Katano also added that they’ll keep asking Kohei Tanaka for Sakura Wars songs in the future.
It’s also important to note that on April 16, 2020, Sega registered trademarks for:
The trademarks were made public on May 12, 2020, but time didn’t permit me to write about it back then. Except for B.L.A.C.K., these are all listed for video games-related categories. Nothing is certain as there’s the possibility these trademarks will never be used. It does mean Sega is definitely thinking about more Sakura Wars games though. Collabs for the game and now the anime haven’t stopped and show no sign of stopping either. The same can be said when it comes to new goods.
Moreover, Sakura Wars streams have an history of the staff purposefully acting as if they said something they shouldn’t on stream, in order to tease things. On the very first stream, they acted as if they forgot to talk about “Shangai”, teasing the reveal of the Shanghai Combat Revue on the next stream. The following stream, Producer Katano acted a lapsus, saying “London” instead of “Dondon” (more and more in Japanese) teasing the London Combat Revue.
Live Japanese TV shows, streams, seiyuu radio shows and the like are all meticulously scripted, but they acted those “slip-ups” so well I was fooled. Until they outright said one stream they couldn’t find a good joke for Berlin and outright said the next stream would reveal the Berlin Combat Revue. Anyway, what I mean to say is Tetsu Katano definitely didn’t say these teasing words coincidentally.
Sega’s Toshihiro Nagoshi previously spoke on Sakura Wars‘ sales and mentioned Sega will make more full voice games in the future. It’s highly likely a tentative Shin Sakura Taisen 2 will be fully voiced.

So, here's Qi Dandan smoking after I finished watching a few Ruan Lingyu movies. She doesn't actually like smoking but she does it anyway, you know how it is.
Apparently, my roommate's mum called today saying "wow Aleksis sure has been drawing some chicks on IG".
God, I've been marked. I'm "the chick drawer" now.

I've forgotten this in my folders oops I like drawing the Shanghai Combat Revue uniform.
btw their team name is specifically 山河班* or Mountain (and) River Company. Hence their names are puns for rivers & mountains**
* The full name is 山河武艺班 (Mountain (and) River Martial Company), or 舞艺班 (Dance Company) to the wider public. I like the pun.
** Except for Qi Dandan, but that's 'cause hers is an stage alias. Her real name is 戚淮卿
