Okay! So, I’ve only just realised that I never did an intro post! So here it is! My name is Olivia but basically everyone calls me Liv! I’m 17 (18 this Monday! 😱) and am from Manchester, in the UK 🇬🇧! 💙🐬I first got interested in dolphins in around 2014 after swimming with dolphins at Zoomarine Portugal. After that I ended up going to SeaWorld in 2015 and could tell that something was wrong- the staff didn’t really know anything about the animals! After not getting any questions answered, I ended up researching dolphins and then came across @dolphin_project and @seashepherduk 💙💙Since then, I’ve tried to help spread the awareness about Taiji and ending the dolphin captivity industry! I can’t express how guilty I feel for swimming with dolphins but am really trying to help end dolphin captivity! I have shared as many posts as possible on social media and have been able to stop family and friends from going to visit Dolphin shows! As I’m turning 18 soon, I am hoping to do some volunteering with either #dolphinproject or #seashepherd in the near future! 💙💙🐬💙 As my passion for the ocean grew 🌊, I became more and more interested in ocean pollution! I love helping with beach cleans with @mcs_uk 🏖 and have been trying to cut down my single use plastic! 👩🏼‍🎓I’m planning on going to university next year to study Marine Biology with Oceanography! 👩🏼‍🎓🎼 I also play the flute and did my grade 7 last summer!🌞 🎼I play in my colleges orchestra and even visited Germany with them over the summer! I have my PADI Open Water and Dry Suit qualifications and love to dive! 🌊I’ve got the AMAZING opportunity to visiting Indonesia with @operation_wallacea next summer and will be diving in the Coral Triangle! Slavery Is An Industry Still

During the decade my husband spent in Japan, he made friendships with a handful of other expats--natch. One of them is here this weekend on business and transiently moving on; gleefully, they made contact and are together tonight.

Of all the hotels he could have chosen, the one he did is the one that is around the corner from our residence. The one we use as a getaway, semi-staycation station. Clean, fairly creative in its architecture, the staff tries, and the pool and the hot tub are super clean and curated by this individual who will chat you up when he makes his rounds. 

We like swimming here. Many times when I swim with my family, I imagine someone coming over and summarily taking my children from me and putting them to work as slaves for the rest of their lives and chopping me up for food which will likely be served but not eaten. Sounds crazy right?

It is. This is what happens to families of dolphins on the reg. Did you know they can recognize themselves in a mirror? Did you know that they travel in families a.k.a. pods? 

Any dolphin you see outside of the ocean, has been ripped from its family in the nightmarish way I just described. Only worse. Much, much, much worse. You swim with a dolphin, you contribute to this. You go to a show, you support this. 

Do you really think they do these behaviors because they like it? Do you think they are super excited to entertain you? Do you wonder what happens before and after the show? 

The weirdest part is that Taiji, Japan is the epicenter of much of this. How do I tell my husband and my husband’s friend about this? I did tell my husband and he was clear in that this particular island does not represent Japan. Ok, so like slaughterhouses here for factory farms do not represent me?

It is actually all about me and it is all about you. Cue Snap’s song, “I have the power!”

First red cove in Taiji this year 💔 it disgusts me how the ‘fishermen’ can call what they are doing ‘tradition’. Let’s all continue to share these images and educate others.
