The Red Flag Club is in the trenches with more questions than answers when Zuko admits to putting on the Ghostface mask, & claims Azula helped him slaughter their friends & family while locked in a trance. What is the truth? Just how many people have been masquerading as Ghostface & slicing & dicing the people of Lakewood? Angry, confused & unsure of what to believe Katara makes a deadly choice about who to trust as the seconds tick down & the bloody finale of this murder mystery approaches.

The most prominent ships in this fic are definitely Azula/Katara & Azula/Zuko - but also relevant are Jet/Katara, Sokka/Yue, Sokka/Suki, Jet/Ty Lee, Zuko/Mai & Jet/Yue. This is a horror/murder mystery/tragedy/slasher whodunit set in the Scream universe. The final chapter will be posted next week. No one is safe, & everyone is a suspect. Read at your own risk!

research & development is ongoing

since using jukebox for sampling material on albedo, i've been increasingly interested in ethically using ai as a tool to incorporate more into my own artwork. recently i've been experimenting with "commoncanvas", a stable diffusion model trained entirely on works in the creative commons. though i do not believe legality and ethics are equivalent, this provides me peace of mind that all of the training data was used consensually through the terms of the creative commons license. here's the paper on it for those who are curious! shoutout to @reachartwork for the inspiration & her informative posts about her process!

part 1: overview

i usually post finished works, so today i want to go more in depth & document the process of experimentation with a new medium. this is going to be a long and image-heavy post, most of it will be under the cut & i'll do my best to keep all the image descriptions concise.

for a point of reference, here is a digital collage i made a few weeks ago for the album i just released (shameless self promo), using photos from wikimedia commons and a render of a 3d model i made in blender:

and here are two images i made with the help of common canvas (though i did a lot of editing and post-processing, more on that process in a future post):

more about my process & findings under the cut, so this post doesn't get too long:

quick note for my setup: i am running this model locally on my own machine (rtx 3060, ubuntu 23.10), using the automatic1111 web ui. if you are on the same version of ubuntu as i am, note that you will probably have to build python 3.10.6 yourself (and be sure to use 'make altinstall' instead of 'make install' and change the line in the webui to use 'python3.10' instead of 'python3'. just mentioning this here because nobody else i could find had this exact problem and i had to figure it out myself)

part 2: initial exploration

all the images i'll be showing here are the raw outputs of the prompts given, with no retouching/regenerating/etc.

so: commoncanvas has 2 different types of models, the "C" and "NC" models, trained on their database of works under the CC Commercial and Non-Commercial licenses, respectively (i think the NC dataset also includes the commercial license works, but i may be wrong). the NC model is larger, but both have their unique strengths:

they both take the same amount of time to generate (17 seconds for four 512x512 images on my 3060). if you're really looking for that early ai jank, go for the commercial model. one thing i really like about commoncanvas is that it's really good at reproducing the styles of photography i find most artistically compelling: photos taken by scientists and amateurs. (the following images will be described in the captions to avoid redundancy):

"grainy deep-sea rover photo of an octopus", "NC" model. note the motion blur on the marine snow, greenish lighting and harsh shadows here, like you see in photos taken by those rover submarines that scientists use to take photos of deep sea creatures (and less like ocean photography done for purely artistic reasons, which usually has better lighting and looks cleaner). the anatomy sucks, but the lighting and environment is perfect.

"beige computer on messy desk", "NC" model. the reflection of the flash on the screen, the reddish-brown wood, and the awkward angle and framing are all reminiscent of a photo taken by a forum user with a cheap digital camera in 2007.

so the noncommercial model is great for vernacular and scientific photography. what's the commercial model good for?

"blue dragon sitting on a stone by a river", "C" model. it's good for bad CGI dragons. whenever i request dragons of the commercial model, i either get things that look like photographs of toys/statues, or i get gamecube type CGI, and i love it.

here are two little green freaks i got while trying to refine a prompt to generate my fursona. (i never succeeded, and i forget the exact prompt i used). these look like spore creations and the background looks like a bryce render. i really don't know why there's so much bad cgi in the datasets and why the model loves going for cgi specifically for dragons, but it got me thinking...

i love the dreamlike video game environments and strange CGI characters it produces-- it hits that specific era of video games that i grew up with super well.

part 3: use cases

i'm interested in using this technology more, not as a replacement for my digital collage art, but along with it as just another tool in my toolbox. and of course...

... this isn't out of lack of skill to imagine or draw scifi/fantasy landscapes.

the blue and red blanket jayce wraps around viktor is symbolic of the humanity hes still holding onto... and also their love for each other

he keeps it throughout his entire season arc, and through his "glorious evolution" process you see it starts to cover less and less of him the further he strays:

the first time we see it, its completely draped over almost his entire body, only barely showing his hands, feet and head

the next time we see him, his head is covered, but more of his feet and arms are showing through

he loses the hood being in his lil cult after a while, the way the rest of it is pinned up is revealing more of his body; his legs and entire arms, and the sides of his torso are showing as well

when jayce finds him, its now only covering half of his body, but still holding on even after being blasted through the chest with a kamehameha

with the Herald form, now the furthest thing we see from the viktor we know, the blanket only having a tattered idea of it wrapped around him, just covering his shoulders. its almost completely gone though, the blanket that once covered his whole body is basically just two strands of fabric now:

but it still manages to incorporate itself into his astral form, because hes not completely gone yet, viktor is still in there. he still had a shred of humanity left to him.

and THATS why and how jayce is able to bring him back to himself, with a hug no less, its still there, weak but not completely gone yet. and notice how once the image of the Herald is cracked, viktor's form is still made up of blues and reds, even now, its still incorporated in a way

the mask metphorically and literally sheilding viktor from himself, but finally hes able to slip through once the mask cracks, and we see the real viktor behind the Herald. and only here jayce is able to show viktor his mistakes and make him realize the things he's done. likely this wouldnt be possible had viktor been completely gone.

and in the end, what colors are they bathed in together?

blue and red

u can also think of it as- his most ideal body and form is with the goal of inhumanity, thus the more he loses of what actually makes him human directly influences what of his body he percieves to be perfect and therefore proud to show to the world

the blanket being the figurative idea of humanity and its literal idea of how much outwordly shown in his physical design:

him covering himself up near the beginning (flawed in his eyes) the blanket huge

and almost completely showing off and revealing his form in the end (perfect and ideal) the blanket now a mere ghost of what it once was, only a small part of him covered by it

Yooooooooo, I’ve finally finished queuing up Round 2… well, kind of.

It’s taken me all month to queue up Arthropoda and Chordata. Mollusca and Round 2.5 (the redemption round for Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Tardigrada, and Ctenophora) have yet to receive their captions, which takes a lot more time than you’d think.

So, on November 1st, we will start with Arthropoda, and instead of having polls every 12 hours, they will be every 24 hours. Probably at 8am USA Eastern Standard Time. This should give me enough time to get the captions for Mollusca and the rest finished, though I will likely need a short break in between. After which, I may go back to having polls every 12 hours. We’ll see how things go. 🙃

As a side note and shameless self-promo, I’m also gearing up for this year’s Archovember. That is also taking up a considerable chunk of my free time. Archovember is an annual paleoart drawing challenge that I’ve been hosting every November since 2019. It focuses on dinosaurs, pterosaurs, pseudosuchians, and other archosauromorphs, giving less popular or lesser known species a chance to shine and get drawn. Paleoartists from beginners to professionals have joined in the past, and even if you don’t draw along it’s also fun to just learn about a new prehistoric reptile every day! It’s usually not that big on Tumblr tbh (oddly enough) but gets a lot of traction on Instagram. You can check it out on my paleo account here on Tumblr @saritapaleo, or on Instagram under the same username (you’re also likely to see a lot more people participating on Instagram.)

Anyway, shameless self promo aside, this is also a heads up that my attention will be divided between these two events in November, and I’m likely to prioritize Archovember. 🫠 I’ll still be here to answer asks and share propaganda, but everything will be a little more automated and I might not be as quick to respond!

found out about this alternative to glaze/nightshade...

basically how it works is:

it adds a watermark (invisible to the human eye) to your art that pretty much camouflages it among the ai's bullshit

robots may ignore your art as they scrape the internet for images

even if your art does get scraped, ai image generators may double-check for watermarked images and exclude them from final training data

(all of this was paraphrased from the actual website)

so yea it definitely works differently (and it seems a bit less secure) but if glaze or nightshade wont work for you (they dont work for me) this is probably one of the best alternatives out there

i tried it on this panel i made for a "with lyrics" for a mother's love (shameless promo ooooo) that i never posted, and honest to god it looks near identical outside of some color changes and slight artifacts but you'd have to look REALLY closely to notice
