Her Beast

The air in Pandaemonium crackled, not with magic, but with the raw, untamed energy of a prisoner desperate for release. Marixa knelt amidst the shattered remnants of ancient mechanisms, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The last fight had been brutal, a chaotic dance of claws and teeth against her dwindling resources. She clutched her grimoire, the polished leather slick with sweat, and stared down at the inky abyss that pulsed beneath the platform she stood on. This was it. This was the place.

For weeks, Marixa had been delving deeper into the depths of Pandaemonium, driven by a compulsion she barely understood. She felt it now, humming in her bones – the resonance, the connection. She had been drawn here, to this desolate corner where the veil between worlds seemed thin. This was where her beast slumbered.

She closed her eyes, focusing on the churning void within, a space she had always known existed but had never dared to explore. It was a hungry darkness, a primordial echo of a beast she could only sense in her dreams. Today, she would wake it.

Taking a deep breath, Marixa began the incantation, the words scratching at her throat like shards of glass. They weren't the polished, elegant phrases of a classic summoner. Instead, they were raw, primal, a language born from the deepest recesses of her soul. Her voice vibrated with an energy that was both terrifying and thrilling.

The ground beneath her feet began to tremble. Cracks spiderwebbed across the stone, and the air thickened, heavy with the scent of ozone and something else… something wild. Marixa could feel it now, a tangible presence clawing its way from her being. This wasn’t just a summon, this was a… birth.

The abyss below erupted. Black smoke billowed upwards, coalescing into a form that sent shivers down Marixa’s spine. It was colossal, a creature woven from shadows and edged with flickering embers.

It wasn’t what she expected. It wasn’t a sleek, obedient familiar. It was a chaotic symphony of jagged edges and swirling darkness, a mirror reflecting the untamed aspects of her own soul. The smoke faded away to reveal something seen only in nightmares. A skull of a hound, cracks showing years of fighting without words. Its limbs ended in wickedly sharp claws that could tear through steel, coated already with the dark color of old blood. It moved with a fluid, predatory grace, despite its enormous size.

Marixa found herself taking a step back, half-fearful, half-fascinated. It tilted it's head, a low growl rumbling in its chest, a sound that seemed to vibrate the very air around them. It wasn't threatening, not yet. It was a question, a recognition.

"Voss?" she whispered, her voice barely audible above the roar that still echoed in her ears.

The shadow beast shifted, its blazing eyes narrowing slightly. It lowered its massive head, sniffing the air as if trying to decipher the scent of this strange, small creature who had dared to call it forth. It tested the link, the tether, newly formed between them. Marixa felt the connection, a raw surge of power coursing through her, a dizzying blend of fear and exhilaration.

It wasn't responding to her commands, but acknowledging her, its creator. This wasn’t a tool to be wielded. This was a creature, a being. And it, no he, was a part of her now.

Marixa took a shaky breath. She had summoned him, and now she had to learn to live with him. She reached out a hand, hesitantly, towards the hulking shadow form. Voss dipped his head slightly, allowing her touch. Her fingers brushed against his rough, leather feeling arm. It was cold, but there was a pulse of warmth just beneath the surface.

She had unleashed something powerful, something dangerous, something… magnificent. The depths of Pandaemonium held many more secrets. Marixa knew, with a certainty that settled deep in her bones, that with Voss by her side, she was ready to embrace the darkness, and perhaps, find her own light within it. Her journey had just begun.

For those wondering what relevance John Barrowman has to my comic book, Shadow-Wolf is John, and I asked John (pictured!) if he was okay with me using him as a main character in my comic, and he said Yes! He can’t endorse it, but he is okay with me doing it because as he says it’s my artistic interpretation of him. It only took me since 2016 to finally ask him in person! For some reason it never occurred to me to ask him in prior meets even though I did try to reach out via social media and emails. Anyway, I’m SOOOOOO freaking excited and happy and now can really move forward with the comic and story…

Name: Technical Support, but prefers to go by Techie

Bio: The younger sister of Holy Nightmare's Customer Service. Unlike her polite and smooth-talking brother, she can be rather rude and abrasive. She hates dealing with customers and blames them for breaking things. She tends to slack at her job and prefers doing her own tinkering and coding on the side.

She likes to tease her brother and cause problems for him. Really she likes to cause problems for anyone if it seems fun, but if you can appreciate a bit of chaos she's easy to get along with.

Background: She and CS are actually Nightmare's "children", and not just regular demon beasts he created. Why and how they were born is a mystery to most, including themselves, but Dr. Yeva was involved.

Abilities: She has the power to enter people's dreams, but not change them. She can give the dreamer the ability to lucid dream.

Likes: Video games, cute things, sweets, parties

Dislikes: Working, following rules, clowns

Other refs: (they're a bit older but still good. Mostly only her glasses design has changed)

(So there are technically two versions of this character. The other one belongs in the 'verse created by ShadowWolf many years ago, but they seem to have moved on to greener fandoms so I made a different thing for myself. Her origins are a bit different there and she goes by Rin)
