Sorry I haven’t been posting Shadows House as much recently. I’ve been devoting my time into a free-for-all Discord server where I made a Shadows House channel. I am the only one to talk in that channel, but I persist.

Drawing From Anime Reference: 1 Year

This is my art I did one year ago of Emilyko from Shadows House. It was the first art I did to start my art journey. It's terrible, I didn't know what I was doing, I was depressed and hated my art. I hated how bad I was compared to other people. Of course I knew it took years but I felt that I would never get good since I have never been creative before. I had so many negative emotions I didn't want to continue. But soon I started trying to do inktober in my own way but drawing sketches of characters. I saw some progress in that and I was happy. But I got a job and I didn't have much time to draw anymore. I got depressed again and barely drew. Then this year I started drawing for the Hogwarts Legacy fandom which was what started this whole thing.

Now, a year later I've barely drawn at all but I decided to redraw Emilyko from the same reference. The difference is absolutely astounding. I still don't know what the hell I'm doing and only imitated the reference, but its already so much better than before. I've learned to color pick and attempt shading. I've gotten better at imitation, though sometimes its a hit or miss.

shadows house is such a fantastic series & i wholeheartedly recommend it... the story delves into super dark horror elements but doesn't present itself as a story with no hope. hope must be found and then tenaciously gripped with all one's heart, much like pandora's box. it tickles the victorian gothic part of my brain forever imprinted on me since i was 14 haha...

in the first draft i had marionette strings hanging above the characters (kinda reminds me of Erased.. since I just finished rewatching that ahaha...) & shadow puppet hands on the sides, almost as if gripping each character. i decided against it in the end, to let the characters shine in the spotlight (literally).

i also wanted a more active or lively pose, but kept in line with the stiff victorian portrait style, caused by long camera exposure times. i'm not sure if that worked out better bc i'm unsure if this drawing is interesting to people wahahaha.

initially i also wanted more of a dollhouse theme, but each draft got more and more muddy, so i decided to save it for another day (i'm around ch 90 in the manga, so probably a good call to save a more complex idea until i'm all caught up)

^ quick 5 min style test i posted recently! in that post i stated that i wanted to streamline and simplify my art style more, especially after the recent bunch of illustrations i did in the past winter that took way too long to complete, at the sake of my health.

im continually looking for areas to simplify more in my art, but one of the areas i will NOT skimp on is depicting fabric!!!!!

what also helped was working on my sense of structure in my spare time, so that i could be better at depicting form without relying so much on shading to show 3d forms. i love colouring, but i need to be working smarter, not harder from now on. using 100000 shades and highlights is just not feasible anymore wahaha.

in this drawing i loosened up with the bg and kept it rough, inspired by the wonderful xeroxed bgs of 101 dalmatians, and only implied details, rather than actually rendering all of them.

the tldr is that i draw too slowly i just would like to be able to make more drawings more often!!

here's the finished version! i'm really proud of how it turned out, both the modern au designs and the coloring of the clothes 🖤 i tried my best to distinguish between what are supposed to be different types of fabric, hope i succeeded

Tulips, the return and the romance

Wow, looks like Somato just decided to throw in every type of tulip into one vase and be happy. Well, somehow they still are relevant to the scene and the characters in question.

Red tulips are associated with a Persian love legend. In the legend, Farhad loved Shirin, but he was never able to confess his love to her. When he heard news of Shirin’s death, Farhad wallowed in great grief and stabbed himself to death. The legend says that red tulips bloomed in spots where his blood droplets fell. Since then, red tulips have been a symbol of the declaration of eternal love.

In Feng Shui, decorating your house with red tulips is said to bring both wealth and love to the homeowner. Additionally, it’s also believed that red tulips help people rise to recognition and fame. (so like, becoming a starbearer 4 days later?)

Orange signifies joy, enthusiasm, and the longing for rays of sunshine. (Literally Emi's nickname in the dub)

For these reasons, orange tulips represent happiness and excitement. They’re also used to convey a sense of understanding, mutual connection, and appreciation between two people, whether they’re in a relationship or not.

White tulips represent hope and caring – making them the perfect gift for someone you care about deeply. Associated with new beginnings, they are often given as a gesture of apology or to express forgiveness.

And now for the most important one of the bouquet:

Pink tulip means less intense affection and love than red, and also offers a more appropriate choice for friends and family. It also symbolizes a feeling of happiness, self-confidence and positivity.

Very interesting that pink one was the one chosen by him for this purpose, huh. Could it just be a weird mishap, or is it foreshadowing that his feelings are not as deep as he thinks? After all, we already had pink tulips before, thus the return in the title. Very interesting indeed.
