Magnus hating losing parts of him is the only reason Alec’s postponed making Magnus this particular present.

It’s an intimate shadowhunter gift and while Alec wants to give it to Magnus mere days before meeting him, he also learns that Magnus isn’t going to appreciate the method behind the gift.

He fights with his desire to make it and his concern of upsetting Magnus for weeks before he finally gives in. It’s incredibly easy to slip while fighting and ‘accidentally’ let down his guard enough for a demon tail to take his pinky. The demon is dead a moment later and while his team is giving him wary looks, Alec merely smirks as he reaches down and collects the digit.

“Sir?” Mirai asks him warily, her gaze careful as she watches him.

“A present, for Magnus.” He tells her casually and then, because he knows his hunters will only be more curious, he adds. “Magnus doesn’t like it when I purposefully maim myself. It seems liked a good opportunity to avoid that.”

“Makes sense.” Mirai agrees and she sighs as she looks over the mess, “makes more sense then why these demons nested here.”

Alec nods in agreement and then leaves, since his presence had never been necessary, and he’d only gone as an excuse to get the materials he needed.

He draws the necessary runes and leaves his finger to his beetles to eat the flesh until the bone is clean and polished and then shows himself to the infirmary.

The medical team is pleased with how clean the cut is and he’ll have a new pinky by nightfall, even if the itch and burn of regrowth is distracting.

The bones are clean before his pinky is regrown, but Alec sets up his tools carefully and lays everything out. He won’t sleep until this is finished, because there is no where he wants to lay his head besides next to Magnus’ own. Which means he needs to finish this quickly.

The bones are tiny and delicate, and Alec has very limited room for mistakes, especially because he doesn’t think Magnus is going to let him get away with the same excuse twice.  So, it takes him twice as long as it should, but it’s worth it for the tiny bone’s runes in nephil and Edomeic both. It ends up being no bigger than the tip of his stele and he sets it with a platinum thread on a thin loop that can be hung on a necklace or an earring.

When he’s healed and there’s no evidence of the injury, he goes to Magnus’ with a velvet bag that holds the charm. He presents it with a soft smile, because while Magnus is always delighted by the gifts, he always acts surprised as well. Alec’s going to lure that surprise away eventually, but for now he enjoys it as an aspect of Magnus that needs to be adored.

“Darling, for me?” Magnus asks in delight and then his face pulls into a grimace that Alec wants to kiss away. “Alexander, did you cut off a piece of yourself?” Magnus accuses and Alec is relieved that he can shake his head and promise sincerely that he did not.

“A mishap in the field.” He assures him, “already healed.” And he wiggled his fingers for good measure and Magnus kisses each of them, laving them all with love.

“Unacceptable, I can’t bear to part with a single atom of you ever again.” Magnus swears and he clings to Alexander’s hand, unwilling to let go of it when his lips are forced to part from Alexander’s knuckles so he can speak. “You must be more careful, darling. As ghastly as the charm is, it can’t possibly compare to what you meant to me.”

Alexander’s lashes flutter and he ducks his head, letting Magnus sigh in delight and press kisses to Alexander’s jaw and the hollow of his ear.

Magnus fixes the tiny charms of bones lined with demonic runes to dangle from his ear. A piercing everyone can see and admire and know that he carries a devoted piece of Alexander with him always.

“Good fortune and protection for the one I love.” Alexander whispers to him something so sweet and devoted in his voice and Alexander nuzzles into Magnus’ palms, the depth of the stars in his eyes.

Matthew I like because I am also a chronic fashionista. My closet looks like a costume shed and has about that much material in it too. I have so much jewellery I need a replica salmagundi tin to store it out. I may not be addicted to any dangerous substances but I have a serious retail therapy problem and boy does it show.

Matthew and Alastair because we share a trauma: psychopathic fifth graders. I may not relate much to the rest of Alastair's story but I know what it's like to have the kid you called best friend for five years throw gravel at you, it does things to the brain and he'll always have a place in my heart for surviving that with me.

Thomas because this guy has hidden depths. He looks like he's just this kind doofus but he has so many more layers than that and I especially love the angry ones.

Matthew: I don't usually deal with headcanons about canon where [we know what] happened but I do have this one about that—in his grief and also in attempting to grow closer to his father he tries approaching science from a theatre perspective. He befriends a few stage effects people, gets them to help him understand how this chemistry stuff works. And then he accidentally gets himself way too into the backstage side of theatre. Maybe as a Shadowhunter he can't act on stage which would be his preference but nobody said he couldn't take home a project or two for an overwhelmed costume mistress or be an advising consultant on Baroque furniture for the set people or—

Alastair: he started messing with his hair when he was in the Academy already, even before he started dyeing it. Elias wouldn't shell out cash for Alastair to get his hair cut while he was there and he wasn't going around with long hair other people could pull, no sir, plus he wasn't facing down his father's insults about it, so he taught himself to do it. He'd hack away with the shears and the first few times it looked absolutely horrendous but with practice he learned tricks and got better. Between that and the hair dye he's actually secretly a really good hairstylist but nobody will ever know because he won't do it for anyone else. After the events of Chain of Thorns he decides he'll give in and try having someone else cut his hair, he doesn't have to do it anymore so he can lay off and relax now. He hates it. It doesn't look right. The barbers don't know his style the way he does. He goes straight back to doing it himself.

Thomas: he likes knit sweaters/jumpers, which are just barely starting to become a Thing then, and they'll really kick off during the wars. Particularly argyle and cable-knit. They're warm, he looks good in them, and they go on and off a lot easier than waistcoats. The problem is they're not easy to find in his size. He has to order in from some obscure local company in some small town somewhere and spend nearly as much on postage as he does on the sweaters themselves.

23 is hard because I do not under any circumstances have good answers for this nor energy to dig them up because I interact with the art so little. Like, it exists, I'm aware of it, I've seen it, but it's not my preferred way of engaging the media so I kind of like it all equally and don't really have attachments.

yeah this prompt took a turn out of nowhere but i had fun writing it and i hope you enjoy

It starts because Alec needs a way to get through Magnus’ wards without leaving a gaping hole in the wards. Or letting Magnus be ambushed by Alec’s idiotic siblings and pet baby-shadowhunter at the same time.

Alec’s known Magnus for two weeks and he’d rather kill himself and his entire Institute than risk Magnus being affected negatively by the parts of Alec’s life where he lacks control.

Magnus refuses to hide his lair from everyone if it also includes Alec and while Alec tries to make him listen to reason, Magnus is incredibly capable of distracting Alec at the worst moments.

“Please—” Alec manages to gasp out from where Magnus is sucking a mark onto his neck. “Magnus, just— consider it.”

It’s beyond hard to keep thinking of things beyond the feel of Magnus touching him and the pleasure that’s hazing his thoughts. It does work a little, however, and Magnus pulls away with a slick noise and a disappointed hum.

“Clearly I’m not taking good enough care of you, if you’re still so coherent.”

Alec knows Magnus isn’t actually talking to him, it’s why it makes him whine and try to press closer because he wants to figure this out first. “Please Magnus, just—” and he babbles because he’s about to lose himself to wherever Magnus takes him, but he desperately wants Magnus safe. “Ward me, ‘kay? Lock me in, just please. Don’t take down your war wards.”

There’s a wobble to his voice and Alec honestly isn’t sure if it’s from the fear of Magnus being attacked or from how overwhelmed he’s feeling.

“Oh, you’d let me do that?” Magnus murmurs, something low and dark in his voice and it’s new. Incredibly new and so different from the handsome, gentle Dom that Alec ran into on a mission. The Dom that had politely kept his distance and his manners and waited until Alec wanted to talk. Waited for Alec to sit near him and Alec to reach out, even though Alec hadn’t thought he’d be brave enough to.

Magnus made him want things that Alec never imagined possible, however, and Alec wants him more than he wants a lifetime of pleasing the clave.

So, it’s new.

Like something between them is about to change.

“Did you know that in the downworld, we use piercings to demonstrate the hierarchy of a claim?”

Magnus reaches out and runs his fingers over Alexander’s face, his beautiful, stunning sub who knelt so hesitantly but trustingly for Magnus. Who reacted to Magnus’ careful praise and touch like a butterfly newly emerged from chrysalis, wings not yet fully formed.

The dark part of Magnus’ lust wanted and still wants to just take. All it would take for such fragility is a simple touch. It would be easy to cripple Alexander, to pin him down and make him expose his pretty wings and cut his primary feathers, binding him to the ground where he could never escape Magnus’ reach.

Instead, Magnus has to let Alexander come to him. He has to wait for Alexander to carefully and slowly burrow his way into Magnus’ chest, past his defenses where Magnus can build up walls around themselves.

However, it’s slow.

If Alexander offers even a taste of what Magnus is ravenous for, then he’s going to take it all and gorge himself on Alexander. Glut himself until he’s sated, and it will be exactly what Alexander has asked for.

What Magnus is going to make him beg for.

“It would tie you to me.” Magnus murmurs and he watches Alexander carefully, noticing how he flushes a bit but seems pleased, relieved by the admission.

“I don’t want to lose you.” Alexander admits, like Magnus would ever let himself be lost.  As if Magnus would ever let Alexander traverse beyond where Magnus can collect him from.

“Then let me keep you, pretty boy.” Magnus croons and Alexander falls for his trap so sweetly, a tiger who walked itself into a cave and laid down for the snake to strike.

The first piercing is a helix in the cartilage of Alexander’s right ear.  A second, third and fourth follow and Magnus doesn’t numb the pain, instead each time he slides the needles through, he grinds his thigh against Alexander and his boy is distracted by a potent cocktail of pain and pleasure. Each hoop has a tiny demon pearl with a different color, the various degree of spells that Magnus is layering over his sub with a claim that every downworlder will know and respect.

Magnus stops at four only because Alexander is glassy eyed from where Magnus is settled on his lap and then Magnus kisses him aware, so he can do the last three.

A tragus piercing with a shard of hellfire, a forward helix in his left ear and made from Magnus’ blood and an orbital piercing with a tiny ember of Edom’s moon.

It’s the closest Magnus can offer to a collar for now. The most visible claim he can make on Alexander while still allowing his sub the freedom he still thinks he wants.

So, Magnus kisses him now and plans on just how else he’ll pierce his boy, when Alexander is finally, completely and publicly claimed as his.

imagine magnus and alec taking madzie trick or treating for halloween because unfortunately catarina has to work the late shift at the hospital so therefore can't do it herself and they let madzie be anything she wants and she just says she wants to be them because of course she absolutely adores her uncle alec and uncle magnus. so magnus adds highlights to her hair to match his current ones and puts golden eyeliner around her eyes and alec draws a deflect rune on her neck with face paint, being careful of her gills and adds other runes to her arms. and there's a lot of discussion about how to combine their clothing styles but she ends up looking adorable in a leather look jeans, a plain black t-shirt and a suede burgundy biker jacket with studs on the shoulders and some biker boots. she also has a few rings on her fingers and a small ear cuff on her ear while a toy bow and quiver rest in her hands. and madzie has the biggest smile on her face ever like she's so happy because she looks like two of her favourite people in the world like bless magnus and alec would be close to crying and they'd be taking so many photos because honestly they have never seen someone look more adorable
