Park Seonghwa’s Home for Displaced Downworlders

Character intros, Part 2:

Park Seonghwa: a Warlock older than even the formidable Kim Hongjoong. Seonghwa first met Hongjoong not long after he had first turned, and helped him through the transition. The two became fast friends, having to fight side by side for their survival as Downworlders were readily hunted in that time. As the world grew calmer, Hongjoong helped him set up what is now known as the Home for Displaced Downworlders; a refuge where any person, no matter their lineage or their circumstance, could find shelter and safety. They were as thick as thieves, best friends seemingly as close as Parabatai, until a single argument destroyed everything, creating a seemingly unbreakable rift.

Kang Yeosang: A member of the Seelie Court, Yeosang was found by Seonghwa embedded in the ice of a frozen lake. When he was finally freed, he retained no memory of who he was and how he’d got there, and so became a resident of Seonghwa’s Home. Feeling little connection to the Fae World, he decided to stay with Seonghwa, helping him care for Downworlders who, like him, had nowhere else to go.

Choi Jongho: a werewolf cub found by one of Seonghwa’s scouts who’s pack was nowhere to be found. Like Yeosang, Jongho elected to stay with Seonghwa instead of searching for a new pack to take him in. Of all the residents in the Home, he is particularly fond of Yeosang, as he is the only one who, quote, “isn’t a walking headache”.

Choi San: a Shadowhunter, and one of the most promising young Nephilim in his generation. San has been taught his entire life that, despite what the Accords say, Downworlders are corrupted by nature as a result of their demonic lineage. He has been told stories upon stories of the devastation they have rained down upon mankind and his Shadowhunter kin. And yet, when he comes across a young vampire whilst out on a simple scouting mission, he cannot help but question these teachings. Surely this terrified (and very beautiful) boy is as deserving of help as much as anyone else?

Minor Characters of note:

Stray Kids and Itzy will appear as a local Werewolf pack with ties to Seonghwa

The Xikers boys will be mentioned as some of the surviving members of Hongjoong’s clan.

The Dreamcatcher members will make appearances as fellow Warlocks and Faeries

Summary: Virtual Author Talk with Cassandra Clare at San Anselmo Public Library (23/08/23)

Cassie wrote her first “novel” when she was 12 on a Mac computer, the infamous The Beautiful Cassandra that she regularly teases to us. She got into writing fiction professionally full-time after leaving her journalism job in 2006.

Finishing City of Bones took about 3-4 years because it was her first novel. Holly Black was the one who hooked her up with her first agent who then got the book published, which was a really new experience. She said that the publishing process was initially surprising to her because of how crazily long it takes to get a single book published.

Cassie acknowledges that City of Bones is starkly “different” from the rest of all her books in colour and voice, because of how experimental the novel writing process was for her. She said she thinks she’s evolved a lot as a writer since then.

She aims for psychological realism in her books even though it’s fantasy. She tries to see each character as a fully-formed person who can exist outside of the immediate plot. She creates worksheets to write her characters.

She also believes it’s necessary to let your main characters make bad mistakes – she cites Matthew as a prominent example i.e. someone highly reactive to their own mistakes. Matthew is defined by his regret and his need to fix his mistakes. She thinks Matthew is one of the most relatable characters because of this.

She’s very drawn to the found family trope because of how much she moved around as a kid – the stability and love of a found family is something she’s worked to build her whole life. She emphasizes the importance of friendship and its different forms in life.

Cassie cites Magnus as the character who turned out most differently than she had initially planned – she hadn’t originally anticipated how significant Magnus would be in the wider scheme of the series.

Doing The Last Hours was, at least a little, in response to people’s excitement about The Family Tree back in 2013.

Her advice for writing fantasy worlds is to create a flexible and expansive magic system so it can grow with you as a writer. She also emphasizes letting your favorite characters make poor decisions – your characters determine the plot and not the other way around.

Cassie strikes a balance between planning worldbuilding details beforehand and then spontaneously adding in new things in the writing process. The Scholomance is an example of something new that was added later in the TSC writing chronology.

She decided that Sword Catcher had to be in the adult publishing category because when she initially developed the characters, they just appeared as people in their twenties. With TSC, the characters had just appeared to her as teenagers then. Writing characters in these different life stages was interesting and challenging.

Sword Catcher is the first in a duology, but she’d like it to be four books if it’s successful.

Cassie has always wanted to write Shadowhunters in the Roaring ‘20s but she has no idea what the plot would possibly be.

She doesn’t read TSC fanfiction, but her husband has informed her of a popular Magnus X BTS fanfiction on AO3. She stays away from fanfiction, but she is very invested in the fanart of her works. Her favorite artist is, of course, Cassandra Jean, and she also loves Charlie Bowater.

She loves writing with Holly Black and probably would only do more Middle Grade writing with her.

She is very much anti-censorship and anti-banning books, especially because of the form it takes in the US (aka, censorsing books dealing with issues affecting the BIPOC and queer communities).

She doesn’t believe they’ll do another TMI adaptation in any form, even though she doesn’t believe the TMI books’ story was ever truly told. She hopes, one day, that TID can get made as it’s the most adaptable series in her catalogue for logistical reasons.

If she couldn’t be a fiction writer, her dream job would be a travel writer. She intensely loves traveling and making her characters travel as well.

Her favorite author of all time is Dorothy Dunnett. She thinks you should check out The Queen’s Thief by Megan Whaler Turner (I agree). And she’s currently reading Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak (I really enjoyed this one).

I’ve been a bit of a fan of the shadowhunters books for a bit over a year now, but I have something to say. I discovered the series bc I’m a massive stranger things fan and Jamie Campbell Bower (Henry/001) is hot and one of my celeb crushes. So like any fangirl would do, I researched his other roles. Then I discovered that he played jace in the 2013 shadowhunters movie. I watched it, enjoyed it, and decided to read the books. But I saw many flaws and as you’ve mentioned, Clare does overly describe Jace as hot. Jace is one of my main fictional crushes (Jamie Bowers 😳😳😳) but even as someone who’s read fanfic abt him, watched edits of him, obsessed over him for the past year, even I cringe and get irritated by Clare’s descriptions, which says a lot 💀

Jace by far is the most sexualized and objectified character in the series (to clarify: in TMI). No other character comes even near to the level he is being treated by Clare and her writing. It's disturbing on its own as well, but considering that Jace's character is introduced as a teenager—extra yuck.

I think there is a clear difference being infatuated with someone based on their looks, talents, whatnot, and treating them mostly as objects of desire to fawn over. In addition to understanding that no matter what content of them we consume they are their own whole person outside all that. It's a loaded topic for sure and has more nuance to it than this (which I'm sure you know and understand and don't need me to tell you), but as you said, it is a funny juxtaposition that even someone smitten by Jace (even by extention of Jamie Campbell Bower) gets disgruntled by Clare's writing.

The writing of Jace reflects the idea that Clare doesn't really know how to treat him as human and an individual outside his appearance sans the relishing in childhood trauma, especially considering the thematic, the style, and the wording that surrounds Jace in the series. It's beyond repetitive because Clare doesn't have the ability to describe Jace (notably through Clary) more through his characterization than his appearance. Which also is evident with other relationships and characters as well.

I'm looking for a specific fic, and maybe you can help me, because it drives me insane.

I don't know the titel anymore, but it was on ao3. In the fic Imogen Herondale deruned Alec and broke the parabatai bond between him and Jace, and he cant remember the Shadowworld anymore. A friend of Magnus finds him, and they all try to get his memorys back and figure out what happend. It was really heartbreaking and fantasic.

The demons attacked from an intersecting alley on the left, their only warning a formless dark cloud racing toward them in full moonlight against the wind.

Buck had enough time to see the yellow flames of their eyes, floating in the smoke, before they were upon them. Instinct and years of training had him withdrawing his Jian from between his shoulder blades even as he pivoted and ducked under the attack, swiping at their shadowy legs with his sword. They barreled by him, and he somersaulted into a crouch, assessing the situation.

Eddie, staff swishing and smacking, seraph blades extended in a silvery blur, fought two Iblis demons at the rear of the alley. Another two, likely the ones he’d ducked, had already reversed course, one heading to increase the odds against Eddie and the other stalking back towards Buck, fiery eyes menacing in the moonlight.

Four demons.

Specifically four Iblis demons.

He hated Iblis demons. It’s not that they were particularly dangerous or difficult. They were just annoying, like fighting smoke. Were they solid, he could dispatch them in a heartbeat. Instead, he had to waste precious time finding the solid body within the amorphous mass of swirling darkness to stab.

Eyes darting everywhere, Buck knew he had about three seconds to strategize before he needed to act.

Buck’s first instinct was to protect an outnumbered Eddie, to flip over the single demon and race to his side, but then they’d both be cornered by all four demons. Not good. No, he needed to send the nearest demon back to hell first and then attack the others, drawing them away from Eddie so that he could escape the dead end.

A quick glance showed Eddie holding his own, the blades flashing in a bright arc underneath the moonlight as his staff whirled. As long as Buck could take out this first demon quickly, Eddie would be fine.

Buck exploded up just as the demon extended a long arm to swipe at him, flipping over its head and slicing at its shoulder from above. As he landed, he thrust his Jian into what he could only assume was the demon’s back. The demon screamed, and he twisted the blade, hoping it would be enough.

It wasn’t.

One of the demon’s arms sliced down between them, dislodging the blade, and the other swiped across his face, launching him into the brick wall. He braced himself for impact, his side slamming into the wall. He landed on his feet and took off at a run, leading the demon away from Eddie. As he approached the dumpster near the alley entrance, Buck leaped, one foot landing on the lid while the other sprang off the wall, launching him backwards and sideways at the unsuspecting demon. Twisting in mid-air, Buck swung his Jian as he flew by the demon, severing its head. Ichor splashed, and within seconds the smoke had dissipated.

Buck landed in a roll, and without stopping his momentum, he stood and sprinted back towards Eddie.

The second demon didn’t know what hit him. Buck’s soundless rune worked perfectly, and he’d sliced the demon in half before it even knew he was there.

The smokey vapor disappeared in a puff, giving Buck a clear view of Eddie fighting off both demons at once. He was poetry in motion.

A few things about Dusklain, because its my OC and my Blog I can do whatever I want :3c

Dusklain had slightly-above-average exposure to Gaius. While she was hardly exceptional among her contingent, she did end up helping Allie, the youngest of Gaius' adoptive children for a time.

Because of this exposure, Gaius did recognize Dusk at the Praetorium, though couldn't meaningfully place her at the time. By his appearance as Shadowhunter, however, he had remembered.

Dusk was also deeply invested in the Shadows of Werlyt campaign.

Dusk didn't originally plan on working her way up the ranks as a member of the godsbow; her first choice would have been to join the Conjurers' Guild after securing her place in Gridania.

The reason she didn't do this is because her ability to manipulate aether was still sorely lacking. She spent a good deal of time working with E-Yumi-San, but as with her failed training as a Geomancer among her people, it proved fruitless. Some block existed that she was unprepared to topple.

A major breakthrough occurs during her training as a proper Bard. The techniques of "spinning" aether become the basis by which she learns all other disciplines.

Dusk worked closely with Yll Fen before learning the trade (one of two canon crafting skills she has learned). Her work within the guild is partly responsible for the philosophies that carry her through the story.

She is a seasoned leatherworker and tradeswoman before she departs Gridania, though her ability to comfortably cook had not yet been restored.

Prior to the Sundering (and, in the version of events where it occurs, before she took the seat of Azem) Dusk was an Amaurotine Ranger, maintaining the safety of travelways and playing diplomat and guardian where necessary. Hints of these experiences linger in the Dusklain of the eighth astral era, and manifest particularly in her atypically acrobatic methods in combat.

Dusklain uses two unique techniques within the discipline of the Gunbreaker: A battery of explosions she deemed "Oni's Teeth", and a method of shedding a barrier of aether off her body to take blows in her stead (not unlike the Pokemon move "Substitute").

There are two "breakpoints" in Dusk's story: If the ancient Dusklain was takes the seat of Azem, and (in the timeline where she never did) how she responds to the events in Azys Lla. The contrasting storyline sees her adopt a portion of Sephirot's power, and departs between Heavensward and Stormblood to reclaim her homeland (The Warlord version of events). In all versions of events she possesses the Traveler's Ward, though from whence it came differs.

Dusklain canonically heard the song "Answers", and in fact is the advent which prompted her to break from Conscription and flee to Eorzea.
