Hey I have a question. I’m just getting started into daedra worship and I want to worship peryite. How should I approach this? How do I start and where do I begin?
I want to worship Peryite but nobody in TES witchcraft does. How should I do it? Where do I start? What would an altar look like for him?
(I added the message you sent to my regular blog, shadowedpath, for the sake of answering more fully)
Okay *rubs hands together* Now keep in mind that I’ve never worshiped Peryite, now have I spoken to anyone who has. So this is going to be mostly generalized information, with a few things specific to Him.
Personally, when I want to get to know a deity, any deity, I just talk to them. But I’ve also got a really good “godphone” (AKA I’m good at receiving messages, so I can have actual back-and-forth conversations) so unless you have that, you may not get the desired result. Still try tho! Even if you can’t hear the response, talking to gods is a good way to feel closer to them and feel like you have a relationship with them.
Divination is another good way to communicate. Personally I like to use pendulums, which you can make out of anything. Hang something moderately heavy on a string, program it by swinging it in one direction and telling it that means yes, and another direction and telling it that means no. You can also make a pendulum board (they can be as simple as yes/no, or as complicated as the whole alphabet). Other good divination methods that don’t require going out and buying anything are shufflemancy and bibliomancy/stichomancy. (As those aren’t methods I use, I can’t give you any tips on them, but google or a tumblr search should be helpful.)
I don’t actually use altars, personally, I use shrines, which can look like anything, honestly. They can be a shelf, a box, a jar, even a photo collage on your wall.
(Because some people use the term interchangeably, altars are work spaces, so they might have tools and things you would use in a spell or ritual. Shrines are a dedicated space that would have items for the deity or that remind you of the deity, such as images, statues, and offerings.)
Shrines can have an array of items on them. Photos or statues of the deity, symbols of them, items that have correspondences with them.
For example, my shrine to Sanguine contains a plastic skull, a red fabric rose, and a sample bottle of tequila. My shrine to Dibella has a wood-backed mirror, a fabric peony (I think?), and a necklace charm shaped like an artist’s paint board and brush. My shrine to Azura (the biggest of the three) has a candle, a pink fabric rose, a piece of rose quartz I dedicated to Her, a moon and star ring, and a devotional bracelet I made.
If I were to set up a shrine for Peryite, I would probably put a plastic rat, a red-capped mushroom (plastic or ceramic), and a piece of turquoise (used in cursing to cause corruption and decay) either anointed with hemlock oil (used for anointing talismans for destructive work) or with snot smeared on it. Or both *shrug*
From the Daedra Worship forum:
Suggested plants for Peryite are: Mushrooms, ipecacuanha (induces vomiting when digested)
Offerings: Used tissue, incense, rotting fruit, animal parts, organ talismans, rats
Colors: sickly yellow-green
Summoning day: April 9th
Celebrate by: Endure extreme weather (You don’t want to intentionally make yourself sick―you want to make yourself stronger against disease.)
Back on the topic of how to start a relationship with Peryite, if you want a more formal way of doing things, if you like using rituals, here’s how I would do it:
Set up a meal with a plate for you and a plate or offering bowl for Peryite. Collect foods He would enjoy. (I would get mushrooms, fruit such as an apple, peach, or pear that has a bad spot on it (important that it’s just a spot, you’re gonna be taking a bite from it) and some kind of meat such as corned beef or a pickled meat or possibly a smoked jerky (the idea is a meat preserved in an old-fashioned manner))
In a dark room, light incense (I would choose the worst-smelling incense I could stomach) and several candles (somewhere in the yellow to green color range). Invite Peryite to join you. Eat the meal, taking bites for yourself and offering bites to Peryite. When it comes to the fruit, take your bite out of the side opposite the bad spot, so you’re not actually eating any of the rot, and offer the rest to Peryite. (This is functionally no different than cutting the bad spot out and eating the rest, it’s safe to do as long as the bad spot isn’t too big.)
Once you’ve finished eating, tell Peryite what you want from Him -- what manner of business transaction or worshipful relationship you desire to have. Tell Him what you want from Him, and what you’ll offer in return. Then thank Him for his time, blow out the incense and candles, and turn the lights back on.
Of course you don’t have to do exactly that, you can change or tweak things until they feel right for you.
I would suggest going through UESP and finding all the info you can on Peryite, and put some time and meditation into really connecting to Him and His sphere. Look around and find things that remind you of Him. Only you can define your relationship to any of the Princes. And sometimes that takes time and research.
