Trailing Abutilon or Chinese Lantern has been flowering continuously for the last year and a half at least (Abutilon megapotamicum or Callianthe megapotamica) native to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay a shrub that can grow to 2.5 metres tall. Mine does spread a fair bit but usually is less than two feet high. I pretty much haven’t watered it for the last year and it’s still green and colourful. The beginnings of foliage colour on the highly desirable Blechnum brasiliense ‘Volcano’ (Dwarf Tree Fern Volcano). . In the pic you can see the youngest foliage displaying the very beginnings (it gets much better!) of the red colouring that gives it its name Volcano, as it appears to erupt hot lava-red central leaves from each rosette. . Not as hardy as other Blechnum species, but given a decent frost-free spot, it is a fantastic fern for foliage colour. Seriously, Google it to see just how impressive it can be. My mate @neilalcock introduced this plant to the UK market (not sure if he raised it or not). . Ferns are understandably popular, but few have much in the way of colour change. This is a welcome addition to the range, but be sure to protect from the cold. You could conceivably grow it indoors in a conservatory. . When it gets bigger and more established, it will form a small trunk and the fronds are longer, straighter and more pronounced in their juvenile colouration. . While popular, Ferns are often just chucked together with little thought about their preferred soil and site requirements. Feeling the fire of Crocosmia ‘Emberglow’ (Montbretia) today despite the weather. #oneadayplant . I love Crocosmia as a plant. They were one of the first plants that I found interesting as a child (again in my childhood garden) and most definitely lead on to my interest in other plants, pushing me every closer to my career path. . I am less keen on the heavily orange coloured forms, but I am yet to find any that I really dislike. I’m a huge fan of the inexplicably hardly seen giant pleated leaves and purple-budded red flowers of C. paniculata, now only really commonly seen in Scotland and unknown to many southern English gardeners except as a probable parent of the famous C. ‘Lucifer’. . Emberglow is a good garden variety with a rich and yet vibrant red flower on a neat plant less than 1m (3’) tall. . I’m not one for panicking about the dreaded montbretia, I’ve never even seen a garden in trouble with overwhelming populations. They weed out really easily and I can think of many worse plants to have a glut of. Share with friends... or enemies, if you have any. . The best plantings I have ever seen of Crocosmia (regardless of variety), have been where they have been massed along a surface like a run against a shady wall of a building.
