Hello my old blog from twelve years ago. It is now 2024 and I am on my couch in Dana Point, CA. It is 12:12 am, a very fitting time for finding a 12 year old blog. It’s a rare Friday night off, shabbat shalom. I receive a text from a flame interest from a dating app called Jswipe and proceed to voice text back after googling all about textationships aka a virtual text relationship. I realize I’ve already fallen victim to the text relationship with no concrete plans of actually meeting up in sight. Not my style. I lay on the couch with the only sound of the electric “fireplace” heater on my “mantle” shelf. After a week of phone recovery from a stolen snatch in Hollywood, I finally have a working phone and I vigorously type my return blog entry for the first time in 12 years. I’ll attach a photo of my “shabbat” candles and “fireplace” for reference.

Pidgey comes back from her week with Grandpa tonight! Must remember to get the menorah out of the basement. With @docholligay and @mamaholligay gone, not a single one of her current primary caregivers is Jewish, so that should be fun and completely without incident. Three Goy And A Jew Baby. Our singing is sure to be just as flawless.

שמיני לאוקטובר 2023 בלי לחשוב פעמיים, נוטלת את הפמוטים של סבתא שלי ומניחה במזוודה. המזוודה מלאה וכבדה, האריזה חפוזה בלי דעת. פועלת בלי לחשוב על אוטומט, אבל ברור לי שפמוטי השבת באים איתי. עברה שנה, אני עדיין על מזוודות, נעה ונדה ממקום למקום. כשהגעתי לארצות הברית, באחת הפעמים כשישבתי עם סבתא שלי בסעודת ערב שבת, סיפרתי ל�� שלקחתי איתי את הפמוטים, את פמוטי השבת שלה. והיא ענתה לי: This is what Jewish do.

באופן מיידי המוח היהודי שלי חשב על תקופת השואה. הבריחה, הפחד, תחושת הנרדפות והאיום הקיומי היומיומי שהיה נוכח בכל מקום וקצב פעימות ליבי המריא. הבנתי שיש לפמוטים משמעות עמוקה וייחודית, והם סמל לזהות שלנו - להיותנו יהודים ולקדושת השבת. סבתא שלי הקשיבה לי והנהנה, היא העירה את תשומת ליבי לכך שהם היו עשויים כסף, נחושת או זהב ושהיה להם שווי כספי בימים של דחק, עוני, רעב וחוסר וודאות. אבל המחשבות שלי והנשמה שבי שוב נדדה לעולם הרוח, לסמליות, לתכלית ולמהות הסימבולית שטמונה בחפץ היקר שכולו אור אמונה וקדושה, לב ליבה של היהדות - השבת.
