Summary: The secession of Atlantis from Earth and its reformation as a city state is told through thirty-six unreliable narrators, in a mix of excerpts from academic books, interviews, poetry and so on, and a connecting straight narrative. (Summary from Fanlore)
Author: @cesperanza
Note from submitter: Despite only landing in novella territory at 52k words, Victors is one of the few fics that I think reaches the quality of a published novel while being totally inextricable from its fic roots. An insanely ambitious effort, completely worth the level of acclaim it's enjoyed in SGA fandom. It's THE McShep fic. Even if you're not a SGA fan, the way it plays with format is compelling on its own.

2022 Reading List
Thanks for tagging me @jadelotusflower as I do need to get around to more actual reading of books this year. Most of what I have read has been more along the lines of graphic novels- the first two Sword & Shield manga (which was cute fluff), most of the X-Men Evolution comic omnibus (waiting to finish season 2 before reading the rest), and The Art of Brave (so pretty and informative!). While I haven’t read it yet, I want to look over The Art of Frozen II soon.
Of course, I reread Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara the day I got my signed copy. It is so gorgeous and I appreciated the behind-the-scenes section in the new edition. Yes, the first one is the most iconic, but I personally enjoy all three main books (and the prequel is good, just short). Seriously, I love the Dinotopia franchise and I’m hoping it gets a revival soon-ish because I feel like a lot more could be done with it nowadays.
I did just read the SGA novella From the Depths, which was relatively light-hearted and I admit, there was a lot of Sparky-ish vibes going on, with a fun role reversal of Sheppard being the cautious expedition commander while Weir is the more reckless one who’s mistrusted by those back on Earth. However, I admit that meant everyone else was sidelined as a result, even Rodney who’s on the cover with them.
There are a lot of books in my backlog, including Dan Jones’ books on the Plantagenets and the War of the Roses. To be honest, I have read them before, via checking them from the library, but that was pre-pandemic so I recently obtained my own copies. The Nature of Middle-Earth is another book I want to read, but I keep not being in the right headspace as reading background on Middle-Earth tends to be a dense experience. Rewarding, though, so I ought to get around to it. Though it might lead into that LOTR & Sansukh reread I keep putting off, but that’ll be fun.
I’ve had the actual Ivanhoe for years and am about due for a reread, but to add a new twist to the experience I got the Wishbone Classics version to see just how closely the two align for myself. So that’ll be fun when I get around to it!
Oh, I almost forgot! I did read a book this year that talked about E.H. Shepard, especially his iconic work for Milne’s stories. To follow up on that, I want to get around to reading said stories, the beginning of a franchise. I say ‘reading’ opposed to ‘rereading’ as I’m not 100% sure if I did read them all as a kid. Afterwards, I’ll probably reread my favorite book of all, not just by Milne, which is Once on a Time. It’s so meta and fun!
Since I was a teen, I’d had The Book of Fire, but late last year I snagged the other three of the Dragon Quartet online. I’m a tad nervous about actually getting the whole experience, as the third book actually mostly made sense out of context and now the actual story has to live up to the backstory that I vaguely assembled in my head way back when. Eep. Which is why I haven’t done that reread yet.
Last December, I did read & comment on the first several Thalia’s Musings chapters so I really ought to go back and finish doing so for those books. I got reminded because I just saw XWP’s “For Him the Bell Tolls”, and the Cupid and Aphrodite dynamic there feels like it was an influence on how those deities interact in those web novels.
With 2023 approaching, I do need to start my Young Wizards reading if I’m going to properly celebrate the series’ 40th anniversary. Plus, similar to the Ivanhoe situation, I want to compare the original text books and my online New Millennium copies. I know that’ll be most important with A Wizard Alone, although maybe it’s because I’m high-functioning myself, but I don’t remember having an issue with the original version although maybe that’ll be different when I reread it as an adult. Still, I admire how Duane listened to people and changed the story as a result.
I’m still in the middle of TOS, although I did get a DS9 detour this weekend thanks to the Tribbles! It was a superb episode and I went back to get some screencaps afterwards, which will probably be posted later tonight. I bring this up because I have obtained both the Emissary novelization and the Deep Space Nine Companion to be part of those upcoming reviews. If “Trials and Tribble-ations” is any indication, I think I’ll really enjoy DS9.
I keep putting off any sort of Austen reread, mostly due to guilt because of the size of my ‘not yet read’ pile. However, I miss those stories so maybe I’ll just go and ahead and do a reread regardless. Sense and Sensibility in particular, as I still need to watch the 2008 miniseries.
What I miss most from the library is checking out Discworld novels and George O’Connor’s Olympians graphic novels. I haven’t been since February 2020. I could and should buy my own Discworld novels, but I struggle to decide which to get first. Though with May approaching, maybe it ought to be Night Watch. On the other, I like Moist’s stories and those that feature the witches. I genuinely feel like Tiffany’s brother with sweets when trying to decide. It doesn’t help that at this point, I really shouldn’t be adding to my to-read pile.
Honestly, if anyone has suggestions on what to read first, I’d appreciate it.
Tagging @magic-owl @ladytharen @bex-pendragon @mylittleredgirl @hewwwwkayyyy @asokatanos if they want to do one and anybody else who feels up to it!

I was heavy in the aspec discourse when it was in full swing, under my old url(s). I argued directly with sobercommunist and rebelbaze and discourseprincesa. I spent over a year constantly shoveling bad shit, spreading positivity when I could, and in general tanking because I could. I wrote novella-length posts and point-by-point rebuttals. I had smear posts going around about me and had my disabilities specifically targeted for ableist harassment.
I remember the origin of “trans or SGA” as a community litmus and the way it was used to invalidate mspec and nonbinary people, and how the fact that “SGA” originated in Mormon conversion therapy was ignored and ridiculed. I remember how it tied into the further push to regard attraction to nonbinary people as “fetishizing.” I remember the pushback against queer that began at close to the same time as the aspec discourse itself. I remember the dovecourse and the mooncourse and the accusations of pedophilia leveled at aspecs and our supporters. I remember the aspec positivity tags being flooded with gore and porn and suicide baiting. I remember the creator of the orange-and-pink lesbian flag being nastily anti-aspec and walking herself back to “neutral” when the design got popular, and the smear campaigns against queer creators who refused to use the flag in their designs.
I was eventually driven away when anti-aspec discoursers repeated the same words and sentiments my abuser had used against me, and insisted that I must have been the abusive one because I had “withheld” sex from my abuser. I had to quit for my mental health, and almost quit the site entirely, because even without actively engaging, it was impossible to escape. It worsened my anxiety disorder and AvPD symptoms immeasurably.
The damage was overwhelming, to the point that almost no one who was prominent on the pro-aspec side of the discourse is on tumblr anymore, and those who are have (like me) hopped urls or gone silent. It was horrible. It made so many aspecs hate themselves and shove themselves back into the closet because it was “inappropriate/nsfw” to come out.
I don’t even have a cap for this. It just. It’s really impossible to describe the scope of what the discourse did to us.
I don't think people who weren't in ace community spaces pre-2016 really have any idea how much asexual communities and cultures have been destroyed by "ace discourse."
Like, if you know, you know, but if you don't know, I don't know if I can fully explain to you just how much we lost because hating asexuals was so normalized it's basically a fucking meme.

I got tagged by @bex-pendragon for ships & gifs but I don’t have a gif collection so it’ll be just words. Sorry about that, but to be fair some of these would have been gif-less anyway.
1- First Ship: Although I’d like to say Daniel/Vala from SG-1, it probably was actually Paton/Julia from COTRK.
2- First OTP: Toss up between Billy & Kimberly from MMPR (who I nowadays see in a purely platonic light) and RJ & Fran from Jungle Fury.
3- Current Fave Ship: While I’m definitely waffling on whether they’re platonic or romantic, I’m definitely still most invested in the dynamic between Doctors McKay & Beckett in SGA.
4- Your Ship from the First Minute: Jyn & Cassian in Rogue One had a ridiculous amount of chemistry from the start.
5- You Wish They Had Been Endgame: Iris West & Eddie were just so cute together in The Flash’s first season.
6- You Wish They Had Been Canon: The aforementioned RJ & Fran.
7- Most of the Fandom Hates But You Love: Wild Force isn’t very popular but I really do like how Princess Shayla & Merrick’s storyline is a deconstruction of the ‘courtly love’ dynamic.
8- Don’t Watch But Still Ship: Although I only saw the first season years ago, I still ship Korrasami. And yes, I do want to watch the rest; I just have an expanding backlog of media.
9- You Wish They Had a Different Storyline: This is probably not by the rules, but I do wish that Morwen & Telemain in Enchanted Forest Chronicles had gotten an actual subplot about their relationship instead of coming out of nowhere. I love them separately & together, but I have to admit them getting together wasn’t well explained.
10- Fave Ship That is Endgame: As just reaffirmed by the new novella, Tom & Carl in Young Wizards.
This was fun! Tagging @asokatanos @mylittleredgirl @carsonsweebabyturtles @static-warp-bubble @magic-owl and whoever else who wants to do it!

Mostly I’ve been basking in relief that I survived last year but I do need to get back to watching & reviewing! I did watch 4 more Sun & Moon episodes in a mini-binge so odds are I’ll have to rewatch to do good individual reviews. Listen, I’m excited for the franchise’s 25th anniversary next month. And the Sun & Moon series has been my comfort watching the past several months.
I still need to write up my thoughts on The Mandalorian’s 1st season. It’s great; I’m just unsure what else to say that hasn’t been already said. I have seen Soul; it was a well-crafted movie well-suited to current events.
As far as On Ordeal goes, I’ve read Roshaun’s and some of Mamvish’s. There’s some deja vu going on, possibly from reading snippets years ago. I’ve also bought a few more Young Wizards tie-ins as well.
First up, I read the 1-17 OTP short stories. Based off one of them, it looks like just maybe Nita having blue hair in Owl Be Home for Christmas is because of Kit liking that color. So I’m tentatively hopeful that their lack of interactions in the newest novella was just the author not wanting to pin down the future too firmly. I honestly admire Diane Duane’s up-front interactions with her characters, which do pop up occasionally in these stories. The ‘real’ review will get written and then be scheduled for Valentine’s Day, obviously.
Edit (this paragraph only): I’d be fine if Nita & Kit weren’t romantically together in the future but the idea of their friendship completely dissolving has me a little worried. Especially since said friendship is basically the cornerstone of the series.
Next up will be the Advent Calendar and the 3 Feline Wizards books, which I’m really looking forward to. Even if I have zero clue when their reviews would go up. Though I do need to read Blood Ties, especially since it has Daniel in it. I’m still bitter we didn’t get that sixth season of SGA with Daniel Jackson. >:(
Once I’m done with it & Do No Harm, I’m not sure what if any more SG novels I’ll get. Any suggestions?
Watching-wise, my priority needs to be XWP & PRLG. I’ll hopefully make time to watch them tomorrow.

Okay, so I used media as a coping mechanism more than usual this year. ... Some of these I was genuinely surprised to realize were earlier this year, because again: it’s been weird.
I consumed & reviewed several movies, multiple books (including the PJO quintet and 9 COTRK books), the BBC Emma miniseries, most of The Flash’s first season, most of PRIS & some of PRLG, all of Farscape, the first 4 TCW seasons, most of The Mandalorian’s 1st season, some of Jackie Chan Adventures (all of 1, just over half of 2), two-thirds of season 1 of Sun & Moon, the final handful of SGA episodes along with multiple tie-in novels (and 1 audio drama), rewatched a single SG-1 episode, 3 Wishbone episodes, and roughly 80% of XWP’s 1st season. Oh, plus 18 BBC Merlin episodes.
Plus I reread my assortment of Dinotopia books, and watched the original miniseries as well as the brief TV show. And I’m preparing for a Young Wizards project, which has started by me reading the new novella. I might have been leaning into nostalgia this year.
This hasn’t exactly been a productive year, but I survived it. And I did get to see plenty of great media. I hope you all got the chance to consume some fun media this year too.
