"Preoccupation" acrylic on canvas Part of my series entitled ' A lil Sugah' Which in it's whole is an ode to growing up queer in the south. This particular piece is about being alienated for being visibly queer in my youth learning to occupy my time, and in hindsight the dangers that came from being alone. Special thanks to @sfqp for featuring the series in the first issue of KUDZU mag !!! #sfqp #kudzu #kudzumag #southernfriedqueerpride #pride #acrylicpaint #aarenkazhmir #queerartist #ALilSugah https://www.instagram.com/p/BkbT_OmH9EL/?igshid=m9b44wkcr127

honestly i think the whole ‘queer is a slur!!11!!!!!1!!’ discourse really is an online exclusive, cuz if you walked into any queer pride event in the south and tried that, you would undoubtedly get your shit rocked
like no shit it was a slur, so was Gay. so was Lesbian and Dyke. so was Transvestite but it still became the preferred term for trans people until most of us started using transgender (and there are still DEFINITELY older ppl who use transvestite and i’m not about to correct somebody who fought cops and shit for our rights!!). and if i ever find a better word than queer that neatly encapsulates my experience with gender and sexuality i’d jump on it! but for now, i’m QUEER. THAT is my identity, that is who i am, a queer person! and reminding a, quite frankly, Massive group of people that one of their primary descriptors was used as a slur for a long time isn’t helpful or constructive.
if you don’t like the term for yourself, cool, no worries. I will never personally refer to someone with a term their uncomfortable with cuz that’s their choice. but stop?? coming to queer people and telling them they have to keep that term to themselves and that it shouldn’t be use publicly??? if everyone decided suddenly that lesbian should be considered a slur again and no one should say it, im sure lesbians would be fuckin pissed dude.
And furthermore, stop fucking following people that OPENLY IDENTIFY AS QUEER IF YOU HATE THAT WORD SO MUCH. im sick of having to block folks ive been mutuals with for a while because one day they decide to wake up and reblog posts about how MY identity is a problem for them. I have the fact that im queer LISTED ON MY BLOGGGG do not FOLLOW ME if you don’t like that term!! it is that simple???
and again, really, EXCLUSIVELY an online problem. i have never seen anybody who attends Actual queer events take issue with the term, because theres bigger issues to deal with. One of the biggest lgbt organizations in my area is named SFQP; Southern Fried QUEER Pride. and they’re like, the go to group for when you’re queer and in need, or wanna host a gay event. No one takes issue with it, cuz quite frankly Local Biggots Trying To Kill Us is a big issue, language policing is definitely not.

“For six years, Southern Fried Queer Pride (SFQP) has built a community in the South amongst Black and brown queer and trans artists and organizers! To date, we have organized a total of 7 festivals in Atlanta, GA and Durham, NC; convening over 60 performers, artists, and educators and 2,000 attendees from throughout the South. Annually, SFQP hosts over 60 events and actions, from marches and community conversations to gallery shows, stage productions, and more. SFQP uplifts Southern queer culture; a culture that is so often overlooked by mainstream media. The time has come for more. SFQP needs your help and partnership to establish a Black queer & trans owned community space/center in Atlanta, GA. Our community is vibrant, resilient, and robust, but lacks brick and mortar spaces to commune, heal, and build. Community centers can play a direct role in providing safe, affirming spaces for Black and brown queer and trans folks, young people, disabled folks, and others marginalized by systemic injustice and lack of infrastructure to thrive. We want to build a space where people have the freedom to grow as individuals, artists, and organizers. This space will serve as a community arts center and venue space for artists, musicians, and creators as well as a dedicated space to host workshops and facilitate movement building. It will include green space for a community garden and a resource center to accommodate and provide for the needs of our community. And with your support, it will be sustainable.“

STONEWALL RIOTS
Did you know that we celebrate pride month in June because the Stonewall Riots occurred on the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan? It was actually former President Bill Clinton who, on 2 June 2000, declared June "Gay & Lesbian Pride Month."
To know more about the Stonewall Riots—what led to this revolt and what changed afterwards, please visit: https://www.history.com/topics/gay-rights/the-stonewall-riots.
Because it is pride month, and also because of the huge awakening that our country has been going through these past few weeks in regards of the racial disparities that deeply affect the black community, let us not forget: BLACK TRANS LIVES MATTER.
I urge you to join me into being as loud as possible in support of our black trans brothers and sister. And, not just today but every single day. I'm so proud of being part of such a beautiful, strong and transcending community. I know that if we stand together we can accomplish so much... starting with those who are the most marginalized inside of our own family.
Linked below, you'll find several organizations who work towards the wellness of the trans community. Opening the links and getting informed about their work is already a huge help and, if you can, donating (any amount) allows these organizations to keep fighting the good fight.

Interview with TAYLOR ALXNDR
We had the pleasure of interviewing TAYLOR ALXNDR over Zoom video! TAYLOR ALXNDR (they/she) is a DIY musician, drag performer, and community organizer based in Atlanta, GA. Raised in the rural edges of the metro area, ALXNDR has been creating in and captivating Atlanta and beyond since 2011. ALXNDR is the co-founder and current executive director of Southern Fried Queer Pride (SFQP), an Atlanta-based non-profit organization empowering Black queer and QTPOC centered communities in the South through the arts. They are also the mother of the House of ALXNDR, an Atlanta-based drag family and events hub, creating drag-centered, inclusive events. Getting her start performing at dive bars in the local Atlanta subversive queer drag scene, ALXNDR broke through in 2017 with her debut single “Nightwork”, an ode to the underbelly of nightlife. She followed it with her debut EP, Noise, later that year. In 2018, ALXNDR released her debut album Hologram. An observation of social media, technology, and communication set to dance-floor ready synth-pop with 80s flourishes, Hologram received critical acclaim and was listed as one of the top 10 albums to come from Atlanta in 2018 (#10). Writing, producing, and creative directing all of her music and content, ALXNDR’s DIY approach to her craft is born out of a need for honesty and an appreciation of the art form. ALXNDR’s live shows are a mixture of her interactive and improvisational background in drag, interest in video projection, and a foundational belief that music can make you think and dance. This has led her to perform with Charli XCX, King Princess, Mr Twin Sister, Sateen, & more. TAYLOR’s work has bee featured in Vice, Forbes, Out Magazine, Vogue, them., and more. Bandcamp called them an “underground drag icon”. They were voted as Atlanta’s Best Drag Queen & Best LGBTQ Performer in 2019. We want to hear from you! Today is the 20th of #November, and today is also the Transgender / Non-Binary Day of Remembrance. This year has been especially violent for trans and non-binary people, especially trans and non-binary people of color. 2020 marks the deadliest year on record since @humanrightscampaign started keeping track in 2013." . . “In 2020, at least 37 transgender and gender non-conforming people were victims of fatal violence — more than the Human Rights Campaign has recorded in any other year. This grim milestone proves what we have long known: this violence is an epidemic. Each one of the lives we lost was someone ripped from their family, their friends and their community by an act of senseless violence, often driven by bigotry and transphobia and inflamed by the rhetoric of those who oppose our progress,” said Human Rights Campaign Foundation President Alphonso David." - HRC . For more information, please visit their website and read their read report at https://link.thea@humanrightscampaign . . . To support trans and nonbinary people in the Atlanta Community, consider supporting organizations like @lost.n.found.youth, @transhousingcoalition, @transactioncoalition , a and @sfqp . . . The City of Atlanta, through Mayor @keishabottoms, has also made LGBTQ rights a priority by forming the @coalgbtq for the community to address LGBTQ-specific issues within the city. . . . . #lgbtq #transgender #nonbinary #trans #mtf #ftm #transwoman #transmen #protecttranskids #protecttranskidsofcolor #protectblacktranswomen #transdayofremembrance #transgenderdayofremembrance #transawarenessweek #hrc (at Studio Vosges) https://www.instagram.com/p/CH0wpuAJBtm/?igshid=j2kgl420b7zq
