People complaining about the Argan plot on my TL. I'm indifferent to it because it does follow the novel and it's not one of those novel things that don't adapt well for TV.

But I can see the complaints about it being in the last episode. I'd rather it be in the penultimate episode and then have the last episode dedicated to them rebuilding their new life. Like choosing the Yu-yeon name.

Overall, I didn't hate the last episode. The leads carried the episodes. I think the ending with the SLs was pointless. I get that anything happens in a time jump, but we've seen no progression really of their relationship. It's like a quick way to wrap up their storylines. But SFL literally had no storyline or purpose. SML at least had a storyline, and he had a purpose in the first half (to indirectly help our couple be a couple).

That's the only choice I question, the need for the SFL (and SML). The SFL was especially a mess that even the writers clearly didn't know what to do. One minute she's fangirling over ML and gets excited and acts like she has a date with the married ML (which she knows he's married), then after that, nothing. She suddenly stops fangirling and acts normal and this is before she learns about HJ as his wife.

People like to complain, it’s human nature.

I liked the Argan thing because it was in the novel and also because I was already a kdrama fan 15 years ago when so many dramas liked to send their OTPs to exotic war torn locations for make outs and torture (see Swallow the Sun, IRIS and Lobbyist among others. Side note - STS had a secondary OTP of a mercenary and suicidal stripper that was very matter of fact and they got a happy ending to boot; when people say nowadays kdramas are so more frank about things - well no they are not.) So that was yet another delicious throwback about this drama.

Anyone who complains (as I saw) about this being unbelievable or too OTT has clearly not been paying attention to the genre - this was a crack melo from ep 1. It stayed in genre until the end. I totally get if it’s not someone’s thing but it didn’t really pull a genre rug on anyone.

I was quite happy with the amount of post-plot fluff we got. We got half an ep and seeing that dramas have a long tradition of giving us 1 minute before the end in terms of happy stuff, that felt downright luxurious (even in the novel, the bulk of post-plot fluff is in the extras not the novel proper.) To be fair though, I am not really a fluff person and don’t have much interest in watching fluffy happy dating moments of even my favorite OTPs unless it’s narratively done in the middle as we we watch in knowledge the hammer of doom is coming. So this take is informed by that. (Shen Li remains close to unique for me in loving the fact that the entire last ep is dedicated to their cottagecore bliss post the plot resolution. But Shen Li is an outlier for me in many respects - when something hits well enough even my normal preferences melt away. I mean I love Suppli and that’s an office drama.)

As to second ML and second FL agree they weren’t as developed as they could have been (esp SFL) but I am just happy they weren’t ship interlopers. I rarely care much for SML/SFL unless they have their own interesting narrative not revolving a love a square so my expectations are usually low.

Ultimate while I did have some niggles (where is my naming scene, where?!?), Phone ended up my favorite kdrama of 2024 by a large margin, over even Lovely Runner, Black Out and Goryeo Khitan War.

I hope its success makes kdramas make more of those type of old school, intense, romance melos but I have my doubts.

Life is Lifing!

With DJ out of the house and Daze finally finished with his senior year, the Dreamer house has gone from 8 to now 7.

Surprisingly, Daze got a cool internship with the Newcrest Knights SFL Organization and moved to Newcrest. He and his girlfriend, Delilah, caught a quick flight and left the city. And now, there are 6.

Drew and Denim get ready to finish their last year of middle school. Denim starred on the basketball team and Drew did amazing as a cheerleader. Her pal, Jaxon, even stole the show on the court! Morgan even got Drew to take some pictures.

On their last day of school, Drew invites Jaxon over to the house to hang out and celebrate their summer. It is also the twin's birthday so he's there to celebrate with her.

Jax: This is your house? Drew: Yes. Is it bad? I hope it isn't. Jax: No... It's huge! Drew: Oh yeah. You'll get used to it. Hey, let me show you my room!

Drew: So you survived middle school! How do you feel pal? Jax: Like I'm about to faint and go to high school with the bigger big kids. Drew: We'll be fine. We gots each other! Nobody can stop us.

Jaxon: Why are you so nice? It took me weeks to make a friend besides you but you were so easy to talk to and get along with. Drew: *shrugs* I guess it's because I know how hard it is to make friends. When I was in kindergarten, I couldn't really say R's so it made it hard for me to talk. So now I'm nice to everyone.

Jaxon: That's real cool, Drew. Drew: Yeah, you got to treat people good. It all comes back to you. Plus, I think you're really cool Jax. You are a different person on the basketball court! Jaxon: I don't know what comes over me. I just want to go all in. I love playing ball. It was nice having a friend to cheer me on besides my parents.

Drew: *whispers* You were even better than Denny. I know he hated that. Jax: He did give me a hard time but nothing I couldn't handle.

They share a giggle and stare into each others eyes talking and smiling. Drew felt a little rumble in her tummy and she her heart skipped a beat.

Jax: So, what do you want for your birthday? Drew: I don't know. I think that I want to try something new. Jax: Really? Like what? Drew: *shrugs* Maybe a kiss? Maybe we shouldn't.

Jaxon's eyes grow wide and he stares at her. He smiles shyly and then looks into her eyes.

Jax: For you, I'd do it. Drew: If you don't want to, you don't have to. I just... I don't know. Maybe I'm just talking. Jax: You can give me a kiss. I don't bite. Wait, does my breath stink? Drew: No, it smells like the peanut m&m's you had at lunch. Jax: Okay, sweet. Are you ready? Drew: Yes. Are you ready? Jax: Yes.

They both close their eyes and lean into each other.

Their lips touch barely and they quickly pull away. Sharing giggles and snorts.

Drew: That was - Jax: I'm in love.

They share a loud laugh and squeal in the room.

Drew: Are you really? Jax: I don't know. I think I love you. Drew: You can't love me, Jax. Maybe as a friend! Jax: Maybe that's it. Drew: It has to be.

Drew stands to her feet and pulls Jaxon up to face her. Jaxon grabs her arm and pulls her in.

Drew: Maybe you are in love. Jax: I think I'm going to faint. Drew: *giggles and squeezes his cheeks*

Drew: It's okay! I think I love you too, pal! Jax: *giggles* Drew: Come on. Let's go play basketball. I'm really good. Jax: You might be good but I'm the greatest! Drew: Come on, let me show you!

They run outside and shoot hoops in the backyard. Morgan smiles from the window watching them giggle and laugh as they run around. Drew knows that she is terrible but she's having more fun acting like she knows what she's doing. Jaxon just giggles at her and plays like he normally does.

Soon Morgan comes outside and gestures for them to come inside as the cakes are there for the twins. They scurry in and Denim is already in the kitchen staring at the cake he cried for. Drew chose a more basic cake while Denim begged for the biggest cake he could find.

They approach their cakes as everyone gathers around singing for them.

They take deeps breaths and blow their candles out.

Morgan snaps away and watches as her babies turn into her teens...

Sucker for Love: Date to Die For follows Stardust, a Black asexual lesbian, as she returns to her hometown to investigate her parents' disappearance. She finds the town has been taken captive by bloodthirsty cultists of the eldritch goddess Black Goat of The Woods, Rhok'zan. Stardust now must fight for her life with the help of Rhok'zan, whose cult has now turned against her in their lust-driven madness. Stardust is immune to Rhok'zan's aura which drives people mad with lust, making her the only person who can stop the cult. In her journey to escape, Stardust's optimism and empathy save them both.

Sucker for Love: Date to Die For is a adaption of "The Shadow over Innsmouth" and reclaimation of H.P. Lovecraft's character, Shub-Niggurath. In Lovecraft's stories, she functions as a veiled representation of Lovecraft's fear that minorities may outpopulate white people. She appears as a perverse, monstrous deity who continually births horrifying pitch-black young, who consume non-believers with the intention of taking over the whole world. In the game, Shub-Niggurath's monstrous qualities are subverted in Rhok'zan as positive traits. Malevolence becomes maternal doting and warmth; a desire to consume and destroy becomes a desire to bless all living-beings, give them long-life, and heal their wounds.

Similarly, "The Shadow over Innsmouth" depicts a man who finds himself trapped in an unwelcoming town where its inhabitants have been attacked and forced to breed with Deep Ones. Their rumored hybrid offspring appear human before slowly turning into Deep Ones. The inhabitants' suspicious and hateful eyes follow him everywhere; there is no safe place to hide or help coming. The story themes reflect Lovecraft's fear of the unknown, trying to replicate the feeling of being white and traveling through a minority ghetto. Sucker for Love: Date to Die flips the script by reimagining that fear through the Black lense of sundown towns- places dominated by white people who use all the systems tipped in their favor to exclude people of color through threats and violence. Through Stardust's eyes, players experience the consuming sense of total vulnerability as a minority. Stardust lacks the cultists' distinctive "Sacremencho Stare", so she is instantly idetified as an other. There is no place to run, no police, no disguse; not even her childhood home is safe. The systems that should to protect Stardust are instead used to exert control.

Sucker for Love: Date to Die For offers a fresh perspective on cosmic horror from the lived Black experience. Stardust’s journey challenges entrenched systems of control with empathy and optimism, reinterpreting Lovecraft’s fear of the unknown and highlighting the power of compassion in overcoming adversity.

2024 Cdrama Year in Review

Overall Favorite Show:

Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

Funny, charming, sweet, warmhearted, tender, touching, clever, and just all around a delight. Was it perfect? No. Did it make me happier and give me more brain worms (of the good kind, not the RFK kind) than any other drama this year? Yes.

Favorite Character:

Mu Sheng/Ziqi from Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

This man is crack to me. Put a bunch of tropes Haro loves in a pot and stir them up, then add Ding Yuxi's sad baby boy yes and you get Ziqi aka 'this character was made for me.'

Zhao Yuanzhou my beautiful tragic demon boy who deserves the world. The epitome of ‘Do you understand the violence it took to become this gentle?’

Miaomiao and Ziqi from Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

Such a tender, quiet love that develops from a strong friendship into something more. I love that they never stop being cute, teasing BFFs once they hook up. The story that ties it all together in the last episode is so beautiful. I'm content knowing that even though they might not have cool powers any longer, they are going to live happily ever after. Everything that happened to them was real. 💖

Zhuo Yichen/Zhao Yuanzhou from Fangs of Fortune

In a word, gorgeous. The way pure hatred can transform into uncompromising love, two people who couldn't seem more different on the surface can find a singular understanding, and the way that love is sacrifice, but it's also taking on a burden for someone who has spent his whole life doing so for others (choosing someone who has never been chosen, and when the time comes, his soul sings and comes back to you).

Other runner up would be Xiaoyao/Tushan Jing from Lost You Forever, but they were on last year's list for the first season so.

This princess has some of the strongest character growth in the series, and definitely the best arc in season two. Just delightful to watch. Strong subversion of the evil SFL trope.

Nitian Erxing from Burning Flames

In a generally kind of overstuffed and simplistic cast, this devoted demon king stood out to me. Not just his cunty styling, but his nobility and surprising level of complexity.

If you bring in 2023 dramas that I watched in 2024, add in Wang Ye from I am Nobody to the above. He's such a mood, and he's very pretty. He was by far my favorite part of season one. Can't wait to see him again. .💖

favorite antagonist:

Princess Wanning from The Double

Not sure about favorite because I wasn't that invested in her specifically, but as far as 'best' antagonist, it was probably her. Legend says that Li Meng is still chewing the scenery to this day.

15 Day BL Challenge! Part 3!

Day 33: It’s toxic and I know it. Favourite toxic trope? (we don’t judge here)

As many people who follow me will know, I am a big fan of toxic ship, for better or for worse. I often times just find the dynamic more interesting, the way the character’s interactions more fascinating. I also enjoy trying to see if the show can make a justification that is even approaching believable. Bonus points if the show knows it’s toxic and never tries to justify it, I eat that shit for breakfast.

(The usual disclaimer that while I enjoy toxic tropes in fiction, their real life behavioural counterparts should be avoided.)

So with that in mind:

Possessiveness to the point of insanity.

While it’s one of my favourites, it has to come with certain conditions. I only want it if it’s the actual couple of show. If it’s the SML/SFL who is the possessive one, I tend to find it more pathetic than interesting. I mean where is the fun of being possessive of someone who isn’t into you. It’s only interesting for me if the LI is at least kind of into it.

I can’t not use MingJoe as an example for this. This is what I mean for this trope, at it’s finest. Ming is a possessive asshole. The narrative and Joe knows it and Joe is actually pretty into it. At least he is once he realizes that it’s actually him Ming is into and not Tong. Ming is kind of insane and maladjusted on the best of days, but do anything to threaten his Joe and he will completely give up the ghost and go full possessive insanely rich asshole on you. No one is safe, not even if his own family, if they threaten Joe.

The stalker extremely pushy love interest

It is cute in real life? No it really isn’t, but in fiction it’s a bit of a different story. This type of trope that can used a couple of different ways and I love them all.

Prapai is a stalker. I love him to death, I love his and Sky’s love story but he is a stalker and there is no two ways about it. Still I love their love story because in at least in fiction, you can try to justify it as is something the other party may need. Sky needs Prapai’s persistence (mostly because therapy doesn’t exist in the MCU but I digress). Sky need it because he clearly likes Pai almost from the beginning but his very understandable hang ups when it comes to relationships is getting in his way of expressing that and developing a normal relationship and since Sky won’t go to therapy, Pai will just stalk him in order to wear him down enough that Sky is willing to admit that he also likes Pai. Especially when you factor in how successful their relationship is once it gets past this stage and they are essentially equal partners.

Toh and Nuea are another version of the trope that I love, especially because it flips the trope in it’s head. Toh is the definition of benevolent stalker (if such a thing exists) because he is literally just happy to watch just afar and collect weird keepsakes. He doesn’t harbour any kind of belief that he even can take it any further much less that he should. Nuea is aware of Toh’s stalking way before he and Toh ever even have a conversation and, unlike with Sky, it is very obvious from the beginning that Nuea is unequivocally into it. He matches Toh’s freak perfectly and is in fact that one to push their relationship until Toh is finally able to take the last few needed steps for them to be equals in their relationship.

Hey friendddddddddddd thank you!! Its been the Mercy show for a minute now but before the wall toss heard 'round the simblrverse, she just came home from the most amazing lunch date with a man by the name of Sean Mahajan:

Sean was only married once and that ended in divorce. He never remarried. As he gets comfortable in this middle-life stage, he really hopes he can find someone to travel with and grow old with.

He's in therapy two times a week which has not only helped him endure the aftermath of losing his only child, but he has also closed chapters on his previous marriage and how he used football to cope. He learned his favorite color is green.

Speaking of football, he is a retired quarterback, forced into retirement from an injury. These days you can find him coaching high school and university teams. He's been asked to coach pro but instead he chose to be a champion for the mental health of SFL players

The weekly deposits from forced retirement are really fucking big.
