Hi, remember this comic? I don’t blame you if not, I haven’t been able to work on it for awhile. The last time I penciled a page was in January 2022, and chapter 13 of Valley of the Silk Sky has sat at 75% penciled ever since.
In the intervening time I spent 6 months in physical therapy (two rounds, somewhat different issues, the bulk of it focused on getting my drawing arm in working order again). And so VotSS has sat on my cork board, those penciled pages staring at me every day, waiting for the will to work on it to return.
Well, it didn’t return, so I did what you sometimes have to do as a creative professional, and decided to pencil the next page anyway. I can’t make any promises as to when I will actually publish chapter 13. But I do still very much intend to finish this book, and I’m hoping knocking the rust off will help me get it running again. Onward!

Next time I do one of those randomized characters memes I should throw in some characters from Narbonic. I think an increased quota of lady mad scientists and violent young women would improve most memes. Also Dave. Someone remind me.
#narbonic#you see when I do say the 14 Characters Meme I never can remember anything I like#so I end up just doing doctor who characters#but I do like other things!#characters from a universe with some element of weirdness generally seem to work best for randomized things#so either sff or just their lives are deeply weird#so webcomics are probably a good source to add people from#I made a long list of things I like in here and then decided to just go off and do the meme rather than spoiling all my good ideas in tags

Swoony Sapphic Romance Recs
Ever find f/f lukewarm? (It’s not you, it’s an industrial complex.) My intention here is to collect canonical sapphic rep that avoids the flat “girl meets girl” trope, where two women with doubtful chemistry are made to get together simply because they exist in the same narrative. I want media that will make me feverishly ship characters and spend at least 24 hours reeling from the brainrot in the aftermath. I don’t want to like a pairing just because they’re sapphic rep, I want it to be good and unforgettable. These lists are a wild jumble of genres, loosely organised (mostly novels, but I clarify when they aren’t), and in alphabetical order! I left out author names to avoid clutter. This is a living post and I will keep updating—please reblog or comment with your own recs if you wish!
⭐️: classics among sapphic media and/or criminally underrated essentials
Top tier best wlw romances: fluttery, swoony and angsty
in four, very loose categories
CONTEMPORARY
Bottoms (movie) ⭐️
How You Get the Girl
Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date
Kiss Her Once for Me
Love & Other Disasters
One Last Stop ⭐️
Saving Face (movie) ⭐️
She Loves to Cook, She Loves to Eat (manga/show)
The Fiancée Farce
XO, Kitty (show)
HISTORICAL
Annie on My Mind ⭐️
Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend
Gwen and Art Are Not in Love
Last Night at the Telegraph Club ⭐️
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo ⭐️
SCI-FI/FANTASY
A Dark and Drowning Tide
Arcane (animated show) ⭐️
Lucy Undying
The Midnight Lie ⭐️
Warrior Nun (show)
Youngblood (faced backlash for problematic content—check reviews before reading/supporting. Included here because sapphic romance itself is undeniably excellent.)
GRAPHIC NOVELS
Sunset Phoenix (webcomic)
Tamen de Gushi ⭐️
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All ⭐️
The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Solid romance but less angsty:
Bloom Into You* (ani/manga)
Forget Me Not
If You’ll Have Me (graphic novel)
I Kissed Shara Wheeler
Magan & Danai (webcomic)
Run Away With Me, Girl (manga)
She Drives Me Crazy
These Witches Don’t Burn
Bonus: SFF with excellent sapphic characters (not romance focused)
A Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Pirates* (graphic novel)
Gideon the Ninth ⭐️ (this is its own genre and absolutely gutting despite not being heavy handed on the romance, very emotional and will make you want to put a butch in a pillow fort)
On a Sunbeam (graphic novel)
Shera and the Princesses of Power* (animated show) ⭐️
Bonus: Literary fiction (little focus on romance but packs a gut-wrenching punch)
Blue Sisters
Even Though We’re Adults (manga)
Our Dreams at Dusk ⭐️ (manga)
The Impossible Love Life of Amanda Dean
Wandering Son ⭐️ (ani/manga)
*sort of girl meets girl but worth plowing through for various reasons, usually their importance to sapphic media or LGBTQ+ discourse in the plot (might get taken off the list with time as I add better options!)

@bigmeatpete69420 So, I love bookstores and buying books is often exciting, but then sometimes it doesn't really chip away at a reading slump, and I have to find another way to get back into reading. So here are some things that will get you reading (not necessarily books, but if you try too hard to skip to books straight away, you'll just make yourself anxious and frustrate yourself).
read some picture books. they're very fast, often very cute, and will remind you the sorts of things you like in a book: characters, dialogue, conflicts, themes. also you can look through a lot of them while you're at the bookstore to make sure you can find one you like to take home with you.
short story collections or anthologies: if you don't like one, you can skip to the next. if you're used to doomscrolling, there can be a catharsis in being able to move on quickly. or seek out flash fiction collections, if you need to look at a lot of things fast.
similar to that, go to one of the writing prompts tumblrs, and look through it until you find an interesting prompt. click through to the notes, and see what stories people have added to it; a lot of these are very short and will be quick, fun reads. if you're inspired, you can also write something based on one, just for yourself or to share, and that can remind you what you like in a story, too.
reading a webcomic can work really well if you're having trouble concentrating, because they're usually broken into very short segments. some types of comics are even designed to scroll through on your phone; you can go to Webtoon and read through Wayne Family Adventures, since you like flying things (Batman).
do you read fanfic? if you look up Elder Scrolls on AO3, I'll bet there's a least a couple things your speed, and if you leave comments on those stories most authors would love to chat with you about the lore and stuff. I don't know if there are official novelizations and tie-ins, but those can be a low effort place to start with books for any game/show franchises you like, since you already like the characters and settings.
look up rec lists for some specific topic you like, and see what people say about it. not if the book is any good or not, but how accurate it is, or how hilariously inaccurate. there are lots of fantasy books with fantasy dragonflies! I read one where people used them like ubers. reading books that aren't very good can be easier, because you don't have to feel guilty about thinking it's not very good, and it makes it hard to treat it like work when it's just a silly thing you're doing.
but if it would be easier to work through it, just because then you're making progress even if the book isn't so fun, you can find a list of books you meant to read, like every book that won a certain award, or the most famous books in a genre. you can also look for book bingos, which are sometimes geared towards making sure you read a lot of different genres or styles. your genre preferences easily could have shifted as you grew up, but it takes a while to notice if you're not looking for it. read some classics and feel educated, or read some bestsellers and feel connected to pop culture, that kind of thing.
you can also mark up books a lot with all your thoughts on them while you're reading, and it can make you engage more actively, or help you feel less frustrated if you're not liking the book. or, if you want to share your thoughts, a lot of people like to do readthroughs, and post their thoughts chapter by chapter on a dedicated tumblr. your friends/mutuals might have thoughts you didn't even think of while reading, and discussion can be fun. a book club might work in that context, too.
short genres of books (so at least you can get back to reading several books in a row) generally include: novellas, cozy mysteries, harlequin romances, "beach reads" (this is a bookstore genre typically), YA published prior to about 2005, old pulp SFF and penny mysteries, and series published by multiple authors. but if you're in a bookstore or library you can just look for things that are smaller and less intimidating if you end up not liking them much.
you also might want to go back and reread old favorites. what book do you remember not being able to put down, just zooming through it? what did you read several times in a row, or keep going back to? what kept you excited to see what happened next every chapter? what had your favorite character, scene, snippet of dialogue, macguffin, handwaved explanation, or goal? if you pick back up a book you know you love, it will help you remember how much you really do love reading.
Hello Mr Gaiman
I hope this ask finds you well, I don't know if you will have the answer to this and I do not mean to put any amount of pressure on you from asking it.
When I was younger I had a voracious appetite for reading. I would read any chance I got planes, car rides to school, in bed before going to sleep. I think ever since I have unfortunately had a smart phone I have been trapped in a vicious dopamine cycle of doom scrolling until I find something so abhorrent that I have to put my phone down to reset.
I want to read books again. I want to have joy I use to get from reading long told stories the world over.
How do I get motivation, where do I start?
Sorry and once again no pressure
Pete
Start in a bookshop.
I went to The Golden Notebook yesterday with one mission: to buy a book I wanted to read and hadn't read. Not one that anyone was expecting me to read and give a blurb for.
And then I put my phone away and made a cup of tea and had the best time reading my book. And I cannot wait to get to it.

Valley of the Silk Sky: "Extraction" - page 2
I'm sure I've talked about this before, but to recap: the Pocalo Valley is widely renowned for its advanced medical treatments for all sorts of conditions, including trans medicine. When Razi references hormone treatments, that's what xe's talking about.
Also, the last panel is referencing the Valley of the Silk Sky short story "Medicine; Run," though you don't need to have read it to follow the events in "Extraction."

If you're looking for achillean SFF comics and stories w/ transmasc leads I've got a few! I think my writing tends to be a bit cozy. My protagonists are often in their late 20s-30s, and finally in a position to follow (or find) their dreams.
Fell Swoop is a space fantasy romance and is complete! Webcomic version available on Webtoon, Tapas, and an edited graphic novel PDF w/ 20 extra pages + bonus content is at my store! (corresponding art: lower left image)
Sunlit Silence is a fantasy adventure (solarpunk), ongoing, on Webtoon, Tapas, and Patreon! (top two images) There's romance in this one too, it's just not as central (yet) as the others listed here. This is my coziest series at the moment, and there is more than one trans character in the main cast. Bard & Messenger (working title) is a fantasy adventure romance novel, currently with beta readers. Do you want a story where the bard gets the guy? Working to release this year! (lower right image) He Took Me to the Stars is another space fantasy romance, set in the Fell Swoop universe, and I'm starting work on it for patrons first as I work though concept art, trial pages, etc. (center image) These stories are generally adult though not very explicit. If you want NSFW art of these characters or those from my main series, Spidersilk, it is available on my patreon.
