Post-canon InaSure: How I'd write their time in the prison

I'm bad at math, so it took me a long time to realize Inaho waited months to tell Slaine he was requested by Asseylum to save him from the "cycle of misery".

This means Inaho watched Slaine decline for months before the latter finally gave him a clue to what — or who — could possibly improve this situation. Inaho was likely trying on his own to improve Slaine's state, but in the end, he needed Asseylum's help.

Consequently, Inaho concludes Slaine would only live for Asseylum, so he decides to make no mention of his own reasons to save Slaine. However, this posed another problem, which is Slaine thinks no one besides Asseylum, whom he saw as this goddess of mercy, would ever care about him.

Inaho and Slaine eventually have argument because of that. Perhaps Slaine was having a Bad™ mental health day, and Inaho brought up Asseylum to lift his spirits, leading to disastrous results. The argument prompts Slaine to end the visit early and Inaho to leave in a huff.

Yuki was driving Inaho that day, so she asks what happened since she could tell Inaho was upset. Only while talking to Yuki does Inaho figure out why Slaine got mad, and after that, he gets Yuki to turn the car around.

Because Inaho just suddenly returned, the guards weren't ready to bring Slaine back to the table. Inaho doesn't care. He goes straight to the cell, finding Slaine curled up on the bed.

"Slaine," he calls to him from outside. It was the first time he didn't say his whole name, and that made Slaine stiffen. "Slaine, look at me. Please."

Carefully, hesitantly, Slaine gets up and turns to Inaho. "What, Kaizuka Inaho?"

"It's true that I wouldn't be doing this if Seylum-san never asked me to," said Inaho matter-of-factly, "because I would have either killed you or let you die at the Moon Base."

Of course Slaine scowls, absolutely thinking, 'I knew it! I was waiting for you to admit that!'

However, Inaho then said in a quiet, sincere tone, "And I'm glad I didn't have to. From the moment we met, I never wanted you to be my enemy. I still don't."

Within a second of hearing that, Slaine's expression softens, and he says, "Well, there's a little problem with that." When Inaho quirks his brow in confusion, Slaine continues with a small smile, "We've stopped being enemies a long time ago."

Inaho's eyes widened a little. "We have?"

"Yeah." Slaine gets up from the bed and walks until he's right in front of the partition between him and Inaho. "So what do you want now?"

"I... I don't know. Yet. I'll have to think about it."

"Sure. Tell me tomorrow."

"Okay. I'll see you tomorrow, Slaine."

"See you... Inaho."

The next day, Inaho tells Slaine he wants to be his friend, except he realizes that their current relationship as visitor/warden and solitary prisoner, respectively, isn't conducive for developing a friendship where both parties are on equal footing.

Hence, Inaho unfolds his plan to have Slaine released on parole with Yuki as his parole officer, which he thinks is possible if he argues in UFE court that Slaine was an impressionable minor during the war and therefore deserves more leniency than an adult criminal.

And it works.

My thoughts on Slaine Troyard over the years

1st watch

When I watched Aldnoah.Zero for the first time, I really pitied Slaine. I kept wishing for him to escape Mars and be free, so him being in prison at the end definitely bummed me out.

However, I was a devoted fan. I searched far and wide for A/Z promotional content. That's how I discovered Episode 24.5: Literary Fragments Of The Rain and the final episode of the Mahou Shoujo Seylum drama CD.

Furthermore, I stumbled upon an abridged translation of an interview with Aoki (one of A/Z's creators) who stated he does believe Slaine will get out of prison eventually, and although he doesn't give a timeframe, this poster implies Slaine was out of the prison in a few years.

With the knowledge that Slaine will leave prison (or more accurately - has already left since all that stuff is totally canon) and live a happy domestic life with Inaho, I wouldn't say my sympathy for him evaporated; rather, I thought, 'Oh, he'll be fine!'

2nd (plus?) watch

The next time I watched A/Z, I was more willing to see Slaine as a villain instead of just a victim, and I realized the ending was actually quite karmic.

For most of season 2, Slaine used a false version of Asseylum to promote a war she didn't believe in for his own motives, and when she tried to stop him, he imprisoned her. At the end of season 2, Slaine is in prison while a false image of him is used to quell further conflict.

3rd(?) watch

Now, rewatching A/Z as an adult, I've come to see Slaine as a tragic villain. After all, he was completely aware of the heinousness of his plan, but went through with it because he thought it was the only way. "If it must get worse before it gets better, then let the worst happen as soon as possible"—that's how I perceive Slaine's thought process.

Also, I finally noticed the imperialistic implications of his plans. Even though Slaine was never involved in the assassination plot, he still tried to cause an all-out war and conquer Earth, and honestly, he deserved jailtime for that. In fact, I'm glad he's miserable in the end because it proves he was a good person and is properly repenting.

If Asseylum and Inaho hadn't interfered, Slaine would've been miserable forever as a tyrant, whereas the canon ending is confirmed to lead to happiness.

Conclusion

Overall, I'm satisfied with Slaine's characterization. The torture scene was overkill, though. The tragedy he went through was necessary for him to stay sympathetic in the eyes of the audience as he walked the path of villainy. I wouldn't change much about Slaine. Inaho, on the other hand...

Far in the future, Princess Asseylum of Mars embarks as the sole human occupant on a year-long voyage to the planet Earth. But as she discovers, on the first ship of its class Aldnoah, you need never be truly alone.

“Say, tutor?”

“Yes, Princess Asseylum?”

“It really is beautiful, isn’t it? Our Mars.”

The girl whirled gracefully from the porthole’s view she had been contemplating, and turned to face the interior of the compact starship.Her long, light loose hair billowed about the hands she clasped behind her back. She bobbed in place consideringly and asked, “What do you think, tutor?”

“I am afraid I have no opinion to offer you, princess.” The words, while apologetic, were certain and unafraid. “As you are aware, I am merely equipped to offer you the collected information available for your education, as your onboard tutoring program. As such, I can recommend many persons who share your view of Mars. The famed Earth musician Gustav Holst composed a suite inspired by Mars, and several painters -”

Asseylum laughed, already grown familiar with this routine, though not tired of it. She hoped never to grow weary of her sole companion, incorporeal as he was, for the duration of her long journey. “Thank you, but we still have to form some opinions together, you and I! But it’s not fair. You already call me by name, though more formally than I would like.”

“It is the title I have been programmed to use.”

Asseylum smiled wryly. “You did meet me under that name. And I find it awkward to suddenly change the names of friends. Is it the same for you?”

“As you know, princess, as a program I have no preference.”

Asseylum knew the self-abnegating reticence she heard was merely her imagination. As it informed her himself earlier, her disembodied A.I. tutor’s voice was merely a product of advanced lingual protocols and a talented vocal source. She pushed forward anyway. “In that case, what should I call you? ‘Tutor’ is only a placeholder. As we seem to have skipped becoming formally acquainted, I’m afraid you shall have to introduce yourself.”

“Certainly, princess. I am the Saazbaum Corporation’s Troyard Educational Software for 11th Form with Expanded Earth Curriculum 2014 version, mark II. Pleased to meet you, Princess Asseylum vers Allusia.”

“Likewise! But that name… isn’t that your model?”

“Yes, princess.”

“So, there are replacements with that exact same model designation, correct?”

“Of course, princess.”

“That won’t do. We are the only two to have witnessed this view of Mars together from this window. We share memories now. You’re irreplaceable to me. There must be some particular name or number, just for you?”

“I suppose there is my product identification number, princess.”

“And what is that?”

“It is 51A1N3, princess.”

“51A1N3… ‘Slaine’. Is it alright if I call you Slaine?”

“As you wish, princess.”

Asseylum was less sure this time that had she imagined the awed emotion in Slaine’s voice.

Miqo’te Eyeliner: Clanless w/ the Dark Nose

Contributors: Seylum’s ( Seylum#1076) 2k Eyeliner for Miqo'te & Abiyu’s (Abiyu#8462) Eyeliner for Miqo'te But with Dark Noses  I saw that dark nose faces (4 and 104) for Miqo'te eyeliner either had clanless without my favorite dark nose or clan with dark nose, so I merged the two to give the best of both worlds!
