I've watched a spate of sexbot movies, and it seems to me that they often want to be a metaphor about how men want meek submissive women and women want to rise up and stab men in the throat. Which is a fine narrative, classic scifi stuff.

But ... it's sort of not a story about a sexbot at all?

It's like when they do a movie "about" genetic engineering, and then a genetically engineered monster kills everyone, and yeah, sure, that's fun, but in no way is this about the actual perils of genetic engineering, nor the steps needed to do it safely, nor the impacts that we would expect it to have on society.

And I'm not sure what I want out of a "proper" sexbot movie/story, but "sexbots are bad because sexbots are people too with their own interiority and dreams and ambitions" seems like a weird and (probably) untrue Aesop.

Maybe the sort of story I'm interested in is a guy who buys a sexbot, and she can be anything that he wants her to be, and for a time this is fine, but there's something about the unreality that gets to him, the way that she'll eagerly agree to anything he asks her to do, the way that he can change her settings so she'll push back against him but then this is just him pulling the strings again. And eventually he wants something "real" but he's had his expectations and thinking warped by living with this sexbot for a year, and there's a series of encounters where it's clear how much he's made it impossible to successfully date. Something about fantasy vs. reality. Something about social drift. Something about blurring the lines that exist in your own mind.

I do generally endorse the credo of "well, if that's what you want to see, write it yourself", and maybe I'll do that, but I think there are a lot of pitfalls, and I'm not in the mood to write something miserable right now.

(One significant pitfall for a movie is that the sexbot is played by an actor, and it's immediately got this veneer of reality to it. And one of the other, related problems, is that if we see something look like a human, we immediately empathize with it.)

Book Review: Annie Bot

I was recommended Annie Bot by Sierra Greer after one of my sexbot posts, and this review is going to be a bit brief, because it's a relatively short book, and I think I had more problems with it than the number of thoughts it provoked in me.

This is a review about a book about sexbots, so content warning: sex.

The book follows Annie, a sexbot, as she grows in emotional maturity and intelligence under the ownership of Doug. There's what feels like an extremely extended opening dialogue at the start where the ins and outs of sexbot ownership are explained to the audience, which immediately made me lose some faith that it was going to be a worthwhile book: it was a classic case where I thought "show, don't tell" would have been some great advice to follow.

The book is about misogyny and abusive relationships far more than it's about artificial intelligence. It's about being trapped by a man who values you for sex and being punished for exercising freedom. This is interesting enough for me, I guess, but I also wanted more, and there were pieces of it that felt ... arbitrary? Like they were happening for no particular reason, with no particular commentary? Parts where I wondered "what is this saying about Doug, about Annie, about relationships, artificial intelligence, or gendered relationships?", and where I'm skeptical that it is saying anything, rather than just presenting fodder for me to munch on.

The structure of the book also felt very odd to me, and for this, I need to get into spoilers: Doug gets a second sex bot, and after a big fight, she goes on the run, taking the other sex bot with her. She's afraid she's going to be torn apart and killed, and feels empathy for the less developed sexbot, and they go to the home of a lab tech that Annie hopes can remove the tracker chip ... but he doesn't want to help them and lose his job, and her owner Doug shows up, and then the whole last half of the book returns to the status quo they'd been at before.

They go to therapy together, they open up to each other, their relationship stabilizes and to some extent grows as Annie deals with some of the trauma that Doug has put her through. She starts reading books as a way to have her own internality, she gets introduced to "wandering" and they get a dog together, she goes out and spends time with Doug's friends, pretending to be a real woman ... and then, in the last handful of pages, Doug wants to introduce her to his parents, to have her as a "true" woman, to have kids, etc. And then he releases her from the obligation to love her, and it changes something in her, and she takes off at the next opportunity, slipping out into the night, which is the note the book ends on.

I ... kind of hated this? The narrative structure feels so weird to me, the moment where she flees from his control the first time is a moment of self-actualization, she's trying to remove the tracking module from her, it's agentic. But the second time, at the end, the echo of going away, the only reason this seems to happen is that he accidentally removes a directive from her, having not realized that it was load-bearing. There's a whole subplot of her learning programming and engaging in self-modification that essentially comes to nothing: in the end she doesn't learn programming, never changes anything about herself except in the normal human way, and isn't responsible for stripping out the Doug-centric parts of herself, it's him that does that.

So I think this maps pretty poorly onto abusive relationships. There are, certainly, elements of how Doug controls Annie that map to abusive relationships: he tells her what to do, where to go, needs to authorize every purchase, and has a complex about it to boot, maybe because his previous human girlfriend cheated on him (which possibly happened because he was controlling even before that). She's there for his pleasure, built for sex, for pleasing him, for wearing the things that he wants her to wear, cooking the meals that he wants her to cook. And she carves out a private inner life without him, one that she tries to cloak from him, to present as palatable to him.

But in real abusive relationships, you don't get out of them because someone says the wrong thing and accidentally releases something in your mind. I mean, I assume not, anyway.

I guess the novel implicitly takes Annie's side as a conscious being right from the very start, just by having her be the narrator. And there are a few things in the setup that I found to be a bit ... manipulative? Annie always speaks of "simulating" orgasm, rather than actually having one, and of course the mind goes to "faking an orgasm", which is laden with connotations. Annie still wants these simulated orgasms though, and they still provide her with some kind of relief that I guess is distinct from an actual orgasm. But then these orgasms can't happen without a penis inside her, and yeah, okay, metaphorically I get it, she is built in such a way that the penis is central to her sexual experience. But why would you program a sexbot that way? There's even some mention that Doug tries to get her to masturbate and she can't simulate orgasm, and ... why? The metaphor raises this question of practicality that it doesn't have an answer for.

I think it's a well-written book on the prose level, but also, Doug is a more interesting character than Annie, with more depth and contradiction to him, an asshole but one that I wanted to poke at to see how he ticked. Plotwise, I found it to be sort of a mess, particularly the ending, which felt like it came from nowhere. There are way too many descriptions of clothing for me, but it's part of the thematic elements, so I'll swallow my own personal disinterest in the subject.

But I did also read it in one sitting over a layover, and it's rare I do that with a book, so I'll give it credit for holding my attention. (This review brought to you by plane wifi.)
