happy mollymauk week, everyone! as it's threeleaf day, I thought I'd use this time to spread the word about my fan novel trilogy to any enthusiasts who might not be aware.
The series is called “Devil & The Details”, but it’s more commonly referred to as “Devilverse” for short. The first two books are complete, and the third is currently being serialized.
Linked beneath the cut, we have an epic about Kingsley getting into new trouble on the seas, his captaincy of the Mollymauk, and ultimate rise to the throne of Darktow. While both Molly and Lucien make appearances — along with some other members of the Nein — the story is chiefly about Kingsley and his efforts to forge a unique path for himself. Since this is also a story where all three make an appearance, this trilogy potentially carries the dubious honor of being the longest threeleaf fic on ao3.
The goal of the series was to explore some of the things referenced by Taliesin about the ideas he wanted to explore with both Molly and Kingsley's existences, such as the notion of "soullessness" in mermaids and the philosophical concept of the tabula rasa. The overarching story is also about healing from different kinds of trauma, grief, breaking cycles of abuse, myths and realities of "the pirate's life" and "the resistance" as a concept, accountability, and how T4T love transcends petty things like death and fate. Think Black Sails meets Baldur's Gate with a Candide rising.
CW for: canon-typical violence and gay sex,* gore, mild body horror, frank discussions and depictions of slavery and genocide, cannibalism, suicide (especially in book III), and mentions (but not depictions) of sexual assault.
*There are also two short stories in the series that trend more towards the NSFW/PWP side and are about King and his love interest in the novels; their promo post can be found...
UPDATE: post deleted, flagged by tumblr censors since it's about two trans people in love, lmao.
The novels are written in what could be loosely described as historical fiction style, with other heavy influences taken from 90s anime and camp fantasy. They follow a standard fantasy trilogy setup, with the first book being more plotty, the second more character-driven, and the third currently shaping up to be a mix of the two.
BOOK I: Crowned Teeth (or, An Offering Revoked) [complete, 130,670 words]
We find Kingsley in dire straits after being betrayed by his crew and sold into slavery in the Hespet Archipelago. Breaking out with nothing to his name except a pair of enchanted pistols and a ragtag handful of other escapees, Kingsley vows to see himself avenged upon the leadership of the Tempest Fang.
BOOK II: Wine-Dark Sea [complete, 161,010 words]
With the Fang defeated and Kingsley trying to make things right in their absence, Fjord and Jester accept a quest to uncover a lost relic near the island of Glintshore. With the archdemon Maxima and the Abyssal Plane's intrigue unfolding in the wings, the three of them discover that there is more than what meets the eye.
BOOK III: Home to Roost [in progress, projected 300,000 words]
At long last, Kingsley and the other ex-Revelry members that make up the Diamond-eaters are sailing on Darktow. The long awaited showdown with the Plank King looms, and the archdemon Samiel plots to take the throne from Graz'zt. To his great misfortune, Captain Tealeaf catches the eye of both of them. To protect his new friends and ensure his path to the throne, Kingsley has to call on unexpected allies.
This is very much a labor of love on my end; King, specifically, is very important to me for many reasons. In case we never got the opportunity to explore his life and times on-stream, it was imperative to me that he get at least one story to call all his own.
If you want a proper pirate epic to tuck into, this is it!

Look at them part two
Cyril Darkholme
Just as it's rare for a white-haired character to manipulate fire, it's also rare for a blond-haired character to manipulate darkness. The one example that I can think of is Touhou Project's Rumia, who surrounds herself in a dark orb. The logic is that if a flame-haired character ought to manipulate fire, then a dark-haired character ought to manipulate shadows. Cyril Darkholme's more like Rumia in that he's blond and manipulates darkness.
In fact he tends to create solid shadow constructs, ranging from weapons to force fields. In order to do so he has to absorb light, in fact he's pretty useless at night or in any dark area. He does the same with fire and electricity to varying degrees that he can cause brownouts at any point, also like Rumia he also dresses in black. When I think about it this way, Jean-Louis pushes the stereotype in a way by wearing red, having dyed red hair and manipulates light.
Cyril Darkholme kicks back the stereotype with his blond hair, since it's already pretty rare for a blond character to manipulate darkness. The one example who does this a lot would be Touhou's Rumia, I have a double take with Marvel's Cloak where he is so swarthy he might as well manipulate shadows himself. To be fair, there's a black woman who manipulates light and her name is Monica Rambeau. A similar one would be DC's Kimiyo Hoshi, but neither of them are white so they are excused in a way.
Cyril Darkholme is both blond and white, manipulates darkness and dresses in black.
John Zelensky
He's a Goth and as you expect, he tends to dress in black. The real difference is that he both listens to Goth and punk music and plays in a Goth band himself, if he has the spare time to do so. His police/superhero look is a toned down version of his punkier get-up whenever he has his casual days or when he's not at the police department. It's his version of the corporate Goth look, where Goths have to tone down their look to better fit into certain work environments.
So his superhero outfit is pretty his corporate Goth outfit, with his punkier outfits being what he wears when off-duty or in a band. I actually prefer that artists would take cues from actual Deathrockers, punks and Goths to get a better idea of what I think he wears off-duty. More in the lines of bands like The Clash, The Damned, Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy and Sex Pistols for that male Goth-punk look, or even the Ramones for another matter to some extent.
Admittedly his superhero/cop outfit is based on a ballet outfit, since I'm not that big a fan of the tactical look and I can't do tactical outfits that well either. The only real advantage that wrestling leotards and ballet outfits have over superhero costumes is that they're actually being worn during physical activity, in the case with the former in combat even. You could say that truth is stranger than fiction.
It doesn't get any stranger than what Goths and punks wear in the real world by the way, in some regards it's a good deal more threatening than any superhero outfit would ever be.

Bucci gang accidentally saying "Love you" at the end of a phone call?
Bucci gang accidentally saying, “ love you” at the end of a phone call!
Dang this is actually a really cute ask and this was so fun!
I tried to make this like a choice fan-fiction if that makes sense. You can read wether or not you responded with, “ I love you” back or stayed silent! Hope this was good!
Basically there’s like a good ending and a bad one lol enjoy!
Includes: Bruno, Abbacchio, Fugo, Narancia, Mista, and Giorno!
Bruno:
It was the first time you had ever heard him say those words
You and him both were very flustered, and you could tell by the awkward silence on both ends of the phone.
After a bit of silence, ( and a bit of giggling on your hand end)
He ‘coughs’ in order to signal for your response, to which you respond with:
If you stayed silent:
“ Ahem, alright then, goodnight Y/n”
He’s honestly a little disheartened when he doesn’t hear anything from your end of the phone
In all honesty, he had hoped you would have responded with a simple, “ thanks.” Or something
When you decline, he sighs
If you tell him you love him:
He laughs, not a full hearted laugh but a quiet one
“ Ah, I’m glad to hear that.”
He smiles on the other end of the phone, very content with your response
You two talk only for a few more minutes before he hangs up.
He’s actually very very happy about your response!
And all night when he’s trying to sleep he’s thinking about it.
Y/n you have broken Bruno Bucciratti.
Abbacchio:
Okay okay okay
Out of all of them he’s probably the most surprised he let it out
Like he’s been keeping this a secret for a long while and he just let it out
Unlike Bruno, he probably actually keeps speaking
He tries to pretend it never happened and maybe you would just forget.
Which does not happen
He sighs and, he was about to hang up
If you stayed silent:
He’s actually quite happy
Maybe you didn’t hear him?
Maybe you forgot he even said those words
However, he’s kind of sad
He wants to tell you but he’s just to frightened to
I mean think about it, almost everyone he cares for goes away or ends up passing away :(
He won’t deny he loves you, but he’s still hesitant in telling you
If you tell him you love him:
He’s shocked
Like actually
Freaking SURPRISED
“ Aha… uhm thanks.”
He’s like really awkward for a few moments
Unlike Bruno, he declines like immediately after and just sits there
He’s so shocked man
But I will tell you, happy
He might be shocked but he’s happy
Fugo:
He just declines
He doesn’t say anything
You don’t even have time to tell him you love him back lol
He just turns off his phone
And starts yelling at himself
Narancia:
Okay but honestly
It probably wasn’t even on accident
Nah this was on PURPOSE
He just wanted to get a reaction out of you
Hehe
He’s trying so hard not to burst out laughing on the other end and wait for your response
If you stay silent:
He’s kind of heartbroken
That’s not the reaction he wanted at all
And on top of it he’s embarrassed now too
He laughs it off like it’s nothing, and when you hang up he’s just all gloomy
He turns on music and forgets about it but trying to confess to you has been eating at him all week
And when you don’t respond it just hurts
Hopefully you make it up to him in person
If you tell him you love him:
He’s a giggling mess
He’s so incredibly happy
Finally things won’t be awkward with you two and he can finally express and act calm around you
The rest of the call is just him laughing and teasing you
When really he’s just trying to hide how flustered he is
Bonus: when you two next meet in person he gives you a kiss on the cheek
Mista:
He’s trying to pretend like he didn’t just say what he thought he said
“ Ahaha, Did I just say that?”
“ Yes Mista, you did.”
“ Oh…”
He’s a blushing mess
To the point where the Sex Pistols come out and start teasing the crap outta him
If you stay silent:
He would laugh it off
“ Hehe anyway…uh goodbye Y/N”
Just kinda sits there after the call
He didn’t accidentally say, “ I love you” for nothing right?
Clearly fate wanted you two to be together right?
Maybe…
He was doubting it
And that was a bad thing
If you tell him you love him:
He’s ecstatic
He’s actually so happy
Like he’s laughing and smiling
“ hehehe”
He’s a giggling mess
He’s practically jumping up and down
When he hangs up he’s bragging to the Sex Pistols
“ told ya so”
Then that starts an argument between all of them
Imagine a non stand user seeing that OML
Giorno:
Honestly
Giorno would be so smooth with it
Like he would just say it and not think much of it
He’d just continue what he was saying until you speak
Unlike the others, he doesn’t need to hide the fact that he’s flustered because he’s not
He just accidentally said he loves you what’s the big de-
Wait
He just said he loved you
If you stay silent:
When he hangs up, he’s a little disappointed
He tries not to let it bother him too much
But in reality
It does
But he tells himself he expected it
He tries to convince himself that it was what was bound to happen :(
You better make it up to him I stg
If you tell him you love him:
He smiles and says he’s relieved
Because he truly is
He thought 100% that you wouldn’t respond or think much about it
So he’s super super happy
He doesn’t say it of course but he does feel it
It’ll be a bit before he truly warms up to you o and such but he will be forever grateful that you said you loved him back
Thanks for reading!

Re: the post u reblogged about couples actually enjoying spending time with each other/having in-jokes & whatnot. What would u do w that for John/Chas 👀👀
UGH anon i can't believe i didn't answer this very important question before, and esp bc i think maybe you were hoping for a full fic and not just. this random assortment of headcanons, but, obviously i have thots:
one of my fav John & Chas comics canon scene is when they goof on some rando at a bar bc he looks like a character from spinal tap, from which i infer: they probably watched it together, or else must've discussed it (w nostalgia given their own ~touring days) enough that john knows chas'll get the reference. HENCE i have inferred that they have at least somewhat similar tastes in pop culture and i assume that holds true across canons.
comics!john is also someone who canonically referenced dr who, star trek, and star wars, ergo, a BIT of a (sci-fi) nerd, which you wouldn't expect looking at him HOWEVER. chas knows 👀 and probably teases him about. not that chas is like. COOL but i see him as having idk more basic tastes. Airport fiction, etc. Stuff he can consume on his (minimal) downtime as a cabbie/dad/chauffeur/bodyguard/personal chef.
BUT anyway, obviously, i think they watch enough movies & TV together (or separately, but have similar enough tastes) that they have the same reference bank so in show canon i assume it’s like, john makes a lot of random snarky asides, chas laughs at it, and zed has no idea what they’re laughing about and after the first few times she asks, decides she really doesn’t want to.
additionally, show canon is, when john is in town, they go to bars & music shows together (or i guess at least bars where live music is played? but either way john keeps him out ALL NIGHT and renee obviously hates it).
I think John maybe sometimes forgets that Chas isn't 100% aligned w him on stuff? I just recall TV john having that rambly convo w the bartender at the end of the [aired] pilot where hes talking about the sex pistols vs the ramones & then chas shows up [looking like an absolute DILF in his three layers of clothing in ATLANTA of all places] and im not sure if this actually happened but i can just picture john like, trying to rope chas into that discussion & chas being like, 🙄.
Another john/chas friendship is just based on its longevity. chas has obvs known him a long time & remembers john in his "cutting up his t shirts & safety pining them back together " baby punk disaster stage, and/or his "frontman in a truly terrible band" thing, so even when john is being all broody (esp when john is being all broody) and/or the worst, chas can't completely divorce that from skinny, messy, but in some ways probably happier or at least less traumatized teenaged/early 20s y/o john.
Relatedly, comics!chas has nothing but disdain for Mucous Membrane, despite being their roadie. (i’m assuming he took the job bc he thought it would get him girls tbh.) And he's not afraid to mention it to john, even when john HAS not asked. Just full on roasts him about it, and john takes it so personally! A DELIGHT. any area where chas has a SLIGHT upper hand on john & relentlessly exploits it really just balances them and thus i’m always a fan.
theres a bit in show canon (I'm p sure it was in the New Orleans ep?) where john, chas, & zed are in the car & have to go talk to the police about something, and john starts throwing out different backstories they can use w the implication that they're the ones he & chas have used in the past, and chas is just like nodding along, and idk it's a small moment but it speaks to the fact that post-fire & pre-zed, john & chas DID engage in at least some spooky shit shenanigans, just the two of them. or maybe their ~bits go back to the MM days, or when they were even younger & john was out there just conning people out of things? Either way, EXCELLENT friendship history vibes.
(I actually just had kind of a sad thought which is, the fun hanging out & drinking in dive bars while listening to local bands stuff was a pre-fire/arthurian spell thing, bc after that chas may have mostly been hanging out w john bc they were doing ~spooky shit stuff)
also i’ve said it before but show!john & chas GO GROCERY SHOPPING TOGETHER IN THE PILOT and we DON’T get to see it and it’s NEVER referenced again and this is BIPHOBIA even more so than the fact the camera drifts when john kisses him in the bar
#chastantine#sorry anon this is a mess of disjointed & somewhat repetitive thots#i'd much. rather have written a fic about it but i'm still having trouble w writing so alas#john constantine#john constantine kissing dudes 2k14#chas chandler#he's a bear. and he's a daddy. he's a daddy bear

The intriguing shared history of Horror and Punk
On the surface it should be pretty clear why these two have been fitting mates. Both have progressive themes and ideology, and both have a rebellious energy to them. The 1980s in particular saw a wave of anti-establishment acts like Black Flag, Minor Threat and was the era of Britain’s ‘video nasties’ on the horror side. Both horror and punk would have, and are considered outsider culture. In an interview with Revolver, Glenn Danzig (former singer of horrorcore pioneers, The Misfits) had this to say,
“I related more to those kinds of movies. Of course, there were movies I hated because you only get to see the monster in the last two minutes of the movie. But I saw the correlation between society and the monster and why there was a need for a monster.”1
The Misfits logo, inspired by 1940s film serial ‘The Crimson Ghost’
Danzig’s words here echo the sentiment expressed by many that punk and horror are adjacent to one another. Horror reflects the current society’s fears throughout the decade whether it be atomic bombs, teenage rebellion, sexual liberation, and so on. Punk, meanwhile notes society’s fears, and stands opposed to those in the way of progress. Both art-forms have been created and performed by outsiders. Directors like Sam Raimi or John Carpenter had to make their films independently outside of the ‘studio system’ and punks like the Sex Pistols who’ve never preformed ‘proper’ music with ‘proper’ backgrounds, similarly worked outside the typical systems. Both often had immediate and vital messaging about societal woes.
Halloween (1978) was made for just $300,000. A low budget film for the time, as a result, wardrobes and props had to be purchased second-hand or pulled from whatever they had already. The film went on to make $70 million.
Even towards the beginning of punk’s roots, there was the emergence of horror punk, a subgenre that meshed the themes of punk and aesthetics (and storytelling) of horror. Bands like The Misfits and The Damned were at the forefront of this wave. Artists like Ice Nine Kills have featured whole albums inspired by horror films and horror punk has spiraled into further deviations like psychobilly (a fusion genre of horror themes and rockabilly)
Alongside ‘The Misfits’, ‘The Damned’ were some of the first of the horror punk subgenre: “We got our name from two 1960s films: Luchino Visconti’s The Damned, about the Nazis, and the horror movie The Village of the Damned. It was perfect for us...Audiences hated us. Motorcycle gangs chased us. It seemed like half the country wanted to beat the shit out of us.” 2
In film meanwhile, there were stories like Return of the Living Dead, Green Room, and Uncle Peckerhead that feature punks or punk bands in their narrative or ones like Evil Dead 2 or Night of the Demons that exhibited more of a broad aesthetic ‘energy’ or punk ethos to them. Despite featuring a punk band as his protagonists, Jeremy Saulnier (director of Green Room) felt his movie was a follower of the latter philosophy saying:
“I know a lot of filmmakers who try to make quote-unquote ‘punk’ movies,” said Saulnier, stopping through Chicago on a publicity tour that also tends to confine him to one building, albeit under less stressful circumstances. “But most bog themselves down in ideology and punk references left and right. [‘Green Room’] is about taking the energy, aesthetic and propulsive qualities of the music and using them in support of a genre siege thriller.”3
Even books and graphic novels like Robert Brockway’s Vicious Circuit series or Dan Watters Home Sick Pilots chronicle the ongoing history of the two meshing cultures.
A lot of these same films feature punk artists like Pet Semetary’s song of the same name by The Ramones. Stephen King himself was a noted Ramones fan, and they come up in discussion in the book proper. Connections like this tie both communities even further.
Home Sick Pilots by Dan Watters stars the titular fictional band, and meshes punk rock with genre fare like haunted houses and kaiju cinema
Both sub-cultures experienced a golden age of sorts in the broader counter-culture of the 1980s as this was the era of Reagan, Thatcher and the previously mentioned ‘video nasties’. Conservative governments were the norm in the west, and moral policing had reached a zeitgeist. Games like Dungeons & Dragons were treated as scapegoats for societal issues. Artists of all kinds were displaying their anti-authority messages.
While a sillier take than Night of The Living Dead, Return of the Living Dead begins with poorly stored toxic waste and ends with the military calling in a nuclear warhead. Environmentalism and anti-war messages have long been punk staples.
A film like Evil Dead 2 meanwhile displays its punk ethos not through it’s characters or its story but through its DIY approach. Sam Raimi made his original Evil Dead film for almost nothing with the help of family and friends. It also featured an absurd amount of fake blood and was subsequently banned in the UK for many years becoming one of the legendary Video Nasties. It’s this anti-establishment and DIY approach that has bonded many of these two genres creators and put them on a collision course with each other.
Ultimately, punk and horror are like two parallels in art, sound and film – both reflecting the swirling chaos of modern life, by its fear or by its failures. Its creators and their art, whether figures like Sam Raimi or bands like The Misfits, becoming folk heroes for the destitute, the downtrodden, and the oppressed in society.

Julien Temple Musicals: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS (’86) and EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY (’88) By Raquel Stecher
Director Julien Temple has built his filmmaking career showcasing creative types. Musicians are his forte, although he’s also made films about poets, filmmakers and other artists. Best known for his music videos, he’s directed artists such as the Rolling Stones, Depeche Mode, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Billy Idol, Van Halen and Paul McCartney. He became interested in filmmaking when he discovered the work of French filmmaker Jean Vigo, whom he would later direct a biopic about. He began working alongside the Sex Pistols and made his debut feature film The Great Rock ’N’ Roll Swindle (’80) about the band’s tumultuous break-up.
Temple had a front row seat at a time when music was revolutionizing culture but was also interested in how the music of the past influenced the present. Among his films are two outliers, a pair of films inspired by Temple’s love of Hollywood musicals: ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS (’86) and EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY (’88). An homage to the early days of rock ‘n’ roll, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS was an adaptation of Colin MacInnes’ 1959 novel. Set in 1958 during the time of the Notting Hill race riots, it explores the cultural revolution of the time, when jazz was falling out of favor, rock ‘n’ roll was making a scene and teenagers were being recognized as a major influence on popular culture. Eddie O’Connell stars as Colin, a photographer who falls in love with fashion designer Crepe Suzette (Patsy Kensit) and gets caught up in the local music scene. The film features performances by Sade and Davide Bowie, two musicians Temple had previous directed music videos for.
According to the website Supajam, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS was at the time “the most expensive British film ever made.” When the shooting wrapped, Temple was fired. He had no involvement with the final editing, which was handled by three different editors. The end result was a musical that strayed from Temple’s vision. In an interview, Temple called the production “a half-nightmare, half-dream” and said that he wishes it would have come out differently. The film was a flop and bankrupted British movie studio Goldcrest Film International. Temple goes on to say in his interview with Supajam, “It was strange being accused of destroying the British film industry… for many decades, it seemed to be circling Pluto, but it seems to have made its way a bit closer back towards Earth these days.”
The film caught the eye of Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. Temple is quoted as saying, “It turned out the Jackson family were fans, particularly Michael and Janet, who used to copy the dance sequences as it played on their cinema screen.” Temple went on to direct two music videos for Janet Jackson. “When I Think of You” pays homage to ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS urban setting and “Alright” is a throwback to the golden era of Hollywood musicals and features cameos by the Nicholas Brothers, Cab Calloway and Cyd Charisse.
When Temple left the UK to work in the US, he made another go at the musical feature film with EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY (’88). This science fiction romantic comedy musical hybrid starred then real-life couple Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum in their third picture together. Written by Julie Brown, Terrence E. McNally and Charlie Coffey, the story follows California girl Valerie (Geena Davis) who, in the midst of romantic turmoil, is visited by three furry aliens: Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans. The aliens are given a makeover to best resemble humans and they cause a ruckus in the Valley with their new look.
The movie is chock full of 1980s esthetics and slang, making it a nostalgic delight for anyone who lived through, or just loves, that era. It even includes a cameo by the mysterious lady in pink Angelyne, who was herself a precursor to today’s celebrity influencers. The film also serves as a throwback to 1950s science fiction films like Forbidden Planet (’56) and Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (’56). The trio of aliens learn human behavior and language from watching classics on television like Gun Fury (’53), Rebel Without a Cause (’55) and The Nutty Professor (’63).
Given his newfound reputation, Temple had a difficult time finding a studio or production company for the film. Warner Bros., MGM, 20th Century-Fox and New World Pictures all expressed interest but eventually turned it down. It was picked up by De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, which was set to distribute, but they filed for bankruptcy shortly after filming. The movie didn’t make a splash at the time, however it’s gone on to earn the cult classic status it so rightly deserves. EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY served as the inspiration for the Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea music video for “Pretty Girls” released in 2015.

Book Review: The Bastard's Betrayal (Scandalous Scions #1) by Katee Robert
Well, this was fun! I love a darker romance every now and again, and with fake identities, bullets fired, a kidnapping plot, and feuding mafia families who could rival the Montagues and Capulets with the decades of blood they have stained on their hands, The Bastard's Betrayal delivers on steam as well as back-stabbing. It's a lovers-to-enemies then enemies-back-to-lovers good time! The book begins when Rose Romanov, mafia princess and future heiress, learns that her vanilla civilian boyfriend isn't as vanilla as she thought he was. He's Dante Verducci. A notorious family rival. And he's been working undercover to probe her for secrets, for weaknesses, the whole time! Rightfully pissed, and still reeling from the betrayal, she ends the relationship--with pistol in hand. Then she consents to an arranged marriage with the heir of the Capparelli clan, Romeo. An act which will aid in solidifying a new family alliance. Dante isn't happy when he catches wind of this plan. In fact, he is downright incensed. Inflamed. Determined. He refuses to let Rose go through with it, to wed any man who isn't him because they have something, because she is his, he knows it in his bones. So what does he do? Absconds her from her own wedding. Yep, he kidnaps her right under her family's nose! After all, what is a man in love if not a fool who throws every bit of sense (and in this case, life expectancy) out the window to stake claim to his woman? I haven't read the O'Malley series this branches off from, but I landed in this book just fine. Murder attempts, light kidnapping, hate sex, etc. are all on the menu so if that isn't your thing then you might as well cover your eyes and scurry away now. If it is something you like from time to time, however, sit back, let your wrists be bound, and enjoy the ride! Overall, I liked the power struggle that existed between the Romanov, Verducci, and Capparelli families. I do think we could've gotten a better glimpse into the mafia world itself, though. That was hinted at, glazed over, rather than flushed out. I think Dante and Rose have enough spice that enemies-to-lovers fans will be happy, however. Rose is not afraid to pull punches (or triggers) and is feisty to the core, though she can be surprisingly vulnerable when she wants to be. Dante, on the other hand, is devoted, dangerous, seductive, and possessive in a way that's only hot in fiction. Possessive men in real life, I give a hard pass then shove them out the door. Possessive men in fiction, I flutter them my "come hither" eyelashes and prepare to swoon. Makes no sense, I know, but, hey, I don't make the rules! Dante's softer traits outweigh the possessive part of him, anyway, so it all balances out. Robert also sets the stage for future books to come. Rose's sisters are all fierce in their own way, none of them afraid to dive into the life, taking names, threatening to bust up a few faces, so I'll be interested to see what dangerous liaisons they get caught up in themselves. 😏 Many thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC!
3/5 stars

Today we remember the passing of Arthur “Killer” Kane who Died: July 13, 2004 in Los Angeles, California
Arthur Harold Kane Jr. was a musician best known as the bass guitarist for the pioneering glam rock band the New York Dolls. Kane was a founding member of the Dolls in 1971 and remained an integral part of the band until he was forced out in 1975, shortly after the departure of Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan. In 2004, after decades of estrangement from Dolls singer David Johansen, Kane rejoined the surviving Dolls to rehearse and play a reunion concert in London, which was the subject of the 2005 documentary New York Doll. In addition to his bass playing, Kane was known for his subculture fashion sense and for uttering original aphorisms in his uniquely toned voice.
Kane's nickname, "Killer", was inspired by the first article written about the Dolls in which the journalist described Kane's "killer bass playing". Kane also said that it was inspired by the adversary of the 1930s science fiction hero Buck Rogers, a villainous character named Killer Kane.
Kane was born in The Bronx, New York City, the only child of Erna and Harold Kane. Arthur was close to his mother and her aunt, his Aunt Millie, who used to like to listen to Elvis records. The first word that he learned as a young child was "record". When Arthur was seventeen, his mother died of cancer (leukemia). His father was an abusive alcoholic, and when he quickly remarried, Arthur left home for good. He graduated from Martin Van Buren High School in Queens. He first played bass in the band Actress along with other original New York Dolls: Johnny Thunders, Rick Rivets and Billy Murcia.
After returning home after spending about a year in Amsterdam, Kane had been noticing a charismatic figure around New York City with avant-garde hair and clothes who would shortly take on the name Johnny Thunders. Kane decided to approach him one day in front of a West Village pizzeria to ask him if he wanted to get together sometime to jam on their instruments. Shortly thereafter they all met at a rehearsal studio, where they had booked some time, located in the West Thirties area of New York City. Kane later wrote in his autobiography that as he was about to enter the studio space he heard Johnny's original style of playing electric guitar: "It was raunchy, nasty, rough, raw, and untamed," adding, "His sound was rich and fat and beautiful, like a voice." Kane had originally envisioned himself as being the guitar player of the band but in that moment offered to pick up a Fender bass to accompany saying, "I know exactly what to play with what you're playing on guitar. Let's hear what it sounds like." Adding, "And it sounded great to us. We had hit the nail on the head."
Killer Kane was known for his outrageous outfits such as one-piece body stockings, large bow-ties, and thigh-high, neon-colored platform boots. Kane created many original and infamous looks by scouring shops in London, "combing through Amsterdam's Waterlooplein flea market during all of 1970", and "various Brooklyn thrift shops". Mixing pop art with music, the Dolls sought to create a persona as "larger-than-life rock-and-roll comic book superheroes", or as if they were a band from outer space – concepts that were expanded upon in one form or another not much later by other bands such as KISS.
In addition to his signature bass sound, Kane had a unique way of performing on stage. As rock photographer Bob Gruen explained, while playing bass Kane "moved a bit robotically, kind of like a giant Frankenstein." Throughout his tenure with the Dolls, Kane dated a succession of atypically tall women, including Stacia of Hawkwind.
The Dolls put out two studio albums, 1973's New York Dolls and 1974's Too Much Too Soon. The Dolls influenced several bands that came soon after with the emerging Punk scene such as the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, and Generation X; and were a precursor to 80's Glam metal bands such as Mötley Crüe, Cinderella, and Poison.
Their drummer, Billy Murcia, died from an accidental overdose while they were touring England in 1972. Plagued by bad management, drug and alcohol abuse, and cliques forming within the group, the band broke up in 1975 – Kane's last experience with the band that year being a shouting match in a trailer court in Florida.
In the early 2000s, Kane met filmmaker Greg Whiteley through his work with the Latter-day Saints, and the two became friends. Whiteley commented that all Kane ever talked about was how he wished that he could somehow get the Dolls back together. Whiteley started shopping around the idea of doing a film on Kane's life. Coincidentally, in 2004 Morrissey—who for decades had been a high-profile fan of the Dolls—offered Kane an opportunity to perform a reunion show with the surviving Dolls (David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain) at the Royal Festival Hall in London as part of his Meltdown Festival (former band members Johnny Thunders died in 1991 at age 38, and Jerry Nolan in 1992 at age 45). When Kane called Whiteley to ask for a ride to the pawn shop to retrieve his bass guitar, Whiteley asked if he could bring along a camera. From there Whiteley filmed Kane's experiences preparing for the reunion, rehearsing with the Dolls in New York, and reconciling with Johansen, culminating in two sold-out shows in London; which for Kane was all a fulfillment of a nearly thirty-year dream. Whiteley's footage resulted in the 2005 Sundance featured documentary, New York Doll.
On July 13, 2004, just 22 days after the reunion concert, Kane thought that he had caught the flu in London and checked himself into a Los Angeles hospital, complaining of fatigue. He was quickly diagnosed with leukemia, and died within two hours. He was just 55 years old.

2021 IFFBoston Part 4
Last week was the kick off of virtual 2021 Independent Film Festival Boston. I’ll be covering the festival (which I’m an alumni of and a big fan of), as it continues to Sun. May 16, periodically over the next week. Check out Part 1 here, Part 2 here and Part 3 here.
Thurs. May 13:
Marvelous and the Black Hole is a coming of age comedy about magic, featuring Rhea Perlman. Alas I didn’t catch it.
Miss Poly Styrene
Only a day after I caught the music doc The Sparks Brothers, there’s another music doc. Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliche documents punk singer Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex and it’s co-directed by her daughter. I can’t say I was that familiar with them before this doc. Although, they were a part of the Rock Against Racism concert, which was documented in last year’s White Riot (see my review here). The band fell in with the British punk movement of that era, but I actually thought they were more like the Blondie than the Sex Pistols. The doc is co-directed by Styrene’s daughter Celeste Bell, who narrates and is seen re-visiting many of Styrene’s noteworthy locations. Styrene (who died in 2011 at age 53 of breast cancer) was bi-racial and used her music to rail against inequality. But there was a complexity to this doc in that its not so much an objective portrait of Styrne, but really about a daughter trying to understand her mother, who suffered from bi-polar disorder while Bell was young, didn’t have the best relationship with, but re-connected later in life. Its almost as if this doc is Bell working through some issues and coming to peace about her mother. There are a number of interviewees (her own bandmates and members of The Raincoats, Sonic Youth, Bikini Kill and more) who are heard but not seen over archival footage. Still digesting this as its very different than other docs that hit you with an immediate reaction after viewing.
Fri. May 14:
Shelby Duclos and Tyson Brown
First Date is a coming of age comedy about a teen’s first date gone awry. Shy teen Mike gets the chance to take girl-next-door Kelsey out, but he needs a car. After getting conned into buying a ‘65 Chrysler the whole night spirals out of control between criminals, cops and strangers who want the car. When I read the program notes about this film, I was intrigued. It had been a while since we had something like this type of movie, where a series of misadventures occur over the course of one night. The problem with this was that it was trying WAY too hard. It was aspiring to be a Quentin Tarantino mixture of crime and comedy...and failed. The program referred to it as “Superbad meets True Romance”. To tell you the truth this wasn’t even as good as the 1991 teen movie Mystery Date (the one where Ethan Hawke takes a girl out and finds himself dealing with criminals who think he’s the older brother). After Pulp Fiction, there were a ton of Tarantino rip-offs. Most were bad but every once in a while you had something like Go, which was highly influenced by Tarantino, but felt fresh and original. I had hoped First Date would be in that vein, but it was a major letdown.
Next: There’s some big ones coming up at the fest in the last few days.

So, if Proscuitto isn't your favorite, then which one is? And I don't necessarily mean La Squadra, or in terms of writing potential. What I mean is, which character out of Vento Aureo is your favorite, in terms of anything from personality (even if everyone's morally grey) to best/most interesting to write about to most interesting to analyze as a character?
I like Prosciutto lol. The joke was I'm not attracted to him as in a character I'd like to fucc or a character that is my type. I realized some fans have strong crushes on characters and can only write for them that way. Imagine a bit like self-inserts or OTPs, which I don't strongly have.
I also don't tend to write for my favorite characters only, because to me writing comes as having a story idea and what characters would fit it best. As a result I'm very ship or character agnostic in writing, and can end up writing on anyone.
For example, no other Vento character would fit the backstory I gave Prosciutto, bc in my head the story was best told through him. I feel Prosciutto is the big brother type, and that's a popular trope for a reason imo: it's a very comforting and versatile trope bc a big brother character easily interacts with others.
Basically my writing is detached from the characters I like and more about what stories I can tell or what ideas I can explore, especially if it's a story that would surprise someone. I will write for any characters that fit that story; some character tropes are easier for me to write about than others but I'll explore whatever characters the story needs. I also like to write cross-genre a lot, so it is really about coming up with cool stories (admittedly I get frustrated when my writing skills don't match up my ideas, but I'm a DIY writer and using fanfiction to grow as one). Sometimes my favorites don't get the coolest stories either haha. (In my drafts and I have too many, Formaggio gets my favorite backstory, and he's not a character I particularly like). Sometimes I grow to like a character as I write about them; the more you understand of someone the more you love them. (That happened to me with Ghiaccio)
As a general rule of thumb in characters I like to write about: the otherly. It really fascinates me. In stories this can take various shapes: aliens, artificial intelligence or robots, misfits... so anything that is different from you bc the fun is in exploring what that means and what it tells us about ourselves. If you liked any of my fics, I'd recommend to read Object of Desire... I plan to rewrite it one day as multichapter/novel style but it is a clear example of how I love the otherly and how I realize that in stories. (You are welcome to come back and tell me who the otherly was haha-- I also experimented with writing styles, prose and poetry).
Now for my favorite character in Vento; it's Melone. Mostly because his stand is an artificial intelligence stand and a highly sentient one. Stands have usually been like a shadow; more like limbs to a character than actual realizable characters themselves. In Vento we see two exceptions in BabyFace (I suppose the juniors) and Mista's Sex Pistols. The thing is Babyface Jr causes no damage to Melone if the stand offspring dies (unless that very specific case with Giorno returning the bit of the stand back to him); while if Mista's case if the stand gets hurt so does he. It begs the question if BabyFace could survive with a dead Melone? So BabyFace is the only stand so far fully autonomous, with a will that can overrule the user requests (he goes against Melone a lot) and overly sentient. And it's a stand that learns based on experience (it is machine learning if you will based on data, be it Melone's , the mother, or experiences it has in the world). It's the coolest stand I've seen in JoJo, and it makes me wonder how can someone like Melone get the only stand to be fully autonomous and so intelligent (imagine if you found sentient alien life)? If I were a Speedwagon Foundation scientist, it'd be the stand to study; the stand to end all stands. (Followed by Valentine's stand in part 7).
Stand aside, again I love otherly, Melone fits into the psychotic pretty boy trope; which I also like: he's attractive (even though I prefer more muscular Melone from fanarts) and very smart and very quirky, and multi-layered (he's all sorts of fucked up and beyond redemption but makes for good psychological exploration). It's a bit like where our minds break that's something interesting to learn there, and that's why messed up or unhinged characters like Melone or Cioccolata are interesting in fiction.

THE POSITIVE & NEGATIVE; Mun & Muse - Meme.
fill out & repost ♥ This meme definitely favors canons more, but I hope OC’s still can make it somehow work with their own lore, and lil’ fandom of friends & mutuals. Multi-Muses pick the muse you are the most invested in atm.
My muse is: canon / oc / au / canon-divergent / fandomless /
Is your character popular in the fandom? YES / NO / Depends. I think fans usually love Sonia or hate her.
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom? YES / NO / IDK.
Is your character considered strong in the fandom? YES / NO / In some aspects.
Are they underrated? YES / NO.
Were they relevant for the main story? YES / NO.
Were they relevant for the main character? YES / NO /
Are they widely known in their world? YES / NO.
How’s their reputation? GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL / Verse-dependent. Mostly good, unless Despair-verse or post-Neo World Program/post-SDR2 for canon verses or Talentswap!AU for my Ultimate Mafia Boss AU. Sonia's reputation is pretty terrible in these.
How strictly do you follow canon?
I do the best I can, considering that for most Danganronpa characters, there's limited information unless they're a protagonist. Considering DR, depending on the timeline of Sonia's class, takes place in various settings, realities, and states of mind, it can be a challenge to keep everything consistent. While I don't do a lot of threads that take place strictly in the SDR2-verse, where I do try to keep events canon to how they unfold in the game and as precisely as Sonia is presented as I can, other verses tend to be a bit more canon-divergent in order to fill in character building gaps that the game and anime don't really offer. The biggest change I tend to do is that unless I'm writing a thread of Sonia's arrival or first year at Hope's Peak or during the Neo World Program of SDR2, I don't tend to write many of her slang or word mix-ups. While Sonia reads and writes her 30+ languages better than she speaks them, I still believe she picks up on foreign languages easily and learns from her mistakes. She's a smart person, considering all of her talents mentioned in the SDR2 game alone. I also tend to disregard some of Hajime's free-time events with Sonia, particularly in terms of the hero legend and how she would allow the fabled hero to immediately marry and rule with her. My Sonia, for the most part, is a self-rescuing princess (and has a tendency to want to rescue everyone else too!).
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.
Is your muse looking for a friend and/or significant other who's just fascinated by everything they do and will support them no matter what? Someone who doesn't care about where you come from, your family, your looks, your socio-economic status but only who you are? Someone generous, kind, gentle, optimistic, smart, well-read, well-mannered, and will always be your muse's biggest cheerleader? Then your muse will definitely want to meet Sonia Nevermind, Hope's Peak Academy's Ultimate Princess and occult and serial killer-lover extraordinaire. She's poised to inherit a European country that thrives under absolute monarchy, a ridiculous amount of wealth and prestige, her own military, and more homes and assets than one person, and one family, really need. But get her talking about her favorite books/movies/TV shows, particularly horror and romantic dramas, and she'll be ecstatic. She loves exploring haunted locales, questioning the motives and methods of serial killers (real and fictional! I hope you've seen Friday the 13th, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, etc. Is your muse Team Freddy or Team Jason?), and experiencing a 'normal' lifestyle unbefitting of a royal. Novoselic has no amusement parks, so your muse can really wow Sonia by introducing her to her first roller coaster! While she can't actually participate in Freemasonry or murdering people (Despair and Talentswap verses aside!) due to her title, she's still quite intrigued by it all. And like any proper Novosonian, she adores her chocolate and her wine. She's got a massive sweet tooth, perfect for her usual sweet and kind demeanor.
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?)
She's not terribly edgy or sarcastic in most of her verses. It's very easy for Sonia to get duped by someone, as she's quick to consider people friends unless otherwise shown differently. She's very poised and polite due to her upbringing and doesn't often act on every impulse she has or speak her mind, especially if her opinion is divisive or negative, unless she trusts your muse. It's easy for her to accept friends into her life and far more difficult to accept romantic love, as she's frequently facing people who love her for her looks, title, and apparent purity, which frustrates her. She doesn't want to be put on a pedestal, she simply wants to be treated normally. She also doesn't get into too many fights, especially if she's been slighted. This is not a muse who's going to throw a punch, but she's excellent with firearms of all sorts. Pistols? Check. Rifles? Mastered them. Rocket launcher? Her favorite! And of course, she learned how to drive a tank before she could drive a car. If you're looking for a meek and shy muse to write with, Sonia's not that type. She's reserved in some things, but if your muse is really out of line? She'll call them out on it. She also has a tendency to want to lead in everything (it's a struggle for her to give up control, she can't help it!) and is a workaholic unless your muse distracts her.
Sonia has a fair amount of Rich People Problems. If that doesn't interest you or your muse, you may not enjoy interacting with her. But she remains as humble as she can about it all. She's terrible at putting herself first and admitting feelings for anyone, automatically assuming the person she cares for wouldn't want to be close to her, platonically or romantically, because of how complicated her life is as a future monarch. There's a lot of press, official appearances, and times she has to be a Princess before a person. She never wants to feel like a burden to your muse, which can sometimes come off as passive. But in life or death situations? Her bravery comes through.
And let's not go into how her Despair verse could be potentially triggering to some muses and/or muns. Sonia's absolutely disgusting when in Despair: lots of gore, lots of torture, lots of death, lots of blood, and a fair amount of sex with bad intentions. She's a gross human being (and has to deal with all of that in a post-Neo World Program verse!).
What inspired you to rp your muse?
I've been roleplaying for a pretty long time (not necessarily all on tumblr, but for awhile. I'm old!), and I've played action/fighting muses, know-it-all/brainy/witty muses, and muses who border on the mean girl trope with a heart of gold. But I've never really played a sincerely kind and good person. I tend to prefer writing female characters (I'm just more comfortable writing women than men most of the time!) and I've always had an interest in royalty and European history since I was a child. I played and watched Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc originally and while I found it fun, it didn't really hold my attention for long. It took 5-6 years or so for me to try out SDR2, and upon getting introduced to Sonia it was just a perfect fit. I love how kind and open-minded she is, how much she believes in the best of everyone, and how her interests in the occult, serial killers, anime, and dramas are a stark contrast to her royal upbringing. So many royal characters are complete snobs with no interest in commoners, which was never the sort of muse I wanted to write. But I loved the idea of Sonia's fish out of water situation of being the only foreigner in her class (and likely most of the school), who's just so happy to be there even though she gets various customs wrong and is just plain weird due to her personal interests. Additionally, I have a strong interest in horror, the occult, and serial killers myself, so it's been fun incorporating my thoughts on what Sonia would like outside of what the game and anime offered.
What keeps your inspiration going?
This might be corny, but it's Sonia's innate curiosity about the world and everyone in it. Admittedly, I'm not terribly up to date on current and popular anime (and I've only played DRV3 once, so I don't know those muses as well, and I never completed that game's Talent Development Plan), so it's hard when I don't always know the franchise of the other muse Sonia's interacting with, but she's still so fascinated about others and is inclined to ask questions and take on new experiences. But when I'm feeling stuck on inspiration, I'm returning to books, movies, and TV shows. For Sonia specifically, I watch and read a lot of historical and royal-focused dramas, as well as horror and classic literature. I also follow blogs featuring royal history and modern royal coverage (though when it turns too gossipy, I tend to cringe!) for plot ideas.
Still, it's the hardest for me to interact with other muses whose muns automatically assume I'm familiar with their fandom, especially when it's popular. I tend to do a fair amount of apologizing in that case, as most of my favorite anime are considered old or classic at this point.
Some more personal questions for the mun.
Give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice? YES / NO.
Do you frequently write headcanons? YES / NO.
Do you sometimes write drabbles? YES / NO.
Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES / NO.
Are you confident in your portrayal? YES / NO.
Are you confident in your writing? YES / NO / Most of the time!
Are you a sensitive person? YES / NO.
Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?
Not terribly. In general, if someone doesn't like my portrayal, I question why they're following me (especially if we aren't writing together). I'm much more the type to respect someone's space if they decide to unfollow and/or softblock than want criticism of my portrayal. Of course, it's different if I'm writing with someone for awhile and we have multiple threads and character development, I'm a little more open to criticism but likely won't change my portrayal based on it.
Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?
I do! In general though, I tend to prioritize threads and IC asks over OOC, starting with what I've got muse to write with first. I have anon turned off and so I don't really get a lot of random questions about my muse anymore unless I've posted a meme asking for muse headcanons, but when I do get them, I try to answer them to the best of my ability.
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?
Not really. It's okay to disagree with my headcanon, that's totally valid! But if it gets to the point where I'm being told how to write my muse, I get annoyed. When I write with a mun, I accept their headcanons in our threads, no questions asked. I prefer the same courtesy with my muse and their headcanons too.
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?
Doesn't really matter to me. My general assumption is, is if someone disagrees with my portrayal, they likely won't write with me, follow me, or accept ask meme submissions from me.
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?
We probably aren't roleplaying together. They likely either don't want to write with a Sonia or my version of her, and that's ok! What isn't ok is gossip and anon hate. I've turned off anon for this reason and won't turn it back on unless I need to (for example, a mutual I trust wants to send something on anon IC). It's a significant weight off my shoulders, not dealing with OOC anon rudeness.
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?
Sure! No one's perfect. The only one that bothers me is different spelling for US English and UK/AUS/CAN English. I'm from the US and it's just easier to write in that, so I don't get anything wrong.
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?
I like to think so! I'm pretty easygoing and understanding of things like hiatuses, no writing inspo, etc, as long as I'm told that's what it is. Of course, I have my preferences for writing style (I don't do much one-liners or crack RP, just not my thing. I write a lot and try to avoid purple prose as much as I can!), but otherwise I like to plot, to wing it, coming up with new AUs and ships, etc. I also like chatting fandoms and such OOC as well! Admittedly I'm not great when it comes to mental health struggles, as I go through them myself and while I'm pretty high-functioning, RP and tumblr is my escape from my career and horrible stuff IRL, keeping me grounded and such. I like roleplaying, chatting fandoms and fun things, and just having a good time over here and on discord.
That’s about it, congrats for filling out!
