Book conservators have always bound books to extend their lives. Our preservation staff at Harvard Library still do! Here, a woman sits by a book press, sewing leaves with thread to make a book block that could then be bound with a more durable material such as leather on a binding board.

For the book, once I had the colour palette I wanted I then collected together all my trims and notions that worked in the palette. If I couldn’t find what I wanted I dyed, painted and sprayed fabrics buttons and studs. Then took it one step further and sprayed the handles of these scissors too! Coming up on the final stages of a project that we’ve been working on for a very long time. The emotions wrapped up in the release of checking off a box in a spreadsheet that says this is DONE and moving on is a strange mix of surprise, exhaustion, and elation that manifests in laughter and tears. What a strange thing this act of creation is when examined in retrospect. There are still plenty of those boxes on the spreadsheet to check off but now we can see the end of a project that has consumed every waking moment (and quite a few non-waking moments) of the last two years of our lives. Not gonna lie… the next projects are already on the shelves ready to go. The beautiful, terrible, wonderful, never-ending cycle of inspiration, all-consuming passion, and creation. Back in 2016 I spent two days with @katyadegrunwald shooting the still-life’s for my book - the next few posts are the ones that didn’t make it into print but I love them. Katya is very exacting and waits until everything is just so and takes just one shot. Before the shoot I laid out how I wanted the objects to be on boards then each one was moved onto a table for Katya to shoot - all were taken with natural light which gives a very special quality to the images.
