hi yk ur “seventeen as reductress headlines” gif thingy? i saw a tiktok that was basically the exact same as the first part of it, with the same titles for the same pictures and im not sure if that’s plagiarism or not, but i just wanted to let u know if case if it is (https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSdaaKapo/) there’s the link for it and im sorry if it’s nothing and i just wasted ur time
ahh i've never made a post popular enough to have my work stolen before!! :')
i'm jk lol. how disappointing. even though it's a silly little shitpost, i did put a lot of time into making it. i don't think i would've minded if the poster had linked back to my work as their inspiration, but i guess that was too much effort?
i looked into it and it doesn't seem like tiktok would be willing to take it down based on their copyright policy, unfortunately. :/ but i appreciate you letting me know.

Reduce, Reuse, Reductress
In today’s world, feminist blogging is becoming an increasingly popular source of activism, giving women both a sense of individual agency while nurturing a network of community. In a time where most female-oriented blogs come in the form of fashion, sex, or makeup advice, women’s satire online magazine Reductress.com has reclaimed such familiar tropes as their comedic own. Being hailed as the “feminist Onion”, founders Sarah Pappalardo and Beth Newell have taken a new parody to popular women’s magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Vogue. The website adheres to the same general aesthetics and formatting as these other blogs, keeping the playful stock photos and clickbait of contemporary blogs, but replaces anything of substance with absolute sarcasm. Through the use of comedy, the website has provided a space for women to discuss taboo subjects and ridicule gender normativity by exaggerating and highlighting both. At the surface, many headlines appear as simple one-liner jokes, but beneath is a discussion of intersectionality and resistance to the dominant culture of women in the media. The About section of the website best summarizes their intentions: “The mission of Reductress is to take on the outdated perspectives and condescending tone of popular women’s media, through the eyes of the funniest women in comedy today. Also, we want people to think we’re pretty.”
The website not only satirizes the way women are portrayed and treated by the media, but uses feminist writing to discuss the shortcomings of feminism itself. Articles like “We’re Piercing My Baby’s Tongue. Here’s Why.” and “Powerful Women We Refuse To Critique In a Meaningful Way So We Can Call Them Badasses” take a stance on “white” or “mainstream” feminism in an effective, yet subtle way. The latter article specifically critiques popular female figures such as Amy Schumer or Kerry Washington while simultaneously critiquing the audience who praises them. The article cites one prominent feminist, Malala, the Pakistani education activist, saying “WOW! Such a Badass! Also, who is this?” By refusing to address the long-term complexity of each powerful woman, the article sheds light on the sincere lack of knowledge surrounding the meaningless label ‘badass’ associated with feminists globally. This, among other articles, addresses the role privilege and hype play in mainstream feminism.
In 2016, turmoil at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, a popular improve and sketch comedy organization, caused dichotomy in both the comedy world and society at large when many male comedians rallied in defense of the alleged rapist who was banned from the organization. In response, the female writers at Reductress, many of whom are themselves associated with UCB, responded by dedicating their entire landing page to articles solely related to the topics of rape and sexual assault. This manifested in headlines like “I Anonymously Reported my Rape for the Anonymous Attention” and “Is It Technically Rape If I Have to Explain To Him What Counts as Rape?” In the latter, Nicole Silverberg writes “ The process of reporting my rape nearly destroyed me, but it was all worth it—just to see my name, “21-year-old woman,” emblazoned in newspapers next to the words, “may have had two beers that night.” The readers find themselves cringing every time they laugh because it’s good writing—for feminism and for comedy. Above all else, it illustrates the truth of just how ridiculous it is to victim-blame women of rape and rape culture.
Comedy as a whole is becoming an increasingly popular way to demand taboo issues be noticed, gendered or otherwise. Once a joke is made, the subject is inherently elevated to a position of authority. That is, the thing being ridiculed is placed on a pedestal. Once it is on that pedestal, it can be manipulated, analyzed and interpreted by the audience at large. This is precisely the reason the women at Reductress can discuss rape or white feminism or the wage gap, but still keep us entertained. Satire has the ability to expose these issues by exaggerating them, presenting to its audience just how insane some notions truly are.
This form of satire in and of itself is what Keller has dubbed an act of “playful activism”. It does so in the sense that it targets a mainstream audience and entertains them, differing from contemporary blogs such as Seventeen Magazine Project by addressing the playful things and the serious topics simultaneously. It’s the very nature of satire. It’s marketed to the mainstream in the sense that you don’t have to be a feminist (necessarily) to find the articles funny. The content is feminist without overtly saying so. In doing this, it allows for women who are still figuring out their views on such taboo topics to play with their own version of activism. It can, and indeed does, often function without the label, taking on a more subtle, but just as effective third-wave form.
Ultimately, Reductress remains a unified collective of writers, advocates, and comedians occupying an important space—the blog. The agenda is both humor and feminism, addressing real issues in a whimsical and funny way. While many find that invalidating to the cause, others find humor to discuss women’s issue and challenge norms. Comedy, particularly of this type, provides a safe space for women to discuss women’s issues without the discomfort that discussing them without humor might.
