Remembering Our Heroes.

When this time of year comes around you can feel the excitement and unrest in the air, people anxious to feel the sun on their shoulders, children ready to be free from the bondage of the school year, fathers nationwide blowing the cobwebs out of the grill, but this weekend in particular means so much more for many Americans.

Many of us take extra time this weekend to remember how we arrived here, and the hundreds of thousands of brave souls who made it possible for us to do so under a blanket of safety, security, and freedom.

I am a veteran. My father, grandfather, great grandfather, and many more in my family are veterans. I work with veterans, I have neighbors and friends who are veterans, and I'm sure I pass ten or more vets a day who are unannounced and under appreciated.

This weekend is not about me, or my father, or the neighbors and friends I can say thank you too and shake their hands.

This weekend is about those who made the ultimate sacrifice for millions of strangers, those who unselfishly and without hesitation put themselves between evil and oppression for you and I, because they loved us and never even knew our names.

These brave people, these heroes we speak of far too infrequently, left it all on the battlefield for us, and asked for nothing in return.

They left behind spouses, parents, siblings, and children. They left a void in the world that a brave and beautiful soul once filled, and they did so because they could, and they would not have it any other way.

While we get to enjoy this weekend and all that comes with it, the smell of cut grass and bbq, the sound of our children giggling in the backyard, the warmth of the sun and the sounds of nature coming alive after a hard winter, REMEMBER that so many no longer have that privilege. They did this for us, for you, for me, for every person and every generation that comes after them.

NEVER ever let the memory or sacrifice of these fallen warriors fade from our minds and our hearts. It is only the sacrifice of those brave heroes that allows us to be here, and anyone who says different is ignorant to the rich history of selfless service and patriotism that made and kept us safe and free in the greatest country on earth, the shining light on the hill, the altar upon which we will worship, these United States of America.

Say a prayer for them, say a prayer for the ones they left behind, and remember that our freedom comes with the highest cost, and it is paid for with the blood of the greatest Patriots the world will ever know.

May you forever rest in peace, thank you.

Today's #matriarchymarch is the amazing Hannah Szenes. Hannah was a special ops executive and paratrooper of Mandate Palestine for the British Army during WWII. The group was comprised of Jewish volunteers whose mission was to organize resistance against the German forces, and to aid in the rescue of allied personnel. Hannah was a Hungarian who immigrated to Nahalal and joined a paramilitary group that would later lay the foundation for the Israeli Defense Forces. In 1943 she enlisted in the British Army's Women's Auxiliary Air Force and began her training in Egypt. A year later she and her colleagues parachuted into Yugoslavia to join a partisan group (communist led resistance), to aid in the rescue of Hungarian Jews being deported to Auschwitz. However it was discovered that the Germans now occupied Hungary, and it was deemed too dangerous to continue with the rescue. Despite this, Hannah and her colleagues decided to continue on alone. They were arrested at the Hungarian border, and her British transmitter was discovered. She was taken to a prison, stripped and beaten for three days, loosing several teeth in the process. Her captors wanted the codes for the transmitter in order to find out who these three prisoners were and how they could find and trap others like them. Hannah was resolute, and so was sent to a prison in Budapest where she would continue to be interrogated and beaten for information. She only revealed her name. In October of 1944 she was charged and convicted of treason, and on November 7th she was executed by firing squad. In 1946 her diary was published in Hebrew. In 1950 her remains were brought to Israel and burried in Jerusalem. After the Cold War she was officially exonerated by the Hungarian military court. Service Learning - Blog #3

My experience volunteering at a soup kitchen, The Gathering: Running Rebels, will be a memory I will never forget. The hours I was able to put in while volunteering at this location, I was able to really learn and appreciate the different people I worked with. Volunteering at a soup kitchen really allows for the community to come together. Whether the people were rich or poor. Everyone is there to help out those in need.

One of the individuals I volunteered with was someone I will surely never forget. This individual’s name is Jerry (the man pictured above) and I believe he is from the area himself. It was mentioned by one of the other volunteers that he comes every single morning he can to help out, even when he does not have much himself. One of the times I went, before my car accident, Jerry came over to me and said, “you better fix that headlight young lady!”. Jerry is extremely noble and one of the kindest people I have ever met.

When volunteering in a place you may not be familiar with, or the neighborhood is not as nice, you might find yourself stereotyping either people or the community. Working at a soup kitchen helps tremendously by getting rid of those stereotypes and/ or prejudices. You really learn to get to know people before judging them.

Overall, I would highly recommend volunteering at The Gathering: Running Rebels. The individuals that volunteer are so kind and welcoming. Generally, the type of people that come in are college students, primarily from Marquette or University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, but there are also older volunteers and local community members that volunteer, like the cook and Jerry. Volunteering at The Gathering could lead you to meeting some new friends and it will surely open doors for you in the future!

Sadly, with the Fall 2020 Semester coming to an end, I will no longer be volunteering at The Gathering. Hopefully I can make some time in the future to go back and volunteer for a few hours here and there.

Its importance cannot be exaggerated, it is absolutely crucial to the defence of our islands and the preservation of our sovereignty, it is the crux of our coastal defence.

Our coast guard needs more brave men and women, and more vessels. This video by Bloomberg features the sort of trading going on between Trinidad and Venezuela on the high seas. It has to stop!
