Umetsuba Headcanon 3

Uryu and Seiryuu ran bets with Hiragi, Momose and Mizuki on how and when Umemiya and Tsubaki would get together.

Uryu bet on Tsubaki confessing in their second year of junior high. Seriyuu bet on Umemiya thinking the confession was just Tsubaki expressing feelings of friendship. Hiragi bet on Umemiya gently turning Tsubaki down. Momose bet on Tsubaki and Umemiya getting married right out of high school. Mizuki bet on the two of them getting together in their third year of high school.

No one predicted that Umemiya would ask Tsubaki out in their first year of high school, or on Tsubaki assuming it was a completely platonic hang out. In the end the five of them had to work together to help Tsubaki realise Umemiya wanted to be her boyfriend.

The next round of bets were on them when they'd move in together.

Queer Coding in Inazuma Eleven

Character: Mizukamiya Seriyuu

Although Mizukamiya plays a rather minor role in the Areorion anime, the spin-off manga Heir to the Penguins following the deuteragonist Haizaki and Seishou academy provides us with more depth surrounding his character. With this development I’d argue that writers (whether intentional or not) made Mizukamiya one of the most definitive queer/gay characters in the series.

Regardless whether you believe Haizaki reciprocates Mizukamiya's feelings or not, it's nearly impossible to ignore the romantic subtext that is written into the spin off manga between the two characters. Sharing headphones, riding Ferris wheels alone together, and even the "pin against the wall moment", all of these romantic tropes support the idea that the relationship between Haizaki and Mizukamiya (at least through Mizukamiya's perspective) can be interpreted as romantic.

The essences of queer coding is implementing common romantic themes and elements into a character/relationship while not overtly telling the reader that it's queer. When looking at how romance is portrayed in anime/manga (particularly in romance stories following cis-het relationships), we often see protagonist continuous effort to become closer with their love interest and desire to form an interpersonal relationship; one that is unique to them and their love interest. Ex. Kimi ni Todeke, Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun, etc.

Even though Mizukamiya's desire to become closer with Haizaki plays into the running joke that is it's his "duty as captain" it's shown throughout the story that his actions are fueled by a genuine desire to build a personal relationship with Haizaki.

For example Mizukamiya wanting a nickname from Haizaki is differentiated from the other characters. While the other characters view their nicknames are derogatory (bc frankly they are lol), Mizukamiya see it as endearing and therefore wants one. Seeing his reaction to Kidou questioning his desire for a nickname further supports reading Mizukamiya's actions as him wanting to be special to Hazaki; everyone calls him "captain" so he wants the person he considers special to call him something else.

When you combine this concept with the common romantic tropes written into their relationship, Mizukamiya's dynamic with Haizaki mirrors that of a crush typically found in romance media. His awkwardness when alone with him, always being concerned about him, and crying when finding out he transferred (with a very telling screen tone) show that seeing his feelings towards Haizaki as romantic is not farfetched; in fact it's pretty much implied.

Conclusion :D

Mizukamiya is one of my favorite examples of queer coding in ina11. His character is often seen as comedic yet his queerness isn't a bastardization or bait. His relationship with Haizaki is candid and honestly refreshing after seeing little to nothing of his character Ares. This is technically my first post so expect more of this series :))

Aside from the ('non-canon') movie shots, in the original series itself I don't think he ever actually manages to kill anyone (other than some artificially created veggie demons that are basically the demon version of solyent).

Hey everyone I've more or less decided on which costumes to bring with me to Otakon 2021 this August!

As for when I'd wear them is still to be decided on. I know I'll be wearing my Medicine cosplay to the Touhou photoshoot on that Friday but that's as far as I've decided.

I'd absolutely love it if I could get a group photo with other Yona of the Dawn cosplayers.

I had to take the Luka cosplay off the schedule because the dress wouldn't be ready in time.

we don’t know yet :’( the only wano seriyuu we know at the moment is komurasaki, who is being played by hinata’s seiyuu from one piece

i think we usually find out like, a week at most before the episode is aired. i remember we didn’t find out carrot’s voice actor until like the episode was basically upon us

After thinking about it a few thoughts on Ashiya's dad:

1. If the whole Justice, Executive, Legislator = Bykkao, Suzaku, Genbu so Ashiya is Seriyuu thing is still afloat maybe the Executor is so harsh with Ashiya because Ashiya reprsents how they're all temporary since he's his dad's successor or perhaps Ashiya appearing in Kakuriyo is an indication somthing is wrong with his dad or something in that kind of vein. 2. Is it possible nothing is wrong with Ashiya's dad and he's not dead either but for whatever reason he can't leave Kakuriyo? Like maybe because he does take on the role of dragon/Seriyuu or perhaps he's a mortal who's consumed so much of Kakuriyo he can no longer return to the mortal plane or somthing in that vein.

Anyway, season 2 episode 9 gave m a lot to think about

If I understood correctly, you associated branches with Chinese legendary guards. And you associated Legislator with black turtle of the North. But in his official profile it's stated that he's something similar to dragon/lizard. Plus, Kiyakudo uses turtle as its symbol even if it's not the part of the ruling system.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, this is in reference to Chinese mythology. I used the Japanese names since I would assume that if the series chose to go in that direction those are the names it would use. I think I saw the dragon/lizard symbolism and thought reptile like the snake that is also associated with Genbu/Black Turtle of the North. 

That’s good to know that there is someone using turtle symbolism then and so first section of this theory is likely incorrect.

Akatsuki no yona

Have you ever read/watched something and thought to yourself “WOW, these female characters are basically just in this story to be eye-candy for the consumer” or “these girls are written terribly”? I am guessing that you have since this is quite common, but what if I tell you about a manga/anime that treats female characters like actual people and not porn-actors? Let me introduce to you: Akatsuki no yona!

Akatsuki no yona is an action, adventure, comedy, drama, fantasy, reverse harem, romance, shoujo. You may be a little turned of by the reverse harem thing but please let me assure you that they treat Yona(our main protag) with the respect she deserves, and the boys never force themselves upon her and she does the same.

I’m not gonna tell you anything about the story, but I am going to tell you about the characters! (No spoilers!) I am however gonna talk about Yona 2 times due to her AMAZING character development.

Soooooo... Let’s start with Yona form the beginning of the series:

Yona is the lone child of King Il and, therefore, has been quite spoiled. She acts exactly like you’d imagine a spoiled princess to act, she is naive, arrogant and lives as if she doesn’t have a care in the world (besides her unruly hair). She is however very kind and cares a lot about the people around her. Yona, from the beginning of the series, can easily be seen as annoying from most people.

Yona as of chapter 144:

Yona is no longer a spoiled princess, she’s a survivor, someone who is ready to fight in order for her and her friends to survive. She is no longer naive nor arrogant. She is a warrior.

This change did not happen in a matter of seconds however, it happened slowly and naturally.

She didn’t become a new person though, no, she is still our kind-hearted Yona, she only got a few updates that removed some of her negative features and added some new positive ones.

Hak:

Hak is someone who hides his emotions quite well (unless your name’s Jea-ha then you can read him like an open book) and usually doesn’t like talking about them either.

Hak is an amazingly charming man, he’s loyal, honest, sarcastic and absolutely loves to teas others.

He takes sometime to fully trust you, but when he does he’ll trust you with his life.

Soo-won:

Soo-won is an extremely cunning man but prefers to hide it in order to seem more friendly and approachable. He can also very easily manipulate you into doing what he wants, and wheatear that’s bad or good depends on the situation.

He is a very interesting character, but I’m not gonna spoil anything so to find out what I’m talking about go read the manga!

Now to mom-I MEAN YOON:

Yoon is this series tsundere, but instead of saying : “I-it’s not like I like you or anything!” he’ll say :”I don’t remember giving birth to you!”.

This pretty boy genius is very clever and can basically do anything on his first try, he will however refrain from fighting as it’s not his cup of coffee. However since he can’t fight he’ll help out outside of battle instead.

Kija:

Kija is a big dumb dork. He is very prideful of his lineage and likes to boast about it.

Like Yona he’s quite sheltered due to his luxurious upbringing, but whilst Yona quickly got used to living outside, Kija did not. He is absolutely terrified of any type of insect and will scream like a baby if any comes close to him.

Seriyuu:

This guy has had a sad life. If you are willing to read this manga please understand that you’ll have to sign an adoption paper for this guy because he’ll turn into your precious baby boy.

He has been hated and shunned his entire life. When he first met Yona he could barely speak due to him not having talked to someone for years.

HE’S A PRECIOUS BABY.

Ao:

Meet the real star of the series Ao.

You think that the harem thing is for Yona? Ptttttf, Ao is what drags all the men into the group.

Jea-ha:

Let me precent to you: big bro Jea-ha!

So imma be real here, if you like Sanji from One piece then you’re gonna like Jea-ha. Jea-ha is a playboy pirate who fights using his legs, the differences from him and Sanji is however that Jea-ha never acts creepily towards a woman and respects her boundaries, he can’t cook that well and he’s an m.

Zeno:

This guy right here is amazing, he is so well written, he is so cool and I can’t talk about it because SPOILERS, UUUUUUGH... 

Zeno is a precious boy who deserves the world, the question is does the world deserve him?

I’d honestly say that it’s worth just reading the manga because of Zeno.

I’m gonna wrap this up soon but I would like to give some warnings:

1. Don’t show this manga/anime to kids as this show is meant for an older demographic. ( I mean it’s fine if you wanna show your 6 year old someone getting their head cut off )

2. This show can get really sad sometimes and if your not okay with that then I’d say that you avoid it. (some good examples on sad chapters: 100-105)

3. If you are gonna read this only because of the romance then I’ve got bad news for you. The romance is very slow but it seems that we may get Yona together with someone soon, but who could it beeeeeee~? 

Those are the warnings I’m gonna give, but please don’t get scared off by them! This is easily one of the better shoujos out there and it’d be a shame if you missed out on it!

I was really happy to spot Shin-ah's big brother Zeno before I left Katsucon today! Even if I was only partway in costume today and missing my makeup and wig... Had to hide my glasses behind my mask this time.

Overall I had a great time at the con, though I wish I got to more panels (and found more AnY cosplayers).

I should be back as Shin-ah at Otakon~

Unfinished Business

Okay so I’ve been talking about a ghost fic in a couple of posts so here it is. I couldn’t decide on what scene of Zeno’s life to write about so I’ve scene skipped some.This is a lot longer than what I expected it to be so I’m going to split it into multiple parts. So enjoy. 

She didn’t want to leave without Zeno. It was like a chain pulled her down to earth and she was left in the hut with Zeno and her body. She watched Zeno as he sat frozen. His eyes were glazed over and he seemed to be frozen to the spot. Kaya frowned how long did it take for her to come back for him? Surely not long. Kaya looked out and the leaves were changing colors. It had been mod summer when the pain in her chest left. Was she in limbo? 

Kaya looked down at her hands and she clenched her hands into fists. They were transparent. She was a ghost. 

Kaya looked at Zeno who looked like he hadn’t moved since summer. The state of her body would have made her sick, if she was still alive. 

“Zeno, did something right at least,” she heard a voice behind her. 

Turning around, she spotted three men standing in her hut. 

“What are you going here? This is my house,” she shot at them. 

They all three smiled. The big one with white hair bowed his head and said, “My name is Guen. This is Abi and Shuten. We are Zeno’s brothers. We are also ghosts like you, that’s why you can see us but Zeno can’t.” 

“But you guys, should still be alive if you’re Zeno’s-” Kaya stammered.

The one Guen called Shuten huffed, “Zeno is a special case.” 

Abi threw his hands up, “Why don’t we just tell her?!” 

Guen looked annoyed, “You can’t just say something like that to her. This is our sister-in-law.” 

Shuten rolled his eyes, “Yes. You’ve been gushing about their whole relationship and I’m tired of hearing about it.” 

Kaya looked between the strange looking men, “Tell me what? Also, what is wrong with your hair?”

Shuten laughed, “I like this girl! Nothing is wrong with our hair. It was changed to be like this. We are the original four dragons of Kouka.” 

Kaya shook her head, “That was over a century ago. Zeno told me stories about you to help me sleep. Wait, if you’re Zeno’s brothers, then Zeno is-”

“A dragon warrior, yes,” Abi said, impatiently. 

Kaya ran through the legend in her head, “One had a claw that could cut anything, one had eyes that could see far beyond, one had a leg that could help him fly to the heavens, and one had a body that couldn’t be destroyed.”

Her eyes wandered to her husband hunched over in the corner. 

“Surely, he can die right,” Kaya whispered. 

They didn’t answer him. Her mind wandered to her last words to him. 

Let’s meet again above the skies. 

How cruel. 

“That’s why he didn’t get sick... Why didn’t you tell me,” Kaya was yelling. 

She ran over and put a hand on his shoulder. It went through his shoulder, she shook her head. She chose to come back to wait for him, but he can’t ever be with her again. She looked back at the three legends who had as helpless as looks as she did. 

“This isn’t right,” Kaya cried,”He’s alone.” 

Guen shook his head, “It’s not right but it’s reality. We all chose to come watch over Zeno separately. I was surprised when Shuten showed up.”

“I’m not heartless I still care about the stupid kid,” Shuten said, walking over to stands beside Zeno, his tough demeanor slowly deteriorated when he saw the lifelessness in Zeno’s eyes. 

“Guen, I’ve never seen him like this,” Shuten worried. The other two walked past Kaya and gathered around Zeno. 

Abi shook his head, “How long is he going to be here? Its been months.” 

Guen closed his eyes, “For eternity, if he wanted to.” 

Shuten rolled his eyes as he watched Zeno tend to the injured boar, “He should just eat it.” 

“He can do what he wants,” Kaya shot back. 

Abi groaned, “Stop with your quarrel. I swear.” 

Guen smiled, “Look at us. Getting along.”

Abi sighed, “Hiryuu needs to come back and get him.”

Kaya perked up, “Can he do that?”

Rolling his eyes, Shuten replied, “That’s what we are hoping, but the king is so dimwitted that he might forget.” 

“Why isn’t King Hiryuu here? Didn’t he care about Zeno,” Kaya questioned.

Guen chuckled, “He was the one that Hiryuu protected the most. As soon as Zeno showed him his power. Hiryuu became adamant about Zeno not getting hurt.”

Kaya pursed her lips, “So he would be against the thief incident.” 

“Very,” Abi replied. 

They hovered around as Zeno made his way to Hakuryuu Village. 

Shuten rolled his eyes, “Every time he goes to your village he gets shot.” 

“It is not my fault my people are aggressive,” Guen commented. 

Abi got a very serious look, “At least your village doesn’t abuse their dragon.” 

The mood quickly turned somber. Kaya shook her head, Shuten and Abi’s villages were straight out of a nightmare. They hated the way their villages turned out. Abi could not free the trapped Seriyuu spirits in the cave. As a ghost, they could not do anything. Zeno checked on the villages from time to time. 

Zeno got to the village early and did something unusual. He talked to the current Hakuryuu. Kaya squealed at the sight of little Kija. 

“He’s adorable, Guen,” Kaya gushed over the small child. 

Zeno visited the other villages. They realized that Hiryuu had been reborn. Guen basically didn’t stop talking fro three days after they pieced it together. He walked around for fourteen years, then he was watching. 

“Zeno’s a stalker,” Shuten said.

“He’s not a stalker! He’s looking after Princess Hiryuu,” Guen shook his head. 

“He’s a stalker,” Abi said. 

“Kaya, help me,” Guen pleaded. 

Kaya watched as a fight broke out between Yona and her bodyguard. 

“Um guys,” Kaya said worriedly. 

They continued fighting. Yona cut her hair, Zeno still sat in the corner, watching. 

The two fell off the cliff. 

“Guys!,” Kaya grabbed Guen’s shoulder and they watched Yona and Hak fall off the cliff. 

Zeno jumped off the cliff after him. 

Shuten went into a rage cussing Zeno and the fire tribe soldiers. 

They all sat gathered a ways away from Yona’s band of craziness. The group was loud, but it was good from the silence of Zeno’s travels. They were being careful with Shinha. They had freed the Seiryuu spirits from the cave at the expense of Shinha being possessed. They watched Jeaha leave the group and after a new minutes he passed near them. Jeaha stopped to stare at the group for a minute and he sighed, “Not more vengeful ghosts.” 

Kaya looked around at them. Jeaha had never been able to see them before. 

Abi sighed, “The Seiryuu ghost incident might have heighten his senses. If someone has a good perception of ghosts, then a major encounter can make perception stronger.” 

Jeaha looked at them. They were transparent, but distinguishable. 

“Who are you,” Jeaha looked between them. 

“Not vengeful ghosts,” Guen said. 

“I don’t know I keep moving his hair brush and Zeno never got a drink with me so I might be a little bit vengeful,” Shuten smirked. 

Jeaha held up a hand, “Wait, if you know Zeno then why hasn’t he noticed you?”

Guen sighed, “He doesn’t know to look for us. The only way he can really see ghosts is due to his long life and he has to know they are there.” 

Abi rolled his eyes, “Or a lot of ghosts, like the human Hakuryuu pack mule that Kija is.” 

“Leave the boy alone,” Guen shot at Abi. 

“Point is,” Shuten sighed, “You’ve got a higher perception than Zeno. It just happens with some people.” 

Jeaha sighed, “I’m not drunk enough for this.”

The elder dragon walked back to their camp. 

“I miss beer,” Shuten said, longingly. 

“You think he’s going to tell him,” Kaya asked. 

“Maybe, if Zeno does know we are here, I don’t want him thinking it’s him keeping us from going to heaven,” Guen said.  

“Well technically, He is keeping Kaya,” Abi commented, “We all chose to watch. She came back to wait for him.” 

Kaya sighed, “I am waiting for him, waiting and watching.” 

They all grew somber as the night went by. Waiting to see if Jeaha would tell Zeno about them was almost as bad as the time Zeno fell into a decades long slumber and the plants grew around him. Shuten hated waiting. 

Zeno never came.
