It’s worth noting that the Vimes Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness is actually used by economists to discuss inequality.

I’m by no means an expert in this, but a quick reminder... For England:
Their Head of State (King Charles III) is also specifically the head of the Church of England, and their claim to authority is primarily based in the idea that the monarchy was divinely ordained to lead England.
Just amazing to see people claim that the discourse around cultural Christianity is very America-centric, like "ah yes, America is very Christian, unlike Europe."
Like, Sweden automatically registered its citizens as members of the Church of Sweden at birth until 1996. The Church was officially government-sanctioned until 2000.
Now that membership in the Church of Sweden isn't automatic anymore, and only 18% of Swedes say they believe in God, almost half of newborns are still getting baptized. 75% of funerals still take place in the Church. Swedish kids still attend "confirmation camps." The 3rd largest political party in Sweden insists that Christianity is fundamental to Swedish identity and wants to drive out members of non-Christian religions.
And this is in one of those European countries famous for being "secular."
That is, yes, cultural Christianity.
And don't get me started on England. Or on France.

United Way Essay
A few weeks ago, my daughter Lena called me into the room where she was playing. “Mom, I have a worry”, she said. She looked and sounded so cute, I wanted to laugh. But I kept a straight face as I asked her to tell me more about how she was feeling.
Before Amos Cottage, this type of conversation would have never happened. When we started outpatient therapy at Amos, Lena was three and had already been dismissed from two preschools due to behavior issues. By the time she enrolled in the Therapeutic Day Program (TDP), I was close to my breaking point. I remember being asked during the intake process, “What are your child’s best qualities?” and Lena’s therapist telling me how many parents she’d seen struggle to answer that question.
I was struggling too – I missed the sweet, happy little girl I knew still existed behind Lena’s impulsiveness and aggression. The staff at Amos Cottage and Lena’s doctors helped me to decode her behavior and to understand that mental illness in a child can look totally different than it does in an adult.
Most of Lena’s symptoms point to disruptive mood dysregulation disorder but like many of the kids at Amos Cottage, she doesn’t have just one issue. She has a complex combination of mental health issues and addressing them has been a process of trial and error, one that we couldn’t have gone through without the patience and kindness of the TDP staff.
With their help, Lena has developed valuable coping mechanisms to help her little brain and body deal with the big internal problems she’s facing. Our family has also learned how to better communicate with Lena and to discipline her in ways that are actually effective.
The popular belief is that kids who have problems at school and/or behavioral challenges must come from broken homes or parents that are too scared to discipline their children. When, in fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth in many cases. Mental illness is just that - it’s an illness.
At Amos Cottage, Lena got to be a kid and not just the “problem kid”. As a parent, I cannot imagine receiving a greater gift than what they’ve given me – a chance for my daughter to live her life as the beautiful, smart, happy little girl I’ve always known she is.

Amarone della Valpolicella 2013 Tommasi
Oh Italian wine!
If I just had the power to summarize Italy as a winegrowing country through one single post...Which is nearly impossible since every single region in Italy makes wine and there is about over 2500+ known indigenous varieties known to this day... So let’s maybe not get lost into that today and focus on one single area?
Or should I say one single wine from this area? I know, this sounds pretty confusing but please bear with me as we uncover Italian wine.
Veneto, with Venice as a worldwide destination, remains one of the three best well-known wine areas in Italy alongside Piedmont and Tuscany, also with one of the highest numbers of DOCGs. Good sign?
Generally yes, as it means that the local Consorzio (body of regulation) deemed worthy for those wines to be upgraded as DOCGs as they all started as DOCs (after tastings over the years and translating into stricter regulations later on for the winemaker to follow), which is also a good sign of viticulture being very well suited for this area as well.
Does that mean you are standing in the worst place on Earth? Probably not.
But on this opposite side of Venice is where we are headed today, over in the foothills of the Alps where Valpolicella is stretching over Verona from East to West, where the ‘Classico’ zone can be found (historically where Valpolicella started).
There, endless valleys of beautiful rolling hills can be found with elevation up to 800m high in certain areas, where the 3 main grape varieties, Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara are made into very different styles of wine:
Starting from the lightest to the fullest-body style: Bardolino DOC, Valpolicella DOC, Valpolicella Ripasso DOC, Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG and Recioto della Valpolicella DOCG.
-> Amarone della Valpolicella, at the top-tier of any proud winemaker’s portfolio, is the unusual process of grapes left out on their vines until reaching full potential maturation, then taken back into the winery, sorted out into baskets and put away inside drying rooms (Fruttaio rooms).
This is actually where the beauty come about where the grapes will take on another level of concentration as they are left sitting up to 4 months (process similar to the making of dessert wine: Vin Santo in Tuscany/Recioto della Valpolicella in Veneto) expect that yeast strains will be managed in a way so the wine ferments to full dryness, resulting in a dry wine from 15% to 20% depending on vintage variations vs. winemaker styles. Balance? Absolutely.
Although, sometimes where some wines lacks acidity and balance as they get richer, Amarone and mainly the grapes used in the making of it (Corvina) will retain some bright acidity even as they get picked later into ripening season, maintaining an overall luscious but full-bodied feeling.
TOMMASI, winery established in 1902 with almost 300 hectares, still today remains one of the pioneers in the Valpolicella Classico area for seeing the potential of the region early on and setting path for winemakers to come.
Giancarlo Tommasi, today, fourth-generation and head of winemaking came back after graduating from the University of Frudine up in Friuli to take over his father’s estate and has since set the rules for integrity of terroir and a combination of classic and modern winemaking such as ageing all his wines in larger neutral casks and avoiding the use of small barrels.
But let’s focus on our review of their Amarone della Valpolicella 2013:
As I’m pouring the wine into my glass, I’m realizing how intense of a dark ruby this wine is giving me, heading even into purple on the rims. Fully coating the glass and already smelling aromas jumping out as I’m swirling it, I am slowing braving for what is about to come inside the glass.
On the nose, the wine retains a very intense ripe black cherry core and a slight raisiny feel, almost as if dried fruits would have been sitting in the glass for a little while. Although as I’m giving the wine a second sniff, more baking spices (clove, nutmeg) and herbal aromas start to develop slowly (rosemary, thyme).
On the palate, the wine once again is deceiving as it gives a slight impression of sweetness although remaining on the drier side as it keeps delivering on those black cherry aromas, crushed plums, raisins and once again, that backbone of acidity all throughout, lifting up the wine. The wine remains full-bodied with a long finish on that combination of ripe black fruits and herbal aromas.
I found the wine fairly well-balanced overall with a bit of age on it although I would cellar for another 5-10 years as the intensity could be tamed a bit more. And no, I would not pass on any bloody/braised meats from lamb to pork. Matching that same level of intensity is definitely what this wine needs.
Thanks for reading!

6. Discussion around free college would go hand-in-hand with discussions around things like universal free healthcare, and start to break down the walls around neoliberalist ideas of complete self-sufficiency, which would make it even harder for the plutocracy to maintain their stranglehold on the poor.

To answer this question correctly, we’ll first need the link.
https://scri.siena.edu/2019/02/13/sienas-6th-presidential-expert-poll-1982-2018/
Trump isn’t 42nd out of 45; he’s 42nd of 44 (Grover Cleveland counts as both #22 and #24 in order due to his non-consecutive terms, but is only counted once in the ranking).
#43 is Buchanan, the guy who let the Civil War start.
#44 is A. Johnson, the guy who inherited after Lincoln died and just let the Southern states elect their old leaders and enact a bunch of racist laws which rendered the gains of the Civil War moot for a century.
It gets worse.
The public were also asked to rate presidents on twenty qualities. Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, both Roosevelts, and J Q Adams took all first and second places.
Trump was rated dead last for background, integrity, intelligence, executive appointments, and overall ability, and second worst for party leadership, relationship to Congress, ability to compromise, and ability to communicate. He was only outside the bottom five in two of twenty categories; luck (which he has had in abundance) and willingness to take risks (his risks are calculated, but he is bad at math).
As another baseline, Reagan comes in at #13 (mostly due to ending the Cold War, though his legacy is getting rightfully worse with time), and Nixon comes in at #29 (he actually did some legit stuff which is overshadowed by all the corrupt shit he did). Taylor comes in at #30, largely because he was around for so little time he couldn’t fuck anything up.
