Propaganda
Serina, Nomi, and Renzo Tessaro: (I will go ahead and say, the duology focuses almost entirely on Serina and Nomi and their stories while Renzo stays behind at home but he is kind of indirectly directly responsible for the main conflict of the first book. Continue reading and I'll explain:)
Serina is the eldest and Nomi and Renzo are fraternal twins. They live in a society where only men are allowed to be educated and taught to read, and most women either become wives or they become maids, unless they're very lucky, and they're chosen by the king or a prince to be a Grace (basically a concubine).
Serina has been training her whole life in etiquette to become a Grace, getting the better food portions to grow a curvier figure, and getting finer clothing and makeup than her mother and Nomi. She's content with this life and even looking forward to potentially being a Grace. She's polite and practically perfect. Meanwhile Nomi has been training her whole life to be Serina's handmaiden, and she's anything but happy about it. But she's doing it for Serina. She's an independent spitfire. She has opinions about the ways things ought to be done, even going so far as to defy the laws of the land and asking Renzo to teach her how to read (which he does).
Things all get turned on their head when Nomi gets chosen as a Grace for the crown prince, Malachi, instead of Serina, so Serina ends up as a handmaiden and Nomi has none of the high class suave or etiquette training that Serina has had literal years of. And to top it all off, before the choosing of the prince's Graces, Nomi took a history book out of the palace library, one that specifically states the kingdom had a long history of queens. The two of them get caught with the book after the ceremony and Serina takes the blame like the honorable older sister she is. She ends up getting exiled to a prison island where women literally are pitted against each other in fights to the death for rations and men's entertainment.
From then on, it is up to Serina and Nomi, from their separate islands, to pull on their memories of each other to get them through their circumstances and change the way things work. Can Serina become the spitfire that Nomi always was and survive the prison island? Can Nomi actually please Malachi and potentially the second prince Asa as a Grace without any of the propriety and refinement that Serina had?
But ultimately it will be their quest to find each other again that will bring the kingdom back to its era of queens in the second book of the duology, all of which never would have happened if Nomi's twin brother Renzo had not taught her how to read.

Title: Grace and Fury by Tracy Banghart (Grace and Fury, #1)
Prompt: Divination: let the fates decide, use a random.number generator to choose your next pick.
Page Count: 320 Pages 📚
Rating: 2(ish) Stars ⭐
Synopsis: In a world where women have no rights, sisters Serina and Nomi Tessaro face two very different fates: one in the palace, the other in prison.
Serina has been groomed her whole life to become a Grace - someone to stand by the heir to the throne as a shining, subjugated example of the perfect woman. But when her headstrong and rebellious younger sister, Nomi, catches the heir's eye, it's Serina who takes the fall for the dangerous secret that Nomi has been hiding.
Now trapped in a life she never wanted, Nomi has only one way to save Serina: surrender to her role as a Grace until she can use her position to release her sister. This is easier said than done. A traitor walks the halls of the palace, and deception lurks in every corner. But Serina is running out of time, imprisoned on an island where she must fight to the death to survive and one wrong move could cost her everything.
---
"It isn't a choice when you don't have the freedom to say no. A yes doesn't mean the same thing when it's the only answer you're allowed."
---
Man, was this a disappointment. It was in my most anticipated shelf and everything. I love sibling bonds being prominent within a fantasy element, so I thought this would be a shoo-in for at least a 4 star? I was expecting action, cunning, bravery, wit, ambition...and what I got was just kinda there?
I loved the idea, two sisters being complete opposites are split up and are in two very different places. The prim and proper sister who was trained for the royal courts is in the fighting ring, and the fiesty and rash sister finds herself hanging out with the princes. I thought that they'd take what they know about each other and learn to apply it (much like Klaus and Violet do in A Series of Unfortunate Events), but that didn't happen.
The problem with duel perspective is that there is almost always one POV that I prefer to the other, and for me it was Serena's chapters that took that title. 1.5 of those stars is for her alone! I thought she was the most boring of the sisters, but I think she experienced the most growth and that was at least a little exciting to see, and I liked her side characters a lot more as well (but gag me with that romance, not here for it).
Nomi, on the other hand, didn't really do a lot of anything except for doing what the crowned princes told her to do, despite not trusting them at the beginning of this novel. She does a complete 180 with absolutely no reason? Just starts trusting them. Just like that. I felt like she had no real depth to her as a character. You can tell me that she's loud and outspoken all you like, but unless you show me, then I don't believe you. And Nomi showed us nothing except that she's very easily swayed. The only thing I liked about Nomi's chapter was one of the other Grace's, I thought she was lovely.
And I saw the plot twist coming from a mile away.
This was a wonderful idea and it had a good set up. It was a fast read and I flew through it, but I just don't think it was executed very well. It felt a bit rushed and not edited very well. With a little time and a lot of fine tuning, this could have had more appeal. For me, it just fell a little too short in too many things.

Cover Reveal: Grace and Fury
Are you ready to get a sneak peek at one of the must-read fantasies of 2018? Well, you're in luck, because today we're revealing the cover of Tracy Banghart's Grace and Fury, a thrilling story of political intrigue and sisterhood that we could not put down. Here's what it's all about:
Bold, brutal, and beautiful—a must-read fantasy full of fierce sisterhood, action, and political intrigue for fans of The Selection series and Caraval.
In a world where women have no rights, sisters Serina and Nomi Tessaro face two very different fates: one in the palace, the other in prison.
Serina has been groomed her whole life to become a Grace--someone to stand by the heir to the throne as a shining, subjugated example of the perfect woman.
Okay, what a plot! Are you ready for the cover? Because here it is in all its grace and fury:
Tumblr media
Cool, right? Here's what Tracy has to say about Grace and Fury:
Give us your elevator pitch for Grace and Fury.
Grace and Fury is about two sisters, Nomi and Serina, who are fighting for their freedom in a world where women have no rights. One sister becomes an unwilling Grace to a cruel prince, and the other must fight for her life in a barbaric prison. They’re desperate to reunite, but in their dangerous, patriarchal world, one wrong move could cost them everything.
Tell us about your favorite character.
I feel like this is a trick question! With two sisters as my main characters, picking one would be like choosing a favorite child. (Okay, fine. Serina. But only because, as the eldest in my own family, I can relate to her sense of duty and the protectiveness she feels for her younger sister. Actually, nevermind. Nomi is my favorite. She’s so idealistic and rebellious, and…oh heck. I love them both, okay?) Honorable mention: Petrel, who tells one of the sisters to always fight back.
Do you have a favorite line in Grace and Fury?
“In all the stories, women give up everything,” Maris said, her voice tight. “We are always supposed to give. We are never supposed to fight. Why do you think that is?”
Voice low, knowing she was walking on a knife’s edge, Nomi murmured, “Because they’re afraid of what will happen if we do.”
I know it’s technically more than one line, but this exchange is my favorite in the book. It’s been in GRACE AND FURY since the very first draft. I think it encapsulates so much of what this book is about, and why I wanted so much to tell this story. As a woman, I feel like I am always fighting: against sexism, against expectations, gender norms, just to prove I’m equal to the men in my life…it’s a personal fight that feels like it’s become very large and present in the world lately.
Tell us what you think about the cover!
I LOVE the cover! Given the graphic nature of recent fantasy YAs, I wasn’t expecting actual people on my cover, and I am SO thrilled to have them there, staring so fiercely out at me. My sisters are the heart of this story, and their determination totally comes through with this cover. It’s dark, too, which fits the subject matter, and I love the volcanic texture to the background, seeing as half the story takes place on a volcanic island. I hope you love it too!
Thanks so much for stopping by NOVL, Tracy!
We hope you love this book and cover as much as we do. We’re soooo excited for this book to come out July 24, 2018. In the meantime, shelf Grace and Fury on Goodreads and stay tuned with #GraceandFury for more updates.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars I liked this book, but it definitly was not a great book. It lacked descriptive content. I have this feeling about reading a book where i do not know what any room, any character looked like. It was also very predictible. I knew what would happen in the end ate the third of my reading. The thing that annoyed me the most was the feminism. It was badly used, as if the writer juste wanted to make feminism characters with absolutly no idea on how to deal with them. It's like surfing on the actual feminism mouvement just to try to get more readers. I don't think i'm going to buy the second book.

About the Author

Tracy Banghart grew up in rural Maryland and spent her summers on a remote island in northern Ontario. All of that isolation and lovely scenery gave her the time to read voraciously and the inspiration to write her own stories. Always a bit of a nomad, Tracy now travels the world Army-wife style with her husband, son, cat, and sweet pupper Scrabble. She wrote Grace and Fury while living in Hawaii.

My 4-Star Review
I was so happy when I heard about this book, for two main reasons: first, I LOVE Tracy’s Rebel Wing series (seriously, it’s so good, don’t miss out!); and second, I love dystopians, and this one is set in a future world but with some very old-world style, which is always fun. Although it has a historical fiction feel, it’s not actually historical but rather a vision of a potential future--and one that is absolutely terrifying for women. When you add what sounds like two awesome sisters trying to fight the power, I knew I had to read it! And what a fun read it was. I flew through this and book and loved every minute of it.
I have to say, I had expectations for each of the sisters, and knew even before reading that I would identify with Nomi (which I did!), but I was unsure about Serina. Then there was a pretty big twist early on, and then another shocking twist on the heels of that one, and from then on I was propelled through the story at rocket speed. And then of course there are more twists and more turns and all of a sudden you realize you’re at the end and you’re crying and...well, at least I was!
My favorite part of this book is definitely the character development. Watching each of the sisters grow in such different ways was so satisfying, and I rooted for both of them so dang hard. I admit I had twinges of sorrow while reading, because I lost my sister to domestic violence ten years ago, and I felt so deeply the bond that Serina and Nomi had, despite their immense differences. If I had to live in a world like the one they’re in, I wouldn’t want anyone else by my side before my sister! I loved seeing Serina and Nomi fighting so hard to move on, not so much for themselves, but for each other.
I would highly recommend this for any fan of dystopian books, books with a historical feeling (think Keira Cass’ Selection series), books that feature sister bonds and awesome displays of girl power, and books with lots of twists and turns! I love Tracy’s writing and can’t wait for the next installment.
Rating: 4 stars for sisterhood!
