Time Era Swap AU - Sybil (Sarah Patterson)
When we were led into the courtyard, past the thick, hanging grape vines and sheer fabric canopy, Dea’s benefactor was finally revealed. She lounged on a low bench, lazily picking up a gold goblet as a handmaiden fanned her. The girl looked around my age. Her honey-brown eyes looked to us. “Ah, punctual as usual.” she drawled. “Welcome, little mystery.”
“Pardon?”
She smirked. “You’re the odd Thracian Dea’s been prattling on about. Something special, she claims.” Her eyes raked over me, lingering on my slightly curved hip and still non-existent bust. “I’m not sure what that would be from a glace, though. Expected some stunning thing for my eyes to feast upon. They say Thracians are wild beauties.” I shrank back. I didn’t like how she looked at me. She took a swig from her goblet. “Well then? Can you not speak? Are you dumb?”
“I can speak.”
“There we are!” She sat up. “I am Sybil, daughter of Lord Ioannidis. Welcome to our humble home, foreign guest of Thrace.” She tilted her head. “Tell me, miss, by what name should my tongue call you?”
I stared at her for a moment. She spoke with a haughty elegance that put me on edge. Still, Dea was my friend and this girl was her benefactor. Maybe she could help me as she was helping Dea. I bowed as best I could, still unused to the motion. “I am Elena of the Zlatariva Clan in Thrace. The Temple of Artemis houses me at this moment at the request of my mother.”
“Helen then.” Sibyl nodded. Though technically not incorrect, I still grimaced at the botching of my name. She stood. “Come! Helios is being cruel today despite the fair wind. Trina, my darling, will you retrieve my tools from the chest?” Her eyes flickered to me. “I’d rather figure out this girl’s mysteries sooner rather then later.”
The handmaiden, Trina, took her mistress’ hand and bowed over it before kissing the fingertips. The intimate gesture sent a shock of surprise through me. “As you wish, my lady.” She left, neatly plaited red-gold hair flashing into the shadows of the archway leading deeper into the manor.

Wait, what happened in The Dragon Republic?
I know I’m behind the tumblr train of love for the Poppy War series, but I had a hard time getting into this book because I loved the boarding school part but the second half was just terrible war. It turns out I was half right - this book was all terrible war, but I’m so glad I read it. Keep reading for lots of spoiler plot points and my general thoughts on everything (like how Kitay is the best), to remind you what happened before you read The Burning God.
So when the book starts out Rin and the Cike are doing work for Moag the pirate queen because they have a deal to assasinate people for her and then she’ll give them what they need to assassinate the Empress Daji.
But Moag breaks the deal and sells them out to Vaisra, Nezha’s dad (Nezha and Rin were buddies in Sinegard together).
Vaisra wants to capitalize on this moment of instability following a war to assassinate Daji and create a republic, and he needs Rin’s help, so he gets her and the Cike to join his Dragon Army.
They also get Kitay to join, he’s like their super booksmart friend from Sinegard, and he’s super good at strategy and stuff.
They make this whole plan to get Rin in to assassinate her but it fails spectacularly and Daji puts a Seal on Rin’s mind so that she can’t call the phoenix god any more, and the Seal is also slowly poisoning her mind and eating her memories?? Yikes.
So they go back to Dragon Province and everybody is like “yo it’s time to attack, the longer we wait the more time the empress has to build ships and an army.” But Vaisra is waiting for the Hesperians to show up.
The Hesperians are terrible white people who are like missionaries but their country is super advanced. They’re like the OG colonizers who started the first poppy war. So they’re like we’re going to help you out but we have to decide if you’re worthy first. And part of their terms is that they get to study Rin because they think that she access Chaos, which is the antithesis of their god, the Maker.
So then there’s this long part where Jinzha, Vaisra’s son, takes these ships up the country and attacks towns and lets them vote to join the Republic. But then he gets super cocky (partly because the Hesperians are watching his every move to decide if he’s worthy), and leads them to attack on this lake even though they’re super outnumbered
After this battle, Rin, Kitay, Chagan, and Qara escape down the river. They meet up with the Sorqan Sira, who is a Ketreyid related to Qara and Chagan. She gets rid of Rin’s Seal by binding her with Kitay, the way that Qara and Chagan are. There’s a conflict started by her second in command, and Qara and the Sorqan Sira die. Chagan goes back to the Hinterlands, and Kitay and Rin head back to the Republic.
Ok around here the order starts to get a little shaky, but here are some facts:
Their buddy Venka from Sinegard is there! She’s injured and but she’s adapting and we love her.
Nezha can channel this dragon god! He’s a shaman. And he has been his whole life, after he met a dragon in a grotto. He’s in constant pain, but Rin is not sympathetic.
There are a bunch of refugees from the southern provinces. Rin finds her old family and it’s not what she expected.
At one point the southern Warlords ask Rin to defect with them, but she says no.
Oh there was a wind god shaman at the lake, so Kitay builds Rin some wings so that she can fight him.
At one point Rin sees a Hesperian soldier raping a refugee. She kills him and dumps the body in the river.
There’s a big battle! They entomb the river god shaman in a mountain, and she fights empress Daji and finds out that Daji’s real goal in all of her supposed betrayals against the country was to keep the Hesperians out. She gets lost because Rin doesn’t kill her, and it’s almost sort of an afterthought.
The Hesperians finally give their aid and the Republic wins the war.
Ok so after the big battle and everything, it’s clear that the Hesperians are taking over, and Rin, Kitay, and the Cike are getting ready to escape.
But, Rin goes off and gets drunk with Nezha, and he stabs her and betrays her.
Rin is captured by the Hesperians, who are going to take her and force her to do experiments for them. She sees two other members of the Sike get killed.
Kitay gets Rin out, but has to break one of her hands to get it out of the shackle. They escape with Venka, and some of Moag’s fleet comes ot get them.
Rin realizes that the true strength of Nikan is it’s southern provinces (where she’s from) so she goes there to raise an army and fight to win her country back. Woohoo!
And she wants to kill Nezha - of course.

About inspiration for Moag, it's of course clear that he took a lot from Iwasaki but he also obviously took some details from the life of Nakamura Kiharu a very famous Tokyo geisha who moved to the US in the 1950's and started teaching about Japanese culture. She wrote a series of autobiographies but they're only available in either French or English and of course Japanese. Nakamura passed away in 2004 in her 90's and was very outspoken about her dislike for Iwasaki.
To be honest I’ve never heard of Kiharu Nakamura, which is surprising as I have a fairly large personally library of both books that I own and books that I have yet to own on geisha. I’ve found copies of her book in Spanish, German, and Russian, but not English or French. Beyond that, any reviews that I can find for the book paint her as a very spiteful woman whose book focuses more on people she dislikes rather than her own career. It appears that she never even met Iwasaki, and as a Tokyo geisha (I can’t even find the hanamachi that she worked in) her story is going to be very different than someone who was a geisha in Gion Kobu. As to what mishmash of information Golden used for his shoddy book I couldn’t care less as it’s a stain that has been difficult to remove from both literary circles and actual public knowledge.

Time Era Swap AU - Dea (Diana Jones)
The drooping tree branches provided some privacy as we sat. Talia stood near us, head bowed and gaze to the ground as was ‘proper’ for her position. I still couldn’t get used to having a personal slave; back home only the rich had such things. “So tell me; what is Lady Sybil helping you with?” I asked. Dea adjusted the shawl covering her earth-toned curls that attempted to spring free. Fear was plain on her face. “Please. No matter what it is, you know I shall understand. We shall understand.” Talia nodded.
The merchant girl worried her lower lip. “And you... will not flee... when I tell you?”
“Of course not.” I replied. “Please have confidence in me.”
After a moment, Dea nodded. “Since I was born... on nights when Selene shows her full beauty to us below... I crave the source of life that flowers in our veins.” Her confession was a whisper, hands clasped tightly in her lap and trembling.
My eyes widened. “Vampyr?” She nodded. “Since you were born?” She nodded again. “You’re very powerful then.”
Dea blinked. “You’re not... what do you mean born? Is this not an infliction by the gods, a madness? It must be Lord Dionysus’ doing, my family must have offended him!”
I shook my head. “In Thrace, we know of them. Of vampyr. There are many many breeds. Some are born, like any animal or human. Some are made. Some are the undead. Some are perverse spirits.”
“What kind of country is Thrace...?” Dea gasped. Talia stifled a giggle.
“So... you have asked Lady Sybil to...?”
“To remove this infection, this curse. Over time it will become more obvious.” Dea worried her lip again.
Talia came forward a bit, voice low. “Those bodies they’ve been finding outside the polis walls. Is that you? The body every lunar cycle that’s fully drained of blood?” Dea nodded. “Oh...”
“I’m hungry!” she whined. “I tried to suggest to try drinking a little a day, maybe from some livestock of a farmer we know but he refuses! I get so hungry and then I just... my monthly blood letting makes me lose even more blood and I just-”
“You can’t resist anymore.” I concluded.
The merchant nodded. “Please; you can say nothing. Nothing! Lady Sybil is my only hope to be normal. How can I marry like this? How can I bare children like this? They might be the same as me!” Tears welled up in the girl’s eyes. “Please Elena; tell Lady Sybil your secret. She refuses to help me anymore with her potions until you do. The moon is full in three days. I don’t want to leave another body by the riverbank.”

Time Era Swap AU - Elena Zlatariva
I looked down to the forest floor, the maddened women circling the man. The god behind me took my jaw in his hand and forced my face up. “Look, cousin. It is important to see a punishment through.” The man groaned, body twitching.
“W-wait! He’s still alive!” I called to the women. They giggled and tittered, their voices bring the injured man to full consciousness. His eye fluttered open and he shrunk back at the mad gleam in their eyes.
“All the better. So his soul remembers the lesson.” One of the women took the thin branch I’d pierced the man with and yanked it out. He howled in pain, rich red blood pooling up and quickly soaking the fabric of his chiton. “You do not need to delight in the display. Simply see it through. This is your first lesson as a Theoi; humans will never understand your wishes even when stated clearly. Punishment must be merited out.” The women’s circle tightened. I shrunk away, back pressing to the god’s chest. “Finish what you started.”
One of the women let out a screech of delight and lunged, clawing into the man’s flash as it gave way like wet parchment. He screamed. The other women joined in. I turned to the god. “You’re Lord Dionysus.” It came out in a fearful whisper.
The god smiled, wine-dark eyes shimmering with delight. “That I am. Now go, return to my revelry. I would be a poor host to deny my cute, new cousin my hospitality.”

Time Era Swap AUs - Legend of the Red Comet and Memoirs of a Goddess
Legend of the Red Comet: It’s 2025 in Manila, Philippines. The era of superstition and reverent prayers are long gone from the world as modern technology, medical advancements and globalization take hold. Yet still, demons continue to prey on humanity. Disbelief has only made their lives easier. But in this world, there still exists a corps of humans who preserve the old ways, fusing blessings and inhuman abilities with steel and neon-colored tech. Tenshi Tanaka’s family has always hunted the demons in Manila under the orders of the government. With a terrifying spike of possessions, disease and terrorism, it seems a prophesy spoken long ago is finally about to pass. And Tenshi is right at the center of it all.
Memoirs of a Goddess: ‘Never let them see you bleed’ her mother had warned her. When her first monthly blood letting had come, Elena had suddenly understood why; honey gold mixed with the cinnabar red running down her thighs. Sent to the Temple of Artemis in Athens, Greece, the young maiden from Thrace quickly realizes things are not as they seem. As the Titans shake at their cages and the Olympians whisper about the newest impending addition to their pantheon, the question remains: will Elena be a Goddess of Order or Chaos? And will her inheritance spell the beginning of a rebirth or the death of a nation as soldiers march onto Greece from the budding empire in the West named Rome?

The greasy man leered at me. “Well? Don’t just stand there! Shoot her!” he snapped at the taller, blond man. His expression was unreadable, ice-cold and apathetic. After a moment the blond pointed the gun at the greasy man’s leg and shot. The man howled in pain and fell to the grimy ground. The music from the club continued to pound through the brick and concrete wall. “What the fuck! What the fuck!”
The blond looked at the screaming man. “I don’t kill little girls.” His voice was surprisingly quiet. He walked over to where I lay shivering on the ground, holstering his gun as he did. He reached out a hand to me. “I’ll take you home.” Those brilliant aqua eyes were far softer when looking at me. Hesitantly, I took his leather-gloved hand. He pulled me up with ease.
“Cassius!” the man screamed to the blond. “You’ll never work in this town again!” The blond man, Cassius, ignored him, shepherding me away. He placed a hand lightly on my upper back to guide me. Cold mist clinging to my skin as we walked out of the alleyway.
The music from the club continued thrumming around us. People in line to enter the club glanced at us nervously, probably because of the gun shot and slowly quieting screams from the man. Cassius ignored them, continuing past with a short nod to the bouncer outside. We crossed the street and approached a glossy black motorcycle. A sidecar was attached. He reached into it and pulled out a helmet. “Where do you live?”
I took the helmet handed to me. I pressed my lips into a thin line. “Nowhere.” Technically the truth; this wasn’t my home town. This wasn’t even my own dimension. The neon signs around had a mixture of English letters and East Asian characters. Nothing was readable. I wasn’t quite sure how I could understand the man in front of me. Magic? I had used it to get here without understanding how; maybe it was translating everything as well for my ears and mouth.
Cassius nodded. “Get in.” My stomach a mess of nerves. He’s a stranger. He didn’t hesitate to shoot that man. If he wants to hurt me, he will. I shouldn’t go with him. He straddled the motorcycle and put on his helmet before turning to me, waiting expectantly. What if he doesn’t ‘kill little girls’ but he does something worse… I’ve read enough stories to know how a hero gets trapped. I stopped myself; hero? What kind of hero was I? What was I fighting? Nothing, that’s what. Still, he had protected me. He was offering to take me someplace presumably safe. I could feel the cold creeping into my bones, the unpleasant griminess of the alleyway and runoff soaking into my pajamas. My palms were scrapped. My left foot was bleeding a bit. I needed to get cleaned, bandaged and warmed. “I’m not taking you anywhere bad. Just somewhere safe.” I don’t have much of a choice. I don’t even know how to go back to my own world. I put on the helmet and climbed into the sidecar.
I couldn’t keep track of the streets we zipped through. Cassius wove in and out of the lanes with an experienced grace. When we arrived at our destination and the engine was shut off, the world became silent. There were dingy streetlights casting yellow light and black shadows on the ground. He helped me out of the sidecar. When I took off the helmet I stared at the building. It was a very tall building, not quite a skyscraper but close. Panes of tinted glass crawled up the side of the building facing the neon lights of what I guessed was downtown. There were a few mopeds and beat-down cars parked around. An apartment complex. “Come on.” I pulled my eyes from the surroundings and saw my escort was already at the building entrance. I put the helmet into the side car and hurried over. “Stay close.” I nodded, shivering; the wind from the drive had chilled me to the bone in my damp state. My breath came in mist clouds.
Cassius lifted his right wrist to a small white plate by the side of the door. I noticed a slim black bracelet made of something that shone in the yellow light illuminating the landing. A cheerful beep and he pulled open the door for me. I went inside. The ground was a bit dirty, a few tiles chipped at the corners exposing dark grey concrete. There were panels on the sides of the walls, flickering a little. I looked at one to see it was a virtual board. There were virtual stickies and sheets of tacked-on paper. I pressed the screen over a sticky note and the image sprang to life, something popping out. I flinched and shielded my face. “It’s a notice board.” I looked to see Cassius watching me. “It won’t hurt you. Look.” I turned back to the board to see that, while the sticky note was now somehow popped out of the screen, it hovered harmlessly. I reached for it and my fingers went through, as if it wasn’t there.
“How…” I could feel my eyes widening.
“We don’t want to linger.” He said. He came to my side. With a small swipe of her hand towards the screen, the stick note image dissolved and reappeared harmlessly on the screen. “Let’s go.”
I followed. “How did it pop out of the screen? Why did the screen change when I touched it? How is that possible?”
Cassius lifted the wristband again to a panel which pinged. I heard mechanical movement behind what looked like elevator doors. “You’ve never seen a holotouch?” I shook my head. He frowned but made no comment.
Curiosity was getting the better of me. “What’s a holotouch?”
The door pinged again and opened to reveal an elevator. Someone came out, noticing Cassius. “Hey man, where’ve you been? Tida’s been clawing at the doors looking for ya.” The woman noticed me and smiled. “Aww, who’s this cutie? Don’t tell me you’re adopting a stray?” Cassius simply placed a protective hand on my shoulder. “Aww, don’t be like that! I don’t bite unless paid.” The woman squatted down and looked up at me. Her mascara was thick, lips a brilliant lilac. Her cheekbones seemed to glow on her deep brown skin. “What’s your name, dear?”
“Elena.”
“Ooo, a vintage name. Your parents musta missed their old country.” She tilted her head. The earrings she wore caught the yellowed light. “I’m Samila, Cassius’s neighbor. It’s very nice to meet you. If ya need anything, just givea holler. May not look like much but no one makes better cookies then me.” She winked before standing up again. I felt a bit confused; how old did she think I was? Seven? Not that I’ll say no to a good cookie… “By the by, Cas-.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“By the by. Tida was reeeeal mad when I saw her last night. You’re gonna get an ass-whoppin’ for sure this time around. Can’t ya just ping her on occasion? I’m sure she’d be grateful.”
He sighed. “I was busy.”
“Ya get unbusy for family, ya hear?” Samila patted the top of my head. “Especially when you’re decidin’ to make it grow.”
“I’m twelve.” I said suddenly.
Samila blinked for a second before laughing. “Ooo, she got a mouth! I like her. Gonna grow up to be a sassy young thing. Keep an eye on her, Cas. Boys and girls’ll flock to this one.” She frowned. “Although… it will give her a lot of heartache.” Her warm brown eyes looked at me, a bit unfocused. I could see shards and sparks of amber and gold. “Yes… a river of blood… an ocean of tears…” She looked to Cassius. “You were meant to find this little Goddess.”
“How…” I felt my blood freezing; how did she know!
“Mmm…” She pressed her knuckles to her temple. “Forget I said anythin’, darlin’. I ran low on my meds this month.” The smile was fragile. “I say silly things sometimes.”
Cassius’ expression softened a bit. “Samila, you know you’re not-.” His mouth was covered by her manicured hand, cutting him off.
“Yes. I am.” She hissed. Her eyes darted around. “Just a woman who sometimes hears voices. All I need is my medication to keep it under control. That’s all.” She removed her hand. “Anyway! Time to clock in for work. Those drinks won’t serve themselves!” Unexpectedly, she hugged me as well. “Do not trust the witch. She seeks to destroy you.” The message was whispered fervently, so fast and low I almost didn’t catch it. “Steal her knowledge with caution.” She pulled away. “You’ll be just fine with Cassius. Tida’s no slouch either; amazing cook, can get stains outta anythin’ and can throw a punch. Best big brother and sister you can find.” Samila sauntered off, exiting the building without another glance.
