Chapter 13: The Bitter Truth

Russian, Siberia 2016

The Siberian Hydra facility loomed large in the snowy landscape, its dark silhouette casting an ominous shadow against the backdrop of the cold, unfeeling wilderness. Tony Stark, having secretly left with Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, was unaware of the eyes watching them from a hidden vantage point. T’Challa had followed them discreetly, his sense of justice and honor driving him to uncover the truth.

Inside the facility, the atmosphere was tense. Tony, Steve, and Bucky had entered a large, dimly lit chamber. The walls were lined with remnants of Hydra’s nefarious experiments, and the air was thick with the scent of rust and decay. Zemo had already made his presence known, his cold eyes betraying his twisted satisfaction.

As the team approached, Zemo began his revelation. “You see,” he said with a chilling calmness, “the Hydra base was not just a hidden facility. It was a repository of dark memories and secrets.”

He activated a projector, and a series of grainy, old footage flickered to life on the screen. The images were unsettling, depicting scenes of brutal experiments and training. Then, the footage shifted to a more personal angle, showing a mission from 1991. The camera focused on a young Bucky Barnes, his face obscured by the shadows of his Winter Soldier persona. He was in the middle of a violent confrontation, and soon, the scene revealed the victims of the mission—Tony Stark’s parents, Howard and Maria Stark.

Tony's eyes widened in shock as the footage showed Bucky, under Hydra’s control, killing his parents. The pain and anger in his eyes were palpable as he processed the brutal truth. The realization hit him like a ton of bricks, and he turned to Steve, his voice laced with betrayal and rage.

“You knew. You knew all along, and you didn’t tell us!” Serena’s voice was a mixture of fury and heartbreak. “You let us walk around with this… with this blindfold, thinking everything was fine.” Steve’s face was a mask of regret and sorrow. “I didn’t know it was him”

Before Steve could finish, Tony’s anger erupted “Don’t bullshit me, Rogers, Did you know?” Steve nods in regret, Tony was clearly taken aback. He charged at Bucky, his Iron Man suit’s repulsors glowing ominously. In a flurry of movements, he dismembered Bucky’s robotic arm, the sound of metal tearing echoing through the chamber. Bucky fell to the ground, clutching his injured arm in pain.

Steve, torn between his duty and his friend's suffering, attempted to protect Bucky. As he moved to disable Tony’s armor, the arc reactor in Tony’s suit flickered and then shattered under Steve’s powerful strike. The suit’s systems shut down, causing Tony to collapse to the ground, the once formidable armor now powerless and inert.

Serena, who had been fighting alongside, rushed to her father’s side, her heart pounding with fear. “Dad!” she cried out, her voice trembling. “Are you okay?” Tony’s eyes, filled with pain and exhaustion, met Serena’s. “I’m… I’m fine,” he said weakly, his voice strained. “Just… just get away from here. Get to safety.”

As Steve and Bucky prepared to leave, Steve’s gaze fell on the shield lying abandoned on the ground. He picked it up, but before he could say anything, Tony’s voice cut through the tension. “That shield,” Tony said with a bitter edge, “My father made that shield. And you… you don’t deserve it.” Steve looked at the shield, then at Tony, his expression a mix of determination and resignation. He turned away, leading Bucky out of the facility, leaving Tony and Serena behind. Serena’s eyes were filled with tears as she watched her father’s weakened form and the departing figures of Steve and Bucky.

As the facility’s doors closed behind them, Serena knelt beside Tony, her heart breaking at the sight of her father’s pain. “We need to get out of here,” she said, her voice choked with emotion. Tony nodded weakly, and with Serena’s help, they made their way out of the facility. The snow outside seemed colder and more unwelcoming than ever, a stark contrast to the warmth and unity they had once known.

The aftermath of the confrontation left the Avengers in disarray. Steve, Bucky, and their allies had fled, leaving behind a fractured team and a legacy of broken trust. The facility’s dark secrets had been revealed, and with them, the deep wounds of betrayal and loss.

As Tony and Serena made their way back to the compound, the weight of the events pressed heavily on them. Serena could barely contain her anguish as she helped her father, the loss of the shield and the betrayal weighing on both of them. In the quiet of the compound, the team gathered to assess the damage. Tony’s suit was being repaired, and the emotional scars were still fresh. The divide between the two factions of the Avengers was now more pronounced than ever, and the path to reconciliation seemed increasingly distant.

Tony sat with Serena, his expression a mix of fatigue and determination. “We have to move forward,” he said quietly. “We can’t let this divide us any further. We need to find a way to make things right.” Serena nodded, her eyes filled with resolve. “We will, Dad. We have to. For everyone’s sake.” As the sun set over the compound, the Avengers faced an uncertain future. The battle lines had been drawn, and the path ahead was fraught with challenges. But amidst the chaos, the bonds of family and friendship remained, a glimmer of hope in the darkness.
