Some friends from today in the #sepulvedabasinwildlifereserve in #losangeles. The caterpillars are Hyles lineata, aka white-lined sphinx moth (Google them, they’re pretty cool). All said we counted more than 12 in and amongst two California fuchsia. Can’t say for certain, but I’m thinking these hungry lil guys have chomped all the flowers and tipped the ends of the stems.

I was sitting by the water’s edge watching a cormorant gobble up fish after fish. Out of nowhere, this little snowy egret flew in and landed not five feet from me. I snapped a few quick photos then put my camera down to just watch them. It’s really neat how they shuffle their feet to stir up prey items. They caught a couple tiny fish, and then I quietly snuck away and left them to their morning hunting. #momentofzen #snowyegret #egrettathula #sepulvedabasin #sepulvedabasinwildlifereserve #sepulvedawildlifereserve https://www.instagram.com/p/CZa2aAMLBT5/?utm_medium=tumblr

This photo is the red-tailed hawk was taken at the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife refuge. This hawk was scavenging the recent burn area. The hawk is protected in the US by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. It is a bird of prey that breeds throughout most of North America. It is a predator of small mammals such as rodents, ground squirrels, other birds and reptiles. I’m not@sure what it’s eating in this photo. #hawk #redtailedhawk #balboa #lakebalboa #sepulveda #sepulvedadam #sepulvedabasin #sepulvedabasinwildlifereserve #wildlifephotography #bird #birdwatching #birdofprey #wildlife #fire #fires #californiafires #outdoorphotography #birdsofinstagram (at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFYitiWB8hq/?igshid=aq4bmvoylu3p

Keith took the first six of these photos, while the final four were snapped by me. Finally, we got to see some Canada geese not flying away overhead!
The pelican in pic five has just caught a fish and is in the process of tilting its head to swallow it.
I only knew what was especially interesting in photo 8 once I could see it at home. If you look on the left of wildlife island you’ll see a plate-shaped round and flat turtle. I knew from a previous visit that this is a leatherback turtle. Like the far less exotic pond turtles next to it the leatherback was dumped by an cruel and thoughtless owner (or their ancestors were).
I also included two more osprey photos that I took -- as if there weren’t enough already -- because I lucked out by capturing the osprey righting itself by putting out its wings. And in another, you can see a bite of fish in its beak. Yeah, it’s kind of gross, but cool at the same time.

I saw a Merlin for the first time today… briefly. And got nothing but blurry photos. Still, new bird! Then one of the photographers at the basin was super nice and encouraged me to photograph a lovely night heron sitting in the setting sun… and rather than successfully have a normal human conversation and maybe even learn a thing or two, I instead tripped over my words, made it weird, then quietly ghosted away. Keeping the spirit of World Introvert Day alive!! As I was leaving, this Red Tail was enjoying a meal in the last rays of sunlight, so I blew them a kiss then went along my merry way. #redtailedhawk #buteojamaicensis #sepulvedabasinwildlifereserve #sepulvedabasin #sepulvedawildlifereserve https://www.instagram.com/p/CYQGnT-rSzE/?utm_medium=tumblr

Adopt the pace of Nature, Her secret is patience. -Ralph Waldo Emerson When I slow down and step into rhythm with Nature, a beautiful sense of peace takes over. Patience is a key value in gardening, birdwatching, and hiking as we cannot rush a seed and we cannot rush the change of the seasons. We have a lovely nature reserve here in Lake Balboa, which is where this photo was taken. There are many species of water fowl at this reserve, and most of the time it is serene and peaceful. It is one of the many spots I love to go to around the area, one of my many little Nature escapes in LA. The quiet times I spend in Nature's rhythm are times where I have experienced relief, stillness and connection. I sometimes hear the answers to questions I have been pondering, and other times the songs of the birds carry my worries away (even if just momentarily). I experience moments of awe and wonderment, something so fleeting in this age of quick videos, short attention spans and scrolling. Time I decide to spend in nature is always beneficial to my mental and physical health. I put the phone away and become present with my surroundings. I make eye contact with and say hello to people and animals I see along the way. I stop to look at flowers and to touch the trunk of a tree. I lightly pick my favorite aromatic plants to smell along the way. The sun on my skin, the wind through my hair, the scent of the aromatic plants I've picked, and the sounds of the creatures bring my being to life, and I love it. ... #nataliecultivates #cultivatelovela #natureinla #losangelesnature #cultivatelove #cultivatepeace #walkinnature #ralphwaldoemerson #naturequote #quoteoftheday #patience #selfcare #takeahike #naturewalk #losangeles #lakebalboa #sepulvedabasinwildlifereserve #sepulvedabasin #lovenature #lovetheearth #youcangrow #growwithnature #naturemoment #naturephotography #naturereserve #waterfowl #peace (at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7J5MOJAflr/?igshid=1dpoo683ssr02

The bird in the first pic is a long-tailed grackle.
Generally, mcid-summer isn’t the best time for bird-watching at Sepulveda. It’s also better to get there early, especially when it gets hot. But it makes more sense logistically to do the Japanese Garden before Sepulveda.
You can’t picnic at the Japanese Garden.
Since we hiked the backend first, I was thoroughly exhausted by the time we stopped for a picnic. The broken foot boot always tires me out quickly. And our favorite shady picnic spot is not that close to the end if the trail (but beginning if you start on the backside first).
We were soon joined by a squirrel clearly waiting for a handout. We’ve seen that lots of times at Sepulveda, but this was the first time we’ve casually plop down, completely relaxed, as if there weren’t two giants a couple feet away.
Across from our picnic spot were some late-brooding cormorant couples. We watch as one dropped some twigs and grass to its mate and then helped him or her to use them to repair the nest.,
