hi sab!!💗💓💝💖💘💓 i saw your post on skincare and i honestly swear by the ordinary, it isn’t too expensive either and their products worked wonders for me. i use these every night and it got rid of the few spots i had so quickly and my skin always feels glowy and smooth!!
step one is around £15, step 2 is £8 and step 3 is £6… then just use any moisturiser after that! i use the charlotte tilbury magic cream but its around £80 so it is quite expensive but any cream works💞
eee hi honey! i’ve missed you so much! 🤍💖🫶💗💞💝💕💕😘💓💝💞
thank you so much for your help!!! i used to use the ordinary too, but i found i broke out way more, but that was probably an issue on my end (i definitely misused the products/used them too much). i have the glycolic acid toner! how do you apply it to your face? thank you very much once again! 🤍💗💖💕🫶🫶🥹😘🥹🥰😍
#chxrryhansen#sab’s cherry#sab answers#saving for later#i use vitamin c but i don’t think it does anything#sephora used to have this super glow serum and it was SO GOOD#but they discontinued it 😢😤

I did go to Sephora yesterday and the Internet wasn't lying or over exaggerating! I saw, in fact, MULTIPLE 8-12 year olds shopping there. although a lot/most of the actually youngest ones had parents trailing them.
specifically please pour one out for one dad trailing his preteen girls lmao. That man had the ultimate dad (or parent) expression that combined resigned exhaustion with supportiveness and searching bewilderment hoping for solidarity among adults. Or possibly rescue
.
Anyways one of them darted in front of me to reach/snatch at something she wanted because she was too nervous to say "excuse me," although I had already noticed her telling her mom what product she was looking for and was actively already stepping aside when she zoomed in to do this! I was making space and she literally was too excited to just wait three more seconds.
I mostly found the darting funny because she was clearly just afraid to talk to another person who wasn't her mom (nervous hand clasping, whispering to her mom's ear, hesitant hover back), but also like sweetie, your mom SHOULD encourage you to not snatch things or reach over people and say out loud "excuse me," even if it IS scary. I pre-emptively moved over when I saw what she was saying, she was just faster lol.
I will think on how to gently help them with this next time. I probably could've said something like "hey, it's okay to say excuse me so I can move over more for you! We can both look!"
This little girl DID open the box of what she was looking at which?? Why did her mom not tell her not to do that?? But she didn't unseal product.
Also this is what she wanted:
For anyone fascinated/horrified by the phenomenon of pre-teen girls being sold absurd skincare standards by TikTok, but who doesn't know much about the products involved:
This is a watermelon glow face serum. Serum is basically liquidy topical skincare products. They're often used for a more concentrated delivery of an active ingredient in your skincare. A little can go a long way.
In this case, the serum is boosting in order: (1) niacinamide, which is a type of vitamin B3 that helps your skin build keratin (for firmness), and the natural lipid barrier which helps you retain moisture. It can also help with inflammation/redness/coloration (acne, eczema, hyperpigmentation). (2) literal watermelon extract which idk says it delivers amino acids and hydration in the marketing. It's probably harmless. It's a good add for marketing, Glow recipe does fruit themed products. And (3) hyaluronic acid which could sound scary but is just a humectant that helps prepare skin to receive moisture, like in your moisturizer. (Fair warning: a straight hyaluronic acid serum is not enough on its own if your skin is super dehydrated. It will make your skin go all shriveled if you don't add moisturizer and you were super dry to start with. Ask me how I know)
Basically this angel faced & clear skinned child absolutely did not need anything to help acne or redness, but in this case it's a harmless product that will also help her skin stay moisturized in winter. It's pricey for what it is, but it's not meant for mature skin only thankfully. Basically if I had to choose something from Glow Recipe (which has cute, colorful bottles and fun fruit themes) for a little kiddo, this lands in the harmless to their skin pile.
She got the mini size which is $20
Her skin absolutely doesn't need this product. This is about marketing performative femininity and anti-aging towards girls and women. From an "everyone has skin to care for," perspective, "watermelon pink juice moisturizer" by the same brand is more relevant. Or the blueberry cleanser.
(most of the actual teenagers said things like "excuse me" if they needed to pass by and weren't rude to me at all. Like actual teenagers sans guardians and I had lots of normal sorry, excuse me, go ahead interactions between us. They're NOT all aggressive and rude.)
Idk idk I have such mixed feelings. I know I cared about the onset of acne at 11, 12... I hated the feeling of breaking out, not even just from a social perspective but like, the sensory feeling it produces in your skin. I pick at it even when I shouldn't. I still hate it! But to have that anxiety compounded a bajillion times by social media would've sucked.

A very late oddly specific ask…#9 and go!
OOOH SOUL YOU UNLEASHED THE BEAST!!! Thank you for sending this in, for someone who has a shit ton of skincare and makeup and it just sits around, I do like talking about it a lot 😅😅😅 Most of the time my skincare routine is lazy and is just sunscreen, eye cream, and mosturizer bc I'm rushing out the door, but this is what I do at night when I really commit to it. I'm like 1000000% sure this is probably a terrible routine and not at all in the right order but I haven't had any major issues yet (lol):
Toner - I use The Ordinary Glycolic Acid or the Pixi Glow Toner. Honestly both of them are bottles I've had lying around forever bc like I said, I'm lazy and usually forget to do toner loool
Face Oil - I use this Rose Face Oil I got for like $6 at Marshalls. I remember asking my mom if I could get it (as a grown 25 year old woman embarrassing), and she was like "stop wasting money" LMAO
Serum - not a real serum but I use The Ordinary Niacinimide bc a bih has acne and lots of hyperpigmentation on her face. I'm also just a big fan of how affordable the brand is
Vitamins - I use Vitamin C from the Ordinary bc again cheap and I have acne scars, but I honestly don't recommend this stuff. I have to apply it in this exact order or else it pills on my face and it looks like my skin is peeling. If anyone has any other Vitamin C recs lmk!
Eye Cream - I think I also use this eye cream that I got for like $7 at Marshalls. I can't tell you the brand because I rubbed off the lettering from using it so much, but it smells like honey and is very hydrating and pleasant
Sunscreen - I like the Innisfree sunscreen, it's super affordable and it doesn't leave a white cast on POC skin! k-beauty got me again lol
Moisturizer - nothing fancy, I have a huge bottle of Vanicream and it does the trick, so I'm not too bothered about changing it hehe!
Eye Cream (again) - this is rlly my only splurge skincare product and it's the glow balm from TULA! It brightens my undereyes and I keep it in the fridge so it feels nice and cool on my face (and it was founded by a desi woman woohoo)
Lips - I had this LaNeige sample pot of their lip mask that I got from Sephora, and I've scraped out every last bit over the past month or so (it just ran out this week). So now I'm using good ol Vaseline LMAO
Bonus layer - these are just for days where I don't wear makeup (most days), and I want to look like I'm not a zombie, but I like using either the Live Tinted HueGlow or the Glossier FutureDew all over my face to help seem like i'm alive
This actually was super fun and I'm sure you didn't ask for any of this, but that's my very in-depth skincare routine! 💜💜💜

Tell us about what skincare ingredients and products you love!
Okay, so I LOVE TALKING SKINCARE. This is a huge topic for me and I often write up a blog post once a year where i recommend skin care products. So here is this year’s recommendation! An insanelyyyyy long and detailed post nobody asked for!! HERE WE GO:
I am a long time skincare advocate...before it really blew up and people started really getting to know more about their products and ingredients. I’ve just always had very acne-prone skin so I’ve had to pay attention to what products and ingredients I was using and how their formulas worked for me. As a result, over the years I tried A SHIT TON of products. Many expensive, fancy, high end, etc. But now I have my skincare routine down to a much more manageable and quality ingredient list. Obviously everyone’s skin is different...but this is what I use on a regular basis these days:
Serums:
- Krave Beauty’s Great Barrier Relief Serum: Honestly, this is THE SHIT. My favorite moisturizing serum to really help balance your skins hydration barrier and stay hydrated. It’s thicker and almost feels like a moisturizer. It’s so great. - The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Drops: Niacinamide is an amazing ingredient for your skin and can help a tremendous amount with clearing the skin, resurfacing, fading scars, and more. This really does a good job helping with my acne, so i really recommend to anyone. And I am pretty sure it’s like $5 cause it’s from the ordinary.
Moisturizers:
- CeraVe Moisturizing Cream: It’s a very cheap drug store moisturizer that has good, clean ingredients. After using fancy moisturizers for years, I finally gave into my dermatologist’s recommended lotion. LOL. They do have a lotion that is lighter, but my skin tends to be dryer, especially in the winter so I use the cream not the lotion. It’s thicker. (For high end junkies--it’s like comparing Drunk Elephant’s LaLa Retro to their Protini cream). I also sometimes throw in drops of a marula oil into this cream if I am really dry. Make myself a little face smoothie.
Eye/Lip Creams:
- Mario Badescu Ceramide Herbal Eye Cream: Now honestly, I still haven’t found my perfect eye cream yet...but I have used this one for a few years now. It moisturizes well and is cheap to buy. It’s probs not the most effective but at least I am moisturizing my eye area. One day I will take on more eye creams that target certain things, but that is one day when I have money to spend lmao. -Glossier Bubblewrap Lip/Eye Cream: This is a very unique moisturizing product that is meant for sensitive skin like your eye area and lips. It does say it plumps a bit, which I don’t ever feel a plumping effect, but I do love to use it on my lips. It’s so moisturizing and is kind of like using a primer before you apply chapstick or lipstick.
Exfoliators:
- Glossier Solution: The OG chemical exfoliant I tried and loved. These types of products aren’t great for everyone, and may have to be used less or more depending on skin type, but as an acne-prone human, I love a chemical exfoliant. This works and lasts a long while.
- Krave Beauty’s Kale-Lalu_AHA: Another chemical exfoliant. I recently tried this one because I do believe Krave Beauty uses better ingredients than Glossier Skin typically does (no shade tho). They were close in price, so I made the switch and have enjoyed the results so far. The packaging is also beautiful.
- Dr. Brant Microdermabrasion Exfoliant: This is NOT a chemical peel, this has aluminum oxyde crystals in it to polish the skin like a normal exfoliant would. It also has a lot of ingredients that help renew and refresh the skin while exfoliating. Now this product is HELLA expensive...I only have it because I once bought it for way cheaper when I had a subscription box. I don’t know if I would spend the full $80 bucks on it, but your skin does feel smooth.
- Tatcha The Deep Polish: This is an enzyme powder that you mix with water and exfoliate fro there. It is from when I used to buy the highest end products in hopes it would help my skin. It is pricey, but again does leave your skin feeling soft. So I rotate it in from time to time.
Masks:
- The Ordinary’s AHA 30% BHA 2% Peeling Solution: AKA THE BLOOD MASK. Now hugely popular on social media, the “blood mask” is a chemical mask that peels off dead skin and essentially works to eliminate the top layers of your skin and begin rejuvenating a fresher layer for softer, healthier, plumper skin. I do this once a week and it is way cheap. I can compare it to Drunk Elephant’s Sukari Babyfacial and it definitely beats that expensive version.
- Glow Recipe’s Avocado Melt Sleeping Mask: This is an overnight moisturizing mask that you simply wash off in the morning. It really helps lock in moisture and feels nice on the skin. I use this when I am feeling really dry.
- Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask: This one you have to mix the dry clay mixture with water and apple cider vinegar to create a goo that you can then let dry on your face. It may be intense for some, but I find it really helps dry out my acne spots and reduce redness in my skin. It’s always a fun one to do with other people too because you do have to prepare it. Good sleepover activity.
- GlamGlow Bubble Sheet Mask: This one is honestly more so used for when I am traveling and want to keep a mask on hand or when I am having a fun girls night or something. It’s a bubble mask--so to me that just means fun. I typically avoid sheet masks (unless I am traveling) because I think you end up throwing a way a lot of product you are paying for. But this one is fun, it’s cute, it’s different. I don’t notice a huge change in my skin tbh, but it is a fun activity for girls night.
Honorable Mention/Random Products:
- Youth to the People’s Kale and Green Tea Superfood Cleanser: I stayed away from this one for a long time because it’s expensive and I could rationalize buying such an expensive cleanser, but I got a gift card to Sephora and finally decided to try it. And ya know what?? I guess I am fancy now because I really love it. It does not overly strip your skin at all, and for the first time in my life I really know what that means. It’s so great, it smells so good. Ugh. Can’t get enough of this bougie bitch of a face wash.
- The Inkey List Retinol Cream: A recent purchase, but I have enjoyed seeing the results. Everyone imo should be using an eye cream and a retinol. This is a nice introduction to retinol, so I recommend to those looking for one.
- Glossier Mint Balm Dot Com Chapstick: THIS AGAIN--IS THE SHIT. Many will say they would never spend more than two bucks but one tube of their’s is seven bucks and it is WORTH IT. I buy the three pack once a year and i’m good. This is the best chapstick you will literally ever use. Fucking buy it. If I could tell you only three products that are a must from this list this would be one of them. (the other two would be great barrier relief and the kale cleanser)
- Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: I like this lip mask, it’s not needed everynight, but I do like to use a lip exfoliant (made or buy one, whatever) and then use this to really retextures my lips.
- Bag Balm: Now this is a very unusual product to recommend lmaooo. Originally, bag balm is used for chapped cow udders on farms--which is how I discovered it. Farmers eventually noticed that it helped your skin retain moisture and repair cracked skin in their hands. So now it is known as a good thick ass cream for hands and feet. Now this shit is again--used on cows originally, so the formula feels thick and greasy. I like putting it on at night and letting it soak in for a while as I lay on my phone. It really works--I swear to you.
- Sagely CBD Cream: I use their relief and recovery crea which smells like lavender and has a cooling effect when applied to the skin (kinda like biofreeze or icyhot would). This is only a 50mg CBD lotion, but I do like it.
- Mad Ritual CBD Muscle Recovery Balm: Now this is thick and definitely a balm, not a cream. It is much higher strength though, so I break it out when needed and a little goes a long way. This one is 200mg of CBD.
- Mario Badescu Drying Lotion: This drying lotion is now so popular but has been a staple of mine for at least a decade now. You leave it on over night and it really does dry up and reduce zit size. Helps a lot. There must be a reason why super models are told to use this shit before a runway show.
- Tatcha The Essence: Essences are a new and kind of weird thing, kinda like priming the skin to allow for better absorption of a product. Now this product I received as a Christmas gift one year, but I am pretty sure it’s like $100...breaking the bank as always, tatcha. Anyway, it does allow for better absorption of products and feels light and refreshing on the skin. One bottle has lasted me two years now. I don’t know if I would recommend it, but I do use it somewhat regularly and it does make you feel like a bougie bitch.
AND THAT IS THE END. Sorry that was soooo long. But like I said, I do a write up once a year of my skincare products anyway. So there you guys have it!! If you have any questions at all about your skin or skincare routine , honestly hit me up. Over the years I have slowly has friends come to me. Once I collect all of the I will have all of the infinity stones lmao.
#asks#skin care#mary's 2021 recommendations#personal#life of mary#honestly if this doesn’t get noted I swear to fucking god#lmao

I don't like wearing makeup so much but I do LOVE that it feels luxurious to have in ur bathroom cabinet... the act of putting it on in the mirror... and anyways I've spent some $$ over quarantine and now im gonna release my favs. lets pretend im an influencer ok.
ULTA Youthful Glow Foundation Serum Drops
Good dupe for the ILIA foundation/ sunscreen serum. mine was on sale for $8. I like a more sheer/ skin-blurring effect than actual foundation (my face is red as hell) and u can just slap this on.
Burberry Eye Colour Contour - Rosewood No. 112
These are on sale at Nordstrom Rack last time I checked. eyeshadow tends to be patchy and hard to blend for me, but this is really easy to apply, and is super blendable/ creamy after application until it sets and then it does not budge. If you are super pale this rosewood is a nice lit-within shade.
Glossier Cream Blush: Cloud Paint - Storm
Instead of a contour I pat on a little storm on my cheek hollows. I’ve resisted buying glossier bc it seemed expensive to me but u literally use a microscopic amount at a time, I picture having this for another 5 years lmao.
Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara
I have straight, blonde and super fine eye lashes. My mom got this for me for my bday and at first I was like “boo I wanted a Sephora brand” but this is actually super nice! it is a very “wet” mascara but it doesn't smudge or get spidery ever (flakes off after 24 hours which I only know bc I sleep in it.. oops)
ROUGE COCO Chanel Lipstick - 434 Mademoiselle
So technically I bought this when I was in 8th grade for a dance (at the time it was a $30 tube which like yikes) and I still have it today. Which is gross of me but come on. It’s just the best shade. A rouge-y rose with white gold undertones. I think Charlotte Tilburry Pillowtalk wants what this lipstick has.
STILA Liquid Eye Shadow - Cloud
This is fun bc u can put it on thick for a mega-watt highly metallic Foil editorial look or u can dot it on and blend it out to have loony tunes female character eyelids. U can find this at TJ Maxx for $5. I get everything on sale I would be crazy not to.

I know you’ve answered this before but I can’t find the ask😭 but what’s your skincare routine? I’ve got super dry and sensitive skin so I don’t know where to start and was wondering if you have any product recommendations??
hyaluronic acid is a must, even if you don’t have dry skin your face will love you if you use this. my favourites are the ordinary one and the glossier super bounce serum
for moisturiser, my skin doesn’t agree with thick dense creams, so i use water based gel ones instead. i use the clinique moisture surge everyday, and i’ve used the glam glow waterburst as well, but a cheaper version is the garnier moisture bomb, day and night creams
face oils really make a difference if you have veryy dry skin, merula oil from drunk elephant is amazing but overpriced, so i use the ordinary squalene oil and it’s just as good
and lastly, face masks really do help. i love the revolution skincare warming gel face mask, the glam glow thirsty mud, the kiehl’s ultra facial overnight mask, and most sheet masks out there (garnier, holika holika, yes to, sephora etc), they save me when i need a bit more
i’ve said a lot lmao, i hope this helps! :)

What's your beauty routine/approach? :)
I’ve always been a big proponent of using sunscreen, and it’s served me well. I’m twenty-eight now, and facially, I recently got mistaken for a high school graduate thanks to taking care of my skin. I mostly chock that up to applying sunscreen religiously since I was twelve, despite having cystic hormonal acne due to endometriosis.
Both my grandmother and my mother are very pale and Swedish/Scottish, and both had skin cancer issues from lying in sun back in the sixties when sunscreen protection wasn’t a big thing. So my mum was always a really strong supporter of sunscreen and staying out of the sun (even though I play beach volleyball competitively (when not in a pandemic), I’m always the weirdo wearing long sleeves and more layers than necessary/reapplying sunscreen). I don’t want to be a victim of skin cancer either, since it obviously runs in my family, so I’ve always been very strict in terms of just sweating it out in more layers of clothing, rather than wearing a bikini or a sports bra to the beach (unless it’s 30+- then my Canadian ass can’t handle it and it’s hat and religious application all the way (including hands) xD).
Besides that, as I get older, really you learn that less is more, and too much bad makeup application can age you negatively. Especially with COVID-19 and people only seeing half your face at any given time, I really just focus on a good skincare routine that doesn’t flair up my sensitive, acne-prone skin, and is free of unnecessary fragrances and irritants. I tend towards K-Beauty and French beauty (glass skin), as well as more traditional Swedish beauty (think Ingrid Bergman), because all three culturally focus on creating a solid base and treating the skin, and letting your skin and your natural beauty shine through.
That’s why the one thing I do splurge on in terms of cosmetics is Dermalogica’s Special Cleansing Gel. It’s 53 dollars from Sephora in Canada, which is expensive, but it’s the only face wash I’ve had that completely neutralises my endometriosis-driven hormonal acne (along with antiseptic medication and birth control pills), and a little goes a long way (I can nurse a 53 dollar bottle for three months. Presuming you’re washing your face morning and night times thirty-one days, sixty one times three, that’s 183 washes for 53 dollars, which pretty much works out to 30 cents a wash. A solid investment in my books.
I also use both Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion for zits (cheap and the best for zits), Benton’s Aloe Propolis Soothing Gel for a moisturiser (propolis is used as an antiseptic so it’s great for acne-prone skin), and if I’m feeling fancy, Klairs Midnight Blue Youth Activating Serum. I’m only twenty-eight, but I’m a big believer in preventative skincare. (Another great moisturiser I used in the past and sometimes use as a body moisturiser besides just plan aloe gel is Clinique’s gel moisturiser for your face. It’s light, a mid-priced moisturiser, and you get a ton of product for a mid-line price).
The other thing I focus on spending more money on is sunscreen, although there are some great cheaper buys in the K-Beauty field. I’ve used the Innisfree No Sebum sunscreen in the past, which is anywhere from 8-12 dollars depending on where you get it- it’s leaves a slight white cast on my face, so it’s probably not the best for POC, but I can usually blend that out with makeup or a slight bronzer. I’d honestly rather look paler than I already am and have solid sun protection that doesn’t make me break out, than not have protection at all.
I also just purchased the Bare Minerals fragrance-free Complexion Rescue which is a great alternative. It’s another Sephora purchase, so it’s more expensive, but I bought it at the beginning of the year when the sunscreen I usually use was weirdly making me break out, and I mix it with NYX’s Bare with Me Skin Veil to create a naturally glowing look that is a little less than foundation (the Complexion rescue honestly doesn’t cover up scarring or pigmentation super-well, so that’s why I mix the NYX in with it- but it’s an easy one step for SPF in the morning). It also comes in several shade ranges, and has SPF 30.
Lastly, the sunscreen I use for my body is Bioderma Photoderm SPF 50+. It’s great, a thin layer of sunscreen, and doesn’t provide a cast. And makeup removal is Bioderma’s Micellar Water in Sensibio if I’m wearing heavy makeup (which I usually never do anymore). Otherwise, I just wash it off with the Dermalogica.
In terms of makeup in quarantine, I really look for double-duty products, or keep it to a super-light bronzer so I have some colour to my face, but I don’t look like I’m trying too hard. Maybelline’s City Bronzer in 100 is a great bronzer that’s super-cheap at eight bucks, not orange, and honestly I find it better for my super-pale skin than anything comparable at Mecca or Sephora (and trust me, I’ve always been a fan of a light bronzer- Too Faced or any of those more expensive brands have nothing on this in terms of looking like a natural outdoorsy slight ‘healthy’ tan). I also just ordered Wander Beauty’s Double-Date Cheek and Lip Tint as an easy double duty product for the next couple of months.
(Oh, and if you want a holy grail foundation/concealer, the best options are Laura Mercier. Also fragrance-free, and although more expensive, you can mix a bit with your Bare Minerals if you want a bit more coverage and it goes a long way. I recommend their radiance foundation, as well as their moisturising foundation, even for people with more acne-prone skin. If I want to actually wear foundation, Laura Mercier covers any lingering acne brilliantly, and actually looks like skin, rather than covering it up with horrible layers of product.)
#beauty#personal#anonymous#I tend to highlight my broader higher cheekbones if I choose a feature to highlight#and possibly frame up my thicker brows#but I usually don't wear eye makeup and definitely not lip besides lip balm since covid

Idk if you remember, but I sent you an ask a while back about skincare and you gave your recommendations but the ones you suggested were way too expensive for me (you recommended drunken monkey products) so I wasn’t able to buy them.(I still have your answer saved for someday when I can afford it though, lol.) So my question is,do you recommend any face packs or masks to get rid of acne/pimples and their scars? Please try to suggest affordable ones but anything you say will be valuable! Thank you!
hi, haha. sorry—my skin is SUPER SUPER sensitive and while i am lucky in that i don’t often get acne, if i try a product with too much scent or alcohol (which is in most cheaper ones) my whole face will turn into a mildly itchy tomato. so i’m kinda forced to stick with my more expensive faves because i’m very hesitant to try new products and cause an allergic reaction. so…i may not be the best person to ask about products!
i will say tho that drunk elephant sells sample bottles of almost all their products, usually in sets of 2 or 3, and they last fairly long. depending on how much you use it and the shelf life of the product (like vitamin d) it’s sometimes worth it to just get the minis. and they’re usually about $24 dollars for two or so. just a thought!
that being said, i will try to offer some alternatives.
for pimples:
what i’d one day like to try:
the dr. jartt micro blemish patch supposedly works really well and they’re $16 for six patches. they are kind of spiky (sounds scary, or i thought so anyway) and pierce the pimple to break it down. lady at sephora said it felt like a quick pinch, barely. if i next get a cystic pimple that just will not budge, i’ll try these.
what i did try:
the “peace out” acne patch for a pimple that would not. go. away. and i wouldn’t say that it helped at all. arguably, it kind of just created some discoloration, but i could’ve worn it too long. wouldn’t buy it again and don’t reach for them first if i get the signs of a pimple.
for acne scars:
these are best treated with a retinol, and i’d say that this is one to invest in if you can, or at least research carefully. it’s an acid, so you want to buy something that is formulated to know what it’s doing.
what i’d like to try:
a brand i’ve heard good things about in terms of price and product: the ordinary! it’s ACTUALLY affordable—shockingly so—and i’ve seen some pretty good reviews for their products besides just serums for scars. when i next venture to sephora, i’m going to check these out, because the price is so goddamn low. i’m almost suspicious. but the reviews are fairly good! i have to do more research on this brand myself, but the gist i get is that it’s a cheap alternative to a brand like drunk elephant. worth looking into. and they have a whole line, so they might cover everything you’re looking for.
what i tried:
again, you can try the mini pack with drunk elephant on the fairly cheap—it’s the only retinol i’ve tried personally, and it’s meant to pair with a soothing facial oil, so the two kind of balance one another out. i wouldn’t say i noticed extreme results, but i was going for brightening, not scar relief.
for general care:
i plug this every goddamn time i get asked about skincare, but badger is a small family company out of like vermont or maine, i think, and their face wash is AMAZING. it’s a cleansing oil, so it won’t strip your skin of it’s natural oils, rather add to them. you get a wonderful little glow from it and none of that stretchy skin, tingly feeling from more soap-based cleansers. and it’s CHEAP! like $18 a bottle that will last you possibly up to 6 months. (more like 3 for me, i use it morning and night) it just added a lot of moisture and glow and plump to my naturally dry and red-prone skin. highly recommend.
the glossier skincare products are all very meh except for the galaxy mask pack—i do really enjoy the clay mask immediately followed by a long soothing moisturizer mask. i do 15-20 min of the clay and then like 40+ min of the moon mask. i’m not really 100% it does anything, like at all, but it’s a fun, nice thing to do after a long day at least. their serums i’m even less convinced do anything, but i have one i’m finishing out and…..i mean, it doesn’t hurt? generally i feel like glossier’s quality has shifted a bit though.
(tangentially; the aztec clay brand is very hit or miss. it can cure all acne, or cause someone to have a horrible break out. cheap, generally beloved, but research it carefully! i will probably never try it)
lastly—i don’t know what your insurance options are, but if you can, getting to a dermatologist and getting an actual RX cream for pimples could really help you. i have a spot cream that tends to work better than any trendy patch or expensive mask, but i only have to deal with occasional pimples, not cystic acne, so it may not help everyone. but it was cheap because of my insurance plan. if you have that option, i’d say look into it!

Peter Philips, Creative And Image Director, Dior Beauty
A little something to add to your “answers to questions you never asked” file: When I was six, I was obsessed with baloney. Not metaphorical baloney—not trying to be cute here—but actual baloney. Loved it, couldn’t get enough of it. I declared my deep appreciation of this true mystery meat to my parents nearly every day, and lo, just like that, it got promoted to “lunchbox regular.” Something about the tangy harmony of salt and nitrates really whet my appetite. And then after a few months of this demanding behavior, I got sick of it—the smell alone made me want to hurl. So I stopped eating it, and haven’t eaten it since (although I hear that hotdogs are, in fact, simply baloney in a tube).
Bet you’re wondering what this has to do with beauty—good question, thanks for keeping me honest. The thought I had about my sudden aversion to baloney plays out in a similar way when it comes to beauty. The beauty version of “Did I eat so much baloney that my body rejected it?” sounds like this: “Have I used the same moisturizer for so long that my face no longer accepts it as valid?” Or, “If I don’t switch up my shampoo and conditioner every once in a while, my hair looks dull and sad.” The product switch-up notion is a tale as old as time. And while it may have been good for scamming your mom to load her Sephora cart with a little something for you when you were in high school, it's not clear if the argument holds any water at all. Fact or fiction? That’s the question. So, after years of watching MythBusters with my brother (who, by the way, conveniently could never find the remote control when that guy with the beret emerged within view), I’m ready to do a little myth-busting of my own.
Myth: Other than the products mentioned above, I can use the same beauty products forever. False. Let’s not get crazy here. You can’t go through life using the same stuff forever. Sometimes a seasonal change will force your hand—that heavy duty moisturizer for the winter is probably better left on your shelf in the summer. And then there’s the matter of expiration dates… Flip over your serums, creams, and cleansers. Every single one of ‘em should have a cylinder with a number inside printed on the label. That number is how long your product is meant to last. Just keep in mind that we’re not talking spoiled eggs here. That number has a bit of give, but just don’t get too crazy and use it way beyond the expiration date. Use your very wise judgment!
So explain to me why my favorite cream in the whole wide world isn’t cutting it anymore!
It is! It’s just that you’ve gotten used to the results. When you first try something new, your skin reacts to how it would with any new experience—it changes. Ideally for the better, and if not then it’s time to move on. But when you’ve been doing the same thing every day for months...years...after a while it’s easy for your cream and whatnot to start to feel like it’s not doing anything special. Here’s a remedy for that. Stop using the product in question for a month, about the time it takes for your skin cells to turnover. What do you see? An improvement? A decline? If it’s the former, then it really is time for you to switch to something new. But the latter? Eh, you’re fine.
Myth: You need to take a break from a small, select group of products from time to time. True. There are a few products that require a break. Got eczema? Then you probably know a bit about topical steroids, and how prolonged use can build up a resistance to the steroids’ effects. Silicone products are another group you should look out for. Silicones deliver a smoothing effect to hair and skin, and when the creams or conditioners are not thoroughly washed off, the silicones tend to hang around and, in turn, dull your hair or limit your skin’s capacity to look fresh and glowy. The fix? When it comes to your hair, switch out to a clarifying shampoo every month or so (only you can determine the cadence to switch in and out, so experiment a little). And for your face, give your skin a break once a week with an exfoliant. Whether that’s P50, a gentle rice scrub, or a weekly peel, is up to you.
The Gentle Exfoliation “Smooth foundation starts with smooth skin. I always start by doing a light exfoliation. Lately, I’ve been using Pixi Glow Peel Pads—the glycolic acid helps slough off any dead skin cells on the surface. For dryness around the nose and picked-at blemishes, I take a small amount of Homeoplasmine on a cotton swab and gently massage into the scab or flaky skin. In most instances, this is enough to completely remove it and smooth it out. It’s important not to overload the skin before makeup. The more products you’re mixing and matching, the higher the chance certain ingredients won’t get along with each other. This is what causes that weird rolling of product you often see. Focus on skincare that absorbs, and doesn’t sit on top of the skin—I almost always use Eminence Facial Recovery Oil.” —Dana Delaney
The Winter Skin Fix “Super hydrating moisturizer is the best base for any foundation, as healthy, moisturized skin always gives that extra beautiful luster—it’s a glow that lasts all day. You’ll end up using less actual makeup when your skin looks this good. Models come in super dehydrated in the winter, so I have a few creams in the rotation. One that works on everyone is Avène Crème For Intolerant Skin. It’s super hydrating and soothing, and it has very few ingredients, so it works on even the most sensitive skin. For those who love a traditional primer, you can’t get any better than Laura Mercier’s classic Foundation Primer. It’s the smoothest, most lightweight primer that never pills and doesn’t set the foundation too fast.” —Ingeborg
There are many dimensions to makeup application—precisely three, in fact. Makeup in the 2-D world is reserved for your screen, and in the 1-D world, it’ll cost you $7.80 or best available offer. But make up for real life is three dimensional, and skin in real life has pores, bumps, and wrinkles. There’s no way around it! A great makeup application takes that texture into account—makeup won’t look smooth if the surface under it isn’t smooth. The right prep routine for you could be an AHA, a dewy moisturizer, or a mattifying primer—makeup artists use them all. Here’s how seven take dry, winter skin and make it smooth, plump, and makeup-ready. You’ll probably need less coverage, and your makeup will last longer without flaking. Here’s to looking good, from all angles.

The Hot Tip “I start by cleansing the skin with Aveda Botanical Kinetics Radiant Skin Refiner to smooth everything out. I then apply Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate from Kiehl’s, which plumps the skin and helps it retain moisture. I finish with Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream, a rich cream with minimal ingredients. Using my fingertips, I work in Laura Mercier Radiance Primer. The warmth from your fingers works well to evenly apply the product and helps melt the product to your skin. You don’t want it to feel like it's hovering above the surface. I also do this with makeup—I warm the product on the back of my hands before applying.” —Mimi Quique
The One-Two Punch “The key to flawless smooth foundation is what you prep with underneath. I am a big fan of adding moisture and tackling excess shine before applying the base. I use a hydrating primer like Hourglass' hydrating serum all over, and then a mattifying serum like MAC Refined Zone down the T-zone. This ensures that no areas grab and look too heavy or dry—it will also give up to 24-hour wear.” —Lynsey Alexander
The Sensitive Solution “The most important step in my makeup routine is actually skincare. I tend to have dry, sensitive skin so I have to make sure that the products I'm using will not only last for 12 hours a day but also not strip my skin of its natural moisture. I'll apply a small amount of hyaluronic acid—I use Vichy Aqualia Thermal Face Serum—because it helps my skin absorb the cream better. I'll finish my skincare prep with a light but powerful moisturizer like Youth To The People Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream. I love this moisturizer because it doesn't pill up under my foundation, and contains pentapeptides that calm the skin and reduce irritation. Next, I'll warm up a dime-size amount of liquid foundation along with a small dot of moisturizer in my palms—the moisturizer helps thin the foundation out so it’s not as heavy. The heat of my hands helps to ensure an even blend and smoother finish.”—Jenn Collins
The Poppin’ Lock “What I would do is exfoliate and make sure that the skin has had adequate moisturizing. I'll sometimes even use a jade or rose quartz roller to stimulate collagen or do a light facial massage while applying moisturizer. When using makeup you want to stay away from things that are too active—wrinkle creams and things that are great for nighttime. In the daytime, a mattifying moisturizer is almost like a primer. Stippling with a wet Beautyblender is the best way to layer on the foundation. I like the Alleven Hyaluronic Airbrush Foundation or L'Oréal Freshwater Foundation, which are lightweight. If you apply your foundation while your skin is slightly damp from your moisturizer, it will blend together in a really organic way. As your moisturizer dries, your foundation locks in. ” —Sir John
The Full Shebang “I love to do a multi-step regimen to prep the skin for a smooth, long-lasting makeup application. I apply Nars Hydrating Toner on clean skin to gently exfoliate dead skin cells. Then, I restore moisture and radiance with Caudalie Beauty Elixir spray and Sisley Ecological Compound massaged into the skin. I use a facial tissue sheet to blot off excess skincare that hasn’t absorbed. To smooth out any texture or larger pores, I tap a small amount of MAC Skin Refined Zone Treatment with fingers. I prime the skin with Le Maquillage Pro Makeup Mixer which helps makes any foundation malleable and looking just like skin.” —Alana Wright Read More...

19 beauty products that are worth the money
CNN —
Whether we’re covering expert-recommended beauty tools under $25 or the best Amazon beauty look-alikes under $30, we’re no strangers to the fact that high-quality beauty doesn’t always have to break the bank.
That being said, sometimes a little splurge can make a world of a difference. “Affordable drugstore makeup can be really amazing,” shares London-based makeup artist Jenny Coombs. “But I would definitely invest in high-quality foundations and concealers, considering they’re applied to your entire face.”
Mia Jones, a makeup artist based in New York who’s worked with celebs like Gigi Hadid and Mariah Carey, echoes that sentiment. “Skin care and complexion products are always worth the splurge,” she says. “What you use every day and what comes into direct contact with your skin should be as quality as possible.”
Whether you’re looking to treat yourself to a game-changing skin care tool, gift someone a truly luxurious makeup item or invest in skin care made from only the best ingredients, we’ve rounded up 19 splurge-worthy beauty and skin care goodies for you to choose from. All of these have been recommended by makeup artists, hairstylists and “skinfluencers,” or they’ve been researched and tested by us.
“I love getting microcurrent facials like the one at Joanna Vargas salon,” shares Molly Greenwald, an LA-based makeup artist. She recommends using a handheld device at home to achieve similar results. “They really work in lifting and filling the facial muscles and skin instantly as well as cumulatively over time.”
Greenwald specifically calls out the NuFace Trinity Facial Trainer Device, a microcurrent treatment device that helps to rejuvenate your skin. For a little background on how this actually works, our body’s natural current starts to slow as we age, which leads to many skin concerns associated with aging — like sagging and wrinkles. The microcurrents in this device mimic the natural current of our bodies, which when activated work to tone facial muscles, resulting in bouncier, firmer skin.
Dermstore
iS Clinical Active Serum
“I don’t know a person that has tried it that isn’t in love with this multibeneficial serum,” shares Greenwald. “It helps with wrinkles, acne and the appearance of pores while also soothing and evening the skin tone.”
While many serums boast specific ingredients that help with specific skin concerns like dullness, acne or dryness, this one is a self-proclaimed “multitasking face serum” with benefits that range from anti-aging to brightening and even acne prevention.
Sephora
Sunday Riley Good Genes Lactic Acid Treatment
This lactic acid treatment from Sunday Riley is a fan favorite and Underscored editor favorite, particularly when it comes to plumping and brightening. Lactic acid is one of the most hydrating alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which just means that in addition to exfoliating your skin to reveal a smoother complexion (fighting dead skin cells that lead to a range of skin concerns like bumps, dullness and acne), the active ingredient also moisturizes your skin, keeping it luminous and bouncy.
The addition of licorice as an ingredient (and its associated brightening properties) can enhance your skin’s radiance and lead to the reduction of spots and discoloration, something reviewers love about this treatment. One reviewer writes that “active exfoliants have been dismal because most of them irritate my sensitive skin. Good Genes has turned that all around! It hydrates and gently exfoliates without irritating.”
Sephora
La Mer The Lip Balm
You’re probably thinking what we’re thinking — a lip balm that costs $70? That can’t be serious. But if you’re familiar with the luxury skin care brand La Mer, the price tag may come as less of a surprise. This mint-scented and velvety soft lip balm calms and conditions your lips while supporting their natural moisture barrier and helping to protect against environmental damage.
It’s free of sulfates, parabens and tons of other less than ideal ingredients, and it boasts La Mer’s signature Miracle Broth — a formulation that aims to help restore your skin to its healthiest and most radiant form.
Reviewers acknowledge the steep price tag but are convinced that despite the cost, it’s worth every penny. One person writes that they have “tried every form of lip moisturizer on the planet, and this blows everything else out of the water.”
Sephora
Tatcha Violet-C Radiance Mask
Tatcha is known for creating some of the most effective skin care on the market, and this creamy vitamin C mask is no exception. Rios credits this mask for keeping her skin glowing, noting its luxurious texture and super-hydrating benefits.
Formulation-wise, it’s packed with rich, high-quality ingredients, from two different types of vitamin C to an AHA complex derived from seven different fruit extracts, and the brand’s signature Hadasei-3 Complex, a proprietary blend of “double-fermented Uji green tea, Akita rice and Mozuku algae.” All of this works together, resulting in a mask that leaves your skin instantly softer, smoother and more radiant. There are also some more long-term effects — the vitamin C helps to prevent signs of aging, while the AHA complex works to improve overall skin texture over time.
Sephora
Gisou Honey-Infused Hair Perfume
A hair perfume may not be in everyone’s beauty rotation, but this option might just convince you that it should be. “This honey-infused perfume is ethically sourced,” shares Yamga, and draws on ingredients from Gisou founder Negin Mirsalehi’s father’s bee gardens. “The combination of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants assist in maintaining your hair’s moisture while also leaving behind a beautiful floral scent.”
Simply spray on your hair after styling for a summer-perfect scent that will linger throughout the day, and of course provide your hair with those benefits Yamga mentions. Just be sure to use a light hand, since a little goes a long way.
Nordstrom
Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer Broad Spectrum SPF 25
“This tiny little stick is really all you need in a pinch when it comes to complexion,” shares Greenwald. “The high-quality pigments cover and smooth even the most challenging areas and can be buffed out on the entirety of the skin for a soft focus foundation.”
And she acknowledges that while it’s a big price for what seems like a really small product, anyone who has tried it would attest that it’s well worth its price. Not only do reviewers love the full coverage effect of this concealer, they also love how moisturizing it is. Concealers are notorious for looking cakey or emphasizing dryness, especially throughout the day — but not this product. Because a little goes a long way, the small amount actually lasts quite a while (one reviewer notes up to a year). And the formulation includes SPF 25, which is always a big bonus in our book.
Sephora
Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate Face Oil
“I use this lightweight oil at night,” shares Rios, “and wake up with my skin looking fresh and dewy.” The Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate Face Oil is one of our all-time favorite skin care products as well, because it’s so simple yet so effective. With ingredients like lavender essential oil and evening primrose oil, the formula works to restore your skin overnight so you wake up with visibly brighter, radiant and, of course, moisturized skin.
If you’re wondering how that actually works, it turns out our skin actually repairs itself while we sleep. Targeting our skin with a beneficial, high-quality oil like this one while it’s already going through those natural restorative functions only helps it along that process.
Sabrina Yamani Yamga, an award-winning hairstylist based in Chicago, is a big fan of the Dyson Airwrap, which we’ve reviewed in its entirety here. “This little device comes with so many attachments that work fast,” she shares, “and uses intelligent heat control technology to give you that salon blowout look without having to leave home.”
While the price tag is high, this product truly performs in a way that no other product on the market does. To start, you’re not styling your hair with the same type of heat as a standard iron or hair dryer, which means that you’re doing way less damage to your hair. The other noteworthy feature, and something that Yamga calls out, is the number and variety of attachments. This product isn’t just a fancy hair curler — it comes with two different sized curling barrels, three different brushes for that easy blowout look and a prestyling dryer, an attachment that achieves a similar result to that of the equally if not more popular Dyson Supersonic.
If you consider the price of all those products combined, the cost of this one product seems a bit less daunting. In addition to all those features, the Dyson Airwrap is just a joy to use — you don’t have to worry about burning your fingers, it’s much lighter than other hair dryers and stylist tools, and the process of doing your hair is just way more comfortable overall.
Nordstrom
Trish McEvoy Beauty Balm Instant Solutions BB Cream SPF 35
We’re big fans of an all-in-one product, and this BB cream from Trish McEvoy does it all. It primes your skin, evens out its tone and simultaneously hydrates your skin while controlling oil. Like many luxury makeup products, the skin care benefits of this product are built in — peptides in the formulation help to improve your skin’s texture, while SPF coverage helps to prevent skin damage and aging caused by UVA and UVB rays.
Unlike other similar creams, this option provides much more coverage than a tinted moisturizer, and it’s definitely buildable for anywhere from a medium to full coverage.
Dermstore
By Terry Baume de Rose Lip Care
“I’ve been using this for years,” shares Mireya Rios, an actress and content creator with over 3.8 million followers on TikTok, where she shares the best of beauty. “It’s expensive, but it keeps my lips hydrated, and it smells amazing too.”
This rich lip balm features a suite of nourishing and reparative ingredients, from essential rose wax, which works to soothe and restructure your lips, to floral oils that help nourish and moisturize them, to bio-ceramides, which smooth the skin while providing anti-aging benefits. While it’s perfect as an everyday lip balm, its formulation is also aimed at helping your lips bounce back from periods of dryness or damage.
Dermstore
Luzern Laboratories Serum Absolut V15
“Vitamin C is an integral part of skin care,” shares Jones. “It reverses sun damage, brightens [and] reduces pigmentation.”
She recommends this serum specifically, which features pure vitamin C in addition to a ton of other vitamins and minerals, including vitamins E, A, B3, B12 and D3. Marketed as a multivitamin serum, the blend of goodies in this serum helps to address a whole range of skin goals, from assisting in the production of collagen to reducing inflammation and improving skin elasticity.
“It is so worth the splurge,” Jones raves, calling it “a miracle product.”
Dermstore
Skinceuticals C E Ferulic With 15% L-Ascorbic Acid
It can be tough when a life-changing product is a pricey one. This vitamin C serum boasts a combination of its namesake ingredient, in addition to vitamin E and ferulic acid, which specifically enhances your skin’s protection against environmental damage that can cause skin damage and aging — whether UVA/UVB rays, ozone pollution or diesel engine exhaust.
In addition to that protection, you’ll reap all the other benefits that come with a high-quality serum formulated with prime ingredients, like firmer, brighter and more even skin. It’s been called “life-changing” by one of our editors, who’s grappling with the fact that this serum is totally worth its high price tag.
Tatcha
Tatcha The Essence
While essences are massively popular in other parts of the world, they’re still not as common in American skin care routines. But if you’ve ever heard of one, it was probably this option from Tatcha. Made from 100% Hadasei-3 — the brand’s proprietary trio of Japanese superfoods — this product is all skin care goodness and nothing else.
Simply splash a bit of the product into your palms and gently press it into your skin. The formulation helps to prep your skin for all steps of your skin care routine while boosting your skin’s own bounciness, texture and radiance.
Nordstrom
Tom Ford Eye Color Quad Eye Shadow Palette
Jones calls these eye shadow palettes her favorite splurge. “The presentation of the quad and pigment in the powders are just stunning,” she shares. There are tons of different color and finish combinations to choose from — it’s admittedly hard to choose just one. However, Jones shares that she absolutely loves every palette, so whichever one you decide on is sure to be a great choice.
While people love the matte shades, reviewers go wild for the super-sophisticated, luxurious-looking and eye-catching shimmery shades. Apply them dry for a softer look, or wet for maximum impact — just be prepared for people to ask you about what you’re wearing.
Amazon
Beautyblender The Crown Jewels Blender Essentials Kit
“Beautyblender is the holy grail of makeup sponges and so worth the price,” shares Jones.
While you may be familiar with the standard-size Beautyblender sponge, Jones is also a fan of the different sizes the brand offers for different parts of your face. The smaller sponge in particular is really perfect for blending product into smaller crevices of your face, like along your hairline or on your nose. It can also be used to precisely apply cream or liquid highlighter or blush.
One piece of advice Jones shares is to keep them clean for optimal performance. Fortunately, this kit also comes with mini cleansers.
Sephora
Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick
“I love this multitasking foundation,” shares Coombs. “It’s super easy to apply and build — with a brush, sponge or your fingertips — and works great as a blemish and under-eye concealer.”
This foundation stick from Westman Atelier is super luxurious — the container is heavy, the magnetic cap is amazing and the whole thing just feels expensive. Probably not enough reason to buy the product, but when paired with a high-quality foundation, it’s the cherry on top.
“The silicone-free formula contains many skin-friendly ingredients to hydrate and soothe,” Coombs says. The result is a “luminous, natural finish” that falls in the medium coverage range. However, it’s super buildable and great for targeting any troublesome spots.

Equal parts skin care, makeup and technological innovation, the Opte Precision System is a smart skin care device that the brand calls an “all-in-one solution for hyperpigmentation correction, treatment and prevention.”
On the tech side, the handheld device features a little roller at its tip that you slowly sweep across your face. As you do so, the device scans and detects hyperpigmentation using a patented algorithm. Each time the machine identifies hyperpigmentation (some visible, some that may not be visible to the human eye), the device applies a unique serum.
This optimizing serum, which comes with the kit, combines mineral pigments with 5% niacinamide to help treat the discoloration while also lightly covering any dark spots for a super-natural look. The brand says the serum uses 97% less product than foundation, because the coverage is so targeted. Over the course of eight to 12 weeks, the serum continues to fade and eliminate dark spots and discoloration, improving your skin as you continue to use the device.
Nordstrom
Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum
If you’re sensing a theme here, it’s that serums are often totally worth a splurge. This option from Vintner’s Daughter boasts a stunning blend of 22 natural, multiperforming ingredients that balance, nourish, protect and revitalize all different skin types.
“The oil texture smells incredible, absorbs into the skin beautifully and is a great base under makeup,” shares Coombs. The core of the formulation is the brand’s “proprietary Phyto Radiance Infusion,” a 21-day process in which the nutrients from whole plants are infused into the serum’s formula, at which point additional and essential oils are added.
If it sounds a little bit like witchcraft to you, it does to us too. But the result isn’t just an incredible facial serum — it’s also one with responsibly sourced and highly sustainable ingredients.

A Tried And Tested Guide On How To Win The War Against Maskne
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/a-tried-and-tested-guide-on-how-to-win-the-war-against-maskne/
A Tried And Tested Guide On How To Win The War Against Maskne
Asian beauty woman putting on mask on face. Wearing corona virus prevention masks for long hours are … [] creating irritation, skin problems, acne pimples.
Its starts with a seemingly harmless blackhead. Then you notice redness and swelling that will inevitably birth a dreaded pimple. The next thing you know one zit has multiplied to cover almost an entire area of your face along the jawline or chin. Like most skin breakouts, once acne takes over your life, it will often feels like a losing battle.
My bout with acne took over three months of my quarantine life with wounds (okay, maybe scars is a better word for it) that remind me to never again take this skin pandemic lightly. The guesswork was tedious and for weeks seemed futile. There were trial and error attempts, in search of a balancing skincare routine that would clear skin without stripping it off its moisture. This is most important especially for those with combination skin. I even cheated on my trusted dermatologist, only to get a subpar facial that did nothing to improve skin’s condition. Said facialist, however, offer sound advice: “Forego products that will leave your skin oily until the acne has subsided. This will take a while.”
Before getting into the meaty details of this war against maskne, let’s talk about causes. Maskne is basically acne brought about by wearing face masks for prolonged periods of time. Heat, dirt, sweat and bacteria, when covered by fabrics or other materials used to make face coverings, trigger skin flare ups. Even in cooler temperature, maskne continues to be a bane especially for sensitive skin that’s dry and flaky. So yes, the war is far from over, but the good news is it can be won.
A GENTLE AND THOROUGH SKIN CLEANSE is your first step to beating this very frustrating skin condition. I looked far and wide for natural cleansers that would help to control the oil, sebum and dirt. Oil-based cleansers seemed to aggravate the flare up. Bar soaps left skin feeling tight, dry and flaky. Clean facial wash formulations with tea tree oil work wonders as an anti-microbial skin solution. Of the many choices on offer, an all-natural Philippine made Acne Defense Facial Wash from HUMAN NATURE fulfilled its promise of soothing a nasty flare up without drying skin.
Alpyn Beauty’s Wild Huckleberry 8-Acid Polishing Peel
Alypn Beauty’s Wildhuckleberry 8 Acid Polishing Peel is a multitasking skin treat that works as a … [] mask, skin peel and polish.
After a refreshing facial wash, double cleanse with an ultra gentle, multitasking mask, peel and scrub and polish in a jar. ALPYN BEAUTY’s Wild Huckleberry 8-Acid Polishing Peel has sold out several times since it launched in October—and for good reason. This skin treat harnesses the powers of a natural salicylic, citric, malic, tartaric, glycolic, azelac, ferulic and lactic acids to exfoliate skin and dissolve dead skin cells. Wild crafted huckleberry protects skin barrier, while bamboo power combined with blueberry seed paste effect natural microdermabrasion of skin. This light and delicious skin peel is so gentle you can use is daily, day and night. Ingredients used for this heaven-sent are all sustainably sourced and wild-crafted so you know that it does your skin, soul and planet good. This peel is also ideal for prepping skin before makeup application.
M-61 Power Glow Toner exfoliates away impurities, refine pores, and smoothens skin texture to … [] prevent blemishes and quickly improve existing acne
Wipe away deep seated dirt and impurities with M-61’s PowerGlow Toner. Formulated with Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid, this gentle skin toner exfoliates impurities, refines pores and smoothens skin texture to prevent blemishes and existing acne. Unlike other harsh anti-acne toners that leave skin dry, extra sensitive and flaky, the PowerGlow brings out soft, hydrated and glowing skin. It is also ideal for sensitive skin types that need an extra anti-acne boost.
ZITSTICKA’s Press Refresh Sheet Mask combines functional technology and skincare tailored to fight … [] acne. It is formulated with salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, Niacinamide (to calm) and vitamin A.
Skin flare ups and breakouts in the past have taught me that the first thing to go when pimples take over are heavy creams and moisturizers. As much as we all love a good dose of hydration, war against maskne calls for heavy reinforcements like a hardworking, skin saving face mask. ZITSTICKA’s Press Refresh Hydrogel Sheet Mask is a warrior that combines functional technology and skincare tailored to fight acne. It is formulated with salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, Niacinamide (to calm) and vitamin A.
Cutting-edge Graphene Technology is used in the sheet mask, which “emits infrared rays into the skin, offering enhanced absorption of each ingredient.” There are five sheets in every box of Press Refresh. Applied during evenings on alternating days, Press Fresh does a remarkable job in reducing redness and inflammation. By the time the last sheet was used, skin texture had dramatically improved. Pores also appeared smaller. Post acne, Press Refresh is highly recommended as a routine mask for preventing future breakouts. ZITSTICKA is a brand dedicated to creating innovative skin solution that help to fight acne breakouts at all stages.
Peace Out Healing Dots combine Hydrocolloid, Salicylic Acid, Vitamin A and Aloe Vera to clear up … [] acne-causing bacteria and reduce redness overnight.
Peace Out Acne Serum is formulated with Salicylic Acid, Niacinamide, Vitamin C & Zinc that work … [] together to clear blemishes, prevent them from returning
Maskne is stubborn and often requires a stroke of mad brilliance to beat. PEACE OUT, the leading anti acne skincare brand at Sephora, has changed the way we address breakouts with a full range of innovative skincare solutions. The Acne Healing Dot combines hydrocolloid polymer technology with clean, active ingredients to zap zits. Instead of applying gel or liquid formulas on the surface, PEACE OUT offers fun, stick on skin solutions for hardcore breakouts. I had to try it to believe. To use, simply apply the sticker directly on the affected areas and leave on for a couple of hours. Hydrocolloid dressings absorb moisture and toxins trapped underneath the skin’s surface, which effectively helps to reduce redness and swelling. Use of this technology also helps to speed up healing of acne. For best results, pair the Healing Dots with PEACE OUT’s Acne Serum. Salicylic acid infused with Niacinamide and Vitamin C decongests pores, while reducing the appearance of dark spots and blemishes.
Heraux Molecular Anti-Inflammaging Serum shielding stem cells from the effects of stress and … [] promotES their overall youthful function.
It’s also essential that you give skin the protective barrier it needs against stressors and irritants. This helps to form a layer that will keep it from inflammation and ultimately, breakouts. HERAUX Molecular Anti Inflammaging Serum uses the first and proprietary Biomimetic Lipid, HX-1, to target “inflammaging” or aging caused by inflammation. Through the discovery of two stem cell scientists, this breakthrough skincare formulation “shields stem cells from the effects of stress and promotes their overall youthful function by modulating the protein that regulates regeneration versus inflammation.” The layer has also helped me to protect skin and bring back its radiance and texture.
I’ve been using Heraux for a month now, applying a pea-sized amount on thoroughly cleansed skin before getting on with my day. This potent, light serum leaves a matte finish on skin which is brilliant especially when you are paring down on makeup. Pores appear smaller and more importantly, skin barrier is less likely to react to friction or contact with face coverings. After a few weeks of continued use, skin was visibly more youthful and refreshed.
Femmue Lumiere Vital C Serum to help lighten post acne blemishes and dark spots.
Gradually bring back skin hydration into your routine with FEMMUE Ideal Creme Riche
Dull and dry skin with are some of the after effects of a maskne breakout. You can also expect unsightly blemishes and dark spots. To revive clear, smooth and radiant skin, FEMMUE’s “flower therapy” serums and mask did not disappoint. Using modern botanicals, products like Lumiere Vital C Serum and Ideal Cream Riche are skin super healers that restore skin’s glow and texture. Lumiere is a multi-tasking lightweight formula that works as both an antioxidant and brightening solution. It stimulates collagen production while refining skin surface and lightening dark spots. It is also specially formulated to work beautifully with extra sensitive, acne-prone skin types. For a restorative nighttime skincare routine, pair this serum with FEMMUE’s Ideal Crème Riche every other night. Apply a very thin layer all over your face, making sure to tap excess cream with facial tissue. I love to follow with a 10-minute LED Face Mask session just before dozing off.
Scelido Anti Bacterial and Anti Virus Masks are breathable, washable face coverings made with Aero … [] Silver fabric and Copper threads.
The best way to keep maskne from taking over your life again is to choose invest in a an antibacterial, breathable face mask. I love a stylish statement masks and have built quite a collection over the months. For long days that will require hours of wear, however, opt for cotton face masks that allow skin to breathe. Infusion of copper and metal ions into the fabric also help to fight off bacteria. SCELIDO Nano Antibacterial and Antivirus Cooling Mask uses ASKIN and Aero Silver fabric, which gives 99.9% antibacterial and UV protection. It is as effective in protecting wearers from viruses as a KF80 but is light, breathable, reusable and effective in preventing acne. Copper threads enhances protection level and seamless ergonomic design (with sizing from XS to Large) allows this facial covering to sit perfectly on skin without causing traction and irritation.
We all look forward to the day when masks and maskne become things of the past. War wounds, otherwise known as acne scars, are slowly beginning to fade. Till then, lessons from this battle remind us that nature truly is the best healer. And as we continue discover the skincare and self care routine that works best for us, any maskne survivor will tell you this: do your research, look at ingredients and don’t go into guesswork.

While the performance of used to pale in comparison to products from our favored make-up counters, there are lots of natural make-up brand names creating products that are highly pigmented, apply perfectly, and put on along with their more synthetic rivals.
But before we get right into our faves, let's obtain one thing directly: "Natural" doesn't automatically imply a product is better or much safer for you, as the FDA has ambiguous requirements on just what comprises a natural product (" all-natural" isn't controlled for cosmetics, so it can be used purely as a marketing term).

You Look Moist: An Instagram-Famous Makeup Artist on How She Cares for Her Skin
Welcome to You Look Moist, a column in which Man Repeller asks cool people with glowing visages how they achieved their supreme hydration (amongst other things). Today’s installment features Ali a.k.a. Sweet Mutuals, a makeup artist known for creating conceptual looks using her own face as a canvas.
How would you describe your skin?
I typically have oily skin, but the amount of makeup I wear for my job can sometimes dry it out, so the biggest challenge is trying to keep it balanced. Other than that, my skin isn’t too complicated.
How would you describe your skincare approach in general?
I would say it’s “medium-maintenance.” I only use a small rotation of products. Drinking water is the most intensive part of my routine. I try to drink a gallon a day.
Which skincare products are integral to your routine for achieving your ideal, glowing, well-moisturized complexion, and how/when do you use each of them?
In order to keep my skin healthy and hydrated, I use Drunk Elephant’s B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum, Mad Hippie’s Vitamin C Serum, and Revolution’s Green Tea and Collagen Hydrating & Plumping Serum day and night, followed by Drunk Elephant’s Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil. I also do a face mask 2-3 times a week. My favorites are The Ordinary AHA 30% BHA 2% Peeling Solution, which makes my face feel smooth and clean and Apieu Banana Sheet Mask, which gives me so much moisture and a lovely glow.
See All 6
What about makeup products?
Even though I’m a makeup artist, I don’t really wear makeup unless I’m photographing myself, or doing a promotional shoot or interview. I started experimenting with makeup almost two years ago, using my mother’s makeup products that are God-knows-how-old, simply because I didn’t see anyone else doing the kinds of looks I was interested in, and because it’s fun! Putting on makeup just for the sake of it is challenging and daring, and I love that feeling. Some of my go-to products are Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, Huda Beauty Life Liner Double Ended Eyeliner Liquid & Pencil, and Claropsyche’s Real Fantasy palette for eyeshadow.
See All 3
What’s the cheapest product you use regularly and love?
I am in love with Covergirl’s Outlast All Day Lipcolor Transparent Clear Top Coat. It gives you shine like lipgloss does, and hydration the same way chapstick does. It’s the best of both worlds.
See All 1
Is there anything you try to avoid, skincare- or makeup-wise?
I try to avoid any cleansers that have alcohol in them–my favorite cleanser is Cosrx Low PH Good Morning Cleanser Gel. Matte foundation is also something I try to steer clear of as well. Instead, I really like Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r in the shade 460.
See All 2
Any next-level tips, tricks, or services that you swear by to help you look “lit from within”?
Drinking water. If it wasn’t for my father emphasizing how important this is, I have no idea what my skin would look like. Water is nature’s cure for almost anything, and it is integral in making my skin look its best. Apart from that, I would say that meditation has helped my skin as well. Clearing the mind seems to clear the small bumps on my forehead. A clear mind equals a clear face.

What’s your go-to product or trick for fixing a skin disaster?
My mom told me to put Vicks Vapor Rub on my small acne bumps at night before I go to sleep. Turns out, it works!
Do you do anything differently skincare-wise when you travel?
I actually don’t have a traveling skincare routine!
What’s something you wish your teenage self knew about taking care of your skin?
Just because you have oily skin doesn’t mean you should try to dry your skin out. Also, don’t buy products that aren’t meant for your skin just because the packaging is cute. And please drink more water!

Hey doll hey! Hope you are having a great day/night and that you are in good spirits, with as little pain as possible, and that you have plenty of spoons today. I’m having a pretty good day. My pain levels are somewhere in the middle range and I have a good deal of energy today. It’s cold here in Florida today and my body isn’t liking it, but it’s also not giving me too hard of a time. For today’s testing old makeup products I have chosen Tarte Poreless Mattifying Primer ($32 at Ulta), Too Faced Born This Way Naturally Radiant Concealer ($28 at Ulta and Sephora), and Stila Aqua Glow Serum Foundation (Discontinued). I have also tested out the 2 newest ColourPop palettes that I hauled…. It’s My Pleasure ($12 on their website) and Lilac You A Lot ($12 on their website). As a side note…. for my brows I tried a newer to me technique. I tried the soap brow method and I have to say I really liked the way my brows came together today. Anyway, I’ll review all 5 products in Final Thoughts but for now let’s jump into the Face of the Day …..
Base: I primed my face using Tarte Poreless Mattifying Primer (). I color corrected using Pixi by Petra Correction Concentrate ($12 at Target) in the shade Brightening Peach. For foundation I am wearing Stila Aqua Glow Serum Foundation (Discontinued) in the shade Light Medium. I concealed my under eyes using Too Faced Born This Way Naturally Radiant Concealer ($28 at Ulta, Sephora, and on their website) in the shade Light Medium. I set my face using Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder ($39 at Ulta or Sephora) in the shade Translucent and then warmed up my face using NYX Matte Bronzer ($10at Ulta) in the shade Deep Tan. I set my under eyes and baked my jaw line, center of forehead, and bridge of the nose using RCMA No Color Powder ($15 on the Beautylish website).
Eyes: I primed my lids using Tarte Shape Tape ($27 at Ulta) in the color Light-Medium Honey and set it using more of the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder. I first went in with the It’s My Pleasure Palette ($12 on the ColourPop website) and used the shade Kittenfishes (a cool lavender matte) as my 1st transition shade. I then popped over to the Lilac You A Lot Palette ($12 on the ColourPop website) and used the shade Imagine That (a pastel lavender matte) as my 2nd transition shade. For my crease I used the shade Iffy (a cool toned true purple matte) from the same palette. On my mobile lid I used the shade Wake Me (an orchard with a pink flip metallic) on the inner 1/3 and then switched back to the It’s My Pleasure Palette to use Chick Lit (a deep amethyst metallic) on the outer 1/3. I then went back to the Lilac You A Lot palette and used the shade Fluff (an icy violet with gold and silver reflect metallic) on the middle 1/3 to blend the inner and outer shades together. I then used a combo of the shade Filtered (a reddish plum matte) from this palette and Sleeper (a deep eggplant matte) from the other palette to deepen the crease a bit and on the outer v. On my lower lash line I first used the more of the shade Kittenfish and then the shade Iffy and then I deepened the lash line using more of Sleeper to create a smokey drop shadow. On the inner corners I used the shade Trainwreck (a soft lavender with a pink flip metallic) from the Lilac You A Lot palette to highlight them. I used the Soap Brow technique to set my brows using Neutrogena Original Fragrance-Free Gentle Facial Cleaning Bar ($1.97 at Walmart). I then filled in my brows using Benefit Precisely My Brow Pencil ($24 at Ulta) in the shade 4.5 and then carved out my brow line using BH Studio Pro Brow Highlighter Pencil ($5 on their website) on the matte side and set that with the shade Lucid (a pinkish nude matte) from the Kat Von D Shade and Light Contour Palette ($48 at Sephora). I lined my waterlines with the Revolution Pro Supreme Pigment Gel Eyeliner ($5 on their website) in the shade Nude. I primed my lashes with Loreal Voluminous Primer ($6.79 at Target) and then used Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara ($6.79 at Target).
Cheeks and Lips: For blush today I am using Loreal True Match Super Blendable Blush ($7.99 at Target and $11.99 at Ulta) in the shade W 3-4 Barely Blushing (a tanish peach satin). I highlighted the tops of my cheeks, bridge of the nose, Cupid’s Bow, and center of my forehead using BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed ($22 at Sephora) in the shade Champagne Pop. I then used MAC Mineralize Skin Finish ($36 at Ulta and MAC) in the shade Medium Golden as a finishing powder to blend out all the edges of the blush, bronzer, and bake. I lined my lips with NYX Suede Matte Lip Liner ($4 at Ulta) in the shade Stockholm (a very pale peachy nude) and filled in the lips using Loreal Matte Lip Stain ($11.99 at Ulta) in the shade 418 Empower (a pale yellow toned peachy nude) and then I topped the lips off with NARS Lip Gloss ($24 at Sephora and on their website) in the shade Chihuahua (a light berry pinkish coral).
Final Thoughts: So the soap brow technique was so easy to do. My brows felt a little bit sticky but soon dried down and held my brows in place but they came out fluffier than when I use brow gel ….. I am thinking I may do this technique a lot more seeing as though I have very sparse brows.
The It’s My Pleasure and Lilac You A Lot palettes were so easy to work with. There was no patchiness or skipping, barely any kickback in the pans, and very little fallout on the face. Every shade I used was rich in pigment that did not muddy when buffed into each other. These palettes offer enough shade variation that you can get several distinctly different looks with each. I’m going to have so much fun with these 2 palettes this Spring, even though I don’t have separate colors that I use for the different seasons, I just use what I feel like using, when I feel like using it.
The Tarte Poreless Mattifying Primer ….. ugh the scent!!! I just can not get passed the scent of this thing. It’s the reason i almost never reach for it. I like that it really blurs the pores and smooths out the texture on my face…. but that scent is just so gross. I don’t even know how to explain how this stuff smells, it’s some where between burnt plastic and play-dough. I’m finding it hard pressed to keep using this product. It’s almost completely full and I just can’t bring myself to keep using it because of the scent. I know it’s almost $40 that I’ll be wasting but I am decluttering this one from my collection.
Too Faced Born This Way Naturally Radiant Concealer….. I freaking love this concealer so much. It’s a light weight consistency that builds up beautifully. I have the shade Light-Medium and it’s my perfect skin match…. I want to use this one up so I can repurchase it in the shade Light-Nude so that I can bring some light to the under eye area. I am most definitely keeping this concealer in my collection.
Stila Aqua Glow Serum Foundation…. I’d give this foundation a solid B-. It just doesn’t wow me anymore. It’s a very light weight serum foundation that leaves the face feeling a bit greasy. This foundation was discontinued and so even if it wowed my I wouldn’t be able to get my hands on it anyway. It looks pretty and is a light coverage foundation great for the Spring, but I just don’t like it enough to keep it in my collection. I have decluttered it.
Well that’s all dolls. Stay tuned tomorrow when I try out another 4 items from my older makeup stash to see if I liked it or if I will declutter it. I hope you have a great rest of your day/night and remember …. save a spoon for a bit of lipstick.
XOXO
Purple Smokey Eye Face of the Day Hey doll hey! Hope you are having a great day/night and that you are in good spirits, with as little pain as possible, and that you have plenty of spoons today.
