Ugly Duckling

Seo HaeBom from Cherry Blossoms After Winter. I had to think hard about this. In my mind an Ugly Duckling is the lame kid in school who suddenly has a glow up. Now Haebom wasn't an ugly kid, but he was a loser in high school because he was technically an orphan. He was bullied by his peers and overlooked. They didn't even know that he was living with the most popular kid in their class. As soon as Haebom entered uni though he broke out of his shell. He made friends. He developed some confidence. He learned how to stand up for himself. Sometimes being an Ugly Duckling is really just you being an outcast for not having a mama and sometimes becoming a Pretty Swan is learning to love and choose yourself.

Touya always ends up drunk after parties, and it's not by choice. It starts off with Nagant having to take a punishment drink after losing a drinking game. Rumi offers to drink it in her stead because Nagant doesn't like drinking a lot. But Keigo takes it from Rumi because he doesn't want either of them to get drunk. As he prepares to drink, Touya snatches the shot glass and downs it because Keigo has a low alcohol tolerance.

The cycle continues with Touya being the one to drink everything, so the other three repay him by staying with him until he sobers up the next morning.

Honestly, one of my favorite parts of the ending to CBAW is that the implication isn't that the relationship has been completely fixed between TaeSeong and his mother but rather than HaeBom helps them stay closer than they would have been otherwise.

HaeBom is the glue in their relationship. He is the love that they both share. He is the love that holds them together, the love that they both hold above themselves.

TaeSeong would never have spoken his mother again if HaeBom hadn't insisted on going back. You can see it in his eyes.

But he is so deeply in love that he will do anything for HaeBom... including finding it in his heart to see his mother as his mother and to love her for the sake of the man he loves and his love for her.
