Sense8 Cancellation: A Rejection of the People it Represented

Does anyone else feel that the optics of Sense8’s cancellation have not been appropriately covered by the media? I am surprised that more media outlets have not questioned Netflix’s decision and the overall message it sends to people across the globe who are having a hard time dealing with this horrible wave of nationalism, xenophobia, homophobia, division, fear and hatred that have constantly consumed our lives since 2016.

Why is Netflix:

(1) Cancelling a show filled with LGBT representation and visibility on the first day of LGBT pride month?

(2) Claiming the show has a “bold, emotional, and stunning” narrative yet cancelling because Netflix needs to start “take[ing] more risk… try[ing] more crazy things” – the show with the 5-year arc plan that spanned 16 countries across the globe, casting actors and employing film crews from each location wasn’t “risky” or “crazy” or “daring” enough to warrant the payoff the creators delivered at the time of inception?

(3) Wanting to produce “hits” and cancelling a show that was a critical hit in many markets that are essential for its “global dominance”? Sure, Sense8 Season 1 performed with mixed reviews, but Season 2 was pretty much universally well-received by critics and many even stated the critiques of Season 1 were addressed in Season 2.

(4) Blindly renewing shows that have been ripped apart by critics for no apparent reason (Iron Fist, Fuller House, Flaked)?

(5) Stating how much they love, value, and cherish the show and its message, yet only promote the show twice on the official US Netflix Twitter account and have little to no marketing/advertising/push when the season debuts? Not to mention the fact that it wouldn’t stop promoting House of Cards Season 5 for an entire month or two before it premiered (which was completely unnecessary and not even worth the hype imo; I couldn’t even finish the season).

(6) Contradicting its own mission statement of “Helping content creators around the world to find a global audience”? If it can’t find a truly global audience in Sense8, then I am at a loss for what the executives think the tastes and preferences of a “global audience” is; I’m even more scared to know what the company thinks the composition of this “global audience” would be

(7) Rejecting the central message of acceptance and embracing programming rife with fear and division (I’m looking at you HoC). Now, more than ever, Sense8’s core message of empathy, acceptance, and compassion has never been more important in this Trumponian, nationalistic, and isolationist world we live in. I’m convinced that part of the reason some of these feelings are so present in society is because they’re baked into the premise of most of the media that we consume today. I am by no means saying Sense8 is the cure, but the optics of Netflix cancelling a show that celebrates the human condition and empathy is a punch in the gut to those who genuinely believe in the message at its core.

There is no doubt in my mind that this was purely a financial decision. However, the decision seems to go against the rebranding efforts of Netflix becoming a truly globalized platform. It would have been nice for once if a company would see the intangible value a decision like continuing – or at least properly concluding -  Sense8 and the message and belief it has in humanity and all the beautiful people it is representing instead of telling us we aren’t worth the investment. What kind of message does that send to us and to the world?

aye fuck you Netflix. How dare you cancel Sense8. You fucking give us a shit selection of garbage movies and old shows, then a bunch of shitty Netflix originals ain't anyone tryna watch granted 3 marvel shows, a show about jail and maybe a few have come to pass the standard shit show, and then you expect us to pay monthly for this crap?! Your monthly fee is better spent else where.
