For Christen Press, the Joy is in the Journey
Progress isn’t perfect.
That’s been Christen Press’s motto over the 781 days since she last played in a soccer match—and not just when it comes to her recovery from the ACL tear she sustained in June, 2022, but also when thinking about life as a whole.
“You have to accept that things won’t go the way you think they will, but maybe they’ll go better,” she explains. “Progress isn’t linear. It’s up and down and back and forth. But in that movement there’s more than what you ever imagined. So the imperfection—the struggle, the setbacks—those are actually the greatest gifts as you get to learn about yourself and you have the chance to grow.”
Press has had more than her share of setbacks over the last two years, as an initial surgery turned into two, then three, and finally four.
“I think every single time that I was told I’d have to have surgery, from the first ACL reconstruction and the three scopes that I had, I always thought I would be on the quickest timeline possible,” said Press when she returned to Angel City training in June. “I think that's part of who I am. I'm just relentlessly optimistic. I'm naively positive, and just thinking that everything's going to work out for me—and I never want that to change, you know? And I got off course of all of those timelines so many times that I finally had to actually relinquish that expectation of myself.”
In her two years off the field, Press says she’s grown and healed in more ways than just physically, but the goal was always to return, even if that possibility felt far off at times.
“I never thought about giving up,” says Press, “but there were moments that I thought I’d have to accept that I wouldn’t make it—or that ‘making it’ might not look how I expected.”
One of the hardest things about this process has been accepting that the outcome was not fully under her control. “I’m able to do a lot of suffering for success, and I’ve been that way since I was a child,” she says. “The question I had to answer was how to accept and be open to things I cannot control.”
Press had access to the best medical and rehabilitation care in the business—first at the Meyer Institute of Sports, an El Segundo rehab and performance facility specializing in elite athletes, and then with Angel City’s training staff, including VP of Medical and Performance Sarah Smith, Head Athletic Trainer Manny De Alba, Head of Sports Science Dan Jones, Director of Rehabilitation Sarah Neal, Performance Coach Michael Roman, Assistant Athletic Trainer April Seymon, and Senior Physical Therapist Joscelyn Shumate Bourne.
Ultimately, bodies don’t always heal the way we hope they will. All she could do was show up every day and try her best.
“I had to make decisions that centered my well being and full personhood,” she says. “To start to find my inherent value outside of excellence in the pitch.”
In part, that meant finding joy in other areas of life. She worked on her business, re–Inc, including starting a podcast with (business and life) partner Tobin Heath, initially focusing on the 2023 World Cup, then branching out to cover women’s soccer more generally. She went to the beach. She spent time with family.
In some ways, this time away from the game Press loves has been freeing. “The last two years have been the first of my career that I wasn’t evaluated on my performance,” she says. “I showed up for PT every day with a smile on my face and gave max effort. That’s all I had to do.”
Press’s return comes at a perfect time for the club: they’ve begun to build momentum with two convincing Summer Cup wins, against Club América and Bay FC, as they look ahead to the back half of the regular season. Playoffs are still well within reach heading into this stretch, a fact that Press’s return can only make more tangible.
“Her quality is inevitable,” says First Assistant Coach Eleri Earnshaw. “Last week in training, she scored a couple of goals that we haven't seen anyone else do yet this season in training.”
Returning to play after such a long hiatus isn’t easy for anyone, but Earnshaw says there’s a point the coaching staff have emphasized both to Press and to other injured players eyeing a return to the field: “your ability doesn't change overnight,” she says. “There are some things that just stay with you. Her chance creation, her separation from defenders—you’ve got to be in the right physical and mental place to be able to perform those things, to be confident to do it, but she is building those things up every day.”
“If we can get that quality onto the pitch for any number of minutes, great,” she concludes.
As Press anticipates her return to what she calls “the real world of professional sports”—one “filled with stress and pressure and often angst,” as she puts it—she’s going in with a fresh perspective.
“I’m determined to enjoy it,” she says. “I know who I am as a player and person, and I see this opportunity as a chance to do what I love. I told my teammates today: football is a miracle. It’s a miracle we get to do the thing we love.”

June 12
Since the other night – Denise and Jillian Ambrose had kept quite on their plans for Garrett from him. Jillian had called Dakota and Joey, asking if they could come to San Sequoia for an intervention for her Dad. Unfortunately Dakota is set to be deployed to Hidden Springs today which Jillian understands. Thankfully Joey is able to come to provide guidance.
Andrew has been told what is going on and decided he wanted to go spend time at a friend’s house instead. Jillian thinks it would be good for Andrew to be there during the intervention but he’s almost eighteen and capable for making his own choices.
The mother and daughter duo, along with Joey, wait for Garrett to return home from work. The moment Garrett walks in the door, he knows something is up because of everyone’s faces and the fact that Dakota’s brother is in the house, a fuzzy memory hits him of seeing Joey in a bar .
Tumblr media
Denise is joined on the couch by her husband, she feels nervous and sick to her stomach. She doesn’t want to do this but knows she has to.
“Denny?” Garrett asks softly. He has a good idea what this is all about. After his daughter had to literally support him so he could get into his own house and he yelled at her, he’s starting to see he has a problem.
Denise finally looks over at her husband “I love you very much. We’ve been together since our senior year of high school and I can’t picture my life without you.” she begins, glancing over at Jillian, who is seated in the chair across from them. Joey is pretending not to listen while looking at a tree frog that the family has. “That’s why I can’t let this go on any longer. Honey, you need help. Coming home drunk….climbing in bed with our teenage son, mistaking him for me…yelling at our kids when they haven’t misbehaved…it’s not you.”
Tumblr media
Garrett, despite his love for his family feels a bit attacked though he isn’t being attacked. He hears Joey step closer. “The thing with Andrew with an accident, it was dark and I wasn’t used to that house yet. I didn’t do anything inappropriate to him.” He defends himself.
“He knows that and I know you didn’t do anything either.” Denise assures him, Joey warned her if Garrett feels attacked he may refuse help.
Garrett relaxes slightly “I do feel bad for yelling at you, Jillian. I’m sorry.” He says to his daughter, looking over at her. Jillian slightly nods but remains quiet. This is Denise’s time to speak.
“I’ve arranged for you to stay at a rehab center in Granite Falls for a month, longer if needed.” Denise starts.
“I can’t do that, what about my job?” Garrett asks her. How will the bills get paid? They aren’t rich people and himself and Jillian are the only ones bringing in any money currently.
“I spoke with your boss, your spot is safe until you return.” Denise tells her husband, the money situation is a worry for her as well.
“We still can’t pay our monthly bills on what Jillian earns at the bookstore.” Garrett counters. He doesn’t want to go away and go through rehab but he is legitimately worried about leaving his family to fend for themselves.
“I know and that’s why I’m going back to work.” She knows Garrett won’t care for the idea. Denise hasn’t worked since she was pregnant with Jillian.
“But I promised you that you would get to be a stay-at-home Mom once our first child was born…” Garrett objects brokenly, the weight of his actions starting to weigh down on him.
Tumblr media
Denise moves off the couch and kneels before her husband of twenty plus years, cradling his face in her hand. “Honey, I’m fine with it. I got my undergraduate degree in business and hardly used it. It’ll be kind of nice to put it to use, to be honest.” She tells him, brushing a tear away from his cheek. “The most important thing is that you get the help you need and come back to us.”
Garrett stares at his wife, feeling some of his resistance slip away. He knows he needs to do something about his drinking. Not only for his family but for himself. His behavior lately is not who he is as a person. He doesn’t like who he sees when he looks in the mirror anymore which makes him want to drink even more.
Tumblr media
Garrett stands and hugs his wife tightly as she places a kiss on his forehead. “I’m going to make a few more calls while you talk with our daughter.” She whispers before releasing him.
Tumblr media
“Jilly Bean….I’m so sorry…” Garrett tells her, she seems more closed off to him than his wife. “I shouldn’t have yelled at you the other night, you were just trying to help me.”
Jillian nods, trying not to cry. “Are you going to rehab?” She asks softly.
“Yes. I’m going. I need to, for all our sakes.” Garrett tells her sincerely. He wants to hug his daughter but she seems like she wouldn’t have it at the moment.
“I do love you, Dad. It’s just…hard. For more than one reason…” Jillian trails off as Garrett slowly steps closer to her. Joey stepped outside with Denise after he felt Garrett wasn’t going to flee or blow up on someone.
“I love you too.” Garrett assures her, which makes Jillian burst into tears.
Tumblr media
Even though she may push him away, Garrett places his hand on his first borns’ back and starts rubbing it like he did when she was little and would have nightmares about witches and warlocks.
“Dad…I think I might be pregnant.” Jillian admits through sobs. She hadn’t planned to tell him, worried it might be too much for him right now but she felt she needs to tell someone.
Garrett almost falls over once he realizes what Jillian just told him, but he remains steady and keeps rubbing her back. This news has motivated him even more. He may have a possible grandchild on the way and he’s not going to stand in the way of himself being around for it.

I have experienced several bouts of homelessness since I was a teenager....
and maybe it's because I'm a girl or maybe people think me a nice person or maybe I know the right people or God knows why, because I don't mean this to have been everyone's experience and it's not something I'm terribly familiar with (hard drug use that is, alcohol yes), but I could always get drugs for free when home deprived. Like always. Including alcohol and even legitimate scripts. Even and maybe especially as a teenager. And that's the worst part of it all.
Of course you want you do drugs. Your life sucks. Does it go well? No, not usually. But it's due to factors that almost displace the drug use issue. Rare is the person with a perfect life (with no: inner, familial, health, marginalization, racism, systemic abuse, home life, social, sexual/gender, unbearable stress/life purpose, existensial, community/school ostricism issues) that just happens to have fallen deeply into drugs. So rare I don't know of a single instance. Not personally at least.
And as everyone knows, most hard street drugs, unmonitored scripts and alcohol use exacerbate any issue at all. But the vast majority of people can cope, hide it, manage their lives, get away with it and stave off homelessness.
I know of several people that did heroine and meth and other hard drugs for decades and live/lived a "normal", some even familial, life and never got arrested or incarcerated or lost a job or anything of the sort.
Some people belong to entire families of addicts who cycle in and out of jail instead of bougey ass rehabs and house arrest or nonarrest at all due primarily to their lack of privilege and wealth, class status, and based more on bigotry and societal structures and not the merit of punsihment at all, whatsoever.
Do you think they arrest a lot of cartel, mafia, organized crime syndicate, white collar, corporate fraud, environmental negligence, government corruption people? No, they don't actually. These people get tons of passes and do so much more overall harm to society than any homeless people ever could.
And let's not forget that there are clean homeless people that do not commit any crimes at all. I know a handful of truly nice people that for various reasons choose a different lifestyle that doesn't include a permanent address, soft bed or easy bathroom access. And a few others that were thrown into it out of need to leave a horrible situation immediately and nowhere to go but the streets. Also remember in the US we have a lot of medical bankruptcy and lack of affordable housing.
So before anyone goes accusing homeless of being horrible people. Why not go meet some? Volunteer at a soup kitchen, senior center, children's youth home, homeless shelter, etc. Before judging you should get a well rounded idea of who the people you're judging are, and the difficulties of their life. And your one or two familial or known people with this problem is not a general consensus of any kind.
I always say that I don't care to pass judgement on people because it's not my job. And I definitely would never, ever, ever want that job... no matter the pay or benefits. Because you'd have to know all about their life to be able to pass judgement and the little I know about people's lives who have been homeless.... a lot of it is heartbreaking and really fucking sucks smelly shitballs. Why would I want to see loads of shitty tragedies or worse..... paths they didn't have to take or were sabbotaged and waylaid with by truly evil entities/systems/people/circumstances?
Sure most evil in the world is pure selfishness and some is mental health issues, but the rich and powerful and educated don't hold the key to virtuosity. They can just pay, bribe or schmooze their way out of shit because that's what upper eschelon people do. They rarely pay for their societal sins and vices. Everyone else does. That's the only trickle down scheme I see them ever truly do well.
And the problems homeless have didn't just spring up out of the morning dew. Most people have trauma, negligence, abuse, violence, disorders, parasites (literally intestinal and brain worms which are very common worldwide and throughout other animal kingdoms actually but can and will get worse when one slums it a lot, be that alleys, porn stores, dirty bathrooms, unsanitary food service, hookers/promiscuity, needle sharing, and not doing whole body cleanses and not washing hands after pooping or staying away from poop laden areas. Why do you think farmers and vets deworm animals. For the insurance scam?) along with many other systemic issues that most society/government/ religions/media/educational institutions, etc do very little to truly help with.
Leaving humans with humanities issues to fix for themselves individually, which is the most assine cruelty of this shitty world. As if anyone actually could do that? Its a bandaid on an avalanche.
It's almost as if the people lording over us are all dumb as fucking doornobs and just running around a dark room blindly bumping into each other and all the furniture until it's time to go home and then wake-up and do it all over again. It is as if they dont actively and purposely make or keep these societal structures absolutely abysmally horrible and then laugh at everyone's stupidity at playing along with the depravity.
We have so many systems and structural societal paradigms that instill inequality very much on purpose. Be it bigotry, racism, fascism, hatred in general, classism, elitism, sexism, agism, on and on and on and on. We are made and expected to judge and hate each other and punish and berate and violate and repudiate and isolate and desecrate and punish and be utterly fucking vicious to each other because obviously the world stops spinning on the correct axis, I guess, if we don't.
People are so stupid, narrow minded, elitist, judgemental and fucking egotistical.
But go ahead and act like nothing I said pertains to you fucktoids. You dumb imbeciles.
I am still tolerating you all. But some of you may not be able to say the same about me. I can pretend a lot better than most of you, fortunately. Maybe because deep down I'm not the depraved, raging, maniacal, vengeful, blood lusting person I portray myself to be here.
This is just me venting. This is me spouting off because I hate this world now. And I'm trying to find myself, my purpose and a single reason to live besides my children because this world doesn't hold any allure for me anymore. I hate almost everything and everyone in it.
So there is no luck with that necessary endeavor yet. But I'll get there, hopefully. As long as I wake up each day I will keep trying to find a reason to give a fuck in this shitty, brutalistic, inhumane planet and its dumb, selfish, useless inhabitants. Meanwhile you're all stuck with this bitter version of me. Welcome to my hell.
If you don't like it. Look away. Ignore me. Get a life. Fuck off. Go be nice to your children, or dog or something. Get off my back. I have enough vermin surrounding me.
And maybe... I don't know, consider being part of the solution instead of bitching about shit you don't really know much about..... you putrid, hypocritical, entitled, dumbass fuckheads.

So many people in the system failed my grandmother and failed us in the process too. Her doctor, the rehab facility, her caregiver, her OT, the social worker at the senior center… no one flagged her for dementia or depression or anything else. No one in a professional position took our concerns seriously. They were all willing to listen to her ex-husband, who hadn’t been living with her and taking care of her, but they didn’t listen to us. They all took everything she said at face value, without even questioning it, despite the fact that she wasn’t able to answer basic questions. And that’s what really gets me. She gave the senior center a completely incorrect last name, that sounds vaguely like mine but nothing like hers. I know this because we still get mail here addressed to her with that name. How were none of them concerned? How did they see us as a threat, but not the man who was speaking over her and answering all her questions? The man who had no home and no source of income and convinced her to sell the home that she owned outright and was saving for her disabled son in order to go live with him? They all saw this happening and not one person did anything.

Women's College Basketball: Iowa's Sydney Affolter sidelined with leg injury
IOWA CITY — University of Iowa senior guard Sydney Affolter underwent a surgical scope of her knee at the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center. Innovative Techniques in Ortho Bones Rehab for Elderly Patients
Design Thinking in Orthopedics:
Imagine a creative workshop where healthcare meets innovation. Design thinking — a human-centered approach — has found its place in orthopedics.
What Is Design Thinking?: It’s like a choreographer’s sensibility applied to healthcare challenges. Design thinking combines empathy, creativity, and practicality to solve complex problems.
Application in Orthopedics:
Identifying Challenges: Orthomed likely uses design thinking to identify specific challenges faced by elderly patients during their orthopedic journey.
Patient-Centered Solutions: By involving patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, Orthomed designs solutions that truly address individual needs.
Innovation Introduction: From identifying initial challenges to introducing technology-based solutions (like musculoskeletal health innovations), design thinking ensures a patient-centric focus.
GreenBone: Bone Regenerating Implant:
Imagine an implant that dances with bones, encouraging regeneration. Orthomed’s product, aptly named GreenBone, is a game-changer.
What Is GreenBone?: It’s a highly innovative bone regenerating implant suitable for treating non-loaded and load-bearing large bone damage
How Does It Work?: GreenBone stimulates bone growth, aiding in healing fractures and restoring bone strength. It’s like a partner in the rehab dance.
Advanced Rehabilitation Technology:
Orthopedic rehab now embraces technology. Picture it as a fusion of traditional rehab and futuristic tools.
Why It Matters: These technologies complement traditional services, enhancing outcomes.
Examples:
Robotic-Assisted Rehab: Robots join the dance, ensuring precise movements during exercises.
Wearable Sensors: These track movement, providing real-time feedback. Seniors can waltz through rehab with confidence.
Virtual Reality (VR): Imagine seniors stepping into a virtual world while improving balance and strength.
Continuous Passive Motion (CPM): Devices gently move joints, aiding recovery after surgery or injury
