—your boyfriend leon supports you after you start your new job, a drabble
masterlist taglist
an: this is so self indulgent because i just started my new job. i needed to write this though, to get it out of my system and to stay somewhat active. imagine whatever leon you desire, used re2 for aesthetic purposes <33
you were tired.
so very tired after your first day. you just wanted to crawl under the sheets and let your cramping legs wither away.
you kept running through the day with images encompassing your mind, like snapshots of the day passing through a slideshow. you had been up since 5:30 am, it was now 4:30 pm and you had just gotten home from your shift.
you were beat, worn out and just wanted to wither underneath the sheets. to just relax and not move a singular muscle. even reading, your favorite pastime, sounded tedious and the idea made your head throb.
serving senior citizens, the breakfast and lunch shift. it was rewarding but grueling, so tiring and your back ached. the coworker that you shadowed just smiled, saying; “you’ll get used to it after a while.” and you hoped, you really fucking did.
because how you would do this five days out of the week, you had no idea. you had no clue. you knew that you needed the money, that you needed the stability even though leon, your boyfriend, lived with you.
you had been financially unstable as a kid, could count on both hands how many times you’ve had to move. because rent was just too much for your single mother, or the neighbors picked a fight, or your moms terrible ex boyfriend knew you & your mothers current address.
that was enough to push you to work yourself to the bone, even leon, saying that it wasn’t a good idea. and he was a cop, he had been for two years. he’d seen shit, worked himself overtime. and if they didn’t live together, they’d never see each other. hence, them living in a one bedroom apartment together.
but if leon was telling her to slow down, to take it easy, you knew it was going to be tough. it was going to take all of you to have the life you dreamed of. going back to school in august, seemed like a pipe dream after your first day at your new job.
because how would you ever have time?
and you feared this, you feared the loss of the future that was so close in your reach but…just not within shot of your fingertips.
but you were grateful for leon, for him and just…how he made things so much better. he just loved you, supported you and knew how stubborn you were to prove yourself, despite the reassurances that you would be fine. that things would just work out, he had been in the trenches too once, as a child, he had made it out.
but you couldn’t compare your childhood to his, it was awful in different ways, it wasn’t worse. wasn’t something that could be measured. it just was. it was the past though. and you were desperate to prove yourself to leon, to your kid self deep inside of you and to the others that have told you that you wouldn’t, couldn’t do it.
because you could. and you would.
just to prove them all wrong.
you were beat.
only your second shift shadowing someone and you were a goner, your back was killing you and your feet ached. you wish you could just win the lottery sometimes so you didn’t have to work yourself to the bone just for some money.
leon was helpful, he rubbed your feet, massaged your back and pressed kisses everywhere he needed to. he was supporting you, the thought and idea alone made you want to cry. because you didn’t feel appreciated, no one had showed it up until this point. but leon had, he’d cheered you on despite his skepticism of you taking on a larger workload.
you loved him so much, so much that it hurt.
and that was maybe all worth it in some sense, to have him to come home too. it made things easier, made you feel cherished and loved, even considered in the sense that he knew what you were sacrificing.
what he sacrificed everyday he went to work and put on his uniform.
you couldn’t imagine a world without leon, in any timeline, any universe he didn’t exist, was an unlucky one. a very unfortunate one. one that you never wanted to be a part of.
in the weeks that followed as you continued your new job, he just kept saying sweet things, buying you flowers and books from your TBR list and cheering you on. “your doing great, baby. i’m so fucking proud of you.” or “i’m so grateful for you, your so appreciated.” or your personal favorite, “i love you so much, beautiful. so strong, so kind and sweet.”
and that was enough, it was enough.
even though your hands were dry from washing copious amounts of dishes, your back hurt from standing for so long or your feet were killing you, or your mind was swirled with exhaustion. it pushed you, it made you want to push forward, it was hard. but with leon loving and supporting you, holding your hand and kissing your exhaustion and stress away…it was enough.
you didn’t think that without him you would’ve made it this far, that you would’ve pushed past the boundaries that you did. but you were thankful for him, for everything he did for you.
you wouldn’t be able to push forward alone, you’d likely fall. and leon would be there to catch you…
every.
single.
time.
an: this isn’t the update i promised, i know. but i just needed to write something. to deal with this change in my life and what better way to do that then with writing something about leon??? but anyways, pls like, reblog and interact with my masterlist linked at the beginning. let me know if you wanna join my taglist (also linked). i’ll have a oneshot up soon, pinky promise. i love you all, kisses. xx

you are absolutely insane. + ( e. williams )
category: lifeguard!ellie x competitive swimmer!female!reader oneshot
summary: since your school’s swim season has been let out you convince yourself to get off your couch and go to your local rec-center to get some practice in. ellie has just moved into an off-campus apartment and needs to get a night job in order to keep up with her rent.
warnings: suggestive, implied smut, use of the word “baby”, mentions of alcohol usage, overall cringy
word count: 2.7k
author's note: as 68..1% of you requested,
“just…just give me a couple more weeks man.” ellie pinched the space in between her brows, very obviously annoyed.
“i’m not doing this again ellie,” a robotic voice came from the speaker of her phone, “i can’t keep covering for you. get a fucking job.”
“but– i’m in class all day! when the hell am i supposed to work?” ellie barked into her phone, dreading the noise complaints she’d get from her neighbors. maybe the size of her apartment was a glow-up from her dorm, but the people living around her sure weren’t.
“i- i don’t fucking know. drop a class or something? work at night?”
that conversation is how she landed here. clocking in at 6 at a rec center not too far from campus to sit and watch senior citizens go back and forth in a pool and hope they don’t drown so she doesn’t actually have to do her job. decked out in red and white ellie propped herself up onto the towering “LIFEGUARD” chair and watched each of the seconds pass on the big red digital clock displayed on the wall. little did she know today was the day she’d meet you.
you walked, well, rather you were being pulled into the pool by your friend olivia. you guys had been on your school’s swim team together and after mopping around your dorm for almost 2 weeks after your final meet she decided you, and a couple other girls from the team, would meet up at the pool a couple days after school and just, “have fun,” as she had called it. and you decided to go along with it, you could use the excuse to get out of the house once in a while without getting absolutely hammered. you served the area of the pool: a couple lanes taken up, a brunette lifeguard scooping out the newcomers (you and your friends), a bunch of lockers scattering the west wall, holy shit that lifeguard was hot.
you immediately turned your head back to take in the entirety of the brunette lifeguard, freckled and blush-dusted face with a set of emerald eyes. you noticed a crooked name tag that read “ellie'' before hearing your name being called by our team mates.
“coming!” you called to your friends and jogged over to grab your stuff before heading to lane 6 (the one closest to ellie) next to ashley and began your workout.
ellie was flabbergasted, astonished, she touched god. never in all her years of living had she been so…drawn…to a girl. okay, maybe that was a bit dramatic, but by the moon and the earth you were gorgeous. the way your hair fell on your shoulders, the way your smile shines in the echo-y pool’s fluorescent lights, the way your eyes lingered on her for the right amount of time. she was shamelessly gawking at you. i mean– she had too. it was her job!!! nevermind the lame-o senior citizens in lane 2 that were statistically more likely to drown…she just had to look at the way your arms cut through the water.
the hours lingered on, and to your surprise you had no idea what a couple weeks off would do to you. you were practically panting after each 100. and, obviously, olivia and ashley had finished before you.
“go home,” you said, “i’ve just got a cool down left.” your friends agreed and you turned around to face the flags again. a loud clash, the doors closing, made itself noted behind you before you began the last part of your set.
then, finally, after many flip turns and a few glances at the rec’s lifeguard you were done. you pulled your cap off and slipped out of the pool, gathering all your stuff and heading back. after you finished drying yourself off you looked back at the pool, all the lane lines stripped, holy fuck that was fast to see ellie rolling a cart of flippers back into the storage closet.
“haven’t seen you around here before,” she smiled. ellie was walking toward you as you finished stuffing your (still soaking) kick-board in your bag.
“my school season is out so i’m just practicing here, when my schedule allows me, before short course starts up again.” you explain, tucking your hair behind your ear. and then realizing how fucking dorky and cheesy it was and how you totally embarrassed yourself in front of your very hot lifeguard.
“cool, cool, cool, cool” you hear her answer, and you could swear you felt her eyes scanning you. you finished zipping up your bag, its ziiip echoing throughout the large and empty pool, having been deserted by all your teammates. wait. all your teammates? like- even your-ride-home-olivia was gone.
“shit.” you muttered.
“huh? oh, sorry!” ellie stuttered out, realizing how stupid and awkward and probably unprofessional her talking to you was. UGH! I’M SO STUPID she mentally slapped herself convincing herself that it was just her delusion that had pictured up any image of you actually acknowledging her existence.
“no–no, it's not,” you began, “i lost my ride– i– my ride left, i’m…stranded.”
“oh.”
“yeah,” you nervously chuckled
“i mean, this sounds weird, but,” she said, “i could drive you?”
“getting into a stranger's car late at night…” you questioned, like you were pondering it, “why not?”
“okay don’t put it like that,” she giggled.
“nah, man. that would actually be a lifesaver! and i’ve seen you around campus, you don’t give me any reason to suspect you’d axe murder me so…”
“alright,” she smirked, grabbing her keys from the knob of the storage closet door and heading out the door, with you not far behind.
you don’t know how it happened but what was going to a quick drop off at your place from your rec-center’s lifeguard turned into a dance party and the two of you screaming lyrics and hollering out of her window, having the time of your lives. earlier that night, when you first got in the car, ellie figured to blur any awkward silence she’d hand you the aux. turns out, you both had crazy similar music tastes and after that you guys clicked instantly. you were having so much fun and that's why when the bright familiar lights of home appeared in the rear-view mirror you kind of wished you lived somewhere else, farther away.
“thanks, again,” you looked at ellie.
“anytime,” she said, smiling at you. with regret that you didn’t say anything else you closed the car door and walked over to your front door and spent that whole night thinking over her.
unbeknownst to you, ellie would be thinking about you too, not only thinking about you but talking about you to the one person who would always lend an ear to all her girl problems: dina.
“she’s just so” “so what ellie? i need details.”
“pretty? beautiful? gorgeous? perfect?”
“did you at least get her number?”
“oh.”
“oh what ellie? oh my god you dumba–” her NUMBER! ellie thought of course! duh! i’m. so. stupid!!!
that was her next mission. get your number, your instagram, your anything, hold onto anything to be able to get to know you better. luckily for her, it wasn’t that hard, your visit to the rec-center had not been a one-time thing, in fact you and your teammates had begun a routine. and ellie drank up every glance she got at you. she had gone over and over different scenarios in which she’d ask for your number, “if you ever need a ride again,” “thought you could use this,” and after surveying that they were all equally cringy and accepting the fact she’d never have the same confidence as she did the day she met you she realized, she didn’t have to get your number, she could just give you hers. so, it was a nice surprise to see a little yellow slip, a post-it note, atop your bag adorned with her number and a little “ellie :)” as soon as you were home, showered, and ready for bed you opened your phone, sending a quick, “hey!” and introducing yourself before plugging in your phone and dozing off. ellie would deny it to anyone she knew but she totally responded immediately after you texted her and were, to say the least, disappointed when you didn’t text back after 10 minutes, half an hour, 2 hours. ellie decided to not let her stupid crush affect her and let sleep consume her. needless to say, when she woke up to see a “new message” notification she nearly leapt out of bed.
after the whole olivia-leaving-you-alone situation ellie had offered to drive you home from practice and who wouldn’t take her up on that offer? not to mention that driving home with her was fucking awesome. you got to play anything you wanted on aux and she would always get food with you. it was like meeting your soulmate, you guys had almost everything in common you could talk about whatever you wanted. she was the yin to your yang. whatever foods or things disgusted you, she loved, and she would be happy to take them off your hands. there was no awkward stage, you guys were practically meant for each other.
it had been barely a month yet every time you walked into your rec-center you were greeted with the yelling of your name and ellie sloppily climbing off her lifeguard chair to come up and hug you. you had met dina and jesse, ellie’s best friends, and ellie had met yours. it seems that nearly every waking moment of your day was spent in her company, not that you were complaining. you were sitting on ellie’s bed while she was scrolling on her phone on the floor, back propped up against her bed’s frame.
“hey,” she began, “dina’s inviting me to a party, wanna go?” she asked, turning her head to look at you.
“sure, why not?”
“sick,” she smiled and turned back to her phone, texting back dina, you assumed. a couple hours passed and you were in the bathroom, adjusting your outfit and making sure everything looked good. ellie stepped into the door frame, keys giggling on her fingers.
“ready to go?” she asked, smirking at you. you nodded and followed her out the front door.
noise was blaring and people clambered all around some kid’s dorm. to say the party was full of life was an understatement. you and ellie made your way over to the party’s make-shift bar and poured yourself a cup of your designated drinks. you didn’t have to do much looking to find dina, who was dancing in the middle of the living room. she immediately spotted you guys, deserting the group of girls she was hanging out with, and ran over to you.
“hey guys!” she greeted. lets just say whatever-the-fuck you were drinking worked, fast, because next thing you knew you were dancing, laughing, and joking about things you never would sober. so was ellie. so much so, you don’t know how much time had passed, but you were having the time of your life on the dance floor with some random feel-good song in the background. and ellie pressed up against your back. and you sure as hell weren’t complaining.
you turned around and wrapped your arms around her neck and continued to dance (grind) into her lap. and somewhere though your drunken haze her arms were on your arms, hips, totally feeling you up. and then her lips were alternating between yours and your neck. you both stumbled from the middle of the dance floor, lips still connected, to some wall off to the side. from then on, ellie got more adventurous, for lack of a better word. hands moving every ten seconds. they were cupping your face, then your tits, hips, ass, and then your face again. you couldn’t say you weren’t, either, hands went from delicately perched on her shoulders to the back of her head to desperately grasping for handfuls of her hair. the two of you barely came up for air until–
“let’s move this,” she practically panted, “somewhere else,” pulling you in the nearest unoccupied room. and as suddenly as her hands and lips had left you, they were back on you again. she began wondering again, this time however, her hand pulled at your waistband, waiting for you to nod or acknowledge what she was trying to do. it was you who parted your guys’ lips this time.
“you.” you began, making sure to catch your breath, “are absolutely,” you continued, “insane,” you finally huffed out, before smashing your lips back together and pulling your own hands at your waistband.
(fade to black bc i can’t write smuttttttt)
ellie woke up, groaning, with an awful headache. then, when she finally regained consciousness, she surveyed the room she was in. definitely not hers. her clothes, party clothes, were scattered on the floor and the only thing that remained was her black sports bra. she didn’t even realize there was another living human being next to her until she felt the cool breeze of your peaceful sleepy breath. you were lying next to her, presumably naked under the covers. your hair was messy and knotted and taking up all of the pillow and your makeup had worn off. and you were utterly gorgeous. ellie couldn’t help but smile. bask in the moment. the little time she had left to admire before she realized you were literally sitting next to her, unconscious and topless.
“fuck.” that's all she said. that's all she could say. she was so ready to run, let her flight kick in. and she would’ve, had you not wrapped your arms around her and pulled her back down. you, unconsciously (totally), rested your head in between her shoulder and neck and sighed. yeah ellie thought i could get used to this.
shoes squeaked and whistles blew. eveything was hectic. you were just trying to get into meet-mentality when a familiar, comforting, voice came from behind you.
“hey baby,” ellie, your girlfriend of 2 months, came up and hugged you. “came to wish you good luck,” she smiled as you turned to face her, catching a glimpse of dina and jesse waving from the corner of your eye.
“aww,” you leaned up to kiss her, “that's so sweet! thank you ellie. and i love you, but, i have to go warm up i’ll be right back.” you said.
“yeah, yeah, babe, don’t let me hold you back.” ellie chuckled and went back to find her seat next to jesse and dina. a couple hours had passed and your first event was coming up shortly. you stretched and made your way over to the blocks. and as soon as the microphone sounded, you were off, you were trying your absolute hardest. and it definitely paid off. when you looked up at the scoreboard next to your lane you checked your time. and you shaved 8 whole seconds. you could barely contain your excitement. once you were out of the water you ran to hug ellie, not caring if you got her wet. (in more ways than one iykwim lol) (im sorry) (that was uncalled for)
“i’m so sorry baby,” ellie said.
“huh?”
“your 200? you added like, a minute.”
“what?” you were so utterly confused, “oh my god! no,” you laughed in realization, “ellie, that was my 100. it's long course season. i didn’t add anything, i literally went 8 seconds faster!”
“ohh!” ellie said, nodding, pretending she understood anything you just said but congratulated you anyway.
and for being a lifeguard, your girlfriend was a shit swimmer.
“how the fuck did you even get this job.”
“shut up.” ellie was only halfway in, red “LIFEGUARD” swimsuit and trunks on, and she was already turning a ghostly white. “i can… function… in the water perfectly fine.” she said, trying not to chatter her teeth. you reached for her hand to pull her into you.
“your hands are literally purple.”
“well maybe your just super-human and can’t feel how f-fucking cold it is.” that night after you guys drove home ellie was cuddled up by the fireplace, a little cold already forming. you had just exited your after-practice hot shower and were nice and cozy, there was just one thing– person– you were missing. you laid down facing ellie and snuggled up to her. it was the mundane nights like this that were the ones worth living for.

I'll start with the caveat that the newer expansion packs have recently gone up $20 in my neck of the woods (and they've cheekily put the prices of Horse Ranch and For Rent up as well as Lovestruck). So that is causing me to judge the newer expansion packs very harshly in comparison to when they were $50 full price.
That said:
(this is probably going to get long)
Enough
Seasons, even thought it doesn't come with a world. It adds so so much to gameplay and is my first expansion pack to rec to anyone, unless they're mostly or purely focused on builds.
Focusing more on packs that have worlds: Get Together and City Living. I would actually pay what is now the full pack price of $70 for them as well as Seasons. Less so City Living, but only marginally. Both worlds feel full and have vibrant, memorable townies, and like actual places that I could take a loading screen to. Even if my gameplay isn't based in San Myshuno - or in a city at all - my sims usually go to at least one festival or participate in karaoke night. And now that I've learned how to use it properly, the "clubs" function in Get Together is such a great quality-of-life gameplay mechanic.
Henford-on-Bagley is a really good example of a less urban world that still feels inhabited, but more on that below. Mt. Komorebi, while Snowy Escape isn't a favourite pack or an essential, likewise feels just populated enough and like there's enough to do/variety to justify its price. It serves exactly what its premise set out to be. I also appreciate the representation of Japanese culture - and was really hoping For Rent would be much the same.
Growing Together... could have possibly done with a couple more lots and families, especially considering the focus on generational gameplay. Where are the senior citizens who have major Bingo beef with each other? But the gameplay does add a decent amount, and the CAS and Build items are nice enough to give base game a refresh if that's the only expansion pack you have. And I couldn't really group it below, considering the packs that I did.
Needed More
I agree with @changingplumbob in that some of the newer worlds simply don't feel large and/or inhabited enough. Horse Ranch would have actually been a good size to me if only it had a couple more residential lots and a few more townies that came with it, just to make it feel more populated. Though I get that it's vast and not as densely populated as San My and Windenburg, given that they're city worlds and horsies need a lot of space to roam.
(Henford-on-Bagley in my mind is a great example of a rural pack that still feels populated, 'just busy enough' and with a sense of community. Chestnut Ridge is almost there though! It just needed some more fleshed out events and to have more townies who aren't overtly Island Living folks wandering around.)
Tomarang though? What a waste of potential. Only two neighbourhoods inhabited and the world - while gorgeous - feels so empty when my Sims are wandering around it. It's the only SEA world we have and it's a real shame that there's not a third proper neighbourhood and that some of its ideas are actually really interesting (like the tiger sanctuary) but rather flimsily executed.
(This is in comparison to Jungle Adventure - a gameplay pack where you can actually explore the hidden temples...)
In terms of earlier city worlds, while I appreciate that it came with a decent amount of townies (and a lot of gameplay options if you're into its concept), Del Sol Valley could have definitely done with more lots. Since it's based on LA and the pack came out after City Living, an apartment block or two for all the struggling actor types would have been a nice touch. If you're someone who enjoys playing with the pack mechanics though, I will say there's a good amount of gameplay there. I think in that respect it's definitely worth the price more than the three most recent expansion packs - it's just not quite my thing.
Get To Work and Magnolia Promenade I'd probably group with Get Famous and Del Sol Valley. It gives a reasonable quantity of gameplay if you use it, but it really needed more than four lots. If it's the retail world, at least give us a mall or something. That could have been such a fun concept to play with. Also some rival business empires?
(I didn't talk about Lovestruck because I don't have the pack. But from what gameplay I've seen - and what I've heard from people who usually have pretty balanced takes on packs - I'd probably group it with For Rent.)

Want to see something cool, but also kinda sad + anger-inducing?
Today I went to a nearby state park, and hiked to this cabin:
Hand-built by a local man named Armar Bordner in the 1930's, it was occupied by Mr. Bordner until his death in 1994. It's not for rent or anything; it's just sitting there, with all the doors and windows open, for anyone who's up for a mile-and-a-half hike to stop in and have a look around. There are a few framed photos on the walls showing how it looked when he lived there, and a couple of signs explaining the history.
And that's kind of a bold move, considering that, if you have any ability to read between the lines, the parks department really comes off bad in it.
Here's the sign:
A clearer and more detailed version of the text is available here, the site of a private conservation organization that maintains the cabin.
Mr. Bordner, who was an Industrial Arts teacher, bought the land and built the cabin by hand, with some help from friends and students, over a 2 1/2 year period ending in 1939. All of the logs for the cabin were felled and hewn by hand, he used local materials, mostly obtained at the site, and was reportedly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright.
In the 1970's, the state decided that they wanted to create a state park in the area. The original plan was fairly elaborate, including damming the creek to create a lake for recreational boating, fishing, etc. (PA state parks have a lot of these "man-made lakes," mostly built in the CCC era or shortly after WWII.) Under eminent domain, the state seized private land--mostly hunting camps--for the project.
One of the seized properties was Mr. Bordner's cabin. He fought the seizure--I mean, who wouldn't?--and at some point the state apparently decided that it was not a great look to force a senior citizen out of the family home that he built with his own two hands, and granted him the privilege of continuing to live in it for the remainder of his life, for what is described as a "nominal fee."
Mr. Bordner went on to live two more decades, passing in his cabin in 1994, at the age of 90. During the decades since his cabin technically ceased to belong to him, the park project kind of fell apart. The park was officially formed in 1987, but it was considered an "undeveloped park"--meaning, it was public land, but the state wasn't doing anything to encourage people to visit it or accommodate them if they did--until 2012, when the parks department took an interest in developing it.
Now, in 2023, the park has several hiking trails, three parking lots with port-a-potties , and that's about it. (Most state parks here have things like campsites, picnic grounds, etc.) Some of the trails--the equestrian trails and the Swatara Rail-Trail--are on park land but maintained by other groups. As is the cabin itself, which was allowed to fall into disrepair after Mr. Bordner's death, and was restored by a group called the Swatara Watershed Association.
It's an absolutely beautiful cabin, in a lovely setting, and I'm glad I got to see and explore it--but once you learn the history, it's hard not to feel that it should still belong to Mr. Bordner's daughter. (Or, if she didn't want to live there or keep it up, to a group that Mr. Bordner had chosen while he was alive to preserve it and make it available to the community.)
Anyway, here are some more pretty photos:
Here's a big porch-balcony that looks out over the stream and waterfall:
Sophie and I sat there to have a little snack after our hike:
Then we got to exploring the inside. Here we're in the main room looking out toward the waterfall:
And here we are on the other side of the window, looking in:
The main room, here, faces the creek/waterfall on two sides, as the stream wraps around it. Over to the right (from this POV), there is a small room that might have been a bedroom or kitchen. (There's a photo of a large woodstove for cooking in it, but the watershed or site seems to say it was a bedroom?) The balcony from the earlier picture is to the left, and at the far end of the cabin there's a staircase leading up to a loft, with some little bedrooms tucked under it.
Here's one of the framed photos on the wall, showing how this area looked at one point during Mr. Bordner's time there:
And my attempt at re-creating the photo from the same angle:
Here we're looking down from the loft, at the fireplace that Mr. Bordner built with stone collected on the site:
Another look at the fireplace:

You walk down the road you drove up last night, finding a little side road after a while, and taking it. It’s plowed but you can’t see any footprints in the newly fallen snow, and the words of Frost come to you: I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. You scoff to yourself, not in the mood for philosophical musings about your life choices.
The snowflakes are falling down less densely now, and the sky is darkening. Accustomed to the city lights as you are, the darkness seems so compact – yet you’re not afraid. It’s comforting in a way. The idea that you can be completely swallowed up by darkness and cease existing feels good.
The trees grow dense and you can only imagine the green canopy their crowns would form above your head in the summertime. Now only black, naked branches stretch against the black-grey sky, snowflakes slipping through the finger-like limbs.
You stop when the silence is broken by a sound. Is that a dog? Yes, it seems to be a dog barking. A small one, from the sound of it. You look around, expecting someone from the house, but you can’t see anyone. The sound comes from in front of you, so you walk on. The road bends, the trees spread out, and you find yourself looking over a small lake. A thin veil of ice covers the dark water, but it doesn’t seem like it would hold even a mouse.
Or a small dog. You look around in search of the animal, without seeing anything. The barking has stopped, and you feel a shiver run through you.
“You’re the woman in the cottage.”
The voice startles you so much that you give an audible gasp. Turning around, you see the old woman standing right behind you. She’s properly clothed this time, and looking up at you with sharp eyes.
“Yes,” you manage, your heart beating wildly. “I am. We met the other day.”
“I remember,” Olga replies, seemingly irritated at being reminded. Calming down now from the fright, you look the old woman over. She is wearing a long overcoat, sturdy boots, a hat, scarf, and gloves, like any senior citizen going out for a walk in the winter.
“How are you today?” you ask politely. “Can you imagine all this snow?”
“Haven’t had this much snow at Christmas since the seventies,” she replies, looking around. She seems uninterested in you; something else is preoccupying her brain. Is she still looking for that dog of hers? Even now, is she not aware of the dog being long gone?
“Can I help you with anything?” you ask tentatively. “Or help you home?”
“You think I can’t find my own way?” the old woman barks, and you apologize, turning your attention towards the lake instead. The dark, quiet water shines through the thin veil of ice, and you imagine that you can hear the lapping of waves. Olga comes to stand next to you, her gaze roaming the scene in front of the two of you.
“He’ll come tonight,” she says, sounding concerned, like she’s thinking of a thousand chores yet undone.
“Oh, you mean Santa?” you smile.
“Santa!” Olga scoffs disdainfully, her watery gray eyes piercing into your very soul. “Santa doesn’t exist, foolish girl!”
You haven’t been called a girl in many years, but you can’t take the compliment because if it’s not Santa Olga means, then who? There is nothing about the old woman that suggests that she isn't in full possession of her faculties right now, so who is she expecting?
“Who is coming?” A shiver runs through you as you breathe out the question, and Olga turns towards you.
“Stop mumbling and speak up.”
“Who is coming?” This time you nearly yell it, the suspense making it hard for you to control your voice. Your bladder suddenly feels too small and you’re shivering.
“Ezra, of course.” Olga looks at you as if you were stupid. “Ezra is coming tonight.”
You have too many questions to focus on only one, and you're starting to wish that you had never come here. Not to the lake, not to Oakgrove House. You should have just stayed in your empty apartment and cried Christmas down the drain along with soapy shower water. Buried yourself under a pile of blankets in your lonesome bed.
You meet Olga’s gaze and just as quickly as intelligence lit up her milky grey eyes, the lights are put out and no one is home. She seems to shrink in front of you, hunching her shoulders and hiding her face.
“He said I was his little bird, and that he would come back just in time for Christmas, and we would be married. Mama and papa would not give their blessing but we would run away, live our own lives, just Ezra and his little Blackbird…”
Another shiver makes it difficult for you to find your tongue and will it into forming words, but you force yourself to put your hand on Olga’s shoulder.
“Let’s go home,” you mumble, and the old woman doesn’t protest when you gently turn both of you around and start your slow walk back to the house. Olga is quiet and you can't tell what decade her mind dwells in, but she willingly lets you lead her away from the lake.
The high, piercing barks of a small dog chase you but Olga doesn't seem to hear anything. You wonder if they're real or imagined. Since Olga isn't paying them any attention, you decide it's better to just ignore them and focus on getting the old woman home.
When you're nearing the house and can see the windows light up like glowing eyes through the snow, Olga slides her arm from yours and straightens her back.
"I can walk by myself," she scoffs, like it she wasn't just leaning heavily on you. You draw your arm to yourself, almost ashamed.
"Of course," you mumble, suddenly feeling tired. You haven't done much today but still feel like the day has been long and filled with chores and obligations. The evening, lonely and desperate, is still stretching out before you and for a moment you wish that you were included in the togetherness that you have discerned on the other side of the great lawn. Even now, you hear children laughing and through the snowflakes, you see Olga's grandchildren chase each other on the lawn. It would be nice to belong, to be surrounded by people who love you, to have someone special to cuddle up to...
You swallow hard and tell the rat to stay away from your ribcage, at least until you've relinquished Olga to her family. Only when you're back in the cottage, away from prying eyes, can you break down.
"It gets easier," Olga suddenly says. You flinch and turn your head to her, finding her staring at you with piercing eyes.
"What?"
"It feels like your world is ending," she states matter-of-factly, like she was listing states and their capitals. "But it will get better. One day you realize that you are no longer hurting. That you have forgiven myself."
"What do I have to forgive myself for?" you ask, stunned by her words. You never told anyone here about your ex, did you? The reason for your being here?
Olga stops and searches your face. Snowflakes twirl slowly around the two of you but the brim of her hat keep her face dry. Your lashes are wet with melting snow - or maybe tears, you don't know.
"For not holding on harder," she tells you, the warm hint of compassion thawing the cool practicality of her voice a little. "For not fighting harder to keep him."
You stare dumbly at Olga as your brain scrambles to make sense and words of the conflicting emotions stirred up by her statement. Before you succeed, however, Denise's voice calling for Olga cuts through the snow and makes you look over Olga's shoulder and see her daughter hurry up to you.
"Mom, are you okay?"
"Of course," Olga replies with some irritation, turning to her daughter who stops in front of the two of you. "I can't take a walk by myself anymore?"
"I'm just worried about you going out in this weather," Denise tries to smooth things over. You can see from how her eyes are moving that she's inspecting Olga's attire. Finding it adequate, her shoulders sink visibly. Olga gives you a short nod before marching right past Denise, aiming for the house.
"I hope dinner is ready, I'm hungry."
Denise shakes her head and sighs before turning her attention to you.
"Thanks again for looking out for her. Where did you find her?"
You blink, not really sure how to handle this.
"By the lake," you confess. "But she was... not confused. At all. She was out for a walk. It was really she who held me company on the way back, not the other way around."
"She has good days," Denise nods, grief pulling the corners of her mouth down momentarily. "But I don't like it when she goes on her walks alone."
"I can understand that," you acknowledge uneasily. "It must be hard."
"Thank you," Denise replies simply, then looks over her shoulder at Olga, who is gathering the children and heading towards the house. "Well, dinner's waiting. Do you want to join us?"
"Oh, no, thank you so much, but I've got my own plans," you hurry to assure her. "You have a good evening."
"And you. And sorry for this. Looks like you got more than you bargained for when you rented the cottage."
"I don't mind. Happy to help."
You take your good-byes and return to the cottage, but stop halfway up the pathway. Slowly, you turn around and look at the snowman on the other side of the road.
It stands there, silent and stoic, in the yellow light of the single streetlamp. Through the veil of falling snow, you think you see it winking at you. Of course you are mistaken. It is an inanimate object, nothing more.
And still, you speak to it.
"Don't try anything, Ezra," you say, loud and clear, before retiring to the warmth of the cottage.
Later, when you pour yourself a second glass of wine to chase down the rest of the your simple dinner, you happen to glance out the window.
The snowman is no longer on the other side of the road. It is standing in the garden of the cottage.

Browsing Zillow I found several listings for suspiciously cheap apartments to then find that they’re retirement communities, and I think there’s a great comedy movie in the concept of a broke 20-something-year-old pretending to be a senior citizen to afford rent

Back home.
I feel everything but rested and relaxed. I gained more things to handle and as usual, the visit took so much of my funds, i'd like to cry if i wasn't too stressed to do that. I will most likely have to go for another visit next month and I am already dreading my finances. Because there's barely something to call that.
Mom's getting worse and she's getting all kinds of bad side effects from the experimental cancer meds they've tried giving her. She's chatty and chipper socially, but 85% of the time she was saying how she aches all over, can't do much else than rest and all the talk about not having any time left. That's hard to listen to every day when you can't do anything about it. I spent a week cleaning, cooking, running errands and doing digital paperwork. I managed to find her a senior citizen's apartment during this visit, and she can move there by the end of next month... If she's able to. It would be a better(and much more safe) place for her to be in, so I'm hoping I can manage to get her welfare help with the move. My siblings promised to at least help with hauling her stuff from point A to point B. But I'm guessing the packing/unpacking and everything else is going to fall upon me. Meanwhile my own welfare is all fucked up because I've been so busy handling hers, i've forgot to do some updates on my own, and now I have to anxiously wait and see when will i get the money to pay my rent with for this month :'))) (thankfully my landlord is nice and chill though x.x)
All I want is sleep and peace of mind. And maybe a 24hr hug.

OK, here’s how OUT OF TOUCH the people who develop these new properties that are mostly “luxury” but they offer a VERY FEW apartments at a cheaper rate, in three categories, Low income, lower income, and least income. BUT: TO EVEN APPLY FOR THEIR “HUNGER GAMES” DRAWINGS, YOU MUST MAKE AT LEAST 2.5X THE AMOUNT OF THE “LOW RENT”. THAT DISQUALIFIES ANY SENIOR CITIZEN ON SSI WITH NO OTHER INCOME! IT”S TOTAL CLASS BIGOTRY ON A SILVER FUCKING PLATTER!
Here are the exact wordings of this shit on their ads:
The whole thing is just BULLSHIT! PEOPLE ARE HURTING! PEOPLE NEED STABLE HOUSING! YOU ARE MAKING SOME KIND OF SICK GAME OUT OF IT! IT’S FUCKING DEHUMANIZING! HUNGER-GAMES FUCKING LEVEL BULLSHIT!
I feel like a good shorthand for a lot of economics arguments is "if you want people to work minimum wage jobs in your city, you need to allow minimum wage apartments for them to live in."
"These jobs are just for teenagers on the weekends." Okay, so you'll use minimum wage services only on the weekends and after school. No McDonald's or Starbucks on your lunch break.
"They can get a roommate." For a one bedroom? A roommate for a one bedroom? Or a studio? Do you have a roommate to get a middle-wage apartment for your middle-wage job? No? Why should they?
"They can live farther from city center and just commute." Are there ways for them to commute that don't equate to that rent? Living in an outer borough might work in NYC, where public transport is a flat rate, but a city in Texas requires a car. Does the money saved in rent equal the money spent on the car loan, the insurance, the gas? Remember, if you want people to take the bus or a bike, the bus needs to be reliable and the bike lanes survivable.
If you want minimum wage workers to be around for you to rely on, then those minimum wage workers need a place to stay.
You either raise the minimum wage, or you drop the rent. There's only so long you can keep rents high and wages low before your workforce leaves for cheaper pastures.
"Nobody wants to work anymore" doesn't hold water if the reason nobody applies is because the commute is impossible at the wage you provide.
