BENJAMIN HYUN
Full Name:  Benjamin Hyun Nicknames: Ben, Benj (close friends), Benny (parents) Pronouns and Gender: He/Him, Cis Male Age and Birthday: 39 years old, June 10th Birth place: Dallas, TX  Sexuality: Biromantic Bisexual Occupation: Microbial Ecologist Education: Masters in Ecology, minor in Environmental Science Residence: Crystal Cove Condominiums Time in Aurora Bay: 15 years Face claim: Steven Yeun
tw: bullying mildly mentioned, infidelity, very brief mention of racism
HISTORY —
Born to immigrant parents, Benjamin came to be three years after they’d moved to the States from South Korea with their work visas. They’d settled down in Dallas, Texas.
His father was a boilermaker, and his mother had started with an easy, secretarial job part time until she ended up pregnant. Once Ben was born, she became a stay-at-home mother.
Ben had been raised with nothing short of care and love and all the support he could ever need. There was an expectation for him to go to college so he wouldn’t have to work like his father, but that was the only pressure he received. For that reason, they were big on him not working through the school months, only summer in between grades, and pinched pennies to save up for his tuition.
He also may have been an only child, but he met Ricardo living in the same complex as him when he was very young. He was very much so like an older brother to Ben.
Ben had been a basketball player through high school, starting on the Varsity in his senior year. Along with his time in after school clubs and encouraged volunteer hours put him on the path to success.
The hardest he had was the occasional comment made about his ethnicity from someone closed-minded as he did grow up in Texas, but bullying hadn’t been a real problem. The nineties into the two-thousands had been more kind to him than what his parents put up with in the early years of their residency in America.
When he graduated high school, he’d done so a year early, and he ended up pursuing a degree in Ecology with a minor in Environmental Science at Berkeley College in California. By twenty-one, he earned his bachelor’s, and then by twenty-three, his Master’s.
Ben had fallen in love with the West Coast. Not only for the dry heat, which had been a relief in comparison to the Texas summers, but the shoreline, palm trees, and the mountains. Added in the open-mindedness of California communities, and the higher pay rates, he sought employment in the Golden State.
He did help to move his parents out to the West Coast, and he’s even used some of his salary to get them settled and comfortable in San Diego. That made it easy for him to decide to settle in Aurora Bay, so he isn’t far away.
TRAITS.
+ Flexible, sociable
+/- Empathetic, tactful
- Inconsistent, moody
HEADCANONS.
⊹ Ben has had a series of relationships, short to long-term, but no matter the length or reason for how they come to an end, he always finds the best course of action following a break-up is to hide in his room listening to Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper on repeat.
⊹ he never learned how to ride a bike. When he was a kid, he always stood on the back of ricardo’s. the training wheels never came off.
⊹ moths scare him. He hates the idea of mothman.
⊹ he can speak Korean, and he also knows beginner level sign language.
⊹ he will 100% eat your leftovers if they’re put in his fridge, but in the same breath be extremely moody if someone eats his.
CONNECTIONS.
Ben has been in Aurora Bay for fifteen years, so he will need any sort of connection that comes to mind. Friends, rivals, frenemies, hook-ups, ex-romantic conquests, etc.
♡ @castellcnos - ben met ricardo down in texas. their parents lived in the same apartment complex, and they swiftly became best friends. ben even followed him out to berkeley college in california. after ricardo's marriage fell apart, ben has invited him to live with him in aurora bay to get back on his feet.
♡ @santiagodeleons - santi is ben's other close friend, and at times, more the voice of reason than ricardo. despite his feelings about what happened with his marriage, ben does stay steadfastly by his side.
♡ @maura-cortes - the niece ben never expected to obtain, he's grown to love her like family. he also has a bit of a soft spot when it comes to her asking for things, like money. (not in game but canon)
♡ @laureljacobs - when ricardo first left for college, ben had no other friends. he saw laurel off to the side by herself, figured it would be the easiest friendship to make. he was wrong. she was extremely stubborn about letting him in, but it did give him something to do every day until he graduated and left..
♡ @bradley-banner - their friendship has long since shifted into an awkward one being she is santiago's ex-wife, but ben respects both sides by talking about neither to the other. (not in game but canon)
♡ @auggievillanueva - his first serious relationship in aurora bay, ben had been all in. but when everything in auggie's life became too much and overwhelming, and he decided to break things off, ben took it too heart that he didn't want to try and extent the extra effort to make things work.
♡ @delilahcarreno - it was some time after auggie ben met delilah, and though he didn't fall into this one as fast he definitely fell harder. she had been 'the one' if asked by anyone, but when she cheated it ripped his heart out.
♡ @esmemaxwcll - an awkward tinder date gone bad, benj feels bad about it but he also knows it's just because they didn't click.

Erratic Pulse is a mutated alfa Rot cyst that infected Five Pebble's superstructure and his puppet and now controls it and uses as it's vessel. It can control all infected creatures and the rot.
Before main events it was created by excitement by Five Pebbles and was flashed out of his structure. It ended up in Garbage wastes were it started to consume other Rot cysts which leads to its mutation. Now sentient alfa Rot cyst learns about its power to control other Rot cysts and decided to go back to Pebble's structure to take over it. While going through Garbage wastes it encounters the scavenger group. Scavs tried to fight it but alfa cyst attacks them and infects a few scavengers by accident. The infected scavengers become one with the hive and obey alfa rot. With this new ability, Rot and infected scavengers started to infect every living creature that they encounter. The Rot takes over Garbage wastes and moves to Shaded Citadel to reach the Exterior. It took just a few cycles for it to reach insides of the superstructure. While the Rot spreads in his interior, Pebbles creates an escape plan.
Once alfa Rot cyst reached puppet chamber it takes over it and consumes all Pebble's memories and knowledge. The ascension and Triple Affirmative was really interesting to it. So it started to think that it and the rot are the solution to the Great Problem and it needs to spread itself to all iterators and creatures. It takes Pebble's pseudonym Erratic Pulse as it's name. Now Erratic Pulse decides to talk with its senior and big sister - Looks To The Moon. It pretended to be Pebbles and told Moon that it had found Triple Affirmative and wanted her to use it. Moon, based on the messages from "Pebbles", began to suspect that something was wrong and asked "him" to start a video call. Erratic Pulse refused.
Then Moon used her seniority privileges and called "him" with the help of the forced commission. Pulse was disappointed with Moon's reaction on it, but it still insisted on its offer and invited her to join it and tried to convince her that it was for her own good. Moon, in fear, immediately ended the call and blocked it. Disappointed, Erratic Pulse sends infected lizards at her. This is where the main events begin.
Erratic Pulse slowly will take over regions in the process of the main events(ex drainage system, shoreline(waterfront facility) and Moon)
Erratic Pulse hates Five Pebbles and sends nightmares on him since some part of him is still connected to his puppet and bullies him in main local group chat once Moon's communications are fixed.
Pulse, even with its desire to infect Moon, respects Moon and cares about her
Its desire to speak with Moon later will be used to slow down the Rot spreading(But conversations with it makes her sad)
It goes in uwu mode when it talks with Moon in desperate attempts to talk with her and be a "good" little brother for her.(It even reads some old pearls about sibling relationship)

Henry Lawrence Kane went home to be with the Lord with family by his side on October 4, 2022. Henry was born on January 25, 1935 to Robert and Iola Kane of Hoopa. He was a devoted Christian and a proud member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe. As a young man, he attended school in Hoopa, graduating from Hoopa Elementary and Hoopa Valley High School. While in high school, he was active in student activities and a natural athlete playing football, basketball, and tennis. After High School, he attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, and later attended Humboldt State University where he studied Finance. He then enlisted in the US Army in 1956; he was honorably discharged and returned home to work for the Humboldt Fir Mill.
In 1960 he moved to Oakland with his sister Margaret and went to work for Foremost Chemical Company. Later that year, he married Mildred Grant of Somes Bar. Together they had three children Tanee, Robert, and Michael. His children were his pride and joy in life. In 1964 the family moved to Hayward and made many great memories together. He enjoyed watching his sons’ sporting events and taking his daughter to the theater. He held season tickets to the Oakland Raiders games for several years. He was an avid gardener and took pride in having the most beautiful yard on the block. He also had a beautiful singing voice and sang in church choirs all his life. In 1961, he entered a TV talent competition on the Oakland KTVU Network and was offered to tour all over the US. But, being the family man he was, he chose to stay home with his growing family.
Some years later, Henry met Frances Shelton while attending Central Baptist Church in Alameda. He sang in the choir while she was serving in a children’s church. They were married two years later. So started a wonderful and rewarding life teaching Sunday school and doing Rest Home Ministry at the Shoreline South Convalescent Home in Alameda. Then, in February 1986, God took them on an amazing journey by bringing them to Sebastopol. They became active members of Sebastopol Christian Church and continued teaching Sunday School together. They were married for 27 loving years before Fran lost her hard-fought battle with cancer.
Henry filled his time with physical activity and providing service to his community. He enjoyed playing in the Sebastopol Tennis league and volunteering at the Sebastopol Food Bank. He was active in both until his health brought him home to Hoopa to be closer to family.
Henry is survived by his children Tanee Kane and Billy Joe Peters, Robert Sr. and Ella Kane; his brother Dennis Kane Sr. as well as his grandchildren Robert Jr. and Brandice Kane, Curtis and Melissa Kane, Chelsee Gibbens and Travis, Haylee and Billy Aubrey, Mariah and Kris Mitchell, William Peters and Felice, Jurnie Wilder and Fernando, Jesselyn Peters and Joseph, Cole Kane and Laura, Vernon Peters and Salina, Madison Kane and Talon. Henry is also survived by his great-grandchildren Maile, Grace, Allen, Bunny, Curtis, Emma, Kristofer, Davonte, Fayelynn, and Yvonne; and by his numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Frances, and his parents, Robert Kane Sr and Iola Moon; his siblings, Corene Miguelena, Robert Kane Jr, Margaret Powell, Carlson Kane, Hugh Moon Jr, and Cheryl Rose; his son Michael Kane, his grandson Clinton Kane and his lifelong friend William “Injun Bill” Carpenter.
The family would like to sincerely thank the many people who visited and cared for Henry in his later years. Thank you, Travis Simms-Burton, Amber Baker, Ethel Ruth Davis, The Nelsons and the IlTuq community, the Staff of Senior Nutrition, Dr. Chase and Dr. Smith, the Staff of Timber Ridge and Hospice of Humboldt, Pamela Mattz and Wiliam Pecos Carpenter, Tory Colegrove & Family, Kemberlee Beckwith, Janice Yerton, Joe and Stevie Jarnaghan, Tracey Ramone and Stan and Sara Warne.
There will be a celebration of life on October 15, 2022, at the Tish Tang Campground at 1 p.m. At a later date, Henry’s ashes will be taken to Bodega Bay and scattered at sea.

2020 Best Nursing Homes - California
Tumblr media
ElderPerfect a leading publisher on senior healthcare across the United States, today announced the recipients of the Best Nursing Homes in California for 2020. These awards are designed to recognize providers based on their ability to consistently deliver excellence in the areas of Health Inspections, Quality of Residence Care, Penalties and Staffing. We’ve evaluated over 1,194 facilities, of which 324 (29%) met our top rating. This report marks the Gold Standard in terms of care for seniors. 0 Ranked Best Facilities  5/5
US Standard vs. Best Facilities
Average Number of Beds: 106 vs 95 Average Occupancy: 81% vs 83% Average Health Inspection Rating: 2.82 / 5.00 vs. 3.90 / 5.00 Average Government Rating: 3.01 / 5.00 vs. 4.49 / 5.00
Rating Methodology
Health Inspections Every year, the government assigns inspectors to conduct a formal review of nursing homes for regulatory purposes to meet the mandates outlined for Medicare and Medicaid, this aims to measure and improve the safety of residents across providers. Facilities may also be inspected when complaints are submitted or based on a reported incident. When noncompliance is identified, the facility is served a citation that indicates which regulation that was identified, along with the severity of the incident. Nursing homes are subsequently required to execute a program of resolution in order to meet compliance. Some scenarios require enforcement actions to be applied, such as a civil monetary penalty or withholding of payment(s), to incentivize resolution in a timely manner. Penalties Facilities are applied 2 types of penalties due to non-compliance / accumulation of incidents. Civil penalties are monetary fines that may be applied to a facility based on citations / infractions identified during a review. The severity of a penalty is defined primarily by the size and frequency of the infraction. Quality of Residence Care There are 3 types of resident care ratings, but for this exercise, we primarily focused on the overall quality measure rating. The quality measures (QMs) include 17 data points that are derived from clinical information reported by the respective nursing home and also from Medicare claims data submitted for payment. Ratings are calculated for the QM domain using the 4 most recent quarters for which data are available. A nursing home receives points contingent on performance on each measure (weighting distribution is not equal). Staffing Staffing research is submitted regularly by the facility and is adjusted for the requirement of the facilities residents. For each of registered nurse staff and total staffing, a 1 - 5 rating is applied according to definitions established for each category. These ratings are subsequently combined to assign an overall staffing rating. As an example, to get an overall staffing rating of 5 stars, nursing homes must earn a rating of 5 stars for both registered nurses and total staffing. Nursing homes could also be assigned a 1 star rating should they not have a registered nurse on-site daily, and do not submit staffing data, or which the data cannot be verified.

Heritage on the Marina, one of San Francisco’s premier and longest-serving retirement communities, has retained Druthers Agency to conduct the search for its next CEO/Executive Director following the retirement of current leadership. The Heritage is a non-profit corporation owned and operated by the San Francisco Ladies’ Protection and Relief Society, established in 1853 to be an innovative, charitable model for serving the vulnerable members of the Bay Area community. Originally developed as a convalescent hospital nearly a century ago, The Heritage on the Marina has provided high-quality Senior Housing and Services at its current location for more than 60 years.
This beautiful CCRC campus serves approximately 120 residents in Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing units. Located in the Marina district of San Francisco, The Heritage is set among yacht clubs, parks and a beautiful shoreline. Nearby Fort Mason Center offers a farmers’ market, art galleries and special events, and picturesque scenery. The campus is anchored by a spectacular and historic building designed by Julia Morgan (best known for her work on Hearst Castle) which was completed in 1925. After serving as a convalescent hospital for over three decades, Heritage on the Marina transitioned to a CCRC model and began offering Life Plan contracts in 1957.
Heritage on the Marina offers the warmth and comfort of a home-like atmosphere. With a full continuum of care, residents enjoy an engaged and simplified lifestyle. The staff is stable and dedicated to the residents, providing exceptional service and care at all levels. With an excellent reputation and a substantial financial endowment, Heritage on the Marina is well-positioned for continued success in the future. Under the guidance of the incoming CEO, the community will look to update and modernize the physical plant and living units, while maintaining the warm atmosphere and commitment to quality that has set The Heritage apart. This is a unique opportunity to lead a well-regarded community in daily operations while preparing the organization for sustained future success.
Successful candidates for this role will have a minimum of five (5) years of proven success in leading a Senior Living community, preferably within a non-profit setting. Nature Coast Thanks-giving
It is good to sit down and write about what makes life so worth living regularly. This time of year, I tend to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of gifts, meals, relatives, and pets. This year, I just moved into a new home and am spending a lot of time figuring out what goes where and how to best manage the new environment. In Florida’s Nature Coast, I find a daily sense of thanks for the slower pace of life and general consideration of a door opened for me, a small shop or restaurant owner greeting me when I visit, a cart shared at the grocery store, a smile from another motorist at the stop sign, and the beauty of nature that surrounds us. I will never forget moving to Brooksville in 2005 and shopping at the local Publix store with my husband one Sunday. We had moved up from the St. Petersburg area the week before. Everything seemed to be on 2/3 time. We felt like everyone should move a little faster, but then we looked at each other and said, “Guess we better get used to Brooksville time,” and we have never looked back.
Tumblr media
The Nature Coast is full of people and organizations who help each other. The Opportunity to Help a Neighbor The area encompassing Florida’s Nature Coast includes Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, and several Florida Counties north along the Gulf of Mexico until about Tallahassee. The Nature Coast that we cover includes several small towns or cities – each with a real sense of community. Events held in this area nearly always benefit a local nonprofit. We have Arts Councils, Heritage/History Councils, as well as agencies that provide help for the mentally disabled, the physically disabled and the youth and the seniors. If someone’s house burns down, the neighbors step up and hold fundraisers and businesses donate also.

I remember when Papa Joe’s restaurant in Spring Lake burned down. Joe Giarratana, the owner of the business, contacted local restaurants to get positions for his employees until they could rebuild. Fundraisers were held to help the employees and their families. It was over a year before the new restaurant was back in business, even with insurance funds to reconstruct. Many of the former employees were able to return in due time. At the time of the stock market crash, Raymond and Margaret Robins gave their fortune to back the Bank of Brooksville, preventing a horrible economic crash for the area's families and businesses. They owned Chinsegut Hill at the time. The Opportunity to Be Helped

Rachel, our little white dog who decided to go on an adventure, and was returned home. Last week, my little white dog decided to stand out on the road in front of our new house. We were having some work done by heavy equipment and I can only surmise that she didn’t like the ruckus. A good Samaritan came along and picked her up, thinking she was lost. After I realized she wasn’t home, I began searching and could not find her anywhere. I resorted to posting on all the Facebook Lost Pet/Found Pet groups I could find – until about 1 am when I collapsed.
Tumblr media
About 4 am I woke up and looked at my posts. Someone had posted a Found Dog in a different group and it was my little white dog! I immediately messaged them, eventually showing up at their gate around 8 am, hoping to see my fur baby and carrying a note. I called her name and up she ran, jumped in the truck and came home with me. I cannot thank the many people who were involved in taking care of my pet and helping me get her back safely enough. It is, however, part of the culture of Florida’s Nature Coast and I am so grateful to live here.

The Aviary’s Active Senior Community
There must be something in the water in our Aviary…
Several shorebirds have reached ages that surpass their species' life expectancy in the wild—with some resident birds living up to three times longer than their wild counterparts.
Our elders include an American avocet (at least 25 years old), short-billed dowitcher (at least 24 years old), black oystercatcher (at least 23 years old), and a willet (at least 29 years old).
"If you look at our collection en masse, we’ve got the old folks home for birds in many ways," says Dr. Mike Murray, director of veterinary services.
These super seniors owe their long lives to a potent potion of nutritious food, watchful guardians, skilled veterinary care, and special comforts like heaters and wading pools.
One other factor: Our birds have the best feet in the business.
On exhibit, shorebirds are prone to foot and leg problems, largely the result of standing on poor quality sand or other surfaces. Dr. Mike says our birds don’t have those problems because our dedicated aviculture staff, armed with whisk brooms, sifters and dustpans, meticulously sweep up debris from the swath of sand in the Aviary. Every single day.
All of our birds have distinct personalities, with some more obvious—and entertaining—than others.
"If you sit there for 30 minutes to an hour you can see all this activity, all the drama, and they're constantly moving and doing something," says Curator of Aviculture Aimee Greenebaum. "That's what makes this exhibit so much fun to watch."
You can check out the shorebird reality show—and our remarkable senior birds—in person or from anywhere on our live Aviary Cam.
Read the full story about our senior birds in the online edition of our Shorelines magazine.

Stanford Research Shows How Park-Like Tsunami Defenses Can Provide Sustainable Alternative To Towering Seawalls
Careful engineering of low, plant-covered hills along shorelines can mitigate tsunami risks with less disruption of coastal life and lower costs compared to seawalls.
In tsunami preparedness, it turns out there can be strength in beauty. Rows of green hills strategically arranged along coastlines can help to fend off destruction from tsunamis while preserving ocean views and access to the shore. For some communities, they may offer a better option than towering seawalls.
Those are the findings of a peer-reviewed paper by a team of researchers who have tried to quantify how tsunami waves of different heights interact with mounds of various sizes and shapes arranged near the water’s edge. The research was published on May 4 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Giant seawalls are the conventional approach to mitigating tsunami risk. Japan, for example, has built hundreds of miles of concrete walls, taller than 40 feet in some places, at a cost of more than $12 billion since tsunami waves crashed through seawalls and flattened coastal communities throughout eastern Japan in March 2011.
But seawalls tend to be expensive to build, tough on local tourism and fishing industries, disruptive to coastal communities and environmentally destructive – and failures can be catastrophic, said senior study author Jenny Suckale, an assistant professor of geophysics in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences (Stanford Earth).
“If the wall collapses, the consequences are life shattering,” said Suckale, whose collaborators on the study include scientists from the Naval Postgraduate School, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, MIT and Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. Seawalls can not only create a false sense of security that can discourage swift evacuations, she explained, they can also end up breaking apart into blocks of rubble that tsunami waves then toss throughout a city.
“It’s sort of intuitive that the moment you see it as a threat, you build a wall,” Suckale said. But while it’s true that seawalls can address some tsunami risks, the factors that make a place livable can be far more complicated. “Most coastal communities want to maximize their well-being, not minimize their risk at the expense of everything else,” she said. “Do you really want to live behind a huge concrete wall because there is a small chance that a big tsunami will hit you? Let’s put more options on the table and have an informed debate.”
Having more options on the table is especially important in places where resources for coastal protections are scarce, said study co-author Abdul Muhari, who leads the coastal disaster mitigation division of the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. “By having the analysis in our paper, tsunami-prone countries now have a fundamental basis for evaluating hills as a less-expensive way to mitigate tsunami risks,” he said.
Customizable and green
Coastal forests can help put the brakes on tsunami flow speeds in nearby towns and villages. These and other nature-based solutions are increasingly important in plans for coastal risk management, the researchers write. Yet it takes decades for trees to grow sturdy enough to provide meaningful protection.
And, according to the new study, vegetation has little effect on an incoming wave’s energy. Plants may still play an important role in fighting erosion, however, thereby helping to maintain the shape, height and spacing of hills that make them effective.
An alternative solution cropping up on coastlines in tsunami-prone countries around the world seeks to combine the best of both worlds: the tunability and immediacy of an engineered barrier and the coastal access and ecological function of a more porous green zone.
Until now, designs for these projects, known as tsunami mitigation parks, have been informed more by aesthetics than science. “Right now, our designs are not strategic enough,” Suckale said. “This paper is a starting point for understanding how to design these parks to derive maximum risk mitigation benefits from them.”
Design matters
By numerically modeling what happens to a tsunami wave when it slams into a single row of hills, the researchers show mounds can reflect and dampen a tsunami wave’s destructive power about as well as a typical seawall can. And in the event of a huge, one-in-a-thousand-years kind of tsunami, they will fail no worse than even the most imposing walls. As a result, the study finds, there’s little extra value to be gained from combining walls and hills – a common approach in designs from Constitución, Chile to Morino, Japan.
“These hills reflect a surprising amount of wave energy for small and intermediate tsunamis,” Suckale said. Customizing the shape of the hills based on the shape of the coastline, the direction that tsunamis are likely to approach from, and other site-specific factors can help to maximize the amount of energy reflected back. This is key, Suckale said, because “energy is really your main enemy.”
That’s because if a tsunami inundates an area at full throttle with even one foot of water, Suckale said, it will leave few survivors. “It just slams everything. You can’t stay on your feet, and once you fall, it’s very dangerous. It throws cars at buildings. You’ll easily be knocked over by things carried in the water.”
The study also points to the need for homes and infrastructure to be set back behind a broad buffer zone, because hills can speed up flows and increase damage in the area immediately surrounding the park. To avoid this unintended consequence, the researchers suggest considering designs with multiple staggered rows of hills that are larger toward the shore and smaller inland.
“Our study shows that design matters. There’s a wrong and a right spacing; there’s a wrong and a right shape,” Suckale said. “You should not use aesthetic criteria to design this.”
Suckale is an Assistant Professor of Geophysics, a Center Fellow, by courtesy, at the Woods Institute for the Environment, and a member of the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering (ICME) at Stanford. Co-author Adrian F. Santiago Tate is a PhD student in Geophysics. Co-author Brent Lunghino worked on the research as a graduate student in Stanford’s Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering. He’s now affiliated with the company ClimateAI.
Additional co-authors are affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and the Directorate of Sustainable Utilization of Coastal Zone and Small Islands, the Directorate General of Marine Spatial Management and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The research was supported by Stanford Earth, the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program, and the Office of Naval Research.

Abortion-Rights Supporters Fear Loss Of Access If Adventist Saves Hospital
For more than two years, physician assistant Dawn Hofberg fought to bring access to abortions back to California’s Mendocino Coast, a picturesque stretch of shoreline about three hours north of San Francisco and 90 minutes from the nearest facility offering abortions.
Hofberg enlisted help from local health care providers and the American Civil Liberties Union, which sent letters to the Mendocino Coast Health Care District that operates the hospital in Fort Bragg and other medical services. The letters noted that the state constitution requires public hospitals to offer abortions if they offer other pregnancy-related care.
Late last year, district CEO Wayne Allen granted a doctor at its North Coast Family Health Center permission to start providing medication abortions, which involve two drugs that can end a pregnancy.
But Hofberg and others worry that the community’s newly won abortion access could be in peril. With a net loss of $1.2 million in the 2018 fiscal year alone, the district says its only shot at survival is to lease its operations to Adventist Health, a Roseville, California-based system affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which opposes most abortions.
Dawn Hofberg, a physician assistant in Fort Bragg, California, turned to other local health care providers and the American Civil Liberties Union to help persuade the local hospital to make abortions available to some patients in her community. (Courtesy of Dawn Hofberg)
Voters will decide whether to approve the 30-year lease agreement on March 3.
Adventist officials said that despite their religious teachings that abortions should be limited to cases of life- or health-threatening pregnancies, rape, incest or severe fetal anomalies, they will not restrict the use of medication abortions at the clinic.
“We don’t control our physician practices in the way some others do and we don’t put constraints around what they can and can’t prescribe,” said Bob Beehler, an Adventist Health mergers and acquisitions executive.
Beehler said the introduction of abortion-inducing pills had changed the system’s approach to abortions. “Our historical position has been based on the way they used to be done, in a hospital.”
But abortion-rights supporters still fear what could be coming.
“Obviously, we do have a lot of concerns about Adventist’s position with respect to restricting abortion access in its facilities, and so we’re going to keep a close eye on the situation,” said Phyllida Burlingame, director of reproductive justice and gender equity for the ACLU of Northern California.
Burlingame said the deal also raises broader concerns about the spread of religious health systems that restrict care. “Not only are they taking over the private marketplace, but now they’re even spreading into these public spheres,” Burlingame said.

Similar objections from the ACLU and staff at the University of California-San Francisco last year scuttled a proposed affiliation between UCSF Medical Center and Dignity Health, a Catholic-affiliated system that restricts reproductive and transition-related care for transgender patients.
The expansion of religious systems can leave leaders of struggling hospitals with few choices when they seek to affiliate. Of the five systems to which the Mendocino hospital district issued its request for proposals last year, three were faith-based. Two responded, and Adventist was the only one that met the community’s needs, according to the district board’s treasurer, John Redding.
Nationwide, four of the largest 10 health systems and 1 in 6 acute care hospital beds are Catholic-owned or -affiliated. Seventh-day Adventists are Protestant Christian, and Adventist-affiliated systems run 87 hospitals and more than 300 other facilities in the United States, according to the Adventist Health Policy Association.
As these systems have grown, rural health care districts across California are struggling with waning patient volume and a lack of leverage to negotiate with insurers, said Sherreta Lane, senior vice president of finance policy at the District Hospital Leadership Forum, a trade association that represents all the state’s district and municipal hospitals. Many of these hospitals have closed or affiliated with private systems.
When the forum launched a decade ago, 45 districts or municipalities ran hospitals; now 35 do, Lane said.
While Catholic-affiliated systems like Dignity have received greater scrutiny for policies that restrict access to abortion, contraception, sterilization and end-of-life care, the impact of Adventist teachings on church-affiliated health systems is less known. In October, the Seventh-day Adventist Church raised concerns among reproductive health care advocates when it approved a statement saying it “considers abortion out of harmony with God’s plan for human life.”
Officials said at the time that they would develop updated protocols for church-affiliated health care institutions, where, they emphasized, few abortions are performed.
Adventist Health spokesperson Jill Kinney said in an emailed statement that the hospital system’s usual practice “is not to provide elective abortions, but we respect that patients may wish to have them.” If that’s the case, she added, “clinicians help coordinate referral and transfer to capable facilities without prejudice.”
In a response to detailed questions from California Attorney General Xavier Becerra before his office approved the system’s takeover of Delano Regional Medical Center in November, Adventist Health said it bans “elective abortions” but allows the procedure “for fetal distress and other medical reasons.” It added: “Medical abortions are performed in Adventist Health facilities,” without providing details.
In 2014, Adventist Health purchased a clinic in Fort Bragg where Dr. Eric Gutnick and his colleagues had provided reproductive health services since the 1970s. Under a contract with Adventist, Gutnick continued to see abortion patients for preoperative care in the clinic and performed surgical abortions at the Mendocino Coast District Hospital, until he retired later that year.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church’s teachings can influence other issues, too. It has opposed what it calls “transgenderism,” stating that gender identity “is determined by our biological sex at birth,” and has called homosexuality “a manifestation of the disturbance and brokenness in human inclinations and relations caused by the entrance of sin into the world.”
Arneta Rogers, an attorney for the ACLU of Northern California, voiced concern about these beliefs. “It’s not about shutting down religious entities; we just don’t want people to be discriminated against,” Rogers said in an interview.
Jason Wells, president of the Adventist Health hospitals in Ukiah and Willits, said the system cherishes diversity and its LGBTQ employees. In its statement to the attorney general, Adventist said some of its physicians provide hormones for transgender patients but none of its facilities offer “gender reconstruction surgery.”
In a statement provided by Kinney, Adventist Health said that it “strives to be free from biases related to gender identity” but that its hospitals “are not currently equipped to offer the complex, comprehensive programmatic approach necessary to provide gender reassignment treatments and surgeries.”
For many in the Mendocino community, uncertainty over the hospital’s finances has overshadowed concerns about Adventist Health’s religious affiliation as residents prepare for the vote next month. “If the affiliation doesn’t go through, I don’t know how we’ll stay in business,” said Karen Arnold, secretary of the district board.
Redding said lease payments from Adventist would allow the district to afford the estimated $24 million needed to finance upgrades required by the state to protect against catastrophic earthquake damage to its facilities.
“I wasn’t sure how we were going to do this, and now I feel that we’ve secured the future of a hospital here on the coast,” Redding said.
