Touhou: Legacy of Hakurei
So, this is an idea discussed on Discord. Might make this into the AU, but I don't know.... Been struggling with writer's block lately....
Characters
Reimu and Sendai (Main Protagonists)
Marisa and Konngara (Supporting Protagonists)
Mima and Yukari (Main Antagonists)
Story
Sendai is the descendant of Konngara and Gensokyo's last daishogun, beloved by the humans she protects and feared by the Youkai. This fear ultimately becomes great enough to where most of her initial comrades (like Mima and Yukari (who she didn't know was a Youkai at the time)) betrayed her and mortally wounded her.
To ensure her daughter's safety, she went to the Onis, carrying the infant Reimu in her arms. With her dying breath, she demands the ability to protect Reimu from anyone who might harm her. Reluctantly, the Onis agree and have Sendai resurrected as a new Konngara, with Konngara's soul being bound to her sword.
Admittedly, they attempt to make Sendai more Oni-like in terms of actions, which includes cannibalism and such. Except she remembers everything and immediately leaves with Reimu. Only a couple handfuls of loyalists in the village are notified of her new situation, given strict orders to defend Reimu from the Youkai and especially Yukari until she is able to defend herself.
After Sendai puts a barrier on Reimu to make doubly sure that she is protected, effectively being the source of Reimu's plot armor, Sendai leaves for the outside world. After that, story continues as if it were the games, though Yukari, Mima, and the Oni are noticeably more frustrated with Reimu's barrier. The humans meant to protect her are forbidden to even speak with her, unfortunately.
Eventually, Reimu learns from the deceased and disembodied soul of Konngara from HRTP that her mother is still alive, but as a new Konngara. Eventually, after a long time of searching, she finds her in Hiroshima. They converse and make up for lost time, before Reimu promises to visit every month.
For there, Sendai is introduced to Sanae, Alice, and Marisa. It's not long before Yukari catches wind of this, but unfortunately for her, Reimu and Sendai have a means of interacting regardless.
Reimu and Sendai split Reimu's soul so that she could have a new body in the real world and live some semblance of a normal life. By the time we reach now, Reimu's well into her 20s. However, things are getting worse for her in Gensokyo…and she can't really die unless it's self-inflicted.
Basically, Mima's become the new Hakurei god and now Yukari has no other obstacles in her way to pursue and kill Reimu's mother. To make sure her friends aren't hunted down by Yukari for information regarding her mother, Reimu surrenders to the gap Youkai…only to blow up in her face….
With this, Reimu's soul merges into one again, making her the strongest human that's ever lived. Not wanting to abandon her friends, Reimu convinces Sendai to help her, despite the latter not wanting Reimu to be in more danger. By the time they reach Gensokyo, the area's essentially at war.
Sendai manages to find her loyalists and helps prepare them for conflict, while Reimu manages to get her friends to safety. Eventually, Sendai comes to the conclusion that Reimu's going to need as much power as possible if she's to protect her friends, so she gives up her power and Konngara to Reimu, which brings Sendai back to her human form.
In a sense, Sendai's dying once more…but at least she's able to spend one more night with her daughter…after kicking Mima's ass. Reimu then takes matters into her own hands, determining who will be willing to stand with her to fight Yukari, Mima, and others that are soon becoming against the Dragon God.
Most of the humans, now much more prepared, willingly offer their services to Reimu (Marisa, Sendai's loyalists, and Alice). Others, like Sanae, Patchouli, and Sakuya for example, need more…shall we say, convincing due to them serving two goddesses and vampires respectively. Reimu ultimately makes short work of this foolishness and easily gets them to join her.
Reluctantly, even various supernatural beings that Reimu's close with join her.
Of course, there are enemies….
The war begins. Mima, Yukari, and their followers have the power advantage, while Reimu and her group have experience, which helps out with stronger opponents. The battle is ultimately at a standstill because of this, but it helps Reimu and Marisa (and a few other individuals) to make it to Yukari and Mima unnoticed.
The battle begins with Yukari and Mima having a clear advantage, even successfully making Reimu fumble which leads to her getting impaled by the very sword she's wielding, but Marisa's able to exploit their overconfidence, leading to Mima turning against Yukari. Konngara departs for the afterlife, which heals Reimu as she gives the latter her power.
Reimu is now effectively the sole survivor of her lineage….
Mima effectively defeats Yukari, but doesn't kill since she determines that the blonde is still useful. Reimu attempts to convince Marisa that they should retreat and rethink their strategy, though Marisa is certain that if they wait, Mima and Yukari will be strong enough to where such a strategy will already be worthless.
Marisa makes the attempt to sacrifice herself to give Reimu time, which only activates the Oni blood within her, causing Reimu to go all Onimiko on Yukari and Mima. Determined not to lose another loved one, Reimu uses her mother's power to resuscitate Marisa, before they leave.

asking with the utmost hesitancy: what is a sendai fan
Sendai literally just means 'previous generation' by itself, but it ended up essentially being used as the name for a fan design for the previous Hakurei miko. back in the day she was pretty damn popular. got lots of doujins and stuff, showed up in fangames sometimes, still has more art in her main tag on Pixiv than, like... Urumi.
and especially on the english-speaking side, for a while there this was fanon in a lot of circles. The previous Hakurei miko was Reimu's mom, named Sendai Hakurei, who was a buff lady who defeated youkai with Punch Magic.

How long had it been? Months? Years?...Decades?
Firmly within the clutches of Yukari Yakumo, Sendai Hakurei had no idea. For all extents and purposes, the entire world outside of this small foyer within which the gap youkai had stucked her...
Her, and the vast array of feeding implements she used on the former miko. What once was an athletic body to fight youkai had blimped into a pile of lard, barely able to waddle around. Her abs vanished under thick flab that jiggled with each attempt to lift herself up nowadays... Though that mattered little anymore, since there was nothing else in the room.
Until now, that was.
"Yukari, this better not be one of your tricks again..." A voice rang out. It took Sendai a moment to recognize it...but...
"Rah...Raihmoo?" Unable to speak clearly through all the flab, all Sendai could do was ask this simple question in terror... First, terrified of the indignity of being seen in this state...
And then, terrified of what it meant for her daughter that Yukari had allowed her in as well...

The Previous Generation Hakurei Miko
Who was she? What was it like for the previous generation without spell card rules? What happened to her?
All questions that never get answered in the canon, but around 2010 a MUGEN character was created to answer exactly that.
This shrine maiden was no slouch like Reimu. She represents just how powerful a Hakurei Miko can be. Her approach to combat is much different as well. Reimu uses several tools like her purification rod, yin yang orbs, and needles. The previous miko uses almost exclusively hand-to-hand combat. The abilities of a hakurei shrine maiden would be done with her fists. (like barrier techniques, purification, and sealing techniques).
I am unsure of the lore the original creator made for this character, heck, I don't even know who the creator is. (Pre-to?) Regardless, this character popped off.
This fan character becomes the most popular fanon character in the whole fandom (probably). She shows up in several different works as she was the perfect gateway to exploring a Gensokyo without spellcard rules. Plus, she could have easily been involved with several other characters as well like Yukari, Mokou, Yuuka, Aya, and any other youkai who have been around for a while. With many different creators handling her though she would get interpreted in slightly different ways.
In terms of her personality though, it was fairly consistent. She was nearly the opposite from Reimu. Very energetic and active in her duty. Despite looking intimidating, she was very sociable with humans, but her relationship with youkai was pretty different. Most feared her. Being within hearing distance from the previous miko was dangerous. The fact that no one knew her name punctuated her intimidation.
She wasn't some ruthless sadistic type though. The miko was bright and kind, only stern when upset. However, she can very easily go overboard, which is part of the reason why she scared people and youkai alike.
Weirdly enough, she's shown to have a close relationship with Rinnousuke. His past with the previous miko is a strange one. He would (sometimes unwillingly) frequently assist the miko at her "request" (he gets dragged into it). Around this time though, Rinnousuke is a swordsman trying to start a shop.
Yeah you heard me. Swordsman.
While you were enjoying your life in the human village, my mans was studying the blade. He and the miko were a tag team duo where he was the brains and she was the brawn. The previous miko was a punch first think later kind of character that Rinnousuke would need to hold back every now and then.
I make their relationship sound a little one-sided, but she was one of the very few people who treated him equally to other humans. Without her, he doesn't have anyone else to turn to. Even if she's a handful, it's a handful he wanted to hold close to him.
Okay so, that's a lot already, but this character gets around. She deals with the most powerful youkai known in touhou, she butts heads with Keine sometimes, she's covered in battle scars, and there's a whole lot more. To keep this post from being a whole book I'm gonna focus on one more topic.
Where is she now?
Reimu is the current shrine maiden, so what happened to the previous miko? Well there's two ways this goes. She's either dead or alive and operating in the shadows. In the case of being alive, there's an important doujin basically defined how the previous miko gets portrayed.
Warugaki's "Shrine Maiden's Brawl" doujin is a gag manga where the previous miko suddenly returns and ends up violently reprimanding Reimu for not properly doing her duty. (I'm grossly simplifying the end of this doujin. Don't worry, Reimu actually deserves it. Give it a read it's funny).
This pretty much introduced the idea of her still being around, but is a very powerful and stern mom who gives tough love to her daughter. She didn't lose her kindness or anything, but Warugaki's work clearly inspired a lot of the depictions of her from that point on.
And now to address the elephant in the room...
What about Osana Reimu? The previous miko is there as well, but is definitely not how I described.
I'm pretty sure they are two separate characters, but they play the same role, so no real relation. The miko in Osana Reimu may have some inspiration from the MUGEN character, but there's so many differences I am going to mark them down as separate characters unless I see some evidence otherwise.
Whew! That's a big post, but I wanted to talk about as much as I could about this character as she is pretty cool, but I doubt there are many appearences of her nowadays. I couldn't fit something like this into fanon year posts, so here we are.
I'd love to see this character show up more though.
#touhou#text#fanon#long post#mugen#the previous hakurei miko#Hakurei Miko#Sendai Hakurei No Miko#i rewrote this 3 times to not spoil Osana Reimu at all lmao#sorry I didn't super research this. I wrote just my observations of her#shoutouts to warugaki's one punch parody with the hakurei miko. That was fire

Visiting the Devil
@cruentusscarlet
One little fact that the Sendai Hakurei no Miko couldn’t seem to quite get over was just how much Gensokyo had changed since she’d been gone. Sure, she’d been gone literal years, but it was still pretty jarring. Most of the old guard was still the same as ever, but there were so many new faces nowadays that she hardly knew where to start. This wasn’t helped that apparently everyone now used this “spellcard system” thing to resolve their disputes. That probably wouldn’t stop being weird to her anytime soon; after all, for all intents and purposes, it seemed like even the most dire of circumstances recently had been resolved with the youkai equivalent of a children’s card game.
Regardless of how new and strange this all was to her, however, she wasn’t the type to dwell on things. As such, she’d almost instantly resolved to travel around and do a meet-and-greet with all of the new faces. Well, first she’d taken a moment to reunite with Reimu and ruthlessly smother her precious baby girl with affection, but she’d headed off straight after that. She’d decided to visit them in roughly the order she’d been told they’d appeared in, and so, she’d made her way to where this “Scarlet” person lived.
It didn’t take long to find the place Reimu had described; the mansion stuck out like a sore thumb in the supremely Asian Gensokyo. The gatekeeper (“Hong Meiling”, apparently) had tried to keep her out, and Sendai had to admit, she was a pretty damn skilled martial artist. Unfortunately for her, she was trying to oppose a Hakurei, who are often regarded as living breathing cheat codes.
Both the gatekeeper and the maid that followed ended being dealt with in the same way; a polite greeting, some friendly small talk, an insistence that Sendai leaves, a refusal, a “fight”, and then Sendai moved on after they’d exhausted themselves fruitlessly attacking her. It was a simple, if rather rude, way of dealing with those she had no interest in harming, but it worked like a charm (and as a miko, she knew her charms). With those two out of the way, the mansion didn’t really have anything to throw at her (unless the library’s inhabitants felt like being social right at this moment).
The kindly tyrannical (or perhaps tyrannically kind) visitor to the Scarlet Devil Mansion strode into the throne room with a steady and unwavering gait, as if she was not, in fact, breaking and entering. It wasn’t a pace filled with confidence so much as it was one that lacked any doubt. It was only when she found herself before the mansion’s Mistress that she deigned to halt her advance, and she considered the vampire as she spoke. She didn’t bother to use her real given name when she introduced herself; if the vampire was a new(ish) arrival, that name wouldn’t mean anything to her anyway. “You must be Remilia Scarlet. I’m Reimu’s mother; you may call me Sendai. Nice to meet you.”
Yes, she was in fact just going to ignore that she’d barged in unannounced and made all but made fools of Remilia’s top two servants; why do you ask?

So, I figured it'd be a good idea to explain more about Sendai's history here, so here a few important things about her. Just a reminder, Sendai's name in this AU is Megami.
Does Sendai have any romantic or sexual feelings for her associates and allies?
Believe it or not, the only people she has a good relationship that could result in that are Mima (who's Marisa's mom in this AU), Ran, and Kanako. However, she has no experience of any kind.
How did Sendai become Reimu's mother?
The short answer is that Reimu was adopted by her.
The long version is that Sendai was physically unable to bare children (due to a specific condition/sickness), but she wanted to be a mother, so she looked for orphanages in hopes to adopt a child.
Eventually, she came across a baby girl that she knew she'd been able to have a strong connection with. However, many people noticed that the baby had a dangerous and unknown power within her and tried to convince Sendai to not adopt the child.
Sendai refused and when people tried to take the baby from her, she violently retaliated. Thus, Sendai became the baby's adoptive mother, naming the baby Reimu.
Sendai was aware of Reimu's power, but decided that raising and nurturing her would be a far better solution, wanting to give her daughter a normal life.
Of course, Sendai's frustrated that Reimu's unable to have that normal life, being forced to take up her mother's place as the shrine maiden.
How did Sendai become as powerful as she is and how did she get the demon and angel forms?
This is a two-part question, so I figured grouping them together would be better.
So, the reason why Sendai's so OP is MOSTLY because of the demon and angel forms. They do give her strength that is leagues beyond most of Touhou's cast, even surpassing Yukari.
She got these forms by making a deal with a VERY powerful (but dead) youkai who was aligned with Hell and the Shinto gods. In exchange for power to protect her home, Sendai needed to be bonded to said youkai and the gods.
This gave her absurd levels of power and various abilities that made her feared by humanity and youkai-kind.
The angelic abilities are what frightened the youkai, as the demon form's powers aren't TOO different from most demons. For reference, the angelic powers are similar to the abilities of the Ark shown in Raiders of The Lost Ark (one of my favorite adventure films).
The forms came with very serious flaws. The angel form literally had to feed on Sendai's life force, which is what caused her accelerated aging. The demon form, on the other hand, had to feed on the souls of humans.
This meant that Sendai had to consume the souls of her human opponents. This is why Sendai RARELY used this form, as she began seeing herself as a monster.
I'm not sure if I want the souls to haunt Sendai from inside her, as humans are not built to ingest souls, or have the souls perish like actual food, thus sending the souls to the afterlife.
Still working on the flaws. Might add more, might not. Dunno.
Does she have other forms?
Theoretically, Sendai can have two other forms, as she's dead. But given her trauma with the demon and angel forms, she's more likely to not use forms, other than her base and normal forms.
If she were to focus more on controlling the angelic powers, she would achieve a power akin to that of the Dragon God, thus surpassing the entire Touhou cast. Her hair and eyes would be yellow and glowing green respectively (yes, like a Super Saiyan), as well as gain a halo.
If she let herself go down the path of the demons, she would gain power that would surpass every devil and demon known to humanity. Her hair would've become white and her eyes purple with black sclera. She would also have horns.
However, if she had time to strengthen her own humanity, she would have an appearance similar to that of Mikumo Kushinada from the manga/anime Kenichi. Her hair would've been more flowy and her eyes would've been brown to represent her more natural growth.
The RAREST possibility is, if she somehow managed to accept and merge her humanity with her demon and angel powers, she could have become stronger than the Dragon God. Her hair and eyes would've been silver and she would have all the strengths of her forms.
Out of all of these possibilities, the form that represents her humanity is the most likely outcome and the one she's currently attempting to achieve.
Will, has, or would Reimu be able to achieve or gain forms like Sendai's?
Technically, she has, but only by theme.
Her base form has evolved and become much stronger, due to experience. She has transformations based on the Oni Miko (demon) and White Reimu (angel) characters from MUGEN. She also has the Blue Reimu form, which is related to White Reimu.
The Maga-Reimu (Wicked Reimu) is similar to the youkai form, but here, it's the Hakurei God using Reimu as a host. This ultimately means Reimu has no control of her actions, unless the two are separated.
Will add more soon.
Touhou Project AU: Fate of Gensokyo
Lore
Setting: Set where Reimu (and other characters her age, like Marisa) is in her late teens (at youngest, she's 17, while at oldest, she's 19).
Synopsis: A few years after her latest adventure, Reimu has begun to make her own choices in life, becoming more independent as she strives to forge her own future. However, a new threat is arising from within Gensokyo; a threat that will determine the futures of EVERYONE within it.
Changes
The STORY change is a result of me not being a fan of ZUN's storytelling. I find certain stories in the Touhou games to be boring and not as serious or interesting as they could've been, as they have serious potential.
Most CHARACTER changes are due to the characters' age and the AU's plot. This includes a more mature personality (while staying true to canon) and appearance (while not over-exaggerating). At most, the human characters are a full foot taller and have a lean, athletic, or muscular build now, due to the amount of fighting that's happened as a result of the incidents.
A few human characters has headed to the outside world for a different path in life. These include Sakuya, Marisa, and Reimu.
Out of all the characters, Reimu is the one who changes most significantly. She has grown taller, has shorter hair, has a more muscular build, and has become more serious.
As stated earlier, she has begun searching for her own path in life. A life OUTSIDE of Gensokyo and being a shrine maiden. This has caused some friction between her, other maidens, and of course, Yukari.

About the Sendai Hakurei No Miko
Okay, so given that this character is the most popular OC in Touhou content, I would like to go over my interpretation of her.
Firstly, she has four official forms.
Her human form was what her base form evolved from. It is very similar to her base, with the exceptions of being shorter, having shorter hair, a lean and thin physique, and black eyes. This is what she was like when she was in her early 20s.
Her base form (provided by Rion) is her fueled with her powers as a shrine maiden. In terms of appearance, this is what she looked like when she was at her prime and raising the infant/toddler Reimu, so in her late 20s to early 30s. Her eyes are blue, she's lean and fit, and has short hair.
Her demon form (provided by warugaki) is her borrowing the powers of Hell. Due to this, her appearance changes to having much longer hair, a more voluptuous body, an increase in height, and piercing red eyes, all matched with a cold-blooded killer-instinct demeanor.
Her angel form (provided by lockheart) is her using the powers of the heavens. Her appearance is similar to her demon form, which the sole changes being her yellow eyes and her overall demeanor being less threatening and far more calm, though still intimidating.
Her end form is an older version of her base form, as well as much weaker, due to her shrine maiden powers sweeping away as she gets older. Her accelerated aging is a horrendous side effect of her power usage and consumption, so while she in her late 30s, she looks like she's in her 50s to 60s. Her hair is now gray. Her eyes are white, due to her power usage. Her physique is frail and thin. However, she is able to use her base form's power and transform into a more youthful state, at the cost of her power becoming even weaker.
In regards to her personality, in both her base and true forms, she has a gentle and more cheerful demeanor surrounding her. She is filled with so much love in her heart that she can't bare the thought of losing someone she cares about. She can be a worrywart, but she knows to trust people. In spite of her forms, this never changes. She is best described as a Mama Bear/Wolf and is a good mother to Reimu, in spite of Sendai's struggles and challenges.
In terms of fighting prowess, just watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5trgSvUAGM

headcanon: previous hakurei shrine maiden
While she doesn’t remember her personally, Reimu is correct in assuming the shrine maiden before her was her mother. Her whereabouts in the present day are unknown, but it’s highly likely that she has since died, whether it be of illness or a youkai attack.
Her mother’s name was Hakurei Ukiyo. (art by Atoki!)
Ukiyo was, for the most part, Reimu’s primary tutor regarding the regular duties of the Hakurei Shrine maiden — tending to the barrier, purification rituals, youkai extermination, and so on and so forth. Reimu’s proficiency in these areas comes from the fact she’s been learning the ins and outs since early childhood from a patient and kind teacher who was striving to see her excel.
By some stroke of terrible luck, Ukiyo vanished without much of a trace sometime before The Highly Responsive to Prayers, leaving Reimu to fend predominantly for herself despite her young age. By some stroke of good luck, many of Reimu’s early childhood memories have been lost to her mind, and thus the disappearance of her family holds little weight over her daily life. This doesn’t prevent her from occasionally getting nostalgic, of course — especially when one of the youkai who knew Ukiyo bring her up in conversation.
Due to a lack of suitable art for my preferred headcanon appearance of the former shrine maiden, Ukiyo will not have a faceclaim until later.
#( headcanons !! )#forgot to mention it when i first posted it: click the link to be brought to some A+ sendai hakurei miko art by atoki!#the first headcanon of the blog..........#and i post it in the middle of trying to do laundry
