Colin Bridgerton learns early in his life not to be too loud. Too open. Learns not to give all of himself to anything, putting on a perpetual pretense. To be cheerful. Charming. Agreeable. It makes him feel useful. It makes him feel in control.

His papa dies when he is twelve. Colin is still shorter than Daphne. She laughs at him when they play games together because she can reach the taller branches on the tree. He skinned his knee last week trying to run after the family dog, Tippet, or Tippy, as he liked to call her, when she ran off with Frannie's doll. His papa dies when he is 12 and as it happened, all he could think was that Papa would get back up, soon, as he watches him laying there among the flowers, Mum in shambles and the whole family on the steps. Colin learns. He learns no one has the space for his grief in light of their own, and Anthony is the new head of the family, and Benedict is trying to take care of the siblings, and what good is Colin?

Colin can't do anything. Colin can't do anything but try to make it lighter, better, easier. Try to be useful any way he can.

So, he comes to his mum, cradled away in her dark room, the curtains perpetually closed, pale and wane and laying on the bed, always, her palms feeling at the linen on the left side that she refuses to have changed. Because he thinks he can be useful. He thinks he can be good. Make her smile. And he loves her. And he misses her. In confinement, several months pregnant, when she lays on her side, she still cannot adjust to the feeling of a flat bedspread, back perpetually turned to the door. She doesn't want to see anyone. Almost can't even bear to. But Colin sneaks in. Colin sneaks in with biscuits he foists from the kitchens, and paper flowers (like the kind she taught him to make for all those birthday hats, fingers quick and nimble, some of the only time he is ever allowed to favor his left), and flowers he picks from the gardens of Aubrey Hall. He sneaks in, calling a hesitant

into the dust, and maybe it's only because he will be gone, soon, off to Eton, that she tolerates it. The time he has left with mum is short so yes, Colin comes into the mausoleum. As often as he can. As often as he is capable of. And he tries to make mum happy. But he can't. He can't make it better for her. He brings her treats and he holds her hand and he tends the tomb. Changes out the funeral flowers when they rot, the way the maids are never allowed to, tucks mama into bed as she blinks glassy, swallows, then turns away.

In his boyhood, he has one final, awful cry with her. The last sobs of his childhood to his mum. Comes in to try to cheer her up again, to bring levity, but today is a bad day, he feels it near instantly. There are always bad days. They aren't always, but there always will be. Mum's voice rings out, soft and disbelieving

But he just lost his father. and he's small, and he's scared and he'll be leaving, soon, everything familiar to him, all his family. Eton, so, so soon.

he's wailing. Just a boy crying to his mum because he needs her, but it only makes Violet feel worse, cry worse, hurt worse, because she can't be needed. Not now. Can't provide him any comfort, and Colin knows. he feels it. after that moment, he knows. he knows it's agony for his mum to see him upset and he knows she can't help him. he knows she can't handle it and he knows he feels awful asking her to. so, when he leaves the room, completely wiped out, he promises himself he'll never put her through it again. and he sticks to it. because Colin's already lost his dad, he just can't bear to lose what he has left of his mum, too.

So, Colin learns to be cheerful. Is cheerful, up until the day he goes, off to learn about Greek Mythology and Abstract Mathematics, studying philosophy and religion and boxing and learning how to be a man from strangers.

but of course it aches. Colin cries alone. Curled fetal in bed in the secrecy behind a locked door. No one wants his sorrow. Or his anger. He's scrappy as a boy, angry at Eton. His father didn't go here. Nor his brothers, off at Oxford. A distinguished school for distinguished men, men of titles, men of power. For Colin, for a third son, Eton was beyond agreeable, beyond generous of his father to have set the funds aside for. And Colin appreciated Eton, yes, but it was also where he learns to lock his fury behind his sternum and even when it claws to be free, he shoves it down until he can wrap his wrists for a spar. Colin learns to hide in plain sight.

Everything, everywhere, everyone: he leaves.

Colin cultivates a talent for leaving. Until it thrums in his blood, bleeds out into the tapestry of his existence. As a boy, he sneaks snails in Benedict's bed and leaves off to hide in the linen closet from his fury. He waves goodbye to Daphne on the steps, his younger sister already looking so much older and heavier and faraway, leaning on Eloise as his carriage rolls off. His papa dies and he leaves. Each year, Eton, he leaves and finds Mama a shade more vibrant than last time. The world moves on away from him, aside from him, outside of him. Marina breaks his heart and he leaves. Lady Whistledown break his heart and he leaves. and each time he is Back, he is also in the background.

when he returns after his second tour, this time, it's Penelope who's changed. Penelope who looks at him differently. Penelope like he has never seen her. and he feels so much a stranger as he always did each time he left, but never felt with her, before. in a way, their closeness had been his sanctuary. steadfast. like a heartbeat. like a drum. when it falters, when she avoids him, and when she breaks his heart unknowing she could, and when he finds out she's Lady Whistledown, he leaves. and he hides. and he keeps it in secret.

keeps it poorly. because his mum is a smart woman and even though he's tried not to let her see it, somewhere in her, she can always know when her boy is in pain. he's of her blood, her body, a fragment of her soul. and when she comes to him, this time, when she recognizes this heartbreak and he can no longer keep it in, for the first time in a decade, Colin breaks open, and he cries to his mum

and then, up above, the blinding sun A continuation of another thing I wrote a little more than a year ago. Basically, it's Jeyne P reuniting with some people who seem to have played (in my opinion) interesting roles in her storyline, that is Arya, Walda, Sansa, Sandor and Beth + her relationship with Theon, this time more resentful, but still loving. The political plot lacks credibility and most of the relationships are conflicting. I know most of us want Jeyne to have a happy ending, often pictured with Theon or Sansa, but I think that she has the right to feel very conflicted about those two persons in particular and could eventually develop some misplaced anger. A friend has been reading it and she said it felt a bit like a coming-of-age story.

decapitate me like one of your wildling girls Stupid name for my take on Jon meeting and intending to behead Theon, but narrated and witnessed through Qarl the Maid (who isn't very fond of Theon but knows Asha loves him), Alysane Mormont (who also doesn't like Theon but is concerned about "Arya's" wellbeing ) and Justin Massey (who feels ambivalent but thinks keeping Theon alive might be useful). The three POVs are supposed to try to advocate for Jon to pardon Theon, but it's difficult when the only attachment they feel to that cause is as a proxy for other affections/political plans.

Dog eats dog. Character study type of thing about characters associated to dogs who are somehow involved in Theon's narrative. I don't know how to explain this very well but I just really love how the dog theme plays so ambiguously in ASOIAF's northern/Theon plot. On the one hand, you have Ramsay who has been referred to as a "Mad dog" and seems to want to spread this diagnosis by hunting and raping women and then also letting them be practically reborn as hounds that will perpetuate that circle of violence. You have him incorporating Theon & Jeyne into his bitches, Jeyne's life is saved both times by people who have dog imagery associated with them, Theon beheads Farlen, the kennel master, only to then be made to sleep with the dogs and also remark on Ramsay's kennel master, Ben Bones, in a somewhat sympathetic way and there is even more. So essentially, character study fanfics about Farlen, Palla, Ramsay's girls, Ben Bones, Jeyne, Sandor and Theon.

Theon's story already has a lot of women suffering for the sake of his narrative and I wouldn't want to add even more of that, but I wrote this while mourning and it was somewhat cathartic.

Tiberius my poor little son of a bitch I think I mentioned how GRRM based Stannis of Tiberius, but Tiberius is a much darker character. After the only two people whom he felt loved by (his brother Drusus and his wife Vipsania) are separated from him, he becomes despicable and ruins every single other relationship in his life. This is supposed to be about three other people who actually loved him, even if he became a monster, and were pushed aside by him. His mother, Livia, whom he begrudged for having pushed him into becoming emperor and suspected to have killed Drusus. He refused to see her on her deathbed. His son, Castor, whom he resented for reminding him of Vipsania and refused to listen to him about Sejanus (who was planning a coup against Tiberius). Castor is poisoned by Sejanus after being rejected and mocked by his father. His nephew, Germanicus, Tiberius' true and loyal military commander, whom he envies terribly because he is extremely popular while Tiberius is hated. His envy turns into paranoia into plotting and allowing his death.

Do you think that Hassel can be originally from Johto? Since Blackthorn City is a home of probably the most well-known active dragon clan in the series so far (since Draconids, the people Zinnia's from, are mostly gone)? I've seen theories that the little cape Hassel has on his jacket is a call back to the capes "dragon tamer" trainer class has (and I'm mostly agreeing with this). And when I thought about it, I had this idea: What if Hassel's first pokemon wasn't the baxcalibur that's his ace now, but the dragonite he uses in the school champion tournament? Since the dragon clan from Blackthorn mostly uses the dratini line. What if he got that dragonite as a dratini when he was a kid and raised it his whole life, and now kinda retired it after a lifetime of battling? Baxcalibur is his main now during champion assesment, but he brings out dragonite for some friendly competition every once in a while, like the school championship. And, of course, that would mean that Hassel, Lance and Claire are distantly related.

Oh and I think that Hassel is totally besties with Rika. Gay/lesbian solidarity who go to brunches together. I think that it would be a fun contrast between his husband being such a grandiose artistic mind and his bestie being a very grounded and sober-thinking person.

Oh my god, could you imagine if the DLC will allow us to have some kind of a gym leader/elite four doubles tournament like they did in SWSH? If I'll get to see Hassel and Brassius fight together in doubles as partners I think that I will explode.

I'm also super excited to see them both in the anime and maybe, down the line, in masters. And I hope that they will somehow will return/be referenced in the DLCs- the first one is a school trip, so maybe Hassel will go as a chaperone.

And I totally get you about fanfics and such- I'd love to write something for them one day, when I will have a specific concept in mind. I'm thoroughly disappointed that I can't find any character studies for them, my favorite genre 😔 do you have any headcanons you'd like to share? 👀

I've got Hassel from Johto, Galar, or a region we haven't been to yet. Regardless of which region, I figure all the dragon clans are connected in some way so he's cousins with Lance and Clair in some sort of way. The childhood dratini -> semi-retired dragonite is definitely one I've seen and discussed before. I think the fic where Hassel rescues/nurtures a sick baby one isn't on AO3 but it's cemented for me that he's had it since he was young <3

The cape is a nice visual to connect him to other dragon tamers and it being short and part of his jacket also separates him from the dramatic looks of Lance and Clair

I think Rika teases Hassel for being old and out of touch but it's just friendly banter. I hope she was the one who told him about "fleek" over a cup of coffee with pastries.

I pray so hard for them teaming up for double battles (my drawing of them in a silly double battle pose) and/or for them to be at the festival at all (I drew them in the outfits from the trailer). I'm hoping for crumbs at most but I definitely want so much more of these two. They're so interesting.

I am so impatient to see Hassel in the anime. Besides that I love him, I also need to see him moving in 2D so I can figure out how to draw him better/more easily because he gives me so much trouble 😅. I want to know what kind of voice they give him too. Brassius' voice surprised me but it worked really well and wasn't distracting

If they end up in Masters, then I will be downloading Masters. God I want to see them put in funky alternate outfits. And whatever else happens in that game.

I'm super self-conscious about writing (and as you can imagine from my drawings, I'm all about that soft, tender shit) so most things I write pretty much live on Discord

I'm a little head-empty right now so the only headcanon that immediately comes to mind is that Brassius being ill and them spending a lot of quiet time together while Hassel helps care for him gave them both time to figure out their feelings and they don't do anything about it until after Brassius is better.

I don’t think the hints of something bigger being attached to him are necessarily slim because the Goop and the fact they keep bringing it up and referencing IGBP. They’re gonna have to explain what’s up with that at some point I think. But I also think we’ve got a soft magic system going here, and while I think we might eventually get some more hints on how he got his TV person body, how it works is just… not something that I think will be elaborated on. Headcanons though. Could get cool with it.

God though now that’s the idea of the Engine Room’s wishing star granting Little Puzzles’ wish to reach out for help and make a friend has taken root in my head. Ooough. And then he’s disconnected from it, and he loses everything all over again. And he feels betrayed, the one time he ever remotely opens up… The most vulnerable part of himself gaining the strength to force to the surface… auggh. Had to make some edits to the character playlist over that one.

Anyway I don’t know about Puzzles constantly streaming his evil plans because you’d think… he would’ve ended up in jail a lot sooner than WOTFI if he was live streaming himself committing the atrocities. I like the idea though maybe they’re dark web livestreams maybe Bob watches them. That said he WAS in the comedy zone at the time there are cameras there but I figured they were hooked up to Four’s in-universe YouTube channel. Which is funny. Everyone sees that TV guy again and he told a bad pun. And that plus Leggy is enough to get him two stars.

And Yeah! Why don’t they get to keep scars! Why is the only time someone gets to obtain and keep a scar the one Axol got offscreen! (And SMG1 and 2 but they had those when they were introduced so I don’t really count that…?) It bugs me so much! Axolotls don’t even GET scars! Okay so these adorable teams all have the softest spot for their tiny little manager-chan, and here's how they all treat her.

They are extremely laid back with you, compared to some of the other teams. They give you your space, at the same time listen to you when you have something to say.

Respectful simps. Similar to how they act with Kiyoko (ugh yes queen-chan) they're in tears whenever you do things to motivate them, like cheer at their practice matches or give them good luck charms.

They still have the good luck charms you fastened on their bag before one of the matches.

Tanaka and Noya would literally worship the ground which you walked on. Like wow how did they get so lucky as to have three?? Cute managers?? On their team??

Yachi and you would probably subtly simp over Kiyoko with them too ngl.

Hinata and Kags would probably see you as an older sister, eventho you're their age because you're so caring and responsible.

Suga is literally your mom and Daichi is your dad. They make sure you're all healthy and you're doing well in school.

Asahi gives you hugs whenever you're sad or upset! Fite me but I think this gentle baby gives the best hugs ever >:( he's like your comfort senpai and you'd do the same for him, especially when he's feeling insecure or down.

Yams would probably be very shy around you, but he'll warm up in time.

Ahhh the best part. Tsukki! He'd find you annoying and simply not get why you're so Mcfreaking happy at first (shut up u salty beanpole, manager-chan is just a ray of sunshine, okay?) But he soon finds it endearing and slowly gets closer to you.

You walk home with Yams and Tsukki every day since your houses are close, and Tsukki walks you to your door to make sure you're safe!

Matsukawa and Hanamaki give you headpats and like taking selfies with you, much to Oikawa's dismay. He wants to be the only one taking pictures with you.

Shirabu is your voice of reason and you and him often study together. You also have deep and philosophical conversations at 12 a.m. over text, and it is just so wholesome.

He respects you so much, not just because you care for him, but because he finds your brain so fricking smexy.

These eagle babies bring out the best in you and you're always eager to push them forward and bring out the best in them.

First thing's first, besides Akaashi, you are the only other person who can cheer up an emo-mood Bokuto.

Just say "Hey Bo, you're gonna look so much cooler when you spike the ball like the true ace that you are" and his hair's all perking up and his eyes are shining.

Akaashi thinks you are an angel sent from heaven.

You're very soft on your baby owls, and they genuinely just love getting positive affirmations from you.

Akaashi always blushes when you compliment him on his sets. And you can hear him murmur genuine words of gratitude.

The other members do too. They're glad because sometimes people focus on Bo too much and forget to give them recognition, yk? It's easy to get overlooked :(

But thanks to manager-chan who's so attentive with all of them, and who's aware of all their quirks and moods, they're all so touched and so so happy.

You have a habit of getting cold pretty often, especially since practice finishes late and it's pretty chilly by then.

Enter Suna Rintaro, your meme king. He definitely records funny moments that happen during practice and send them to you, just to make you laugh, or memes of the members.

He also definitely takes pictures of you when you aren't noticing, simply because he likes the way your hair looked, or because you looked so beautiful.

Like the twins, his eyes widen whenever you kiss his cheek or ruffle his hair, and it's literally like suna.exc has stopped functioning.

Omimi might come across as stoic and cold but he's actually a huge softie, and you often give him positive affirmations.

He's also definitely a huge lover of your hugs, and looks forward to them as motivation to play well.

He'd never tell you though, he's shy™.

Would drop anything and everything to help you if ever needed.

They think you're they're entire world because you go above and beyond for them, and they genuinely love you. Like actually LOVE you to bits and pieces.

Since we both ship them, I've got to ask for some KenMiya headcanons. How do you picture Ken and Miyako getting together? Who does the confessing? Who initiates the first kiss? How do you picture their general dynamic as a couple? And are there any misconceptions of them as a ship that you'd like to address?

Oh boy! I get to actually talk about the ship in detail!

(By the way, I want to say that, with a few exceptions, I'm open to talking about ships in general; I think people get the impression that Ken/Miyako and Takeru/Daisuke are the only two ships I'm all that interested in, but it's actually just that those are the only two I'm personally comfortable writing as a fanfic writer at this point, which is a huge difference from what I enjoy personally. I'm really picky about my own writing, so just because I like a ship doesn't mean I feel comfortable writing any fanfic with it yet...)

I think one of the most interesting semi-paradoxes when it comes to Ken/Miyako is that a lot of people understand it's canon, and the most common reading of why is that Miyako canonically established that Ken was her type in 02 episode 8 (and never really let up on complimenting the hell out of his looks thereafter). Therefore, the idea is that she'd ask him out eventually. Thing is, though, most people actually into the ship and studying its dynamics have concluded the opposite: that Ken would be into Miyako but it'd totally go over her head. The reason is that the former reading misses one key factor: Miyako has absolutely godawful self-esteem bordering on self-hatred, and you'll notice that when she talks about someone being hot or cute, she's not flirting or anything; she does it as a way of complimenting them, never in the sense of remotely having the illusion that she has a chance with them. So even if Ken turned out to be absolutely her type, she's probably already eliminated the idea that she'd ever have a chance with him and is just grateful that someone so awesome gets to be her friend. (And, of course, 02 episode 25 makes it very clear that she was interested in reaching out to him on more than just sheer attraction; I absolutely beg people to not pigeonhole her into the idea she only took an interest in him because she found him hot.)

So the appeal of the ship comes from the sheer irony that Miyako could have someone who fits her "ideal type" in almost every respect, and that said person could start developing a thing for her because of her lovely brightness and capacity for making others happy, and she would have absolutely no idea because she has such a difficult time conceiving that anyone would actually like her in that way. The way Ken treats Miyako in Kizuna seems to support this directionality (even subtly), and I imagine it's why they don't really seem to be dating at this time even though we're only a few years off from them having their first kid, for goodness's sake -- they've known each other this long, and if they could finally commit it wouldn't take long for them to go all the way, but because Miyako is so dense, it's turned into some kind of bizarre mutual pining affair.

(You might notice that I also write for Takeru/Daisuke, which has similar shades of "trying to get someone's attention but it completely goes over their head due to lack of self-confidence", and now you understand why I write for these two in particular.)

So yes! We have Miyako who's bright, lovely, affectionate, and wonderful, and well-liked by the others in the group, but is dense and self-effacing and probably wouldn't even consider herself someone worthy of that kind of affection, versus Ken who's more straightforward about his emotions and has been spending his time understanding what he better wants and how to speak out about it. In the end, I do think it's going to be him who initiates most of just about everything, because it's an uphill battle of getting Miyako to accept that she's worthy of anything or that she has the right to ask more of anyone. How it actually starts to begin with...well, we don't have a lot of canonical content that gives us much to work with in how they initially hook up (and, maybe a bit selfishly, I don't actually want them to give it to me explicitly, because a good percentage of the reason I write for this is the fun of the challenge of figuring it out), but I'm a little intrigued by the fact Miyako decided to go to Spain. Of all things. Where they speak a language her future husband is known to be proficient in. A lot of people have noticed this one...

Ultimately, they're both very affectionate people! While Ken ostensibly seems more restrained, a lot of his personal character arc was about him learning to embrace affection from his family again (the whole "Ken-chan" thing comes from his mother, after all), and Miyako doting on everyone goes without saying, and they made it clear that she's a wonderful person who makes other people happy and makes them laugh (02 episodes 38, 50). So yes, by choosing to be with her, maybe he signed up for quite a handful in the future, but he adores that handful all the same. And, of course, that Miyako would spare no moment in doting on her kind and loyal and smart boyfriend goes without saying.

random writing idea dump. rambling warnings ahead: THIS little peace of music haunts my head ever since i first heard it.

first, the atmosphere of this song is hard to pinpoint (for me) since it starts as a lazy and well-fed afternoon chat in a hotel’s lounge room between two visitors who just met here on their shared vacation (it was a random encounter). one is obviously more interested in the other (i’m a simple person: male is singing this whole thing?, the male is the more invested one). they been flirting since day 1-2 because, it’s a vacation and it doesn’t have to be serious. this conversation is either at the middle of their stay, or one is in the middle of their stay and the other will leave in a day or two (that’s why it’s more upset, towards the end (the singing) and by the end it’s desperate/aggressive (the sounds)

so if you could follow my complete disaster of bullet-analysis i think you also have some idea about the dynamic between the characters. (the male is easiest pictured if you focus on the voice, the way he speaks, what words he uses (the lyrics) and the other by how the male pictures them.)

and if you’ve been here before i use musics for fanfic ideas mostly. so. here’s where i’m in a deep ---.

this dynamic is a pretty specific for any couple- friends, one night stands, because only a few canon includes this level of possible toxicity. and headcanons that would include it, may be waaay out of character. which i don’t support much.

but what fandom are we even talking about?

that’s my other problem.

my first reaction was out of habit: Hetalia. but that’s an out of character headcanon of mine so i will see myself out right now with that, thank you.

second was my current favorite fandom: Spy x Family. while i’m happy to see any new Yor Loid interaction, this is the anti-thesis of their dynamic. but. Yuri on the other hand... may be somewhat similar to the male in the singing. this could lead to a longer ‘semi-slowburn’ half au for Yuri and ??? Fiona? someone new? a random person? i write semi-slowburn because the first half of the fic would be spend on the surroundings and how he’s there in that situation and so on. but once everything is established, and you can replicate the tension of the music in words, i would say it will be an interesting story. on this train of thought there’s another blind idea: Handler fic. by her being the target of this lazy-layed out urgent attention. and then we can see her in action.

third that came to mind was Cowboy Bebop. Either Spike and Julia or a Vicious character study. Or Spike with someone else. Or one of Faye’s mis-adventures. the options are limitless, because those characters aren’t just black or white and they can be toxic towards each other just as much as they can heal each other.

forth in row was Gangsta. i have to admit i couldn’t catch up to the latest episodes in the manga, yet it can work as an in cannon missing afternoon between some characters, or a half-au.

fifth: Magic Kaito 1412. a specifically kid au. because fanon kid is sometimes fits this person. and i love a good angst or some subtle thriller. 

because no matter how i listen to this song it’s a disturbing one. but a beautifully powerful disturbing one. so if you also like to use songs to write interactions between characters, i can find you some more.

I’m gonna start with C so I can put B under a cut.

C. Send me the name of any fanfic I’ve written and I’ll give you my headcanons or a drabble about another character in that universe.

Uncle Eddie raising the boys!

He regrets not pushing them to stay in school longer. He all but assumed they were going into the same business as him and Ray, teaching them everything he knew and giving them to tools they needed not to get caught at an early age, and it wasn’t until an already dropped out Seth showed interest in possibly doing something else that he realized he should have made them both graduate, so they’d at least have options. (Richie may have shown other interests as well, but since it was stated in the first season that Richie’s the one who got Seth into being a career criminal and they seemed to have started fairly young, I’m mostly convinced Seth was the only one who wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do with his life.) It’s not a major regret or anything, and it all worked out in the end, but he does look back and think that he shouldn’t have let them close the door on other options until they were both sure.

Uncle Eddie never knew just how big of a bastard Ray was to his kids. Why would he? The guy was his partner, his brother in everything but blood, and they lived in different states. Sure, he knew the guy drank too much after his wife ran out on him and left him raising two boys alone, but he never saw any suspicious bruises during the few times he’d visit in person or heard him make any kind of real threat. He didn’t know, and he never learned. Maybe if he had he wouldn’t have filled the boys heads’ with stories about the Great Ray Gecko. Wouldn’t have told them repeatedly how much their old man was a legend and that they should be proud to be his sons. He thought he was doing right by his partner, right by the boys, giving them stories of the dad they loved and lost and painting their dad into this legend to be proud of.

Eddie mostly stopped pulling cons himself when the boys moved in with him. Its not that he couldn’t, they were old enough they didn’t need him constantly hovering, but he couldn’t shake the thought that if something went wrong there wouldn’t be anyone else to take them in, and if he’s honest with himself he’d always preferred the planning over the executing anyway. He still pulled the occasional score, he was just more selective in which ones he took on himself. He’d always been a planner, the mastermind behind the scenes, and it wasn’t uncommon for people to come to him to help hook them up with a crew or job. But before Seth and Richie, it was a part time gig, most of his plans made for him and his over offering them to others for a cut of the profit. The boys’ arrival changed that, although they never did learn how they were the turning point for him going into semi-retirement.

Seth was sort of desperate to prove himself worthy of being taken in by Eddie, (which had its own ups and downs) but Richie was fairly distant when they first moved in, not convinced that Uncle Eddie wasn’t just another version of their dad. It was Uncle Eddie that first started calling Richie a genius (Seth always said Richie was smart, but that was different, because Seth was his brother and they looked out for each other and sometimes they didn’t see the other clearly), who took in his ticks and eccentricities in stride and still praised his “big ass brain.” He found problems for Richie to solve to stave off boredom, and got him a library card and bought him books on whatever obscure topics caught his attention. He’ll never know it, but in his own small way Uncle Eddie undid so much of the damage Ray left behind, allowing Richie to open up and connect with people other than Seth.

Seth and Sonja talk in the hotel room after he catches her and Kate outside.

“You have a plan for after this?” she asks as he closes the door, perching on the edge of one of the beds (Kate’s bed) and leaning back on one hand.

“I-” he stops, because he doesn’t have an answer. Hadn’t really thought past each moment of next. “Something like that, yeah,” he answers finally on a sigh.

“You’re going to need one,” she says plainly, tilting her head and studying him in a way that doesn’t feel invasive, like she can peel back a layer of his skin and get a glimpse of what lies beneath. Not like Richie, not like Kate.  

“You sound like you’ve done this before,” he says, looking away.

“Something like that, yeah,” she echoes, even though it wasn’t a question. Not really. “Enough to know that someone doesn’t get to where you were without a reason. Want to know my guess?”

“Enlighten me.”

“I think it’s about what happened between you and your brother."

The familiar anger flares up, mixing and masking that deep well of pain that likes to catch him off guard. The anger is easier, clenching his jaw and stealing his words, but not his breath. Doesn’t carve its way through his chest and twist his stomach.

“You wanna talk about it?”

“We split,” he all but snaps out.  

“Never thought I’d see the day,” she says, not noticing or ignoring his reaction. “When the infamous Gecko Brothers would be no more.”

“Is there a point to this line of questioning?”

She rolls her eyes, but lets it go, allowing the silence to stretch and twist between them for a short moment.

“So,” she beings carefully, “I met your little friend.”  

For a split second, Seth pictures the gunman, heart pounding in remembered fear renewing itself.  

“You mean Kate?” he clarifies, relief warm in chest as his brain catches up with the facts.  

“Yeah. Kate.” She says the name with a hard edge, nearly clipping the first syllable. Seth frowns, flashes of Kate’s crossed arms and hard jaw outside the door playing through his memory. “After the way you talked about her, I was expecting someone... older.” She says the words almost carefully, pushing forward until she rests her elbows on her knees, watching him steadily.

“Oh?” His arms cross over his chest, body going loose and tense all at once.  

“I thought you were fucking her,” she says bluntly.  

He stares, waiting a too long beat before saying blandly, “That’d be illegal.”

Fanfic Writer Appreciation (and a little self love)

Sooooo, as talked about I wanted to do a little promo. I may not always be my favorite writer, but I try to be one of my cheerleaders. And well, if you’re here you obviously have some interest in what I’m up to.

SO! Here’s a list of my currently-published WIPs and some info about them, in the order that I’ve updated them, most recent to oldest.

Dog Whistle (Ao3 || FFN) - started off as a prompt from @snackarey​ when I reblogged some Soulmate AUs. This one was a prompt for soulmates (Zack/Kunsel) who felt what each other felt - like pain. Needless to say, this went into a canon divergent AU where Kunsel felt some of what Zack was going through when Hojo got a hold of him after Nibelheim. And saved him, setting off an ever-increasing list of revolutionary consequences. It’s nearly 58K, and though I’m a little stuck I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Dewprism: Journey to the [Relic] (Ao3 || FFN) - this actually has a lot more written than I’ve posted, I just got a little frustrated because well... the fandom is teeny tiny and there’s no real feedback. But! It’s an interesting piece. It’s a semi-novelization where I’m taking the old PS1 Classic from Squaresoft, Threads of Fate/Dewprism and merging the two storylines. Basically... you can’t play the game anymore unless you got it from the PSN for your PSP or... PS2, I think? Or emulate it, of course, you can do that. And I wanted to bring the experience to more people, because it’s got such a great story.

It’s Not a Game (Ao3 || FFN) - this is my Avengers/FF7 crossover, and funny story, it was actually born out of a comment back on my old Genesis RP blog about how Genesis would totally be Tony Stark’s favorite character if he played Crisis Core. It’s turned into a full blown fixit I have a type and I actually have like, 90% of the next chapter done, it just doesn’t feel quite right so I haven’t posted it. And am, of course, stuck. There’s a case of choice paralysis here; the premise is that, in the MCU, FF7 is a series like it is in our world, and Tony is a fan. So he goes to make a simulation to do a self-insert... only he somehow transports himself (and Bruce) to a dimension where it’s real. A “Stark-insert” someone called it; and it does use a lot of “Self-Insert” tropes, actually. There’s just so many ways it could go that I’m stuck on choosing exactly how to progress here.

Party of Five (Ao3 || FFN) - the MMO AU! This was actually originally a prompt @up-sideand-down​ got, that I got permission to take off with. It’s a modern AU AGSZC where they meet online playing this MMO I made up that’s based off of FF7 and modeled after a mashup of like, me studying WoW and my experiences playing SWTOR. I’ve actually got some ideas of where it’s going, I just got too caught up in technicalities and need to reroute it back to the relationships going on.

Welcome to FF7 (series link, Ao3) - this is me hashing out basically what I think went down pre-games. Most of it is headcanon, I cannot stress that enough. It’s based off of the little we know, of course, but there’s just so much we don’t that it’s mostly headcanon. Tons of OCs. It’s a whole series, and they overlap - different sections that follow different departments, mostly. The base story is Welcome to ShinRa (Ao3 || FFN) and that follows the man who will become President Shinra from back when they first discover mako energy. I’ve also got Welcome to the Science Department (Ao3 || FFN) which starts off with college students Gast and Grimoire and how they get drawn into the beginnings of what becomes ShinRa Electric.

And last but not least, honorable mention to Times of Change (Ao3) - this was actually a piece inspired by @deadcatwithaflamethrower‘s Re-Entry series. I desperately need to reread that before I can hope to continue this, but... one day. One day.... I don’t suggest reading it right now, my headcanons have changed and it needs an overhaul. But you’ll see eventually.

Compilation of FF7

The Snowball Effect (Ao3 || FFN) ... sequel? continuation? - as one of the gift exchange presents I’ve just done this past month, it is definitely standalone as is, but if I ever figure out where I want to take it, I’ll continue that one. It was just far too much fun.

The Price of Freedom - the sequel to To Be Human, which... I’m looking forward to, but I really burnt myself out on TBH so it’s going to be longer than anticipated before I approach this one. TBH definitely stands on its own, but there were some loose ends left to tie up, so we’ll see how that goes. And when it goes, when I’m ready to approach that again. TBH needs some editing, too... lots of work there.

The Unnamed Pokemon/FF7 crossover that I’ve talked about for... a couple years now (yikes) but now actually have a plot for. It’s very interesting to me, putting Pokemon on Gaia, and seeing how that changes everything. Because like, they’d have presumably used Mew’s DNA since there’s no Jenova (I can’t see them using Deoxys, which would be the closer parallel) and since there’s no Chaos, Grimoire is still alive. Which means no extra Drama between Lucrecia and Vincent - and really, there shouldn’t be the stress between Vincent and Hojo over her being sick because Mew would theoretically be much more compatible with humans than Jenova was.

What I’m saying is Seph has three parents and at least one set of grandparents and a much more stable Sephiroth (and Genesis and Angeal, thanks to Lucrecia teaming up with Gillian) leads to some very interesting changes. Like deciding they don’t want to fight the Wutai war anymore. >_>

Hold My Flower - a timetravel fic featuring our one and only flowergirl, who has had enough of people messing up her planet and refuses to just... let it die. She is, unquestionably, a force of nature. No fragile flower to be found here, this is the gal you see in the OG who threatened a mob boss and meant it. Heaven help anyone who gets in her way. She’s going to save the world. Possibly in a Turk Suit, don’t look at me.

The Long Game - Reeve goes back in time, and holy crap this one is a monster I am truly intimidated by so it’s gonna take a while for me to get going on that. XD But basically, similar premise to the above - the world isn’t healing and someone has to do something, so Reeve is nominated due to his position in ShinRa and potential to... he’d say “influence” but let’s call a spade a spade - manipulate people and events to a more favorable outcome.

A third BIT fic is one that I started writing with my friend @askshivanulegacy back in... damn, somewhere between 2011-2013, before we switched to writing SWTOR fic together. It’s one where Zack is sent back in time, and the differences in him post-Hojo change things even before he can start deliberately changing anything. But I got permission to take and remake that, so I intend to, one day. It was Good Stuff. And you can never have too much timetravel.

Dragon Ball Z

So, this is an oooooold fandom of mine - the first fanfics I ever wrote (under a different name, no I’m not telling XD it was ten years ago) were for DBZ, and definitely the first ones I ever read, back in the days of dial up. And I read a couple interesting takes on Chichi/Vegeta fic... and I was talking with @vorpalgirl about it and said I’d love to try my hand at something with that one day. I think they have the potential to be a really great pair (don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the canon pairings but those two have a lot of potential) so... yeah someday I might dip my toes back into Z. It’s on the wishlist, as well as reviving and cleaning up an old unfinished work of mine. Someday~

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Seven Years Lost - this one I’ve been debating a long time, and even did a little on! It’s basically how I rationalize what happens when Link pulls the Master Sword out and - well, spoilers but it’s a really old game so - when he comes out as a teenager and is immediately able to handle a nearly-adult body. It involves a dreamscape scenario where he communicates with his past incarnations and learns from them, and from sharing dreams with Zelda due to their bond.

Sailor Moon (manga/Crystal based)

Second Chances - I read a lot of SM fanfic back in the day, and my favorite ones were... more real? Like, there were more consequences to these 14 year old kids out there fighting for their lives and sometimes losing them. I’d like to tell a story through Minako/Venus’ eyes primarily, covering what that’s like, and then I also just really want a happy ending for the senshi/shittenou? So... yay canon divergence, lol. You guys know the deal by now. XD

Star Wars: Legends Era

United We Stand - SWTOR fanfic, baby! Basically, I’m just dying to see the eight classes cross over each other, and I will bend canon to do it. For anyone that’s played the original class story lines, there is some cross over but believe me when I say there were huge opportunities that were let drop by nature of the game. Just with the two Jedi stories alone... but that’s #spoilers for a not-as-old game so I’ll leave that be and only elaborate if asked.

hi liz! if you're still doing the 500 words or less fanfic post i'd like your commentary on one of my favorite fics from you, "i told the moon to never let me go" chapter 5: "As new stars explode behind his eyelids, he thinks the world has never known a love like the riot of feeling in his heart" or "He threads it onto the second pair of dog tags and stuffs them into his pocket. Closing his eyes, Shiro presses his lips to where the tags join onto the chain, eyes shut, and says a quiet prayer."

that first quote is actually one of my favorites from that fic partly because of the fact that i’m the biggest sucker for space imagery but also because i think it sort of gestures at one of the big things shiro is struggling with throughout this fic (and into the nexttttt omg) which is how his relationship with keith is going to translate once he’s up in space. they’re very tactile, which is why i think this line makes sense at the end of a sex scene (the “riot of feeling” part was originally somewhere else but i don’t remember where now). they’re handsy, they share a bed most nights, they have a lot of sex, they rest their knees together at meals--proximity is important to them. and i think this is one of the moments where leaving for space starts to feel real for shiro in a way he doesn’t quite know how to synthesize with that relationship with keith and makes clear the fact that love isn’t just one emotions, it’s dozens upon dozens all fit together like when you shine a rainbow back through a prism and it becomes white light again

gosh and for this second quote there is a really really long spiel i could give about my thoughts on religion for all the vld characters but basically i headcanon shiro as a semi-practicing buddhist (you could call him “spiritual but not religious” but then i would have to cry while clutching my half of a master’s in religious studies)--in this fic, he spent the first several years of his life living with his grandparents in japan, and they raised him with that practice. shiro actually prays 4 times in this fic! now i don’t imagine he prays every day or even regularly, but i like to think that it sits there in the back of his mind and on the days when he’s feeling especially lost or anxious he reaches to it and pulls strength from it. in this scene he’s considering deeply the implications of what it means to take the kerberos mission, the risk factors involved, and the very real possibility of death, all of which are completely out  of his control, and shiro mitigates some of his fear by giving it over. also, i firmly believe that we should write about religion more in fic (not just like....kinky stuff lmaoooo) because frankly it’s the kind of thing that plays a HUGE role in so many people’s lives and i think it’s interesting to explore the dynamic between characters in religion through modes that don’t just fall into tropes like “catholic schoolgirl no longer catholic” (this is a personal callout!). but i keep it subtle. mostly.

anyway this could have been funny but you picked some of my favorite & most emotional lines and i’m still kind of a wreck over this fic as i gently nudge the sequel into existence

SLBP lords modern college au headcanons

I made a shit post about what if the lords were buddies at college and not trying to kill each other over divine rule.

Sorry there’s no MC here cause I wanted to focus on the brotherhoods…but you can insert her in and run with it.

Halfway through, it occurred to me this is centered around yasu’s assholeness and yukkin’s misery.

Inspired by all those slbp modern au headcanons going around on tumblr.

Ieyasu:

studying medicine? god save the people pharmacology? bioscience? criminal profiling? because evil understands evil criminology consultant?? more like consultancy for criminals

campus Mr White but he works alone bitch/weed lord, kojuro is his no.1 loyal customer.

to mitsubun’s disgust, he’s also an avid reader……of Nietzsche, Dostoyevsky, Machiavelli…so also, edge lord.

has his own room cause no one dares to room with him he’s rich and his granddaddy tadatsugu’s the faculty dean

helps???out in the school infirmary sometimes. yukkin is a regular due to sports injuries. he blackmails yukkin to buy daifuku

Mitsunari:

literature? teaching??

one time he put out a sign saying he’s looking for a roomie and yasu applied. that day is never spoken of in campus. mitsuhide comes by and is so overly compensating and considerate mitsubun has to agree. they bond over their senpais and live happily ever after. hide says its fate and yasu refers to them as thing 1 and thing 2.

he and mitsuhide are usually seen at the library together. the two nerds.

Hideyoshi:

PR? international relations? psychology??

most loved dorm RA, fav TA.

works at the neighborhood café with masa. they are hella good at baking.

Yasu keeps threatening bribing people to buy the ichigo daifuku for him.

great at food porn photography. he and masa are in charge of the café instagram.

helps out the school counseling office. one time he gave yasu and mitsubun punishment for school property damage by making them babysit at a childcare centre.

got asked to do nude modeling for the art students cause have you seen his bod

Inuchiyo:

sports science? vet??

resident dog sitter/walker, especially for shingen. one time for nobu and one time as a cat caretaker for mitsuhide.

always challenging hideyoshi to an arm wrestling competition ever since he lost.

he and yukkin are gym buddies

Nobunaga:

holds the biggest, best parties where everyone gets piss-drunk.

food taster for hideyoshi because hideyoshi cannot trust mitsubun to give honest objective feedback

probably head of student council and holds all sorts of crazy events when he gets bored.

also head news editor and runs the sauciest, juiciest articles.

Mitsuhide:

another literature nut? law? journalism?

his roomie used to be kojuro until he could no longer stand the mountain of trash semi-important documents on kojuro’s side of the room. their room smelled like weed, books and bad poetry

works for the school newspaper and is forced by nobu to sneakily take photos of people. ends up asking saizo for help

Yukimura:

sports science? maybe he’s aiming for the national soccer team or some Olympic sport.

gets to knows shigezane when yukkin sleeps over one night after a Halloween party gone wrong.

gets introduced to masa whom he had always thought of as standoffish, until he realizes the guy’s as big a cinnamon roll as himself. they become bros afterwards

he and shigezane secretly feed this rabbit kept for dissection class and smuggle it out one night

Saizo:

idk languages? security management for his intel spy training? maybe he’s just an average guy studying creative writing

secret online smut writer with kojuro. they met at nanowrimo. hey he gets paid for it ok.

mitsuhide gets most of his news sources from saizo.

probably earns extra income as a phone sex worker. rooms with yukkin, so when he does his job, yukkin stammers a lot and plugs in his earphones or seeks shelter with shigezane. until he stumbles upon his secret porn stash

Shingen:

business?

rooms with inuchiyo and has a huge black dog (kurokumo) which he leaves with inuchiyo to take care of when he’s not around.

friends with Nobu cause their dads are old business rivals

saizo references him for his fics

Kenshin:

Fine arts? Museum hoarding curating??

Yasu says he should get a My Strange Addiction/Hoarders series starring himself

really good at ikebana. he and yasu each have their own sections in the community garden. sometimes they trade weeding/gardening tips

tadakatsu thinks he’s a fellow masochist in-between yasu’s insults and kanetsugu’s homicidal scolding

Masamune:

idk business? culinary arts?

hideyoshi’s baker partner. yukkin’s his fav customer and he always saves him a donut. though sometimes he wonders why the guy stammers so terribly when ordering daifuku

meets inuchiyo who’s out walking the dogs during his morning jog. he then helps take care of the animals when inuchiyo is busy. Yukkin and shigezane join them sometimes.

the Date and Kai boys like to hang out at his room ever since the porn incident with shigezane and kojuro’s room is just a no-go zone.

gets teased together with yukkin a lot and they both look at each other helplessly wondering why.

Kojuro:

shigezane gets suspicious of kojuro’s meetings with yasu, stalks him and worries for his future.

rooms with kenshin, who appreciates the beauty of his poetry and neither of them minds the mess treasures in their room.

saizo interviews him when writing daddy kink

Also, sorry I tried my best but I couldn’t think up more for some of the characters and I haven’t been on everyone’s routes yet.
