the Lockwood & Co tag on twitter today is about Arif, so I figured I would share a snippet from a fic I started a while back!
(I’ll post more things soon, including a Patron Saint chapter that’s in progress- it’s just that on top of everything else we just found out our landlord is selling our house and we have to move, which is…a lot! I’m big stressed! but I’m trying to write!)

The bell over the door jangled merrily as it opened and a light breeze ruffled the “grand opening” banner hanging overhead. “Hello, welcome!” he called from behind the register.
A little girl zipped ahead of her family and made a beeline for the candy display. “Ooh, Daddy, look!” she chirped, gazing at the jars of lollipops and taffy.
Her father held the door open as he ushered his wife inside. “Just a second, Jessa,” he laughed. “Wait for us to catch up.”
“Oh, it’s lovely in here,” the wife said. She had a blue and white striped baby sling crossed over her chest and she absently patted her baby’s back as she looked around. “Imagine, just a few months ago this was a taxidermist’s shop. This is…this is a drastic improvement.”
“Fewer things staring at you from the window,” her husband agreed.
He grinned. “Glad to hear it,” he said. He held out his hand. “I’m Arif, nice to meet you.”
“Donald Lockwood,” the young man said, shaking his hand firmly. He was in his thirties, tall and thin, and a pair of silver glasses perched on his nose. “This is my wife, Celia, and our daughter-”
The little girl ran over to them. “Hello!” she said, holding onto the edge of the counter and raising herself up on her tiptoes to be seen. “I’m Jessica Lockwood, I’m six years old, my favorite color is pink. What’s your favorite color?”
Arif blinked. “Um…green, I suppose,” he said. “That’s not a question I’m asked often.” He grinned. “But I could have guessed your favorite color.”
Jessica beamed at him. She was dressed in a pink romper and a pink floral shirt, with pink socks and a pink ribbon tied in her dark hair. “I’m awfully fond of pink,” she said. “My bicycle is pink, I rode my bicycle all the way here.”
“We live a few blocks over on Portland Row,” Donald explained. “It was a nice evening and we thought we’d take a walk before curfew.” He ran his hand lightly over Jessica’s hair. “Especially since this one has been so patient waiting for us to take her out on her bike.”
“We’ve been busy because we have a baby now!” Jessica said. She ran over to her mother, who was wandering around the shop looking at the shelves. “Mummy?”
“What, my darling?”
“I want to show Mr. Arif our baby!”
Celia Lockwood laughed and walked over to the counter. She was shorter than her husband but still rather tall and willowy; her long dark hair was tied in a loose braid down her back and her dark brown eyes were identical to her daughter’s. “Sorry, I got a bit distracted,” she said. She drew the edge of the wrap back. “Here he is, although I’m afraid he’s fast asleep right now.”
“That’s Ani,” Jessica informed him.
“It’s Anthony, actually, but we didn’t factor in a six year old’s inability to pronounce that name properly when we made that decision,” Donald said with a proud smile.
“Well, hello, Anthony,” Arif said to the sleeping baby. “How old is he?”
“Three months,” Celia said proudly. She ran her fingertips lightly over the soft dusting of dark hair on the baby’s head. “It’s been a bit of an adjustment getting used to having two children in the house, but Jessica’s been an angel.”
Arif crossed his arms and leaned on the counter. “Oh, so you’ve been a very good big sister?” he asked Jessica. She nodded solemnly. “Well, very good big sisters deserve treats.”
He went over to the bakery caseline and took out a vanilla cupcake topped in pink strawberry frosting. Jessica’s eyes went owlishly round. “Oh!” she said. “Thank you!”
Donald picked her up and set her on his hip so she could see better. “That looks like it was made for you,” he laughed. He kissed her cheek, then wrapped his arm around Celia’s waist. “Here, you pick out something too, dearest.”
“Ooh, there’s too many options,” Celia said. “Everything looks so good. Do you make everything yourself, Arif?”
“My wife and I do, yes,” he said. “We’ve been trying to open a shop of our own for years.”
“Well, I have a feeling we’ll be giving you a lot of business,” Celia said.
She ended up choosing a slab of shortbread glazed with caramel and Donald picked a slice of German chocolate cake, and Arif packaged everything up as neatly as he could. “Mummy, what about the baby?” Jessica said. “He needs something too.”
“Not yet, darling, he’s still too little,” Celia said. “He needs to be a bit older.”
Arif rang them up for the cake and the shortbread, but he stopped Donald’s arguments before he could get started. “The cupcake is on me,” he said, waving his hand dismissively. “Don’t worry about it.”
Nevertheless Arif caught Donald dropping several bills into the tip jar on the counter before he picked up the box, much more than the cost of the cupcake, but even if he hadn’t it was worth it to hear Jessica chattering happily to her parents about how excited she was. Through the window he could see her clambering onto her little pink bicycle; her parents followed behind her hand-in-hand, Donald holding the bakery box and Celia patting her sleeping son’s back.
“Nice family,” Arif said aloud to himself as he cleaned imaginary crumbs off his brand new countertop. “Very nice family, hope I see them again soon.”

so nathan and his post!prison (because it's prison, not jail, i just like the term jailbird a lot) thus also his in-prison / post LIS 1 verse info:
this is nathan's only verse that offers any form of "redemption".
i'll break it down in parts easily:
this follows the SAVE THE BAY ie chloe dies route for LIS.
kate marsh testified against nathan, as well as mark. nathan pleaded guilty regardless, he cracked fast under the pressure, revealed everything, and confessed ... but her testimony was also partially a victim impact statement in regards to nathan. mark was the one that likely refused to plead guilty.
a few other girls came forward against nathan, too. when girls were revealed / reached out to about their binders in the dark room, they likely might have come forward, perhaps anonymously, perhaps not. there are lot of victims here ... some that don't even know they're victims / some they might have suspected.
nathan was charged for (in vague terms, not like specific charges): drug possession, drug distribution, sexual assault, aggravated assault, charged with mark in the murder of rachel amber, charged in the assault of kate marsh, distributing the video of kate marsh being drugged, and the sole murder of chloe price along with a few other minor charges there were dropped eventually. what he actually went to prison for was the murder of rachel amber and the murders of chloe price, as well as the assault of kate marsh. a lot of the other charges were dropped because "those are the big ones" ie the ones they can really nail him on. justice systems are weird, but everything nathan did is known. even if his "time served" isn't quite for all of his crimes, his crimes are known to the public.
nathan takes less heat for the dark room photos because mark is taking the brunt of that. he took the pictures, and he was selling them in the dark market. they have their own cases against them while also being charged in somewhat tandem.
mark is responsible for like kidnapping, drugging, assault, the production of those photos, etc. he's not innocent here. their charges are just different. but when it comes down to it: mark didn't kill rachel, he didn't kill chloe, so 'murder' (while yes, papers say he was arrested for various things including that) is not quite accurate to his charges. also! the amount of time mark has been doing this? they know he’s got a history of some sort, but pinning it down? hard. maybe sean talked? maybe not.
nathan spends the next (roughly) decade in prison. he is mostly isolated or in solitary confinement due to the nature of his crimes / he is smaller than other inmates / he is often targeted for violence. he's almost been killed twice. nathan also still has a lot of meltdowns at first, but these mellow out as he is given a new dose of meds, is often somewhat sedated, and has started pursuing drawing over photography. he has always been very artistic. he also writes a lot; poems, unsent letters, stories, dreams he's had, etc. he journals a lot. that's a big LIS motif. he writes his journal to a couple of people, but mostly to kate. sometimes victoria. sometimes his dad. sometimes mark.
he has few visitors. his mother comes. his sister writes, but very infrequently. kate (ottersden) comes to see him the most, but that isn't right away. additionally, judith does have involvement in nathan's post!prison verse in our dynamic, so that does carry over.
but by default, kate is the reason nathan even seeks out redemption at all, planning to just "rot there" until she intervenes. over the next ten years, more likely eight, i think it takes her time to reach out, first through letter, then call, then after a year finally in person, so more ... seven to six years of them actually meeting face-to-face. while kate was influential in putting nathan away, she becomes influential in his release.
nathan leaves prison. he goes to a halfway house in the area / sometimes near portland / eventually goes to the gresham area of oregon, which is just outside of portland. it's somewhat lower income, so he can afford it as he starts to work odd jobs around division street, powell blvd, and other locations. dishwasher, occasional (not legal) bartender, even doing some "semi-legal" cannabis trimming (he cannot get a license for the industry, but the med and street scene are still big, but rec cannabis is also huge in oregon). lots of different things.
when he moves into his own place, it is furnished a lot from kate and the good will. after settling in, roughly two weeks in, he receives an anonymous package containing a digital camera and small tripod, as well as a strap, and other small tools. he knows this is from his father. he puts it away in his closet. it haunts him. he can't throw it away, but he can't show anyone. especially not kate, who has started to come over recently.
in kate coming over: doors unlocked, windows open, no drinks or food provided by him, curtains revealed, etc. this begins to ease up as she trusts him more.
he wants to potentailly go to mt. hood community college or clackamas community college. he lives a bit near the former.
he walks everywhere. he can't afford a car. he also uses the bus system combined with the MAX (our train basically), as well as the street cars. he also begins to bike. biking is huge in oregon, especially portland. it has its own "culture", but he just bikes around to get places. sometimes he goes on trails.
nathan looks a bit different now: darker hair and eyes, pallid complexion, still thin but a bit more filled out, and he's almost thirty now / is just now thirty. he was always a year above kate and max. he goes by nate socially.
nathan runs a lot. he should have pursued track. he doesn't watch sports anymore. he still has a lot of the same interests, but he keeps that shit to himself. his movie collection is growing again. he struggles with food sometimes — he’s a slow learner … but he learns.
he's off the drugs and alcohol. he's off everything but his meds, though he still struggles with temptation. but he's been sober for so long, out of the "prison culture" (because no one trusted him to give him anything), and while drugs are easily accessible in oregon, nathan is trying to be on the straight and narrow. he's on parole, he gets tested, he cannot fuck up.
after he's off parole? he might smoke weed. not sure yet.
does he visit mark? ... he's not allowed to. but he wants to? does he want to? he doesn't know.
has he spoken to his father? ... no. nathan has a new number. he's on kate's phone plan actually.
does he see his mother? ... unsure. he wants to. but he is afraid to see her out of prison. prison protected them. this is the world again, and his father runs the world as they know it.
what if mark gets out, too? nate is fucked.

What are possible ways of alleviating food insecurity in Cincinnati, and UC's campus?
The United States has been lucky enough to have a steadily decreasing rate of food insecurity in urban areas in the past ten years. However, this does not mean that the problem should be ignored, or that it will resolve itself. Food insecurity is an immensely difficult problem to solve, involving the collective time, effort, and funds of thousands of people. The Future Planners of America have outlined three ways that food insecurity can be better handled for the greater Cincinnati area and the University of Cincinnati’s campus: Adaptive Reuse, Government Funding, and Food Trucks. 
Adaptive Reuse
When any social issue arises, an important area to search for solutions is where places are underutilized. This is the main premise of adaptive reuse: redeveloping, or ‘recycling’ facilities in order to adapt to the changing needs of society. One excellent example of this from a food insecurity perspective comes from students at the University of Washington St. Louis, who won a global design competition for their proposal to transform underutilized post office location into food distribution centers in underserved areas. The United States Post Office (USPS) has been slowly outperformed by other private delivery services like Amazon, UPS, and FedEx for the past few years, and thousands of their locations have been surveyed as ripe for redevelopment. The UWSTL students’ models, the redeveloped post office facilities would be transformed into fresh food warehouses, which eases the strain on other private food pantries. The USPS trucks could also be used as a public food delivery service, which could not only increase accessibility for the elderly and disabled, but reinvigorate the USPS through a shifting business model.

Government Initiatives 
The first thing that comes to most people’s minds when considering government involvement in food insecurity is probably SNAP, the federal Food Stamp program. This is the obvious and correct venue through which change can be initiated, but simply increasing funding is not the correct solution. A study by the American Enterprise Institute reveals that increased funding of the federal SNAP program has a very minimal effect on the levels of food insecurity in the US; food insecurity trends downwards regardless of how much or how little money is spent on SNAP. This is primarily because food insecurity is not a matter of hunger, but a matter of proper nutrition: most places in America designated as “food deserts” are full of fast food restaurants. The proper government initiative to decrease food insecurity is by increasing the places that people can use their food stamps. An excellent example is CalFresh, California’s state SNAP program. CalFresh expands the food-buying power of underserved residents to any grocery stores, including an abundance of certified farmer’s markets. They also have a program through which elderly and disabled residents can receive fresh food from restaurants for free.

Food Trucks
Food trucks are an excellent and innovative solution to ending food insecurity because they provide a mobility aspect to the solutions: food trucks are easy to move anywhere and temporarily serve citizens with fresh food, while building or redeveloping buildings to store and sell fresh food can be very time-intensive. One incredibly interesting example of using food trucks to solve food insecurity comes from the school system of Middletown, Ohio. In order to keep their students from suffering from food insecurity while school is not in session is by adopting a special fleet of trucks to drive to kid’s houses and serve them with fresh food for little to no cost. Food trucks also make for an innovative third space for residents to build a strong community centered around mitigating food insecurity. In Portland, Park the Carts is a weekly event that brings fleets of food trucks to a community center and not only gives residents fresh foods, but gives them a variety of options and a stronger sense of community.

How the media views the housing crisis
There are many factors that play into the cause of the Portland Housing Crisis. The majority of news articles I come across highlight lack of new construction and affordable housing. For instance, KGW8 news highlights how Multnomah County has some of the lowest rental vacancy rental rates, but highest rental prices. Whereas other news articles, like the Willamette Week, claim the scarce housing is caused by millennials wanting to settle down and buy homes. They seemed surprised that people in their 30s-40s want to settle down and buy a house rather than live out the rest of their lives renting an apartment. 
I think it’s safe to say this issue is way deeper than millennials choosing to settle down. In fact, I feel as humans it’s expected for us all to want to settle down and own a home of our own one day. That is what the propaganda of the American dream sells to its citizens after all. Whether the population is growing or not, new construction for affordable housing is not popping up fast enough. The housing that is available is only available to those in a certain tax bracket, and extremely low income households are left paying over 50% of their income on rent.
