Publishing has always been a fucking nightmare, but now it’s a layer of hell. It’s not enough that writers be good at what they do. Writers have to maintain an active social media presence and cultivate a following. Be available.
They have to be conventionally attractive enough to look good enough to see on a screen, aesthetically pleasing, kind, funny, up-to-date on trends, socially aware but not so controversial that they turn off a brand from California from slapping their discount code on a video promoting a book.
They have to do all of this with no media training, with little help from the companies that are supposed to be doing this for them.
Of course, a lot of this isn't possible for say, the 40-something mother of two who teaches English at a school and writes on the side. She’s boxed out of an already complex industry that already has enough walls.
On some level, I think authors have always marketed themselves a little, but we’ve reached such a crazy point where we’re demanding the author become the influencer. Accessibility in publishing has narrowed from an inch to a sliver. And that inch was hard enough to get in as is.
#This is about traditional publishing but there’s pretty privilege and ageism in self publishing too#I can’t think of the last time I saw an up and coming author recording videos who was over thirty#And frankly that’s a shame#It could be that I’m not looking hard enough#but it’s more likely that algorithms are trained the way they are#truly I don’t think they should have to do any of that at all#And forgive me but (and I know it’s rich because I’m an artist on a platform) but art shouldn’t be at the mercy of an algorithm#Now there’s also something to be said about self publishing becoming easier and easier to achieve success in#And doors opening because of influencer status is real and makes publishing wider in a way#But that doesn’t mean it’s accessible#I’m not gonna plaster my health issues over the wall but that life is certainly not accessible to me!#are you healthy enough to write and make sure people on social media still want to like your stuff#are you mentally well enough to be your own pr#I’m sure people who have studied this have more to say and have said it better but this is what I’ve observed#writing#publishing#publishing industry

This is why I never show people IRL that I write. I don't like to talk about it. But I had my notebook out and person (keeping it vague here lol) saw and asked me what I was doing and I awkwardly went "I'm writing a novel" and then they launch into how "you know you can publish that right?? It's easy these days" (no it isn't)
And I'm just sitting there going "yeah, I know 😐"
"you can get paid for it"
"yeah I know 😐"
#LEAVE ME ALONE#writing#writers community#writeblr#writer#writers#novel writing#writerscommunity#writers on tumblr#non-writers don't seem to realize how much work and effort there is into writing a book. even when you go the self publishing route. and#like?? im not guarenteed fame and success lol. i feel like so many people in my life overestimate me because they simply just dont know#anything about writing. im very quiet irl about how much i struggle with my writing.#plus... why why does every hobby have to be instantly monetized?? why?? why can't i just enjoy it??

long story short: My short stories aren't selling as consistently as I hoped they would, and with publishing and wedding costs on the horizon, I'm hoping memberships will be a more effective way of making income, so I'm curious to see what people are most interested in seeing!
Tagging @abalonetea because I know you do patreon and that's similar so I'm curious to see what's worked for you in the past?
#etta rambles#other people's writing#writeblr#to be clear I have a day job so I can make my rent and regular expenses and bills#but unless my writing starts paying for itself I might not be able to publish runaways next year#or I run a successful kickstarter#I work so hard on my blog and youtube and everything and try to give so much to community and it's not paying off like I hoped it would#but I don't have any more time left to give#so I've got to get more annoying about self promotion I guess#etta grumbles about running a business in the tags

Fun facts about Maya’s new book!!
She doesn’t have a publishing deal (yet?)
However do you know this Sada? You might ask. Well it is quite simple dears. First: she didn’t list any publisher, which is a difference from how -say - Lottie announced her new book.
There is also nothing that comes up when you search for Maya or the book, and there’s nothing in any trade magazines about her book being picked up.
On top of that, her illustrator? He only made his IG account 6 hours ago. He is in fact a real artist but the account she tagged is brand new.
Just some fun facts 🤗
#listen I’m not saying that she - herself - intentionally dropped this today#but there is no publisher#and she’s got no release date#so#draw your own conclusions#that said self-publishing on Amazon is 100% valid#I in fact just got my first royalty payment from an ebook I put up back in 2019#a whole FIVE CENTS#hopefully Maya will be just as successful 🤗

i have such a love/hate relationship with writing forums like on one hand they can be extremely helpful to people but i always end up feeling that on the other hand 85% of questions asked would be better served by just...picking up a book and reading it.
"How do i do *insert craft question here*". Hmmm maybe see how your favorite authors are doing it. maybe see how popular authors are doing it, maybe see how "bad" writing does it, maybe see how "good" writing does it. maybe you need to read.
#writeblr#writers on tumblr#idk i feel like half these kids don't want to pick up a book they just want to be self published or have their own tv show lmao#like read. you have to READ. to learn to be inspired to grow#theres no way around it#but it's not a burden on most successful writers to do this bc shocker we genuinely like to read narrative works#or even....non narrative works#how many times (its every time) i'm reading a book i love and i come across beautifully executed writing and my brain just goes:#'jot that down jot that down!'#got to be one of my favorite parts#but sadly also 52% of us adults can't read higher than a sixth grade level and i do think this affects a LOT

I think I got the summary for Ember Warrior hashed out! Figured I'd post it here really quick to get a little feedback on it. I'm curious as to if it's interest-grabbing, and/or if there are any confusing sentences in there.
War has come for Rhimn. The unified feyrie courts strike back against the knights of the Irongardhe, casting the dark-winged shadow of Lady Death over Gadhi.
While Crislie wrestles with unexpected heritage and razes the frontlines of open warfare, her friends navigate the political intrigue of their Heraldry. As Meparik sets off on a diplomatic mission to convince the Ulluan Matrius to lend her aid, Navaeli parleys with the feyrie courts on behalf of General Morekai, hoping that he may hold the key to the cage of her Heraldry.
But allies may be more difficult to make than outright enemies. When Ullua is reluctant to make war with its neighbor, and the courtleaders and generals have agendas of their own, the situation might not be as straightforward as putting an ax through a foe . . .
And it’s far too easy for foes to pose as friends.
As the Ashen Army advances, the political imperatives of everyone’s roles threaten to devour them — but faltering could cost the lives and freedom of the fey of Rhimn.
#sometimes i wonder if the summaries are too melodramatic#but! it's dark political fantasy that's just how the situation is#posting here partially because i got some good help on revising the previous two summaries#but i'm a little worried that i'm exhausting the lovely folks who were helping me by having three of these things to go through#sometimes i feel . . . i dunno#kind of stuck between the chill “write whatever whenever and don't give a fuck about success” part of writeblr#and the part that's like “PUBLISHING PUBLISHING I AM GOING TO BECOME A PUBLISHED NAME WRITER”#i am publishing! but it's for fun! do not let me fool you into thinking I Am Intimidating! please please please#i wanna keep hanging out with the chill writers not the hashtag grind guys#sorry about the times where i'm high-energy about getting stuff done and move a little fast; i'm just very enthused about My Thing#and i want to do it nice for the few folks who like it#it doesn't help that my brain rn keeps hitting me over the head with the fear that everything i write is secretly Problematic and Evil#and that i'm not self-aware enough to spot how#but like. not a new fear. I'll get over it! <3

really salty about the way that i physically cannot afford to hire an editor for my book to self-publish and i’m just gonna have to accept that because I can’t spend between $500 and $1000 on it, I’ve been trying to save up for about a year now but i can’t even save up to not get behind on my rent, i got an eviction notice the other day (which will be fine tho i’m paying my rent tomorrow when i get paid), so it’s not like that’s an investment i can ever feasibly afford. like.... i guess poor people just don’t get to be as successful bc of the exorbitant costs associated with proper professional editing (which i’m not saying SHOULDN’T be what they are, because they’re absolutely fair i just physically cannot afford them) so sucks to be me i guess
#win rambles#i'm reading this book about self publishing which is very helpful but i hate the way it talks about how editing is just a necessary#investment like buddy i can't afford to eat you think i can afford to get my book edited#and if i do manage to save up money that money is going towards rent and bills not towards editing#i wish i could i really do but i physically cannot sooooo sorry#guess my book is just gonna be shittier and not as successful#i saw a twitter thread about this recently too and it didn't have a solution either#poor people can just get fucked ig#'if you have a book done you should self publish it!' but only if you have an extra thousand dollars lying around apparently#i'm gonna self publish anyway but it sucks that my book isn't as good as it could be bc i can't afford to get it actually edited

In terms of style and tone WB is more aligned with "commercially successful" or “mainstream” dark fantasy (whatever the heck that means anyway), but in reality you could probably call it "the author's thinly veiled fetish (for whump shit)" and on god i realized i need an outlet for being blatantly about that torture porn/whump shit after several years of hanging out with writers gunning for traditional publishing, agonizing over querying agents and comp titles and big 5 publishing houses and tying themselves into knots about "marketability" and all of that. i say this with the utmost love, but good lord. how exhausting. either way, I’ve got massive writers block and I’m really hoping that indulging in the core of the project - the backstory behind the scenes stuff I daydream about but never write down (until now!!!) - will help me get my ass drafting again
#m blogging#wb#to be clear here I’m not saying that whump stuff is NOT commercially successful or whatever#and somehow by association with all these trad pub hopefuls I’ve built those limits as walls in my own mind#so I need. to tear them down. by being as filthy and self indulgent as possible#anyway I could definitely do a more detailed analysis / breakdown of what I see in whump fics vs commercially published stuff but like#a different day

10 Flaws to Give Your Perfect Characters to Make Them Human
If you're tired of the usual vices like arrogance or impatience, here are some unique (or at least less basic) character flaws to give your perfect characters:
Pathological Altruism
A character so obsessed with helping others that they end up doing more harm than good. Their inability to let others grow or face consequences creates tension.
2. Moral Narcissism
A character who sees themselves as morally superior to others, constantly justifying selfish or harmful actions because they believe they have the moral high ground.
3. Chronic Self-Sabotage
A character who intentionally undermines their own success, perhaps due to deep-seated feelings of unworthiness, pushing them into frustrating, cyclical failures.
4. Emotional Numbness
Rather than feeling too much, this character feels too little. Their lack of emotional response to critical moments creates isolation and makes it difficult for them to connect with others.
5. Fixation on Legacy
This character is obsessed with how they’ll be remembered after death, often sacrificing present relationships and happiness for a future that’s uncertain.
6. Fear of Irrelevance
A character-driven by the fear that they no longer matter, constantly seeking validation or pursuing extreme measures to stay important in their social or professional circles.
7. Addiction to Novelty
Someone who needs constant newness in their life, whether it’s experiences, relationships, or goals. They may abandon projects, people, or causes once the excitement fades, leaving destruction in their wake.
8. Compulsive Truth-Telling
A character who refuses to lie, even in situations where a lie or omission would be the kinder or more pragmatic choice. This flaw causes unnecessary conflict and social alienation.
9. Over-Identification with Others' Pain
Instead of empathy, this character feels others' pain too intensely, to the point that they can’t function properly in their own life. They’re paralyzed by the suffering of others and fail to act effectively.
10. Reluctant Power
A character who fears their own strength, talent, or influence and is constantly trying to shrink themselves to avoid the responsibility or consequences of wielding it.
