#self‑insert: abyssal curiosity (lamia)

Here are some character cards I created for my Genshin Impact self-inserts, Alectra and Lamia! I had already made these before, but I wanted to change both of the poses, as well as needing to update Lamia’s now that I have redesigned her and changed her element!

As you can see from the backgrounds, both of my self-inserts use the Pyro element, and Lamia is currently living in - though is not from - Inazuma while Alectra is part of the Fatui (I used this fanmade background); her elemental powers come from a Delusion rather than a Vision, so that's why I inverted the colour scheme, because I thought it would look cool.

I use Alectra to selfship with La Signora and Eula, whereas I use Lamia to selfship with Yoimiya. If you'd like to know more about either of my self-inserts, I have some info documents styled after the official wiki here for Alectra and here for Lamia (though hers is admittedly way more in-progress)!~

Here is my piece for today, which is the eighth day of the month! Last year had a prompt week, where the prompt for this date was "relaxation". My original idea was to have Yoimiya and Lamia relaxing in a hot spring, but I couldn't quite find the right background, so instead we're relaxing by going to Uyuu Restaurant instead; I didn't actually selfship with Yoimiya yet this time last year, so I thought it'd be nice to portray my selfship with her for some of this year's pieces! Even if MMD froze multiple times, I managed to get this to turn out nicely in the end ^-^

Here is my piece for today, which is the fifteenth day of the month! That means I'm halfway there, which I'm proud of! This is just a silly little scene of Yoimiya and my self-insert Lamia going to the beach and promptly getting caught in the rain. I worked on this one in basically one go, but forgot to put my glasses on because of that, and.. am definitely feeling the effects of the screen glare, oops.

I finally completed the reference model for my second Genshin Impact self-insert! I had originally intended to use her for selfshipping with Eula, but she's now the one I'm using to selfship with Yoimiya instead. She's an Anemo sword user from outside Inazuma who has since decided to stay there for the time being, and loves learning more about the world and the people who inhabit it. Where's her Vision? Excellent question.

If you would like to know more about Lamia, I have a document designed to resemble a wiki page for her, which you can access by clicking on the caption! It’s currently very sparse, but more info will be added with time ^-^

10. who was your first self-insert? - Hmm.. After thinking about it for a bit, I think the answer might be Amber, who I currently use as one of my Skyrim self-inserts but who was originally created as my character in a Minecraft RP (because her character concept in both games is identical: got attacked by a dragon, has the same kind of powers as that dragon, but fights against it for the sake of the ordinary people instead of giving in to her nature and siding with it).

However, it’s tricky to establish the divide between “this is who I’m playing as in the game” and “this is a specific self-insert who exists beyond just being a playstyle on a save file”; this divide is why self-inserts like Emily don’t count. Skyrim was definitely one of the first instances of me using a specific name that isn’t my own for my character, but Camille also originated from the same server Amber did (and I know I made her after I played Amber), and Carmine was not specifically established until later on even though I did play as a Khajiit quite a bit.

11. choose a song to apply to your self-insert! - Haha, I can try. So far, I’ve only been able to do this for a few self-inserts, and with most songs it’s less “songs that apply/fit if you imagine her singing it” and more “songs with the same vibes” (for example, Shinkai City Underground by TanakaB and Babylon by Tohma are both Lamia songs for the latter reason). However, for a song that applies.. MONSTER by Kira is Aria’s arguable main character song. I have a whole PV for it featuring her in my head, depicting her taking revenge on a particular unsavoury individual from her/my past.

14. choose a self-insert and put her, unaltered, into a different source. how does that world receive her? - Again, my instinct is to use Aria for this one because this is literally what she does within the context of Kingdom Hearts’ canon; she and Aqua travel to worlds threatened by invading Heartless or darkness from a villain, with Aqua working more traditionally alongside the important heroes of that world to help them defeat the Heartless while Aria goes to the villain causing the problem, claims to be able to help them with their goals, but instead passes on information to Aqua and the other protagonists, while also siphoning the villain’s darkness away to weaken them and then using it to defeat them to save that world.

In these instances, she is received as an apparent antagonist, using her inhuman features like her wings to show the villains her powerful darkness and convince them to let her “assist” (read: weaken and leak info about) them, only to have never been on their side at all and get to have the satisfaction of taking them down alongside the other heroes. Alternatively, sometimes Aria and Aqua travel other worlds together in order to scout for new potential Keyblade wielders, and in those cases Aqua’s magic can make them both appear to fit into the world more easily, but only if necessary; for example, if they were to go to Alrest, Aria would claim to be Aqua’s Blade to explain her unusual appearance and powers (as she’d still want her wings to be visible, in order to fly).

..Somehow Lamia looks more scary than Alectra when she's in Alectra's wish pose. Part of it is probably that her eyes are glowing, but somehow her expression seems different despite the fact it should be identical, which I can only guess is because Alectra's hair covers more of her face.

Advantages of making Lamia Pyro now: matches the charm I bought on Friday, means I can rework her kit to make her the perfect Yoimiya support because I love her and she deserves it

..This was an absolute nightmare to narrow down to five songs, if I'm being completely honest, because I am almost entirely incapable of picking favourites when it comes to anything, let alone something as varied as songs. So, the way I picked was by reading more into "songs you like to listen to" and then picked five songs I know I have looped over and over again for a long sustained period of time. This might skew the overall vibes, but hopefully it's fine - it's just asking for "songs I like to listen to", not "songs that represent my music taste". (Also most of them are not in English, as a heads-up, though lyric translations are usually present on VOCALOID Lyrics Wiki.)

Last Resort, by Ayase. I like a number of Ayase's songs actually - Happy Ender, Cynical Night Plan, Yokubari, etc. - but this is my absolute favourite out of all those (well, maybe tied with Happy Ender). I kind of have a mini-PV running in my head for what's going on in the song when I'm listening to it, and it's generally just a good song to have going on as background music.

Shinkai City Underground, by TanakaB. Its lyrics are nonsensical in every translation of them I know, but the song itself sounds super catchy, and I also link it to one of my self-inserts (Lamia, specifically), so it ticks a lot of boxes! I like a lot of covers of it, moreso than the original Rin version actually (though that's probably because this song is from 2011..), so let's also pick this Meiko V3 one, if you wanted to have a listen to that.

MONSTER, by KIRA. I was torn between picking this or B.B.F, as both are extremely great and iconic songs (as are a number of KIRA's songs, honestly), but the next song on the list kind of fills a similar sort of niche to my ear as B.B.F, so I went with MONSTER. Another one that functions as a self-insert song, actually - this time for my Kingdom Hearts self-insert, Aria. This is the only one that's actually in English, oops.

SNOBBISM, by Neru and z'5. It's just fun. I associate it a lot with Splatoon, without any real reason (I'd say ROKI sounds more like it fits or is from that game, to be honest) other than assigning it to a team of OCs that I made back in Year 10. Oh, and I used Bizu (the demon character featured in the PV) as my icon during the final Splatfest, since I was part of Team Chaos and I felt he represented that aptly.

ROKI, by mikitoP. Again, it's just fun. And I think it's a neat touch that, in the original version of the song, the producer who wrote it is actually singing alongside Rin! ..That said, I do also like the version used at Magical Mirai, which has Len sing those parts instead (just as a warning, the video here is a concert recording, so it might have some strobe effects).

There are many other songs I could have put here (this doesn't even cover some of what I would say are my most listened-to producers, like Ferry or Hachi), but hopefully these are alright? It's kind of late for me, so I hope that all of this makes sense ;w;

Wait, drat, I never said anything about this here

I have a new self-insert for Genshin Impact in addition to my already-existing one (Alectra)! Her name is Lamia, and she presents herself as a wanderer who has taken up residence in Mondstadt because she appreciates the fact that its archon is not overly present; she wields a sword and makes use of her powers over Anemo in combat, although her voicelines give the impression that her Vision isn’t real. Despite her eccentricities, she always means well, and enjoys feeling included around people.

Although I don’t yet have a tag for her, which is most of why I have not really mentioned her here up until this point, I am pretty happy with Lamia’s character concepts and playing around with what I can do with them. I’m going to use her as my self-insert to selfship with Eula from now on instead of using Alectra, since.. Alectra’s character concepts have shifted to be very intertwined with Signora’s, so this is what feels right. I will update the tags and carrds once I think of new names and tags.

For a very rough sort of draft of what she might look like, I used this picrew to come up with an initial visual!

..I’m aware I haven’t maybe been around as much here lately, and I apologise for that, but I’m hoping to be able to have more to post with time. And maybe finally get around to tackling asks that have been in the inbox since last year.

Give me a 🌙 in my inbox and I’ll give you a random headcanon about my selfship, F/O, or self-insert. - Since I have two self-inserts for this game, but my previously-answered ask was about Alectra, let's make one of these be about her and let the other two be about Lamia, if that's alright!

The sword Alectra is holding in her renders, and canonically would wield when you fight her in Signora's boss fight, is from an event that ran when the game was still quite new! It's called Festering Desire, and I wanted it to be Alectra's canon sword because a) it looks awesome and b) its passive effect is called Undying Admiration, which.. sums up her feelings towards Signora very well. I don't have it myself in-game since I started playing a long time after that event finished, but I really wish I did ;w; In my version of things, the Traveller doesn't take the sword with them after purifying it - instead, there's a cutscene at the end of the event where Alectra shows up, apologises for the trouble her group of Fatui agents had caused, catches up with Sucrose a bit since the two of them were childhood friends, and then takes the sword herself, so that it's out of the alchemists' hands.

The more unusual parts of Lamia's appearance, such as the dark red patches in her hair and the grey scales running down her spine, are a result of her not quite being able to cast her disguise spell as effectively as Enjou did, leaving her looking not entirely as human as perhaps she could have been. She's only a mage compared to Enjou being a lector, after all, so she's a smaller and weaker entity, and she had to learn the magic off of him after pestering asking him to teach it to her while they were exploring Enkanomiya together. But she still thinks she did a pretty good job! Incidentally, the reason she has the line of scales running down her spine (and she forms them instead of scars if she gets hurt) is because of her namesake, the lamia of ancient Greek mythology, which in at least one modern portrayal I've read could perfectly take the form of a human woman except for a line of serpent scales down her spine.

Speaking of Enjou himself, Lamia got on pretty well with him while they were working on their assignment together, and she likes his more easygoing and casual personality a lot! This is why she wanted to learn more about magic from him, including convincing him to teach her how to disguise as a human so that she could pretend to be his assistant while the two of them were around the Traveller. She feels a bit bad for essentially ditching him in Enkanomiya when she decided to leave the Abyss Order behind and see more of Teyvat, but she is fairly confident that he won't hold a grudge against her, at least. She just doesn't want him getting into trouble or anything, since he's her friend.

Awww, I’m really glad to hear that you were able to see your cats again, I’m sure they really enjoyed seeing you! And I must say that your new hyperfixation has really made me (and I’m sure many others) smile to see - I wasn’t really able to get into many Crash games myself unfortunately, but I do still own the party game on my DS! I think it’s called Crash Boom Bang? I’ve had that game for a very long time, and so seeing you and others on my dashboard start to talk about the series does bring a nice bit of nostalgia to me for that reason!

Also, thank you very much for your kind words about what I was able to get at the convention - I’m not sure I actually said what I got on this blog, but I managed to find and buy a Eula sticker, an Aqua badge (from the only person at the con whose art I actually recognised from the internet, which was a very odd feeling haha), I won an Umbreon print from a lucky dip that reminds me a lot of Luna, and I also got a Kirby badge! This was in addition to a Pyro Abyss Mage charm, which matches my self-insert, Lamia. I still need to figure out how to store and display my acquisitions, but I’m really happy to finally have some physical things, and I’m hoping it’s the start of many more items here and there ^-^

I'm taking reworking Lamia's hypothetical kit very seriously, as you can see =P

A dear friend of mine said, to quote, “ain’t never seen two siblings who didn’t share aspects of their fighting style”

So I went down through mine, and.. she’s right:

Both Alectra and Lamia wield swords, like Tartaglia’s melee stance, with Lamia having actually witnessed him learning his sword skills from Skirk in the Abyss

Catarina shows Felix the value of learning magic in addition to swordsmanship in their shared supports (like this one comic I saw that was like “felix if your sword got knocked out of your hand and you could conjure up a new one wouldn’t that be epic”), and ends up taking pointers from how he fights with his own sword too

Inigo is highly skilled in archery, one-handed weaponry, and sneaking - which are the exact same three skills Carmine specialises in (plus alchemy, in her case)

Aria and Vanitas are both dark entities and wield Keyblades of darkness in their fighting styles, with both also focusing way more on offense than defense (I think of Vanitas as more able to take hits whereas Aria is more about dodging them)

Katya, Dima and Echo all have mutations that can be used to attack in various ways - Katya by producing tissue, Dima wielding something with his telekinesis, Echo manipulating electrical signals inside an opponent’s body

Noel is battled on Grassy Terrain by the player, and Adriana’s Aevian Mismagius can set that; Noel, Anna and Adriana all also have at least one Fairy-type Pokémon on their teams (Clefable and later Xerneas, Sylveon and shiny Gardevoir, Mimikyu); Lumi and Adriana both battle more to have a good time than to necessarily get stronger (and Lumi also has an Alolan Ninetales, which is Fairy-type!)

The Lumas don’t generally really fight, and Mimi doesn’t like fighting either, though she can using star magic if she needs to (and Lumas become stars, so)

Maria has two guns. I don’t have a self-insert for her source yet but I don’t know how she learns how to use those so maybe I can teach her? Either that or we can match in dual-wielding but I have some other sort of weapon, I'm not sure yet.

spending three days (that are three months) being trained by and trained by, then training with, Skirk - and having the Abyss seep deep in and steal him all the while

and having this be witnessed, this total metamorphosis, this way that the endless void alters the things it takes a liking to and wants for itself so dramatically

and that is what first stirs her curiosity about humans and what their lives are like - the curiosity that then eventually leads her to turn her serpent-spined back on the Abyss
