Fun fact! This is accurate info! Instead of just your arms doing the movement, which would lead to a weaker punch, if you use your full body it make the punch stronger! It also doesnt just start in the hips (hips are a good starting place though!), using the foot on the same side as the punching hand, twist it, hips moves with, continues movement into the shoulder, and out into the arm as it punches. Stay safe!
Self-defence tip by Eliot Spencer: Put your hip into the punch!

This is so good, been looking for something like this for so long. Read it even if you aren't trans so you can help the trans women, transfeminine and AMAB non-binary people in your life find practical strategies that help them feel safe in their every day life!
I just linked to this in a post, but I want to highlight it more explicitly. This guide is really illuminating, and if you are not a trans femme you should still read it too, because we all need to know what transmisogyny affected people are constantly going thru and how much danger we can present to them and how we fail them as bystanders

Motivation is important to get you started but can be fleeing. However, once mastered, discipline is something that shall stay with you forever. Aqualtune was an African princess, military leader, and freedom fighter who played a crucial role in the foundation of Quilombo dos Palmares, the largest and most significant maroon community of escaped enslaved Africans in colonial Brazil. She is believed to have been the mother of Zumbi dos Palmares, one of the most legendary figures in the fight against Portuguese slavery. Aqualtune represents Black resistance, leadership, and the enduring strength of African women in the diaspora.
Originally a princess and military commander from the Kingdom of Kongo (in present-day Angola and the DemocrAqualtuneatic Republic of Congo), Aqualtune is said to have led a battalion of 10,000 warriors in battle against the Portuguese. After being captured in war, she was enslaved and transported to Brazil, where she was sold at a slave market in Recife. She endured brutal treatment and was forced into sexual slavery, yet she refused to submit to oppression.
Determined to reclaim her freedom, Aqualtune escaped from enslavement and joined the Quilombo dos Palmares, a self-sufficient African community in the jungles of northeastern Brazil that resisted Portuguese rule for over a century. She quickly became one of its key leaders, organizing strategic defences, training warriors, and reinforcing the quilombo’s resistance against repeated colonial attacks.
It is widely believed that she was the mother or grandmother of Zumbi dos Palmares, the most famous leader of the quilombo, indicating that her legacy of resistance was passed down to future generations. Under her leadership, Palmares expanded, providing a refuge for thousands of escaped enslaved Africans and Indigenous allies, proving that Black people could build and sustain independent societies despite colonial oppression.
Though the exact details of her death remain unclear, Aqualtune’s name is immortalized as one of the greatest African warrior-queens in Brazilian history. She remains a powerful symbol of Black female strength, leadership, and anti-colonial resistance, inspiring Afro-Brazilian movements for cultural pride, social justice, and historical recognition.
Her story highlights the indispensable role of African women in liberation movements, proving that resistance against slavery and colonialism was not just led by men, but by fearless women warriors like Aqualtune, who fought for the survival, dignity, and freedom of their people.

The way murther would have a completely different dynamic if they were genderbent, like omg.
Twas reading some Merlin fics and came across Murther as you often do in the merlin ao3 fandom and it occurred to me that while I'm kinda meh for canon typical Murther (I like Lance or Gwaine with him more and also Arthur having to be like "So this is my wife, the queen. And this is my soulmate, the court sorcerer... It's complicated, don't ask.") Genderbent Murther would be genuinely feral.
Here me out, Arthur doesn't want to be a knight as a goal, he wanted to be a good prince and being a knight was part of that. So it goes to imply that female Arthur wouldn't be some burly knight or do a Morgana type 'imma learn to fight anyway bitch' thing, fem!Arthur would do her best to be the best princess she could be.
Where Arthur is a fantastic fighter, f!Arthur would be impeccable at playing the political field and reading people. F!Arthur would be the perfect princess and would fucking know it, she would still be arrogant but instead of bullying the stablehands with knife throwing it would be a backhanded compliment about someone's outdated clothing styles. Princess Arthur would be a completely different character.
Merlin however is from the boonies, peasant women can't afford not to work so female Merlin would have been raised very similar to the boys and likely the only change in character she would have would be a much higher likelihood of knowing genuine self defence.
No one is sending a young unmarried woman off to the capital on her own, she would have been taught at least enough to stab a man where it hurts, if not kill him outright.
Imagine the dynamic with this flip in the personalities though!!!
Perfect princess Arthur being saved by this random peasant girl weilding a knife and the fucking audacity. Just the dynamic of the definitely not scheeming princess and her definitely not a terrifying assasin maidservant.
I honestly think they'd get together in like five minutes flat. Arthur not wanting to have her agency taken by a man meets hella cute and also sexily violent Merlin? She'd climb that peasant girl after the first thwarted assassination attempt.
Especially given that lesbians weren't really seen as a thing back then or if they were, were considered 'training' for their 'real' relationships, so people legit would either not notice or just wouldn't give a shit.
Arthur wouldn't be able to be blatant so she would 100% train her maidservant into the perfect spymaster/assasin and unleash her on her political enemies. Merlin thought the princess was a prat for all of five minutes until said prat gave her bedroom eyes and then 'thanked' her for saving her life... Merlin now has a hot gf, a weird dragon friend, and is getting advanced stabbing lessons... she is a fulfilled bitch.
(Arthur takes the throne because she actively ousts Uther. He tried to marry her off and she already had a shakey relationship with him cus he doesn't know how to raise girls. He is now 'taking a medical vacation' and Arthur rules as queen. Magic is legalised cus merlin legit could not last a full week without this observant version of Arthur noticing the magic.)

Catwoman 1989 (Her Sister's Keeper):
This is a direct sequel to Batman: Year One, and I definitely had to dig BYO back out and line the stories up, and in doing so I noticed how much work Mindy Newell did to transform the needlessly dark, grim and gritty reboot of Selina's origin into a story where you could see Selina in it.
I actually do think Batman: Year One is a story worth reading, and it very much fits into the dark realism turn that was gripping DC in the mid to late 80s. I also think that Frank Miller doesn't care about the interior lives of women (or as them as anything more than set dressing, given how much of his oeuvre consists of every woman appearing being framed by her sexual relationship to the men in the story, down to 'and the women here are all prostitutes').
Mindy Newell does.
Selina's bondage-gear costume and mask from BYO makes sense - as it's a costume her pimp gave her to wear for a particular client. Selina's haircut makes sense - she's started training in self defence with Ted Grant after having been beaten up by a client and left for dead outside of Maggie's convent. Newell literally spends half of the first issue reusing every panel that shows Selina or Holly from Batman #404 and #405, and providing context and additional motivation for what's happening and how that affects Selina. She breaks down the hardened, self-assured Selina that Miller wrote and shows the uncertainty, self doubt and determination under it.
It's just fascinating reinterpretation work to find a character underneath a story that doesn't centre them, and as someone who's done similar work as a fanfic writer it does indeed strike me that Newell does this in a confident way that makes it clear both Newell and Brozowski were sitting there with the issues open in front of them...and Brozowski was redrawing, not tracing. Transformational storytelling!
It also hits a lot of points about how and why Selina becomes Catwoman. Why's she stealing jewels? Because it's a lot more lucrative to her than sex work (and she enjoys it more). She's caught up in her quest for revenge more than saving Maggie - until her decisions lead to Maggie almost dying. She gives Selina and Bruce a proper conversation together about their different moral codes and motivations. Selina's desire to check on the people of the East End starts here, even if its initial form is mostly selfish and does not extend much past the people she cares about.

What I also did not expect going in was how much I was going to like Magdalene. Maggie’s tougher and has got more grit to her than I expected. She stands up to the cops with assurance, she seeks help on her own terms, she refuses to be a victim while she's kidnapped, and she faces off with Batman to protect her sister.

(Batman and Maggie talking in Catwoman #4)
The art is also excellently atmospheric the whole way through, hampered as it is by the fact that Batman Year One had already given Selina two of my least favourite outfits ever to use for this overlapping story.
I really liked this. From what I hear, Newell's Lois Lane mini is equally interesting in terms of centring a woman's story in a dark and gritty setting. Her background in healthcare as a nurse pops out in terms of what the story focused on. I really wish Newell had been given more writing opportunities, later on, because what she put together here is just really intelligent and entertaining.

Does Size Really Matter in Self Defence?
In self-defence, size often feels like a deciding factor—but that’s not the full picture. While larger individuals may hold physical advantages, strategy, awareness, and training can easily level the playing field. Real-life scenarios are often about quick thinking and using your environment to your benefit, not brute force. The Myth of Size in Self Defence When discussing self-defence, most…
