Thinking about perry initially having very strong opinions about evil and justice and initially signing the villains' names with "evil."

Thinking about how he started signing doof the same way and with the letter D instead of his first name which is H.

Thinking about perry, after seeing that heinz has made efforts in understanding his expressions and gestures enough, starts writing as a way to communicate with him sometimes and heinz mentioning right after that he started actually looking up ASL after like their 5th meeting realizing maybe perry uses it and perry getting mildly less eager to destroy the inators before heinz finishes his monologues and backstories.

Thinking about perry eventually changing the sign he uses for heinz, evil, into "talkative" instead and using H instead from how many times doof repeated Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz in the monologues that it's stuck in his head now and after hearing more about the other doofenshmirtz in both heinz' stories and people perry eventually meets (vanessa and roger).

Thinking about the initial intention of the chatty meaning behind how heinz' name is signed is just an observation and a bit of irritation to it turning into something affectionate and the highlight of his day (still grates him sometimes).

Thinking about how perry, without noticing it, has started to not automatically sign every new villain he meets with "evil" (unless he's sure they deserve it) thanks to heinz.

Things you can’t do when you’re mute (partially for the pnf community partially cause i was just thinkin about it):

- Phone calls (yes they have TTS apps that can do this but a) they cost money to remove ads that physically interrupt you and b) people are stupid sometimes and constantly ask if you’re still there even when you introduce with the fact that you’re mute and to give you time to type)

- Fast food drive throughs

- Communicating while carrying things

- Communicating while driving (unless you are with someone who can understand sign/one handed sign)

- Asking people if they need help quickly without stopping them and having them wait for you to type

BONUS, doable things that are just kind of annoying:

- Paying for gas with cash

- Buying things at a register instead of self checkout

- Really just paying for anything in cash

- People acting like I am deaf when I am actively listening to music with large over the ear headphones loudly and having to point to my ears and do a thumbs up (this usually get the point across)

BONUS TWO, things that are cool that have happened to me:

- A hispanic guy (this is relevant) came up to me at a gas station who had seen me paying for gas inside and I guess heard me blasting my music and started speaking to me in spanish. I understand enough spanish that i was able to get that he was asking if i was mute, then he asked if i understood spanish and i shook my head, and he switched to english and started telling me about a seminar he went to on mutism. He was very sweet and it made my day

- The woman who is always working at the panda express I frequent at my school learned how to say a few things in sign presumably because I go there a LOT

- A little girl at the summer camp I went to who connected with me heard another kid ask me why I was using my phone to speak and said loudly “Some people can’t hear and some people can’t speak its a disability”

- Another little girl at the same camp kept running out into the hallway and the teacher was older and worried more about keeping an eye on everyone than her comfort so I offered to watch her in the hall. I sat down with her and asked her if she was overstimulated (in a way a small child would understand) and she nodded. I don’t remember what I said next but she signed me too. I signed asking if she signed and she signed back “a little”. I explained why I couldn’t speak and she said she was the same. I nearly burst into tears for this child and the connection we had. I spent the rest of the day with her. She spoke quietly to other kids but with me she would just smile big and point to things she wanted to show me. We read some of her favorite books quietly sitting next to each other.

- Teaching kids the ASL alphabet, they are always so eager to learn

I think the reason "Human Perry is mute and communicates with sign language" in human!Perry aus doesn't work for me is that it defeats the purpose. Like the reason he's made mute seems to stem from him being unable to speak as a platypus, something that frequently comes up, and it seems a natural conclusion to have him communicate with sign language as an alternative.

But Perry the Platypus, as a platypus, isn't mute. He vocalizes constantly, and is understood by other animals when he does (in fact it's arguably canon that animals in the Phineas and Ferb universe all share a common, structured, and translatable language across the board). What's more, Perry has hands. If he felt like communicating with humans as Agent P, he could canonically use sign language. All of the animal agents could.

And like, just so we're clear, I don't think anyone writing Perry as mute to reflect the lack of spoken conversation in their own au is doing something wrong. I don't even necessarily think the use of sign language as an alternative is wrong either, I just think that it doesn't really do what it's meant to do: if you're making Perry mute to reflect his lack of speech in canon and then giving him sign language that everyone understands, that undoes the intent.

One could argue that it would still work if you made it so that only a few people actually understood sign language, like Monogram and Carl and the other animal agents, but that kind of makes his family seem like jerks for not learning sign language, any sign language at all, in five years (or longer, depending on the backstory). Doofenshmirtz gets away with it, but canonically he's the one who understands Perry the best (we're ignoring what he said in Minor Monogram because that doesn't actually line up with the other four seasons worth of episodes that suggest otherwise) so it would make sense to have him be the only one who did bother to learn asl at least make sense.

In any case, this line of thought is why in Perry T, when Perry isn't talking he uses non-linguistic communication, but has no trouble communicating with the people he has deemed worth using his voice around.

(By the way, this is a matter of just semantics and I certainly don't have any trouble with anyone who sees Perry's relationship with speech in Perry T as selective mutism, but I don't consider it that way myself because it is completely voluntary for him, and while his reasons are a little deeper than I can explain just yet, are largely to do with the ease of revealing too much the more you say, not just as a secret agent but in general. This is why his argument with Heinz in Zenith is so significant, because events upset him enough that he stopped worrying about that, just for a few minutes.)

-aboriginal australian. specifically wiradjuri.

-starting off w how he's connected to the flynn-fletchers: he is ferb's bio mom's lil brother.

- cover story is...whatever is plot convenient. but im fond of insurance agent bc of doof 101

-half white australian ig but he has little contact w that side of his family bc his mom cut contact before he was born. (they SUCK!!!)

-orphan. parents died when perry was 3 in a car crash & was found w a family of platypuses by his sister

-34 (born in 1973 bc the show takes place in the summer of 07 to me)

-trans man (realized he was trans when he was 11-13) (just like me fr)

ok now time for his backstory:

-perrys sister is 11 years older than him and died soon after ferb was born (who i will call E bc i can't come up w a name for her and mammalofaction's human perry au did smth to my brain)

-her death is mystery...to me. i have no idea how she died.

-they enter an OWCA orphanage nd they (well...just E at first. bc perrys a toddler lol) rly show promise. shes officially scouted when shes 15. (perry is scouted when hes 10)

-(dont. ask abt the remaining family lets just say theyre too far away or broke to take in kids. its a plot device)

-owca not a fun place to grow up. really rough in general esp once youve been scouted to work as an agent. does not help that there are adults there that enjoy the power they wield.

-when E is 18 she enters uni. owca helps her out. when shes 19 shes sent to the owca's uk division. does law foundation then gets a law degree.

-when shes 25 shes finally able to get guardianship of perry.

-perry. really struggles here. hes traumatized by his time alone in owca. he was already selectively mute but yeah being traumatized doesnt Help. at this point he's still in owca schooling just now allowed to live w E bc she's an agent & hes skipping classes flunking etc. it takes a while for him to rly put effort back into living.

-on a more positive note perry wasnt completely alone in australian owca. he was friends w future agent kangaroo. he had a brief crush on him around the time perry realizes he's trans so theres a real (do i want to be him or do i want him)

-her & lawrence begin dating when shes 28 and they marry when shes 32. theyd been friends since she was 24 tho

-they have ferb 3 years later. she dies soon after.

-perry moves in lawrence and helps take care of ferb. lawrence somehow someway makes his way to america meets linda falls in love etc. i think perry & ferb go back in forth btwn the us & the uk.

-eventually obv lawrence & linda move in & marry. perry stays in the uk.

-he gets relocated to the us at some point & law+lin are like hey you should stay with us.

-in 2001 before 9/11 (this is for me ok let me get a few jokes in im aware they only had him for 5 yrs but he is 6 as a platypus) perry moves to the us. lives by himself in america for a year before moving in w the flynn-fletchers. (ferb obv knows perry but so do phin & candace. just to a lesser extent.)

-beyond that is very flexible. perry cld have only known doof since the beginning of the summer or since the moment he arrived in america. doesnt rly matter lol but if i did have to give a time id say theyd been nemeses for 3 years.

Canon Rewrite Kick

I'm working on Phineas and Ferb rn

Human!Perry but blatant age difference. He's not underage; he's 19 & Lawrence's baby brother. He's occasionally nicknamed Platypus: at work, it's a spy/mole codename; otherwise, it's a genuine nickname due to the chirring noise he makes

Candace and Phineas are Heinz's kids, but Candace doesn't remember him, and Linda didn't tell him about Phineas

Heinz isn't evil; he's just a semi-successful businessman. DEI is Doofenshmirtz Engineering Incorporated, and OWCA is his main competition

Perry's a selective mute and usually signs; Heinz isn't socially blind and can identify Perry without his hat

Some episodes stretch and coincide with other episodes

ok but can we talk about ferb and perrys relationship? you've got a little boy who's selectively mute and his pet who is, obviously, also mute, due to being an animal that does not talk. both of them are way more complex and intelligent than you'd ever think just from listening to them. i know that pnf wisely avoids ever making a deal out of ferb's being mute; it's not a flaw or something he gets picked on for, but i really do like to imagine ferb taking comfort in the fact that there's nothing wrong with being quiet, because just look at perry being the best pet in the world. in conclusion i want to see this boy hugging this platypus

A lot of people seem to go the full mute route because he doesn’t talk in canon, but while I’m still working out the details, mine is gonna fall in the range of “talks about as much, possibly slightly more than, Ferb” because he /does/ talk in canon, he just talks in the way that a platypus does, ie, that chittery noise he makes that is clearly intended to be communicative.

However, it’s necessary to marry that to the way he comes across, which is the silent sort, so “selectively mute” seems to be a pretty solid middle ground between “how much he talks as a platypus” and “a lot of his communication is necessarily body language and that needs to translate to aus where he’s human”. An au where Perry is completely mute is nice, but it doesn’t feel right, in the same way that an au where he talks freely /also/ doesn’t feel right.

(This is all a really longwinded way of saying that seems to be the route that translates most closely from what we’re given, I think.)

Anyone else headcanon their human Perry to be selectively mute?

Hello, I have thought of a few more things to add to this list.

6) Knowing ASL as a spy could be useful in cases where blending in or seeming inconspicuous is needed. No one suspects people who sign to be a danger because of the ableism ingrained from birth in a lot of societies. Have Perry start signing at someone as a way to act dumb (it’s a great way to get out of unwanted situations, speaking from experience (also not saying signing = dumb, but unfortunately those two are equated in a lot of minds))

7) Having Perry teach kids important signs would be a cute interaction. I work with kids and in my experience they are always eager to learn ASL stuff and use what they do learn with me frequently. Also there have been moments this has helped kids who also struggle with speaking for me so that could be cute.

8) In my experience, using TTS can make connecting emotionally a lot harder than using sign. If you’re having an emotional scene and have been utilizing TTS, maybe place someone there to translate ASL like Doof or one of the kids to make more of an impact. Might not be a big difference to those who aren’t mute or deaf, but personally I would love to see it.

9) I can’t scream, my laugh is quiet most of the time, I oftentimes can’t hum. These are all things that vary person to person but should be considered. If you make Perry able to scream or hum makes sure to keep it that way consistently unless there’s a reason to change it (panic attack, tired of masking, etc)

10) If Perry is traveling the sign language in the place he’s going may change, taking away his primary communication method. A lot of interesting things could be done here.

Dear Human Perry Writers

I am a real life mute person, so take some tips from me about writing Perry as a mute man.

1) Having Perry use sign is great, having Perry sign at people who don’t know sign and just confuse them and then not do anything to help remedy that/laugh at it is not the way to go. It is extremely frustrating wanting to say something and not being able to, obviously there’s lot’s of times things i wanna day have to go unsaid, but some things are too important, especially when you are literally a spy.

2) Not enough of y’all are utilizing the beauty of modern technology. I see so many people have Perry write stuff that’s such a waste of paper. Text To Speech apps are a beautiful thing.

3) When you are mute you get mistaken for deaf A LOT. This is more personal but I would love to see some scenes of Perry getting mistaken for deaf and his reaction to that.

4) If you wanna make a comment on capitalism for any reason a lot of TTS apps have unskippable ads that are quite long. Another personal thing but having Perry deal with ads while trying to communicate would be realistic and relatable.

5) Last thing, and not a requirement but I think it would be cool, Perry is very autistic coded so I think having him be nonverbal autistic instead of having trauma induced mutism would be neat. Or even a mix of the two (me for real)
