Incorrect quotes
Mizu: What doesn't kill me should run, because now I'm fucking pissed.
-
Taigen: I must restore my honour back.
Ringo: Would you like some soup to grow back your hair? I hear that these mushrooms make hair growth more effective :)
-
Mizu: You seem familiar? Have I killed your father? How about your lover? I probably stabbed you at some point.
-
Mizu: Ringo.
Ringo: :3
Mizu: I need you to be serious.
Ringo: >:3
-
Taigen: I fear no man
Taigen: But that
*homoerotic feelings towards Mizu*
Taigen: That scares me
-
Akemi: I actually don't mind when people underestimate me because I am a woman. It makes it much easier to plan the downfall of people when they're focused on me being a proper lady.
Seki: That's my girl :)

seki's death scene in blue eye samurai where he says "my dream ofr japan is one ruled by you" and then says "i raised you to-" and pauses. i expected he would say "i raised you to rule" but he just says "i raised you" because at this moment this is what nattets. he raised her. at this moment, he's dying, and what matters is not if she will live away in a farm or become an empress that would be in the history of japan, what matters is that he raised her at this moment and saw her grow

Dead Mothers of BES pt. 1 (Akemi)
Mizu, Taigen, Akemi, and Ringo are very different characters, but the two things they all have in common are shitty fathers and dead mothers (at least from our Season 1 knowledge). The shitty fathers part is pretty self-explanatory, but let’s dig into what we know about their dead mothers and what we might speculate.
This is a four-part series, starting with Akemi's mom.
Tumblr media
How do we know she’s dead?
In Ep. 4, Lord Daichi states that Akemi’s mother is no longer around. Seki confirms this in Ep. 7 when he says he tried to prepare Akemi for the world after her mother died.
When did she die?
The evidence we have points in two different directions. One possibility is that she died not that long ago, when Akemi was already in her teens. Akemi’s half-brother Tomoe is not that old (pre-verbal), and Lord Daichi likely remarried and had his second child shortly after his first wife died due to the need for a male heir. Indeed, when he talks about Lord Saito being on the market for a new bride, he mentions blithely that Lord Saito’s wife just died in childbirth, suggesting that new brides are sought quickly afterward. In addition, Lord Daichi in Ep. 8 says that Akemi used to look at his with admiration. This is definitely not the nature of their relationship when we first meet them, so it could be that Akemi’s regard for her father changed when he remarried. Young children typically are more accepting of step parents, and Akemi might have been especially upset at her father if his new bride wasn’t that much older than her.
Tumblr media
That said, it seems like Seki has been taking care of her since she was little. He, not her mom, brushed her teeth, taught her to read and paint, and was the one who let her sneak into her father’s library to read books. That said, the fact that he replaced her mom (instead of a nursemaid) implies that Akemi was not young enough to need breastfeeding. Either he started taking care of Akemi when she was around 3 and her mom died around then, or he was taking care of her even when her mom was still alive.
Tumblr media
How did she die?
She could have died from illness, but my guess is that she died from pregnancy-related complications. Akemi was her only child, so there must have been significant pressure for her to bear a male heir. The fact that Akemi doesn’t have a younger full sibling suggests that her mother might have struggled with subsequent pregnancies, perhaps having miscarriages/stillbirths, which were much more dangerous at the time.
Tumblr media
What was she like?
Lord Daichi said that Akemi’s mom was like her in that she talked back. That said, she knew how to please him as a wife. My guess is that she was a strong woman who knew how to influence her often pig-headed husband. The fact that Seki took over from her as Akemi’s “mother” suggests that he was close to Akemi’s mother. Otherwise it’s a strange position for her father’s counselor to be put into. In addition, Seki raised Akemi to be a future leader, which is very progressive for the time, so my guess is that he had high regard for Akemi’s mother and was perhaps her advisor as well (especially if she was the one actually pulling her husband’s strings). This would also inform the direction Seki pushed Akemi into—marrying up and working within her constraints as a wife to become a leader through her husband.

BES thoughts
So the three ‘second in commands’ or ‘right hand men’ in the show (Seki, Shindo, and Ringo) have a couple of similarities that is starting to gnaw at me. Both Shindo and Ringo have a theme regarding the loss of hands or living without them, and in the end both Seki and Shindo die. Ringo and Seki both fulfill the role of being the only emotional caregivers to their masters in the show. I definitely think there’s a theme regarding those on their quest for power and their right hands/apprentices.
This also plays into the theory that. Ringo my beloved. He is not lasting long. Both Seki and Shindo are dead, with Seki’s death having a profound effect on Akemi. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ringo is the next to go.
Just fun to think about. The Apprentice of the Samurai, the Assistant to the Empress, and The Right Hand of the Tyrant.

Seki: Now, are you familiar with the gearshift? Akemi: You mean the prndl? Seki: The what? Akemi: The prndl. Seki: Are you referring to the shift lever that says p-r-n-d-l? Akemi: I'm not a child, Seki. I know how to spell "prndl." Seki: It is not something you spell. It is a gearshift. Seki: The letters stand for Park, reverse, neutral, drive, and low! Akemi: You're making me nervous with all this technical talk. Seki: Oh, I'm sorry. Seki: Why don't we just relax? We'll turn on the radio. Would you like "am" or "fm"?

Currently working on a Blue Eye Samurai set of face cards- but I’ve run into a problem… there are so many characters I want to include but I’m not sure which ones and which suits they should be on. I’m going to have Madame Kaji here to be a queen and I want to include Seki and Swordfather in the deck…
What I’m getting at is what characters you think fit which suit and whether they would be a king, queen, or jack?

Daichi and Seki called Akemi a "Pig" with "little options," but Mizu called her "magical forest creature" who can have "anything she wants."
Taigen and Mikio called Mizu "Monster" but Akemi called her "beautiful" "not scary" and "not a killer."
I know Akemi later told Mizu that "I should've killed you" and Mizu called Akemi a "Fucking brat" but YOU DON'T GET HOMOSEXUAL BANTER, THAT WAS LIKE THIRD BASE FOR THEM

Madame Kaji's role
Madame Kaji is a headstrong, strong-willed, sharp tongued, yet caring woman in Blue Eye Samurai. We see her softer side when she was heartbroken that Kinuyo was taken from her by Boss Hamata. Her disdain for men shows up when she tells Akemi that men are weak, yet still feel the need to be powerful.
Eventually Madame Kaji and her girls are recruited to be Akemi's Lady-in-waitings, her advisors, and her companions in the palace. We see that Madame Kaji is serious about the job when she sees Mizu. Stating that it was improper of a man to be in the womens' quarters, and that she saw how Mizu watched the guards take Akemi away. Madame Kaji only budges when Mizu mentions that Akemi is in danger. So, we see that Madame Kaji does care for Akemi.
Tumblr media
The question now is, what will be Madame Kaji's role in the future? With Seki dead, I believe that Madame Kaji will become Akemi's new mentor. But, she will differ from Seki. Madame Kaji will most likely assist Akemi's goal to becoming great. Chances are, she will encourage Akemi to manipulate her husband even further to give Akemi more power in the palace. After all, Madame Kaji did advise Akemi, "...nurture his weakness and become his strength."
Madame Kaji will push Akemi to become ruthless and manipulative to gain power in court. We've already seen Akemi manipulate Taigen during sex when she convinced him that Mizu did not give him a proper duel. Madame Kaji will Akemi the push she needs to gain control in the palace. If Seki taught Akemi how to bring honour, then Madame Kaji will teach her how to take it. Either by manipulation or by swaying the court to her favour.
I noticed that I thought Madame Kaji and Lady Ito were similar in a way. They were both women in positions of authority. (Lady Ito is currently the Empress and Madame Kaji was the manager in a brothel before becoming Akemi's Lady-in-Waiting.) Both Madame Kaji and Lady Ito have no problem with talking back to Akemi. Also both are intelligent, well-spoken, have groups of people that are loyal to them (Lady Ito's clan, sons, and the nobles in court. Madam Kaji and her girls.) And both are ruthless when it comes to their enemies. Lady Ito made her son lock the door behind them, trapping the nobles, because they saw the Shogun's less honourable side. While Madame Kaji killed Boss Hamata due to his abuse.
Since Lady Ito had made it clear she does not like Akemi, I believe that Madame Kaji will be her foil. Her parallel of some sort. Both women share multiple qualities but one is at the top of society while the other has been near the bottom almost her whole life. From what I have seen of Lady Ito, I believe that she will look down on Madame Kaji and will have a rivalry with her. Same with Madame Kaji, since Lady Ito has constantly taunted Akemi during her stay at the palace.
Madame Kaji will most likely become the key for Akemi to gain the upper hand against the Empress. Perhaps Madame Kaji or one of her girls will overhear of a secret of the Empress. Remember that Lady Ito knew of her husband's secret tradings with the West and kept it on the down low. She probably has some secrets of her own as well. Secrets that could strip her of her power or ruin her reputation.
When the palace burnt down, we learned that Akemi's father is still alive. Akemi offers to take care of him, but she has a devious smile. Akemi will try to punish her father in some way of course, but I believe she will also try to use him. From what we've seen from Akemi, she doesn't use brute force to control people. She prefers emotional manipulation. She's done this to Taigen, the random man she served in the brothel, and her husband to get her way.
Akemi's way of control lines up with Madame Kaji's view on how women get their revenge. Stating that revenge is a luxury for men, but women need to be more practical and focus on the result. They make the perfect duo. An experienced, cunning, and cutthroat advisor paired up with a ruler who is ambitious, conniving, and eager to play Go with the people around her as her Go pieces.
They will most definitely pair up to use Akemi's father for their plans. Whether through blackmail or something more sinister. Perhaps they will use Madame Kaji's girls to eavesdrop on important conversations that hold secrets of the royal family. No matter the method, Madame Kaji will ensure that Akemi will achieve greatness because not only will it benefit Akemi's future, but also her girls' future.
Seki was the mentor that Akemi needed while growing up, but Madame Kaji is the advisor that Akemi needs if she wants to navigate the backstabbing, dishonourable royal court to get to the top.

I’d pay good money to know what Seki thought had gone down between Mizu and Akemi and what the fuck was currently going on between them like. I seriously doubt that Akemi gave Seki a detailed walk through of everything that happened to her, so as far as Seki is concerned this blood splattered samurai just inexplicably shows up, risks his own life to save their lives, has an escape plan for them seemingly out of nowhere and he and Akemi know each other but are emphatically “not friends” and Akemi apparently both trusts him to keep them alive and also hates his guts. Passionately. Like he literally doesn’t know any more than that. The theories that man must’ve been concocting to explain how fuckin weird these two are acting about each other would be insane and it’s a shame tragedy strikes and we don’t get a quiet moment for him to take Akemi aside and go “so who’s the nice young man??” and actually get an answer that isn’t death glare or something
